San Beda gets back on track, rips Altas

HOST school University of Perpetual Help System Dalta gave defending champion San Beda College a big scare in the second half, destroying big leads and getting to within single digits twice. Ultimately though, the scares were just that, scares, and the Red Lions were able to hold on for the win, 69-55 at the start of the second round of the 87th season of the NCAA last August 22 at the Arena in San Juan.

“Sloppy kami sa third quarter, [when] we gave up 25 points,” said San Beda head coach Frankie Lim. “I thought we would coast after the first half but they had a good run in the third.”

A booming triple by fifth-year hotshot Garvo Lanete helped build a 17-point lead, 33-16, with 40 seconds left to play in the first half, but Anthony Paulino successfully completed an and-one play off a Ryusei Koga foul to make it 33-19 entering halftime. Out of the break, back-to-back jumpshots by Michole Sorela and Lanete gave San Beda its biggest advantage of the game at 18 points, 37-19. That was about the time the Altas found their groove, firing a 10-2 run that cut the lead of the Red Lions down to 10, 39-29, with 6:12 left to play. An and-one play by Rome de la Rosa pushed San Beda’s lead back up to 13, 42-29. But, Perpetual Help was still going strong, nailing back-to-back triples to trim the deficit to just seven with 4:38 remaining. Charities by Kyle Pascual and a layup by Mar Villahermosa brought it back to double-digits again at 47-36 for a short moment before Jett Vidal got into to the mix, chipping in with a layup and a triple that sandwiched a trey by Jaycee Asuncion to get within a triple of tying San Beda, 47-44, with 1:56 left in the third.

Unwilling to lose for a second straight time, the Red Lions banged out a 10-0 run spanning the third and fourth quarters to arrive at 57-44, with de la Rosa playing the role of catalyst thanks to his two layups and an assist to Jake Pascual. The Altas still refused to go away, getting to within six on a 9-2 blast that ended with another long-bomb by Asuncion, 59-53 with 4:43 remaining. But, the offense finally dried up, as the hosts scored just one more field goal from that point on, allowing the Red Lions pad their advantage all the way to the final score.

The two Pascuals of San Beda led the way, with Kyle coming off the bench to tally a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds, plus four blocks. Jake Pascual added 13 and eight boards, while de la Rosa flashed his all-around game with 13 points on 50 percent shooting, six rebounds and five dimes.

Jaycee Asuncion led the Altas with a career-best 15 points, sparkling from outside with a 4-for-5 clip. The starting frontcourt of Justine Alano and Anthony Paulino combined for 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Chris Elopre posted seven points, six rebounds and seven assists.

The Red Lions leaned on their superior team play, doubling the Altas’ 11 assists. Despite their height disadvantage, Perpetual Help managed to edge San Beda slightly in the offensive rebounds category, 17-16. What kept the Altas in this game was their perimeter defense, holding the Red Lions to their worst percentage this season from beyond the arc, 2-of-16, or 13 percent. Their previous low came against the Altas as well, when they shot two for 14 in the season-opener.

“My guys are tired, dahil sunod-sunod ang mga laro,” admitted Lim. “But now we’re going to have a 10-day break. We should be well-rested.”

San Beda bounced back from its first round loss to the San Sebastian Stags, improving its record to 9-1. The Red Lions take a long break before playing the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals on Friday, September 2. Perpetual Help, for its part, absorbed its ninth loss in 10 outings, but will play again on August 26, against the Saint Benilde Blazers.

The scores:

San Beda 69 – K. Pascual 15, J. Pascual 13, de la Rosa 13, Lanete 9, Marcelo 6, Koga 5, Villahermosa 2, Lim 2, Sorela 2, Amer 1, D. Semerad 1, Pontejos 0

Perpetual Help 55 – Asuncion 15, Alano 11, Paulino 9, Vidal 9, Elopre 7, Thompson 3, Parico 1, Arboleda 0, Sumera 0, Sison 0 , Tonggal 0

Quarter scoring: 15-6, 33-19, 49-44, 69-55

  • Oh Behave says:

jesus christ, is this how pedestrian this beda team is? just shows you the lions can’t win a title without an import.

    • Dennis says:

      SBF?

      • Spinning Back Fist says:

Oh no. Not this year. I still think that the recruitment of foreigners is morally wrong, this season, wala muna akong ibabanat.

    • RV5 says:

Huh? what are you talking about?..the last time I looked, the Red Lions have a 9 (wins) against a lone defeat…..without Sudan Daniels…..and the season isn’t over yet…pedestrian?…lol..i wouldn’t talk if Im from any of the 9 other schools in the NCAA…be nice!

