The San Beda Red Lions clung on to a pivotal third quarter blast that allowed them to withstand a threatening endgame rally by the Adamson Soaring Falcons, good for a third place finish of the eliminations in the FilOil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup at the Arena in San Juan.
After leading by six points at the end of the opening period, 18-12, the tables were turned against the Red Lions when the Falcons caught up with them. Adamson outscored San Beda in the second frame, 24-11, resulting in a 29-36 disadvantage against the Lions, entering intermission.
When the third canto rolled around, Adamson seemed to have deflated as they squandered their lead.
As three-time NCCA Champions, San Beda then showed exactly why they were a dominant force in their mother league by pouncing on the small opening the Falcons gave them.
Baser Amer, who had 12 points to go with nine rebounds and four assists, was the leader of the pack as he provided the spark for his team, scoring six points, including the game-tying freebies with 4:40 left in the third.
“Sabi lang ni coach yung game na ‘to no bearing pero kailangan namin i-improve yung individual attitude namin, pati ma-improve yung chemistry namin as a team,” Amer said during an interview.
He had no shortage of help as well with Ola Adeogun, who figured in 10 points, scoring four points in that stretch of the game to make it a four-point lead, 47-43, at the 3:13 mark.
However, it was Adamson’s Ingrid Sewa who won the tough battle in the paint as he outrebounded Adeogun, 10-5.
Even Rome Dela Rosa made himself heard as he topscored for the Lions with 18 points — 14 of which he poured in the second half — on 7 of 13 field goals, along with three rebounds, one assist and two steals.
Despite coming into the payoff period with a 58-47 deficit, the Falcons refused to be put away easily.
They forced San Beda to an early penalty barely three minutes into the last canto. The Lions led by as much as 14 points, 65-51, with 6:23 remaining off a hook shot by Adeogun. But they blew that lead and and eventually saw the Falcons coming to within four points on a Sewa jam with 47 seconds left to play.
Francis Abarcar (four points) then muffed his charities, leaving the door slightly open for the Falcons. But Adamson wasn’t able to capitalize as they missed grabbing the rock from the rebound and was forced to foul with 22 ticks remaining.
Dela Rosa then sank two points from the stripe to provide some insurance, 71-65.
Refusing to go down without a fight, Jericho Cruz scored his 15th point off an and-one play to come to within three, 68-71, with 15 seconds left.
Amid a 21-17 production in the final frame, Adamson still came up short as Adeogun and Amer combined for four free throws to ice the game and successfully turn back the Falcons.
Arthur Dela Cruz and Anthony Semerad added 13 and seven markers, respectively, for the Lions.
Meanwhile, Roider Cabrera and Harry Petilos both had 10 points apiece for Adamson.
