San Sebastian edges Ateneo in thriller

LIGHTNING did not strike twice for Kirk Long.

The fifth-year clutch defensive stalwart buried a second triple from the exact same position that would have won the game for Ateneo de Manila University. Upon review, however, the referees ruled that the ball was still in his hands when the final buzzer sounded, allowing the San Sebastian College-Recoletos Stags to escape with a pulsating 70-69 win in the 2011 Philippine Collegiate Champions League round-robin Final Four phase last December 6 at the Arena in San Juan.

“I guess i just told them to take this opportunity to try our luck against the number one collegiate team in the country right now. I wasn’t expecting them to be a bit less aggressive on us,” said Stags head coach Topex Robinson. “Hopefully we can come up with the same intensity and aggressiveness against Ateneo if by chance we play them again in the Finals.”

Up by five at the start of the fourth quarter, baskets by reserves Bacon Austria and JP Erram sandwiched a transition layup from Long to give the four-time, reigning UAAP champions a 65-53 lead with 6:05 left in the game. In response, San Sebastian unleashed a massive 13-0 blast capped off by a banked-in shot by 2011 NCAA MVP Calvin Abueva that allowed his squad to take a slim, 66-65 lead with 1:58 left to play. On the next Ateneo possession, Austria missed a triple. But, in their haste to execute a transition play, the Stags found themselves turning the ball over, with Greg Slaughter completing the steal. Settling into their halfcourt scheme, the Blue Eagles got the ball to the seven-footer, drawing the fourth foul of Michael Miranda. The UAAP Mythical Five selection managed just a split but tied the game at 66-all.

The stalemate didn’t last long however, as Ian Sangalang hit a tough turnaround shot in the paint with 53 seconds left to put his squad up by two. Ateneo was unable to force another deadlock after Nico Salva’s hook shot went in and out. With less than two full possessions left on the clock, the Stags went to Sangalang again, who missed his shot. Luckily, teammate Jovit dela Cruz skied for the repossession with 23 seconds left. Forced to foul twice as they weren’t in the penalty yet, the Blue Eagles finally sent dela Cruz to the line, where the sophomore confidently nailed both charities.

But, the game wasn’t over yet, as Long dribbled quickly to his three-point line and launched a bomb that connected, making it just a one-point game. Another Blue Eagle foul sent Sangalang to the stripe with 4.6 seconds left, but the NCAA Defensive Player of the Year missed the first and then intentionally missed the second. The latter turned out to be the difference-maker as Ateneo burned precious time retrieving the loose ball before sending it to Long for the split-second late shot.

Asked if he made any special adjustments during their big run, Robinson told reporters after the game that his instruction was just to play every possession. “On defense, we have to make a stop, pagbaba doon, we have to convert. We didn’t force our shots during those last possessions down the stretch so na-value namin yung every possession given to us.”

Tied after the first quarter and at halftime, some hot shooting by Salva helped the Blue Eagles take a 47-38 advantage in the third, only to watch San Sebastian reel them back in as it got to within a deuce, 53-51, on an outlet play to Miranda. The Blue Eagle reserves responded in kind, as the duo of Erram and Austria dropped five straight to hike their lead to 58-53 before their defense surrendered a jumper on the inbounds play with 3.5 seconds remaining in the period.

Abueva led all scorers with 20 markers while also grabbing a game-best 11 boards. Sangalang added 18 and six, while graduating team captain Anthony del Rio played all but five minutes, orchestrating the offense to the tune of seven assists. The triumph was made even bigger by the fact that the Stags lost their best outside shooter, Ronald Pascual, to an ACL injury on his left knee in their previous game against the San Beda Red Lions. Though Robinson said that the team was still waiting for a second opinion, the first diagnosis indicated a complete ACL tear, Pascual’s second, after suffering one on the opposite knee when he was with Adamson University in the junior ranks.

