The defending champion San Beda Red Lions continued their winning ways in the presence of new mentor Boyet Fernandez in the ongoing 9th Fr. Martin Cup Collegiate Open Basketball tournament.
They celebrated their second straight win with Fernandez sitting and observing quietly from bench with a hard-earned 66-60 stopping of the College of St. Benilde-B Blazers at the Arellano University gymnasium.
Later, the Informatics Icons drew 21 points from Cedric Ablaza as they put away the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals, 85-71.
Baser Amer sizzled with 22 points for the Red Lions, who went on to claimed their third win in four matches in Group A.
Last week, the Red Lions gave Fernandez a great welcome by surviving a late University of the Philippines Maroons comeback with a 63-61 win.
The Blazers were ahead 58-55 when the Red Lions turned the tables on them in the last four minutes.
Just like in their previous game, Fernandez just let assistant coach JB Sison call the shots.
An 11-2 windup led by Kyle Pascual and JP Mendoza gave the Red Lions the upperhand in the ensuing play.
Ryusei Koga capped the windup with a triple and split free throw.
Both the Blazers and the Icons are seeking the best spots in the quarterfinal round. Commissioner Robert de la Rosa said the top four teams in each of the two brackets will gain quarterfinal berths.