    • Suki ni Mang Roger says:

@Oh Behave – I don’t know where you are getting this from, but the Lions are still very much in track in defending the title. The streak was broken, and what better than to a good team at that. And it was a good loss for the boys, might I add.

Just to put things in the right perspective, defending the tile is the target, not the winning streak…

      GO SAN BEDA FIGHT!

      • Oh Behave says:

ows? you’re team’s a donut without an import, i mean daniel. you’re bigs couldn’t even snare that rebound during the dying seconds plus maiquez hit on two consecutive layups in front of pascual and marcelo. oh and guess what? you’re team couldn’t even take advantage of abueva and del rio getting into foul trouble early. and to top it all that antipuesto kid totally outplayed amer at both ends.

        • bubuchacha says:

dude, ang sakit sa mata ng grammar mo.

YOUR kasi, hindi YOU’RE. if you’re gonna troll, do it properly. balik ka sa grade school ha? then you’ll have a better shot at trolling this board properly.

          • Suki ni Mang Roger says:

@bubuchacha – I was trying to be polite and not take this below the belt. But then again, there’s another student that made his/her alma mater squirm.. haha!

i only know of one person here who has never learned the difference between the abbreviated form of you are and your. and i would not be surprised if this is the same she-male. she’s created a bunch of characters here in ibp, from an atenean muay thai prodigy to a fighting maroon and even bingbong crisologo, that he’s forgotten which team he’s rooting for. give it a rest, kid.

          • Dennis says:

Oh behave, did you watch the game/games? Your words are beyond your comprehension of how the game went and your principles show your character. However, a win is a win. The season is not over. Your Harold Camping analysis gives us the impression that you consumed a donut and placed a hole in your head wherein logic spilled out. Please… not again.

          • banned says:

nice of you to admit for once. no need to forgive, i never apologized. never will. not to you.

        • Suki ni Mang Roger says:

Whatever makes you happy, I guess you failed to see the 8 wins prior to the loss, have you? And in all those games, was there an import that made the difference?

And plainly put, we lost a battle, but not the war.

        • Hellboy says:

          Oh Behave,

SSC-R defeated SBC with your so-called import Sudan in Season 85 Finals. JRU (last year) with Etame and Njei in-line failed to grab the Finals. And yes, win is a win but a 2-point lead isn’t much a doubt to prove SBC can win at all. Too early to tell BIG mouth. Lol!

        • andoy says:

may hangover ka pa last week ah…

        • red rampant says:

Jose, I get you point. But then are you pertaining to past participle or present participle? Anyway, just to cut it short, Sudan is already studying. Just to provide you with more info, Rome dela Rosa and Kyle Pascual are also American citizens, if your point is citizenship.

        • bystander says:

But you have no problem with an Indonesian citizen playing for Mapua, a Chinese and Korean citizen playing for Perpetual, or a Cameroonian playing for JRU?

Is it just Americans you hate? What about the Fil-Ams? Practically all teams have at least one and they are all US citizens.

What about the American citizen who played for Letran? And that pure-American who is the star striker in Baste’s dominant womens volleball team who is playing alongside the Thai citizen?

You logic defies me. Oh wait, that’s because you have none.

          • Suki ni Mang Roger says:

I think this dude is just p*ssed that the SBC program works. So even if brought in a Senegalese that does not know squat about the game and taught the basics and eventually gets to be another revelation, they will still accuse us of something else.

So I suggest to the haters, instead of getting yourselves all worked up with the den’s system, go back to your school and vent your angst on them… hehe

          • Escudo says:

At (all) forums in the UAAP and NCAA he is a hater of all schools.

Don’t hate Ola ha. He has been serving his residency for more than 2 years now. So he is legally elegible. He is 19 and from a gaunt physique now to a powerfull beefed up physique. San Beda has been the pioneer of not recruiting but developing players both in its high school and college basketball program.

    • oo nga says:

@oh behave….watch your words! the war isn’t over yet.

    • banned says:

we’ve been waiting for all you haters since the last game. what took you so long? and please, no using of the Lord’s name in vain here.

let me indulge you a little bit. i’m feeling a bit generous sharing my time with i’diots like you. ok, let’s see. we won 8 straight games before the game against baste last week. in case you didn’t read the nice article written by charlie cuna recently, most critics cannot even be sure which is the better team still. that’s what a 2-pt loss can do. baste has bragging rights for now, but even they cannot say that they are the better team. you think they are going to the 2nd round thinking, “hey, we own san beda now. we won’t even have to prepare for that game cos we already won that first round meeting with a 2 pt advantage!”

let’s fast forward a bit. say, san beda wins the championship this year. i’m not saying that it’s a foregone conclusion, but let’s just say that we do win it all this year. what would be your argument then? i just want to go on record here and hope that you don’t let oh behave’s character die and move on to the next one that hasn’t been totally embarassed. just sayin..