Greg Slaughter’s 16 points and seven rebounds paced Ateneo, but the team seemed to forget about him as the game went on as he went from scoring eight points in the opening canto to just eight more, including a single point in the fourth quarter, from that point on. Salva added 13, nine in the third quarter and none also in the fourth, while Kiefer Ravena managed 12 markers on eight attempts from the field.

The Stags were able to quell the Blue Eagles’ formidable running game, holding them to just four transition points. They also managed to overcome their biggest enemy of the NCAA tournament, turnovers, committing just 10 mistakes in 40 minutes of play after averaging 21 in their mother league.

With their victory over San Beda and Ateneo and the defeat of the University of Cebu Webmasters at the hands of the Red Lions in the later game, the Stags are assured of a twice-to-beat advantage in the PCCL Finals, regardless of the result of their game on Thursday, December 8 against UC. “It’s exciting,” Robinson admitted. “I’m humbled by the experience to play in the PCCL in my first year as a coach. I want to take it as a learning thing to play against coach Norman Black. Everything is a blessing for me and I really appreciate it a lot.”

Ateneo, for its part, must win out against San Beda on December 9 to forge a rematch in the finals against San Sebastian. A loss means the back-to-back, defending PCCL champs must settle for a battle for third place with the Webmasters next week.

The scores:

San Sebastian 70 – Abueva 20, Sangalang 18, dela Cruz 11, Balucanag 8. del Rio 5, Miranda 4, Maiquez 2, Vitug 2, Ferrer 0

Ateneo 69 – Slaughter 16, Salva 13, Ravena 12, Long 9, Erram 8, Austria 6, Monfort 3, Chua 2, Golla 0, Sumalinog 0, Gonzaga 0, Tiongson 0

Quarter scoring: 17-17, 32-32, 53-58, 70-69

    inferior league daw? huh.

  • obf says:

Fil oil din diba 1 point panalo ng baste? Haha

  • waka-waka says:

Anu un by point? A win is a win. y@bang talaga ng mga taga UAAP…

  • pride of baste says:

Great win by baste.. Even without pascual they still managed to win.. This is pure heart.. Bravo Baste!!!

  • fortuneteller says:

Maybe the Semerads should have suited up to give the ADMU the win. One plausible reason for SBC’s loss to SSCR may be attributed to the two scoring machines “flying”the coop. Eagles na nga sila.

    • Z says:

to be frank, the semerads were never considered by Ateneo amid the rumors that they are transferring to katipunan. i’ve told sir E the facts i’ve gathered so it’s no use pitching that out. try coming up with something better next time.

  • Chieffy says:

Karamihan naman talaga ng teams hindi sinisiryoso ang pccl eh..tignan mu nga puro depleted ang line ups..pero sana ncaa manalo ngyong taon

    • a time to fly says:

If you look at the line-ups, mukang san Sebastian pa ang hindi nagseryoso eh. Admu had all of their guns playing. And big minutes too. So wag na tayong maglokohan, talo kami. :)

  • a time to fly says:

It all boils down to match-ups. Baste, along with Adamson gives ateneo hellish match-ups. Just like in any sport, when matched with a team that can capitalize on your weaknesses, there is no such thing as a clear favorite. Even during the pre-season, you
could see that baste’s strength matches ateneo’s weaknesses. I guess ateneo (pacquiao) found their marquez- pero nanalo si marquez hehe. I hope norman can adjust just in case we make it to the finals against the stags. Good game! One big fight!

    • obf says:

Haven’t you watched the “foot-stomping” to say that Marquez won?

    • nuthuggers says:

      excuses excuses excuses

      • A Time To Fly says:

Please highlight any excuse made on my part. The problem with people like you is that you are just a pure hater, no matter what the outcome or response to that outcome, you’ll just say we’re making excuses. The point of comparing pacquiao and marquez to the match-up is that though ateneo I great on paper (yes, I dare to say this kasi si coach Topex na mismo ang nagsabi nun), greatness is not won on paper. On the contrary, San Sebastian just proved how great a team they are with the wins over admu, sbc and adamson. The was said and made, I think you just can’t understand it. Don’t beat yourself too hard, we’re not all blessed with a sound mind.

