Tolomia triple lifts FEU past UST

WITH the entire University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers defense keying in on him in the last possession, RR Garcia made the smart basketball play and kicked the ball outside to a wide-open Cris Tolomia, who drained the game-winning triple that carried the Far Eastern University Tamaraws to 62-59 win in Season 74 of the UAAP last July 30 at the Araneta Coliseum.

Normally known for their offense, the free-shooting Tigers switched things up on last season’s runners-up, playing bruising physical defense on them, especially on last season’s MVP Garcia and RP National Team member Aldrech Ramos. As a result, both players struggled throughout the game. But when the chips were down, Garcia turned to his teammates, who rewarded his faith in them down the stretch. “Sa akin kasi, alam ko iniisip ng UST na sa akin, ako ang titira talaga,” explained Garcia after the game. “Kaya nung nag-drive ako, kinolapse ako, pinasa ko talaga kasi may tiwala naman ako sa mga teammates ko.”

After a tightly played first quarter resulted in a slim 16-15 FEU lead, former rookie of the year Jeric Teng took over the contest, scoring six in an 8-0 run to swing the lead over to his side, 23-16. In the third quarter, back-to-back triples by Teng and point guard Jeric Fortuna extended the lead of the Growling Tigers to a game-high 13, 38-25. FEU fought back with five unanswered from Ramos and Tolomia to turn the game into a single-digit affair, 44-38, going into the payoff period.

With two minutes left in the game, Garcia found Ramos on a pick and pop play that finally overturned UST’s huge lead, 55-54 with 1:54 left to play. Fortuna, who has come up big for the Tigers all season long, was clutch yet again, though, burying a triple to make it 57-55 18 seconds later. Off an FEU timeout, UST’s shutdown defense prevailed again, with Karim Abdul spiking an FEU attempt into the scorer’s table and the Tams missing on two triples. On the other side, Abdul found himself on the receiving end of a denial, with Ramos closing out daylight. Quick as lightning, Garcia scooped up the miss and ran in it for a layup to tie the game.

FEU weren’t done yet, as Chris Exciminiano swiped the inbounds pass and laid it in easy, giving FEU a two-point, 59-57 edge with 37 seconds left to play. Turning to their star player, UST gave the keys to its offense to Jeric Teng, who drove down the lane but was unable to draw a foul. Carl Bryan Cruz and Abdul tangled for the rebound, resulting in a jump ball that the Tigers won. That allowed Fortuna to pull up for another jumper, tying the game with 24 seconds remaining.

Off its last timeout, the Tamaraws wanted to drain the clock and win, if possible, on a last-second shot. Shadowed by Teng, Garcia, who had missed two practices during the week due to a fever, killed precious seconds at the top of the key before finally turning on the afterburners and darting down into the heart of the UST shaded area. Biting on the maneuver, UST’s defense collapsed, leading to the kick out to Tolomia for the triple. WIth 2.9 seconds left and no more timeouts, the Growling Tigers barely crossed halfcourt, forcing Fortuna to heave up a shot that he missed.

Despite the victory, a critical FEU head coach Bert Flores later said that the team was giving too much emphasis on the offensive end, neglecting their defense along the way. “Sabi ko, paulit-ulit, ball movement. Sa bandang huli, share the ball and defense…Masyadong naisip nila ang opensa,” Flores complained.

A former member of the RP Youth Under-18 National team, Tolomia finished with 10 points on 4-of-12 shooting to lead the Tams. He also had six rebounds, three assists in two steals in his 24 minutes of play. Ramos also had 10, plus nine rebounds and four blocks. Hounded all game by Teng, who had previously shut down NU’s Bobby Ray Parks, Garcia had just nine points on 2-of-11 shooting, but finished with four dimes, including the last pass to Tolomia. “Mas malaki siya sa akin. Grabe talaga defense niya. Binabanga niya talaga ako. Kaya ako, gini-give up ko lang ang bola, binibigay ko sa mga teammates ko,” said Garcia of Teng’s defense. Further hamstringing the Tamaraws was the loss of JR Cawaling in the third quarter due to a knee sprain. Cawaling sat out of the rest of the game, but isn’t expected to miss any time in the future.