        • Red Cafe says:

Nice Z, thanks. But on second thought do you think these ball hogs would care? Especially if padding their stats are on the line. Saswapangin talaga ang bola!

          • Z says:

all i can say for abueva is, he sure wants to win and makes sure they win as a team. and being the top assist maker on the team well, the ball-hogginess is justified, ala lebron nga lang. the others well, you be the judge sir. all i can say for BRP is, if he doesn’t score, most of the time, they fail, if he scores, they still fail. sayang though.

          • Escudo says:

Point Forward, meron palang ganun ano.

          • Spinning Back Fist says:

            @ Escudo?
Magic Johnson I think is a point forward. So is Don Nelson. I think the point guard of the Australian National men’s Basketball team is a muscular 6’8, but he’s the one who’s responsible for bringing down the ball and orchestrating. Point Guard duties yun di ba.

          • Knightstrike says:

            @Spinning Back Fist

Magic Johnson is a PG. Yes, even though he’s 6’9 and does other duties, his main role has always been to make plays and dish out the ball to the rest of the 4. So hence, he’s a PG.

If you wanted to mention a proto-typical Point Forward then you should have said Scottie Pippen instead. While he did some ball-handling and play-making duties for the 90s Bulls, it’s not his main role. His main role was to be the secondary scorer and to guard the opposing main scorer. Plus some additional rebounding, hence why he’s called a Point Forward.

In the NCAA, Coach Topex is trying to make Abueva play as a Point Forward. He will probably be relegated to a guard position when he goes pro because of his 6’3 height but at present, he is a forward. And he does play the forward spot very well. But he still needs to work more on his passing game and ball-handling skills.

          • Anti-heat says:

Best example of a point forward will always be the Big O, Oscar Rebertson and Scottie Pippen. Abueva plays more like a Charles Barkley and Anthony Mason in a sense that he may lack some height but not athletic ability and the desire to get those rebounds.

          • what about pistol pete maravich? he was the prototype. at 6’5, he was a pg. in the 70′s.

abueva plays like a small dave cowens or tuttie fruitie from chicago bulls (forget his name).

          • Dennis says:

@Knighstrike Magic did play power forward in the 90′s during his comeback attempt. I forgot what year. May maishare lang lol

          • Dennis says:

Abueva plays like a smaller Harvey Carey.

          • sketch says:

if we’re talking about point forwards, how can we forget larry bird and chris webber?

          • banned says:

scottie pippen played that point forward to perfection. the 1st championship against LA where he hounded magic johnson on d proved to be the game changer in that series. man, i miss those old chicago bulls games. i haven’t had any real team to cheer for since mj, scottie and rodman have retired.

          • Escudo says:

Now Escudo is enlightened. Thanks all.

        • banned says:

nice article again, z. i think the teams most affected by these ball hoggers are feu and mit. i think their teams should be considered title contenders, but the inability of their ball hogging players to share the ball with the reigning league mvp and a dominant center, respectively, just knocks them out of contention.
if i were rr or yousef, i’d probably be throwing fits on the court, too.

        • red rampant says:

Thanks Z. These players defeat the purpose of team work. Basketball is a team sport played by 5 PLAYER in the court. “One can not carry the burden and emerge as a hero”.

    • red rampant says:

Please make it capital J and C, Jesus Christ if you were calling Him. Now if it is your form of idiom to use His name, then spare us from your wrath of misdemeanor. Kindly do not put His name in vain. We do not identify God as god. You should have learned that in grade school.

Garvo Lanete and Jake Pascual must play above their usual games for San Beda to upend San Sebastian this season.

  • banned says:

something is just not right, the team as well as the red army just didn’t seem all too interested in winning this game. just an observation, from where i was sitting earlier, it seemed we were all too content going thru the motions and. it wasn’t until the 7th or 8th minute mark of the 4th quarter when the team decided to play. lack of focus all around. i hope the team doesn’t lose sight of the bigger picture. yes, we want to avenge that loss against baste, but we need to know that unless we get to that game with just 1 loss, it would not matter all that much. we seem to have lost that killer instinct. was it the back to back schedule?could be.

baste seems poised to steamroll their way to the finals, i hope our team will be up to the challenge.

we pride ourselves as being the most supportive of all collegiate basketball fans out there, we didn’t show it in our last game and we clearly didn’t show it in this game. yes, we filled up the arena last friday, but where were the indians? let’s go, red army. the team needs our support. let this game serve as our wake up call.

