Hot-shooting San Beda holds off UC

FACED with a zone defense for most of the game, San Beda College took the perimeter looks and made sure the ploy backfired on the University of Cebu in the second half.

After going 3-for-14 from beyond the arc in the game’s first 20 minutes, the reigning, back-to-back NCAA champions rebounded by making half of their 18 triples from halftime onwards, including five out of 10 in the final canto, to outlast the two-time, reigning CESAFI and Southern Islands bracket champion Webmasters, 83-77 in the 2011 Philippine Collegiate Champions League round-robin Final Four phase last December 6 at the Arena in San Juan.

“I think the important thing this afternoon was how we contained the other players [of UC],” said San Beda head coach Frankie Lim after the game. “Fajardo is such a big guy in the paint and we did our best to stop him, but, same thing, he [still] scored 24 points and had 14 rebounds.”

Leading by a point, 57-56, headed into the last quarter, the Webmasters snatched the lead on a pair of Junemar Fajardo baskets down low, 63-60. Rome de la Rosa countered with six in an 8-0 blast, making it 68-63, before an Edward Pao triple got UC within two once more with 6:33 remaining. De la Rosa and rookie point guard Baser Amer continued to bomb away from downtown, keeping their team out ahead. With time winding down, a stop and pop in transition by Gerald Ampoon pulled University of Cebu to within four, 1:34 remaining, 79-75, only to see Mar Villahermosa counter with yet another triple that padded the lead to 82-75 with 1:15 left, essentially putting the nail in UC’s coffin. Off a timeout, Fajardo made the difference five with 1:12 remaining, keeping his team alive. But, on the next possession, the Webmasters were unable to secure the rebound after a missed Villahermosa triple, giving the ball back to San Beda. Another offensive rebound allowed the Red Lions to burn even more clock such that when possession was finally awarded to the CESAFI champions, there were just 34.3 seconds left. And, after a missed triple by Luigi Bercede, all that was left was for the Red Lions to run the clock.

The Webmasters led by five at the start of the game, 9-5, after a triple by Pao, but it was all back and forth from that point on as neither side was able to build a sizable advantage. In the third quarter, a steal and a layup by Dave Marcelo and a transition basket by Villahermosa gave San Beda a 48-43 lead before UC countered with back-to-back triples from Ampoon and Bercede. Yet another triple, this time by Robinson Mohammad, and a post-up move by Brian Heruela, had the Webmasters threatening to enter fourth with the lead, 56-54 before leaving Amer wide open for a triple on the next play, setting up the fourth quarter shootout.

Playing with a depleted line-up, San Beda rode on de la Rosa’s shoulders. The versatile forward posted all-around of 25 points, six boards and five dimes to lead his squad. “Hopefully, that will help us next year,” said Lim, referring to the junior’s improved outside stroke. Villahermosa added 15 points, while blue-chipper Amer contributed 14 points, eight rebounds, five assists and two steals in one of his best performances in his young collegiate career. It was enough to make up for yet another quiet performance from their big men, Kyle Pascual and Marcelo, who combined for just six markers.

After playing just 14 minutes versus Ateneo the previous day, Fajardo played all but two minutes of the game, scoring 24 points and hauling down 14 boards. But the big man was clearly still feeling the effects of his knee injury, suffered while playing against the SWU Cobras in the Southern Islands final as his explosiveness while playing in Ormoc City seemed to have deserted him. Pao added 17 points, but just three after the break, while CESAFI Mythical Five selection Heruela never got off the floor, playing all 40 minutes and producing 14 points, 11 rebounds, five dimes and two swipes.

Despite playing against the 6’10″ Fajardo, San Beda was able to win the battle of the boards, getting 48 rebounds to the 38 of UC, including an 18 to 9 edge in the offensive rebounds category. The Red Lions were also able to get their running game going, zooming out to a 21 to 7 bubble in transition points.

With the win, San Beda was able to forge a win-or-go-home game for the last spot in the finals on Friday, December 9, against the Ateneo Blue Eagles. The winner takes on the San Sebastian Stags, armed with a twice-to-beat advantage regardless of who they face in the championship. “It’s a matter of pride,” said Lim of the match-up. “We’ll see what we can do, and try to limit [Greg] Slaughter and [Kiefer] Ravena.”

Meanwhile, the University of Cebu will look to salvage their trip to the capital city with a win against the Stags on Thursday, December 8, though the result will not have an impact on the two teams’ seeding.

The scores:

San Beda 83 – De la Rosa 25, Villahermosa 15, Amer 14, Sorela 7, Caram 7, Lim 6, Pascual 4, Marcelo 2, Pontejos 2, Koga 1

UC 77 – Fajardo 24, Pao 17, Heruela 14, Ampoon 10, Bercede 7, Mohammad 5, Batino 0, Auditor 0, Aranas 0

Quarter scoring: 20-22, 36-35, 57-56, 83-77

Kaya pa yan Red Lions, never give up kahit depleted kayo.

what a game that has earlier…i never expect that UC can keep close to san beda all game long….kung pumasok sna yung 3 point shot ni pao then the outcome can be the other way around……neverthless, grats RL’s.i guess the UC woke up on the wrong bed yesterday, thinking that they are still playing in visayas and this day they realized that their playing against the best collegiate teams in the country…

  • Feijao says:

It’s good to see Rome produce Garvo Lanete numbers. The future is indeed bright.