Aside from playing tremendous defense, Teng also led the Growling Tigers in scoring with 23 points. Fortuna added 16, and Chris Camus padded the stat sheet with eight points, seven rebounds, three assists, a steal, and three blocks.

The win was FEU’s third straight after a loss to the Adamson Falcons as they grabbed hold of solo second with a 4-1 record, with match-ups against the UP Fighting Maroons on August 4 and the Ateneo Blue Eagles, on August 7. UST, on the other hand fell to .500 with a 2-2 split after four games. On tap for them are Ateneo as well, on August 4, UP on August 7, and DLSU on August 11.

The scores:

FEU 62- Tolomia 10, Ramos 10, Garcia 9, Exciminano 8, Cawaling 7, Cruz 6, Bringas 6, Romeo 4, Foronda 2, Sentcheu 0, Fabian 0, Escoto 0, Knuttel 0

UST 59 – Teng 23, Fortuna 16, Camus 8, Ferrer 6, Abdul 3, Lo 2, Afuang 1, Vigil 0, Tan 0, Pe 0

Quarter scoring: 16-15, 21-30, 38-44, 62-59

Cardiac Game!!! Whew. Once again, the Growling Tigers are in a Game of the Year nomination.
Sayang lang. FEU was didn’t exactly played at their strongest, and RR Garcia was CONTAINED, AND NOT MALAS.

    • Together-on-three says:

Well, a great player will always find a way. UST’s maturity has killed them in this game. Very evident na si Jeric Fortuna and Chris Camus lang ang naglaro ng tight up to the last minutes, the rest kampante na specially Jeric Teng. But the Tamaraws were so cool, defended patiently and took shots at the right time. ^_^

  • What Everybody Said says:

Even though the loss is a bitter pill to swallow, I’d still hand it to the Tigers. During the last and post-Dylan Ababou era, UST can’t even play clutch like this. In the previous seasons, they would have the loss as early as the last 3 or 4 mins of the game. But, things have changed. They don’t lose their composure anymore. They don’t breakdown. The last play was just really on FEU’s end. Again, it’s a bitter pill to swallow, but I am positive about this. And, hopefully, next time, esp the latter stages of the tourney, the Tigers would show better clutchness and composure.

    • Crisostomo Ibarra says:

I really think the TIGERS need to improve on dealing with the pressure. They had several turnovers that led to FEU points. (Particularly the one that killed them during the inbound pass). Credits to Fortuna for making big plays after big plays. He has shown yet another beautiful clutch performance, only to lose in the end. I think the TIGERS badly need Fortuna on the floor for the court general skills because at least 50% of the time, they breakdown on offense. IMPROVE ON COMPOSURE TIGERS! We can’t lose games this way. Yet another heartbreaking loss for the Thomasian community.

    • Together-on-three says:

How about that last inbound pass by UST?

  • Anti-heat says:

Although Teng, played great defense against RR, I think his shot selection was once again questionable during this game. This game is really a sting for the tigers and you have to wonder if they are alright mentally after a meltdown like this one.

    • What Everybody Said says:

I wasn’t able to watch the game fully, was his poor and forced shot selections occurred when FEU was on a run?

      • Anti-heat says:

Well in his defense he was hot in the 1st half. In the 2nd half when shots weren’t falling he tried and tried instead of letting Fortuna setup the offense oh and I think he was the one who turned the ball over on the inbound pass.

        • oh well says:

          • Anti-heat says:

You have point there, I mean it was Jeric Fortuna against 3 FEU players on that inbound pass even a single tiger who went to the opposite court would have proven a big difference. Anyway as one of the vets of this team shouldn’t Teng be leading them by example, motivating them? There were a lot of open shots for other people yet he tried to play hero again. All teams have some sort of go to guys but the really good ones are those who are not afraid of the moment but at the same time is smart enough to look for the best opportunity to win. Jeric Teng has to realize he has a pretty good team around him, he needs to know the days of carrying the team on his shoulders are gone. Being talented is one thing but playing smart is more important to win games.

