The College of St. Benilde Blazers outplayed their rivals on two fronts Saturday to advance to the second stage of the  quarterfinals playoffs of the 9th Fr. Martin Cup Collegiate Open basketball tournament.

Mark Romero showed the way with 30 points as the CSB-A Blazers escaped with a 78-77 triumph over the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals in the Group B contest at the Trinity University of Asia gymnasium in Quezon City.

Rafael Romeo Nayve tallied 10 points for the CSB-B Blazers, who trounced the Lyceum Pirates, 73-45, in the Group A action.

The CSB-A Blazers thus earned right to face the unbeaten and top seeded Group B contender, the  Adamson Falcons, for a semifinals slot in this weekend’s playoffs, according to commissioner Robert de la Rosa.

The CSB-B Blazers will clash with the Letran Knights, who took the second seeding in Group A with their 5-1 win-loss slate.

In the first stage of the quarterfinal playoffs, the Informatics Icons stopped the  Mapua Cardinals, 61-57, while the University of the Philippines Maroons turned back the University of Perpetual Help-A Altas, 63-56, the other weekend.

Mark Montuano tallied 25 points for the Icons after they hurdled the Cardinals, and moved into a showdown with the second ranked Arellano University Chiefs for the other  Group B semis berth.

Julius Wong topscored for 16 as he helped the Maroons, who finished fifth in Group A and  arrange a clash with the defending champion San Beda Red Lions  for the semis slot in their bracket.