  • kudos to UC….honestly, the visayan teams are good….but due to lack of exposure to the metro teams, they fall short. hope that the format would be better next time. Grats, mga leon.

    • banned says:

yes sir! junmar is the prototypical center. this guy should be developed for the philippine team. imagine if he got exposed to bigger and better competition. imagine if he went to ateneo and trained under arguably the best big man coach in norman black.
that guy, pao can shoot the lights out. same goes for some of their shooters, ampoon and mohammad. but pao is on a whole ‘nother level. watch out for this guy. heruela is a very heady pg. he’ll create match up problems due to his heft. very smart player.
good luck to the visayan teams. i hope that the pccl is not the only means for you guys to showcase talents from down south.

  • excuse us says:

see, san beda is just a pedestrian team. they can’t even convincingly beat a bunch of streetballers. god, for their sake they shouldnt bother showing up on friday against us, we’ll just make mincemeat of them. rome dela rosa can’t even guard kiefer ravena with one of kiefer’s hands tied around his back.

    • leolite says:

Excuse me. UC streetballers? You are not a real atenean. Excuse me. Ateneans are more respectful. This, I want to believe with all my heart. Lets see on friday.

    • bystander says:

You do realize that you’re talking of a DEPLETED San Beda team with only 10 players, right? With 5 key players absent. No Sudan, no Garvo Lanete, no Jake Pascual, no Semerad twins.

Geez, you must have waited such a long time to get the chance to bash the Red Lions then. How come we never heard from you when the line-up was (almost) complete and we were winning?

Pagkakataon mo na toh! Make the most out of it!

      • banned says:

haha! haters nga naman. they just come out of the woodwork when we’re down no? whatever happened to those who doubted us before we won the “all-filipino” cup? geez. grow a pair, “atenean.” see you on friday.

    • SCD says:

i still believe na mas marami pa ring decenteng atenista rather that the likes of this.

true, even in media, merong mga atenista na kaparehas nitong isang to. but overall, they’re still a good bunch.

i just don’t why mas vocal ang mga tulad nitong isang to.

and please, don’t use the name of God in vain!!!don’t drag the name of God in such a useless comment!!!

  • fortuneteller says:

If SBC wins PCCL, they will be the best collegiate team this year.

If ADMU wins PCCL, they will be the best collegiate team this year.

If SSCR wins the PCCL, there will be doubt as to which of the three is the best.

If ADMU misses the Finals, the 4 peat is nothing to brag about as no doubt the NCAA is the best collegiate league.

  • Sam says:

I never cheered for ADMU, this will be the first.

Represent the UAAP with pride ADMU! Win it all! :)

  • well done says:

congrats in this win red lions! galingan nyo bukas san beda team. tayo pa rin ang magkikita sa finals.

  • fortuneteller says:

If ADMU misses the finals with its complement intact, its claim as the best collegiate team is put in doubt. Arguably, tsamba yung panalo ng baste, even if ronald pascual was not there. But a loss to a decimated (not depleted) beda team on Friday will bolster the impression that ADMU as being the dominant collegiate team this year is pure hogwash.

    • fortuneteller says:

That being said, if ADMU gets past beda and wins the first game of the finals vs baste, I believe they can go all the way to win their third PCCL crown. Even if they lose to baste, they still have bragging rights over the others. But failure to make the PCCL Finals which was “tailor fitted”, “manipulated to favor them”, etc. etc., will make them the laughing stock of DLSU. ha ha ha

    BASER AMEEEEEEERRRR!!!!

  • redgla says:

boxing na lang laro ng bedA mas maganda, magaling dyan si frankie lim pati team nya, prblema nga lang gusto nila womens volleyball team kalaban nila hehehehehehe

  • sketch says:

The way the semerads announced their transfer kinda reminds me of a certain someone who announced his transfer to another team via a TV special.

  • britt reid says:

Although a no bearing game as baste already got top seed by beating beda and ateneo, I hope UC beats the stags to salvage from ignominy their participation in this year’s PCCL. At least they can claim they beat the champs, if ever the stags get the crown.

  • Suki ni Mang Roger says:

A depleted line up as against a complete one, I just hope for a close game. As well, this would not really reflect who the best team is IMO.

One thing that would be nice to watch is the Hammer vs the Phenom match up… Though if it would be close, who knows?

    GO SAN BEDA FIGHT!

  • r3xleo says:

the odds will be against san beda in todays game. no gabo, jake the snake is still sick, the snake twins just sneaked their way out of the lions den to go to the eagle’s nest, emotions still high over that incident with ssc volleyball coach, we need a miracle to pull this off. just beliv in the hammer power.