          • What Everybody Said says:

Oh Well and Anti-heat, I both agree with you, but the point is very clear: Jeric Teng should know how to take care of the ball. I’m just wondering, maybe the coaching staff is feeding Jeric Teng so that they could impress the Teng family and land Jeron? Just a theory me and my friends discussed.

          • KlatchZ says:

“All teams have some sort of go to guys but the really good ones are those who are not afraid of the moment but at the same time is smart enough to look for the best opportunity to win.” = RR Garcia

            nice game!

  • idolkositata says:

    nice game till the end.
    sayang panalo na, pinatalo pa.

  • Army Green says:

I was impressed by the run and gun game of the Growling Tigers. I thought they will beat FEU after leading most of the game until the last minutes. If only Coach Pido had remaining timeouts to set up a play after the Tolomia 3-point shot. I noticed why UST keeps on rushing the game whereas they have the lead resulting to bad passes and poor shot selection.

Sometimes, Coach Pido needs to tell his guards “Easy lang, lamang tayo, set natin ang play”

    • What Everybody Said says:

I think Pido is giving Jeric Teng no parameters with his license to shoot. Tsk.

      • Not into u says:

Naoobserve ko lang, mas effective si Jeric if he focus more on defense, hyaan nya si fortuna at ferrer. pag libre dun nlang sana shumoot si teng. Nung 4th qtr medyo inalat na si Jeric but he keeps on shooting.

        • Army Green says:

That RR Garcia pass to Tolomia wasn’t the play designed by Coach Flores. RR was expected to go for the drive in the last 6 seconds either for a lay-up or drop pass to Ramos. UST shut RR’s driving lane and it was by chance that Tolomia was open for the 3point shot.

        • What Everybody Said says:

Jeric Teng is a good lockdown defender. I think Coach Pido is keen on giving Teng a break since he will somehow captain the team the next 2 years. So far, his offense, nevermind his output, has tested waters unfavorably for the team.

          • Army Green says:

Jeric Teng exposed one of RR Garcia’s weak points in that game. I think Coach Pido needs to devise more end game scenarios/plays for the Growling Tigers.

          • What Everybody Said says:

That has been one of Coach Pido’s problem. I don’t know. He was a good clutch player during his time, but he has not translated it well and consistently in coaching. Coach Siot Tanquincen, we are waiting. LOL

          • gold eagle says:

amen. paging coach siot tanquincen or coach alfrancis chua… do your alma mater a small favor please. hehehe!

          • Army Green says:

Coach Siot Tanquincen is a better option. I think he’s got more experience and skills than Coach Pido. How about “The Flash” Bal David and Rey Evangelista as assitant coaches.

          • What Everybody Said says:

Do you guys remember the 2004 Brgy Ginebra Gin Kings Championship against the Red Bull Barako then? The fist title of Ginebra in 7 years? That line up included the often criticized lack of skills Andy Siegle and struggling and can’t live up to the hype, Rommel Adducul. Apparently, those two bigs were having troubles in the league. When Coach Siot came in, those two made the championship possible. Coach Siot put in to use Helterbrand’s super shooting and offense, hence the unpredictability. The back door plays of Adducul and Siegle were their primary weapon of choice. From disappointments to key cogs, that was how effective Coach Siot was. Also, Torraye Braggs, their import at that time. So, what if that happens? Fortuna can have that all day backdoor with the Karim,Afuang, and Camus. Then throw in Kevin Ferrer’s all around game. I don’t know. I feel it can work. I think Coach Pido has made it clear that if they will under achieve, he will resign.

          • What Everybody Said says:

IDK about Bal David being an assistant since he has not shown any coaching experience yet. But, who knows, right? Then, Ray Evangelista is an assistant with BMeg, I think. OR a skills coach? So, Rey might work also.

          • What Everybody Said says:

Coach Alfrancis Chua can redeem himself by taking the coaching job. That is he will win. We all know what happened with SLR stint

          • Army Green says:

Coach Siot, Alfrancis, and Rey would be a formidable coaching staff.