  • obf says:

Tapos maraming nagsasabi Ateneo-biased tournament daw. :))

  • congrats baste….tough loss for the eagles….the lions versus the eagles should be an interesting match….composure mga recoletos….now is the time to focus…luck will not always be with your team….and ateneo was caught flat-footed…and bilog ang bola…and hopefully its an NCAA team for the PCCL champion…its good for business :)

    • Stagmatized says:

Ok lang siguro kahit di pa namin makuha ang PCCL championship this year… Beating both the NCAA-champs and the UAAP-champs in 2 days was already a huge achievement this 2011! ehehe. Icing on the cake na lang siguro yung PCCL crown… =Þ

      • muralla22 says:

well neverthless, NCAA team pa din sna mag.champion….i’m rooting for the stags to won the crown but if it goes to san beda, ok na din sa kin…:-)

  • PINE says:

kung naglaro si RONALD PASCUAL ang clutch player ng baste at si JONATHAN SEMIRA ang veteran guard malamang 10 ang lamang ng BASTE opion lang :D

    • obf says:

Maraming what if’s sa basketball. :) What if umabot three-pointer ni Long kanina? :D Pero what’s done is done na naman eh. :-j

      • nuthuggers says:

what if hindi 8 vs 5 ang laban? mananalo pa kaya ateneo kahit sa anong liga?

pati nga mga commentators pro-ateneo eh, saan naman kayo nakarinig ng hirit na “salva tore up baste’s defense in the 1st half” tapos pag tingin mo sa halftime scores eh 4 pts lang pala ginawa ni salva.

leave it up to the ateneo to make something out of nothing and to belittle the achievement of others.

    • no brainer comment says:

      no comment

  • correspondent says:

akala ko ba sabi niyo biased tournament tong PCCL in favor of Ateneo parati. At di nababase ang pinaka magaling na team sa pinas dito.

FYI: ang Semerad twins sa year 2014 pa pwede maglaro sa ADMU, sit out sila for two years. making them eligible to play only for 1 year sa ADMU. This shows na di naman talaga basketball ang habol nila sa paglipat sa ADMU. Media exposure at education… mag momodelo at showbiz daw kasi tong dalawang toh!

  • true blued says:

what an exciting game! as of now i believed this the best game in the pccl this year. i always admired turo valenzona mentored squads even before. congrats baste.

    • Sam says:

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t it that Topex Robinson already replaced Turo Valenzona even before this year’s NCAA season has started?

      • muralla22 says:

sir i think he is referring to the past squads that coach turo handled. especially the Adducul era wherein they reigned the NCAA for 5 years….i think topex was also part of that 5 peat squad

    • Escudo says:

nyaks bakit yan ang ID mo?

This is my GF’s email add. She once made an appearance as Bing Bong Crisologo. Was actually shocked when a different name and avatar showed up. But since the avatar is blue, I think I will keep it.

Sana nanuod ako nang live at nagdala nang palanggana, tapos hit it:
    Bam,
    Bam bam, bam bam.
    Bam bam, bam bam
    Bam bam, bam Go!! Ateneo!!
    Tararararan…

Aargh!! I expected this game to be an all out massacre!

    Congrats na lang Baste.

  • Crimson Fury says:

    Bravo!

  • Escudo says:

The Blue Eagles played not to get hurt. Their body language and facial expressions exhibited a kind of cautiousness that told you that they did not want to engage the Stags with physical play that might heat up into another bench clearing debacle. But, what they should have done was play it by ear. The Stags did not even employ any rough or dirty tactic whole game long. There was just this one incident where Miranda was holding Slaughter and Greg inadvertently elbowed his nose just trying to free himself up. The point blank misses of Ravena and blown lay ups of Salva clearly showed that they were taking shots thinking that they might be undercut or submarined in the process. Even Gonzaga can’t buy a basket. And our defense was timid or going thru the motions at best. Maybe, they were unnerved by the riotous game between the Lions and the Stags the previous day. About time to show some balls guys even against the hooligans of San Sebastian.