    • Suki ni Mang Roger says:

That’s right Sir Banned – Bring back the Indians!! I just don’t understand why they have not been used… It presents a different aura and pride (not to mention arrogance) when those little boys and girls come out with the axes and war paints on… Livens up the crowd and boosts the morale of the team as a whole… Bring back our Indians! UMPA UMPA UMPA!!

      • sketch says:

i guess it has something to do with time. since it takes almost the entire halftime break when our indians perform, they probably just opted to use the red corps instead, so that equal opportunity will be given to the other school’s cheering squad. just my 2 cents.

        • banned says:

it wasn’t a problem before so i don’t think they should use that as an excuse now. let the other team perform first. that would be even better as our players come out of the locker room to the ruckus that is the indian yell. that should fire them up.

          • sketch says:

well, there’s also this “rule” wherein the team that leads at the half gets to perform first. but to tell you the truth, i really miss the indian yell during half time breaks. it really gets the bedan crowd all revved up!

      • banned says:

some alumni groups are already making efforts for the halftime performance on oct12. this is all well and good as our alumni takes an active role in supporting the team. the downside to this is, why just for the baste game? yes, we do want to avenge that loss. but at the same time, the games before that are just as important. as i’ve said, it doesn’t make any sense to prepare for the last game of the season, esp if we can’t get there with just the one loss we have right now. let’s all support the team on the upcoming games.

        • Suki ni Mang Roger says:

I agree with you 100%, all games are crucial, and from here on end, the RLs must be focused for each and every game. Personally, I feel that the Indian Yell should be reserved for the “important games” meaning those that need the crowd pumped up so that the energy is transferred to the team. I will not mention schools so as not to offend anyone…

  • defendor says:

as expected, hay wait nalang ulit natin beda vs baste.the only game that matters in NCAA,other team are not in the level of thios two teams, sweep etheir by beda or baste is always expected, just my two cents :)cheers

    • muralla22 says:

      @defendor
watch out for your words.rmember that there are teams that cane close against baste and beda. CSB almost pulled an upset against sbc. and even our team almost pulled it to the end against baste but lose our steam in the end game. the level of competition this year have improved so every team was no push over. I will remind this to you my friend that SBC and Baste was not a big fishes in a small pond so mag.ingat ka sa sinasabi mo na hndi namin ka.level ang beda at baste

      • sketch says:

true. both teams can’t afford to be complacent against the other teams in the league jus because they are on top right now. expect these teams to come at them with everything they got. Letran is always a dangerous team. mapua, if they get their act together, can be a threat in the 2nd round. it is to early to tell if SSC may sweep the elims. don’t forget: “bilog and bola.”

    • iceman says:

      LOL! ^^

  • L2Cardinal says:

What matters the most is everybody plays ball. Challenge sa players to beat teams with foreign players. Challenge din sa schools to up their recruitment schemes to get better players. US NCAA college teams nga, have foreign players on their rosters eh. Check nyo yung Butler, they are recently making waves kahit maliit yung school nila. At the end of the day, coaching and basketball system ng school ang magpapanalo sa team. ^_^

HL, the truth of the matter is that even Joshua Torralba went to SBC first and we were given game highlights. We told the mother respectfully to visit us at the Abunasser camp. not when it’s one of our highly coveted red cubs. as early as now, i have arvin tolentino to be the number 1 HS prospect for 2013. i’m all for fair play with regards to recruitment but teams with bedans on their coaching staff have an advantage over other recruiting teams, that’s for sure. now if the situation is different, wherein one of our red cubs will not be able to make the lineup, i’d be more than happy for them if they could make it with other good basketball programs like ateneo or la salle. it may be a bit unreasonable, i admit, as all HS players are fair game for recruitment, i just feel bad that it’s a bedan doing the poaching.

    • red rampant says:

Honestly, some of the recent championships last (25 years) of teams in the UAAP were highly contributed by a former player of San Beda. No doubt that even the coaches would agree. Even today, some teams in the UAAP and NCAA have bedan players to lift their teams. At present, San Beda Red Lions can not accomodate much of the interested players as the slots are limited. This may depend on graduating or non elegible players. Next season, Red Lions will sure have a vacancy of 4 but may extend to 6 players. The question is, who are the 4-6 players? More players from here and abroad express their intentions to study and play/reside in San Beda. Just imagine 11 players of the most competitive high school basketball team in south east asia or even asia (San Beda Red Cubs) are graduating. Everyone wants to play for the Red Lions. So most of these Red Cubs players will go into other teams.