          • Army Green says:

It all depends on the POLITICS of school basketball program if they still decide to keep Coach Pido in the future then that’s it.

          • What Everybody Said says:

I think it does depend on the school politics, but Pido has already stated that he will step down if the Growling Tigers will underachieve.

          • Army Green says:

            @WES

UST has a good shot at the Final Four this year at no. 3 or better still at no. 2 spot.

          • FalconBridge says:

            @army green

is that for real?3 or 2 spot?no offense but i think both spots are already taken..

          • Army Green says:

            @falconbridge:

Ok, I will leave the no. 2 spot to the Adamson Falcons if that’s the way you prefer.

          • FalconBridge says:

            @army green

no..libre lang naman mangarap so why not go for the no.1 spot right?anyway libre naman ang 4th spot para sa dlsu and ust.. :)

          • What Everybody Said says:

@Army Green It has been my pre-season prediction that UST can rank as high as 3 and as low 6. Even though I know FEU has a 3rd strong line-up on paper, I still doubt they can lock the no. 3 spot, considering their long history with the disappearing act of some of their players. With UST having the capabilities of palying smooth offense and at the sametime lockdown defense with FEU like this, I think they can rank high as 3. This is a sorry loss.

          • What Everybody Said says:

@FalconBridge So, what you’re trying to say is that #4 is a long shot dream like for DLSU and UST?

          • FalconBridge says:

            @wes

what im trying to say is that the 4th spot belongs to either ust or dlsu..lets just stick to reality guys..and when it comes to reality, most probably adamson has the hold of the 2nd spot..

          • What Everybody Said says:

#2 is pretty much locked in, but I don’t believe the 3rd spot is. Like I said, we all know how long of a history the tamaraws have with players having disappearing act in the middle of the tournaments that affect their stability as a team. with the kind of game feu showed yday, and DLSU is a clear match with UST, feu can’t afford to play around with their chances.

          • Z says:

and the reality is, nuyles and co. will graduate without a ring. nothing is impossible FalconBridge. UST proved that in ’06 already. DLSU did it in ’07. Ateneo did it last year. the only impossible thing is, well, you can’t win against Ateneo. since you belittle other teams’ chances so much, here’s a dose of your medicine. to WES, it’s not over till the fat lady sings you proud Thomasian. keep on fighting. and maybe, the biggest cat would take down a falcon full of hubris.

          • What Everybody Said says:

Exactly my thoughts, Z. 2006, 2007, and 2010, not to mention, the 2002 season have been miracle or cinderella stories for the uaap. And also, Nuyles & co. won’t graduate with a ring. They are sure locked no. 2, but for the championship i don’t bet, but what i can give them is a benefit of a doubt. It’s just funny sometimes how some Falcons fans as little as an opinion own the no. 2 spot. I think they’ll have their wishes. They will have the no. 2 even in the finals. Then also, they might go back to rebuidling mode since their nucleus will graduate soon. I remain confident with my Tigeres. Little work is needed to be done. We are not just hoping for a fight unlike the last years, but even for the win. Who knows, this might be one of them miracle seasons of the uaap. I hope them cats can battle all birds the UAAP has with a good fight in the coming games. I believe we will. The exciting part is with the kind of competition our league has, everything is unpredictable.

          • Anti-heat says:

So who owns the no. 2 spot again? Just saying..

          • Army Green says:

            @falconbridge

Thing is DON’T COUNT YOUR CHICKENS YET. The Bulldogs have exposed lots of weaknesses of Adamson. 2nd round will be a different one.

          • What Everybody Said says:

FalconBridge, as much as I respect you being a Falcons fan, but you have to float your boat the way you put it. You know, sticking to reality. So, how about this. NU and UST played a close match, DLSU crushed NU, UST and DLSU on paper is believed to be a match, you only won by 10pts against the Tigers who had Teng overshooting the ball, FEU who you believe is a sure 3 needed a strong come from behind win against the Tigers. With that, sports 3 to 6 is a rumble. Or should I include the number 2 now? So, the fortune cookie on every wise men’s oven hasn’t been baked yet.