    • Innocent says:

Pag talo. TALO. Daming reklamo. Iyakin ka koya tanda mo na

      • WES says:

Perhaps you did not understand what he was trying to say? I would not be surprise at all if you did not based on the kind of language you try to engage a discussion with.

      • Escudo says:

why dont you get your own nic and be brave enough to face the wrath of your detractors…backless ka hiding in someone’s nic.

        Faker get a life!

      • Escudo says:

BUSTED!!!! Key operative WORD in the phrase is “OUR”:

“And our defense was timid or going thru the motions at best.”

Buking! You are an Atenean trying to flamebait…let’s see you get our of this…you were writing from the heart of an Atenean. Kaka hiya ka and most Ateneans will surely disown you.

    • another one of those silly bedan amplaya statement. tsssk! buti pa nga yung baste kayang talunin ang admu. how about yung koponan mo? when is the last time you guys beat ateneo? 1977?

      • WES says:

The observations may run merit Katipunan Kid. After all, the brand of basketball that Ravena, Slaughter, Salva, and the rest of the BEs are organized basketball. As compared with the other players in the league, the BEs are most intact system players. They play within a system. They are your typical Shane Battiers Duke-type of players. The gulang game the Stags have are different compared the gulang game of the Blue Eagles. It’s not unlikely Nico Salva can go Hal Jordan-esque as he is used to compared with other teams.

      • bystander says:

AFAIK, it was at the Fil-Oil tournament in 2008.

      • Escudo says:

thats the fake…tho he got to copy my and red rampants avatar to some degree of closeness.

    • WES says:

I think the Semerad acquisition by ADMU is for PCCL and FilOil purposes. They need the Stags familiarity that the twins have. Kidding.

    • goonihoo says:

      and your bases?

    • Escudo says:

what a fake…why dont you get your own nic and be brave enough to face the wrath of your detractors…backless ka hiding in someone’s nic.

  • Mav says:

Congrats Baste for the good win. I guess I spoke too soon earlier in the other threads, well it looked like the blue boys had it already but only to be spoiled by the Recto boys.

  • opiin says:

mlamang tambak na naman beda sa ateneo sa friday

  • blackman says:

bilog ang bola, we will don’t know till we get there

  • mark says:

    which match-up is more interesting?

    SBC-SSCR or SSC-ADMU?

    :)

  • bystander says:

All I can say is: Congrats Baste! Hope the PCCL goes to an NCAA school this year and by the looks of it, Baste has the greater chance over San Beda to win this thing.

  • WES says:

Z, I remember you saying months ago about JP Erram to breakout. It’s manifesting already.

    • excuse us says:

are you blind? naka block lang kay sanggalang superstar na si erram? tayo talagang mga ateneans oh.

      • Red Rampant says:

Ganyan talaga mga atenista manalo/matalo bida lagi. Mga sweetik na kups!!!

        • Z says:

oh, kinopya mo pa nic ni RR. ba’t ba dumadami ang mo at piolo sa IBP? haha. apparently, you don’t watch basketball (referring to the 2 imbeciles who posted above me). Erram was just a defensive specialist so to speak. i told everyone that he will break out not only on defense but also on offense. 11.5 ppg over the past two games is not something to sneer at coming from a guy who barely averaged 1.7 ppg. o siya piolo, tapos na ang 15 minutes of fame mo.