@banned.. haha Mr. JJ? :) guessing..? hmm..?

  • Hungry Lion says:

@Sir Escudo – agree sir, lahat ng maganda asa highlights. :) walang errors and turnovers.. May new recruit si Coach Ato Batolato na willing to play for the RL, unfortunately 2yrs nalang ang pwede niya istay. Still im looking forward for next year. Hope makita ko kayo one of this days sir. Got lots of trivias and question to ask. haha :) God Bless! Btw, talked to Sam this morning. His planning to visit San Beda before the year ends. Hope this time totoo na. haha last year kasi di natuloy. :)

  • wye says:

guys wait lang, in the nmvp race…almazan is at #3? surprising ha. i read somewhere: abueva, pascual, almazan, sanggalang…nakalimutan ko un 5th.

    • Z says:

yep he is. i’m surprised at well and heartened at the same time. may pag-asa pa yung bata. sayang nga naman kung iisipin, mukhang mas magaling pa to sa peak performance ni Jason Ballesteros na ginawang punching bag lang ni ekwe.

      • Escudo says:

true am happy for the kid. last year he looked like he was just another bust. but hard work pays off. congrats big guy! arriba to you!

        • Z says:

exactly sir E. he just needs to cure his at-times butterfingers and needs some more muscle, then boom gilas material na tong bata.

    • banned says:

yep, read about that as well. that was a surprising turn of events. i thought it would have been jam cortes instead. good job, big man almazan. hope you turn into another faundooooo! boy i hated that guy, he just did everything for letran back then.

  • R65 says:

My Bedan friends, is it true that Sudan Daniels will be playing soon?…..got this from a reliable source………on another note…I agree that there is so much negativity when talking about the Red Lions’ Basketball Program…..parang ang daming bitter?…LOL…

    • college baller says:

yeah! medyo tama ka R65, arguably the San beda red Lion is have the most number of hater’s in all collegiate team in the country,

“the most hated team = SBC”

      • college baller says:

        *red lions have the most”

      • red rampant says:

If you are a champion, argubly, you will be the most hated team. Everyone would just want to snatch a win either they are a contender for the final 4 or a bottom dweller. Its a prestige to beat a team who swept the entire season last year. The championship was acheived with a winning style in high passion and good fashion.

        • kel says:

“If you are a champion, argubly, you will be the most hated team. ” Not true! ateneo is a 3Peat champion but they dont have a lions share of the hater’s( meron din pero hindi ganun kadami) mas marami parin FEU or even NU (dahil kay Sk)

          • banned says:

but ateneo does get its fair share of negative reactions from the teams they have beaten. issues ranging from buying out games, referees, to feu’s owner selling out games to them, to slaughter being an import, etc. the list goes on and on and it is bound to get worse, should they sweep this season. that’s the thing about filipinos.. when someone does well, it’s only because they cheated. and if you can’t beat, drag em down with you. can’t be any more true for the ncaa.

      • 4 Peat says:

they are the most hate team, dahil narin siguro sa ugali ng ibang bedans hindi naman lahat,:)

        • red rampant says:

The IBP Bedans never encouraged a rave of argument not unless someone clobbers San Beda College and the Red Lions. We never initiated such foul words or discriminate people, unless the person is an imbecile who comments as if he/she/it knows everything about the players of San Beda and collegiate basketball. We stand proud but not arrogant.

        • the same way your school also has students with bad ugali, d ba? all schools have them naman e. some more than others nga lang.

        • banned says:

well, we try to police our own ranks, but as you are very well aware, there are always some rotten apples. as i’m sure your school has them, too. i try hard not to generalize, but sometimes you can just tell if a certain sentiment as discussed here in ibp seems to be the general thinking of whole school.

      • Dennis says:

        Sino ba mga haters?

    • red rampant says:

Nope, he will not. If he gets well in time within the season, then VERY GOOD If he plays, GOOD. If he is well but will not play BETTER.

    • college baller says:

They dont get the respect that a champion team like ateneo has, but i think SBC deserve our respect! hindi naman nila kasalanan kung mahina at hindi effective basketball program ng ibang team sa NCAA, di rin nila kasalanan kung nasa mahina silang liga aside from baste, no competition at all(SBC and SSC-R is on a different spectrum), di nila kasalanan na ung mga import nila eh mas effective compare sa ibang import ng ibang team!

SBC is a champion team in their own right! so stop the hating and bitterness!

    • R65, that’s true. it’s hilarious that this phenomena wasn’t there BEFORE ’06. looks like maraming nabigla, LOL

  • i don’t get it IBP. that was a fair comment naman.
