De La Salle University sent Far Eastern University (FEU) crashing to its second loss off the season after hacking out a 77-66 win on Sunday. This was the Archers’ fifth victory in Season 76 of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines men’s basketball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

La Salle controlled the entire game after posting a 23-14 lead in the first quarter and erected a sizable gap at halftime, 44-33, before FEU tried to narrow the gap in the second half. The Green Archers, however, fought back big in the payoff period seal the win.

“I keep reminding my players to be mentally prepared and mentally tough in the second round,” said La Salle head coach Juno Sauler. “All teams will try to make a run and stop us, so we must know what to do to win.”

Newcomer Jason Perkins led La Salle with 18 points and 13 rebounds, Jeron Teng finished with 16 points and nine rebounds, guard Almond Vosotros piled up 13 points, and Arnold Van Opstal contributed nine points in DLSU’s win.

La Salle improved its win-loss record to 5-4 while FEU now holds a 7-2 slate.

The Green Archers also avenged their 79-83 loss to the Tamaraws in the first round, where they led 13 points in the fourth quarter before losing the game.

Perkins completed a three-point play in the third period to give La Salle a 58-43 lead. FEU then rallied and cut the deficit to only two points in the fourth period. Vosotros, though, came up big and led a 7-0 assault that gave the Archers a 65-43 advantage with less than two minutes left.

FEU’s Roger Pogoy and Mark Belo dropped 16 points each while Terrence Romeo added 12 points – a total far below his scoring average in the first round.

La Salle finished the game shooting 28-of-67 (41.8 percent) from the field while FEU tallied a 24-of-71 (33.8 percent) clip. La Salle also led in rebounds, 59-36.

La Salle, however, was atrocious 14-of-33 (42.4 percent) from the free throw line, while FEU shot 12-of-19 (63.2 percent). (EF/Inboundpass.com)

Started playing basketball the same way many other Pinoys do -- on the street with his relatives, friends, and neighbors. After accepting the fact I will never be Philippine Basketball's savior against the might of China and Korea on the court, I turned to writing off the court. I'm not exactly the most objective armchair analyst on this side of the basketball universe, but it's not for want of trying. I write about other basketball leagues on HoopNut.blogspot.com.