      • WES says:

Excuse us. Were you even paying attention to the previous games? Or, or, do you even understand the concept of manifest means? He is not yet in his peak or superstar form. On the accuracy of the term, I meant there are flashes of potential showing already. Or baka gusto mo itagalog ko para maintindihan mo? Bata, nakitaan ko lang na-potential. And for your sake, I’m a Thomasian with my formative years with Ateneo education. That being said, I’m objective. And please, if you are regular here, man up and use a consistent name.

  • excuse us says:

excuse lang, this is just one game, it was obvious that the boys were still feeling and sizing up baste.

  • well done says:

congrats in this win stags! galingan nyo bukas san beda team. tayo pa rin ang magkikita sa finals.

    • staggard says:

oo nman… the rivals of the off-season.. i’m expecting a close fight again. year in, year out parati nalang baste at ateneo ang nagbabanggaan. same old, same old nga naman. worthy opponents, worthy adversarys.

  • SK says:

bute na langs petiks na kami muna kung endi natsambakan lahat kayo. hihihi huhuhu

  • staggard says:

kaya naman pala pinirata ng ateneo ang twins ng beda eh, para manalo naman sila sa Golden Stags! rivals eh.. the only team who can beat them again and again.

    • Z says:

hinay hinay lang, late ka na sa balita. hindi namin kinonsidira ang kambal. puros painit lang iyon ng ahente nila. o ayan, tinagalog ko na para madali mo maintindihan at tigilan na ang pangunguryente sa balita.

      • britt reid says:

If the twins are not joining the eagles, and they are no longer with the lions, then they are floating in limbo. To which teams are they now selling their services? DLSU, FEU can afford to pay big bucks, also the now deep pockets bulldogs.

        • banned says:

eric altamirano already declined. dlsu has shown a lot of interest, makes sense for them to go there. feu should also make for a good second choice. that is if they really want to develop as basketball players. but if their aim really is to build up their popularity, then they should go to one of the glamour schools.

          • britt reid says:

It’d be better if one joins FEU and the other DLSU. Both gets playing time which may not happen if both are in one team. The exposure and media hype the twins will get will do wonder for their show biz careers, and more money for them and their agent. Si Annabelle Rama ba ang talent manager ng kambal?

          • britt reid says:

Imagine the hype, Semerad vs Semerad, battle of the brothers, etc. etc.

        • Z says:

they really are in limbo. they have the pbdl rule against them. if they go to ateneo, they can study but they cannot play. kawawa naman si vegafria.

          • banned says:

on the contrary, vegafria should be jumping for joy over this latest development. he can have the twins concentrate on their piolo-ing career. and he can piolo them to kingdom come. ang saya ng mga piolo!

          • WES says:

If a UAAP transfer will prosper for the twins, that would only mean 1 playing year?

          • Z says:

meh… i do hope montinola or danding just pick them up. i don’t like trash in my backyard. tama si Sir B. mag-piolohan na lang sila. tamang-tama, rowdy pa kasi tatlo sila *winkwink*

          • banned says:

wes, they’d have to sit out for 2 years. i dont think any self-respecting program would be willing to invest 2 years for players who will only get to play for a year. but then again, there may be desperate schools out there.

z, i was chatting with some former blue eagles the other day and they were unanimous in saying that they would not like for the twins to come in. as you’ve said, ateneo will not take another school’s trash.

pwede siguro sila sa pbb house na lang. dun sila magkalat ng pagka piolo nila. hehe

          • Escudo says:

They will only have 1 year to play since the UAAP rule is that you turn 25 yrs old before June. Their birthday is in April.

Where is the wisdom in sitting out 2 years and play for 1? Unless that doesn’t matter since they will have a movie/Tv careers during the waiting period.

          • Escudo says:

            sorry I meant after June.

Watched the replay of the game between the Eagles and the Stags. Hate him or love him, you have to admire Abueva for his physicality. He operates best when he’s banging bodies like a wrestler. He loves contact – both the legal and illegal kind – and if you back down, he will chew you alive. Just can’t wait to see him play in the Pros.