          • blue24 says:

with all due respect to everyone, i don’t think anyone is locked in – at least not YET. Only five games have been played out of the 14. Ateneo maybe undefeated now, but the team nearest to them only has one loss (FEU), so 1 loss by the Eagles can make a difference, how big, we just have to see.

and as for those saying that certain spots are already “taken” – well, last season one team’s fan base already “claimed” themselves as champions even before they made the F4; they even made a facebook page with the title “Season 73″ champs, then what happened?

I consider this one of the most competitive seasons, anyone can make it (well, maybe except UE, no offense to their supporters). Bilog ang bola

          • FalconBridge says:

well a lost to nu doesnt make the falcons out of contention..this loss will probably make them realize that if they will not work 110% against any team they will suffer like what happen vs nu..anyway my only point is that ust and dlsu are equally matched teams..nuff said..

          • Anti-heat says:

No FalconBridge, what you were trying to say is that Adamson has a lock on the no.2 spot, what you were also trying to say was that DLSU and UST are only fighting for the 4th spot. Let’s see now, DLSU and Adamson share the 3rd spot and by virtue of us beating the team that beat you (NU) we should occupy the 3rd spot. Nothing is settled yet, like I’ve said so many times it’s not how you start but how you finish. What we are trying to tell you is to simply not predict any kind of standings cause we are not even at the halfway point of the season yet, anything can happen.

          • What Everybody Said says:

Or claim the 2nd spot as early as 4 games into the season.

  • Not into u says:

Bad coaching by pido, he wasted his timeouts and not saving even just 1 when he needs it most. Good job by ust but then again fell short during clutch. Needs to improve their bench if they want to have a better run for the f4. Feu on the other hand should start waking their so called stars. They have the talent but hustle and defense is still a suspect. Tolomia saved the tams. Ust had this nothinv to be ashamed of

  • monsterkid says:

this is the true rivalry of uaap. the battle of S0CIAL CL!MERSZ

  • latest_idol says:

back to back dagger 3 pointer from Tolomia, He also sank a crucial 3 against NU that put FEU on a 1 point lead!nice game

  • baurdur says:

i feel that RR Garcia wouldn’t have given the ball to Tolomia if the game wasn’t tied, they got nothing to lose, its overtime or win, so he gladly gave it up. if they were down and needing a game winner, he would’ve taken it, no doubt.

  • gold eagle says:

as the old basketball adage goes, it’s not how you start rather it’s how you finish. sayang maganda pa naman yung laro ng ust sana.

at san ka pa? mid-4th Qtr pa lang ubos na lahat ng timeouts nila???? classic. only pido can do something like that.

    • What Everybody Said says:

I just wonder, what were all his assistant coaches doing at that time. Weren’t they supposed to keep track? Or was Coach using it? It’s hard to accept it, but it was a dum mistake.

      • gold eagle says:

        coach pido : “timeout! timeout!”

asst coach : *busy nag-t-tweet* “ay coach last timeout na natin yang tinawag mo…”

        coach pido : &@$%^#%!

seriously speaking though, kahit mga naglalaro lang ng NBA Live or 2K series sa game consoles alam na one should save at least one timeout for end game use, especially kung dikit ang laban.

        • Army Green says:

@goldeagle: you’re absolutely right, the last timeout should always be used in the dying minutes/seconds to set up a play and to give your players a breather. That’s one of the basics of basketball coaching.

        • What Everybody Said says:

It’s just a bitter pill to swallow. I hope they regroup and end this 2-game winning skid, problem is though, I think the next opponent is Ateneo.

          • calvin says:

Let’s just see…As for the Blue Eagles, the last two games are for mental and character build-up…The next two games including your prestigious school (next) will measure the preparations…Good luck at the games!

          • What Everybody Said says:

2-game losing skid pala. Thanks, calvin. I hope we could pull an upset. We really need one. I hope the bitter loss will be channelled to a good game with the eagles.

  • easterntiger says:

maraming close games na naipanalo dapat ng ust kung magaling lang sana ang coach. sadly pido is not a good tactician. it’s been downhill since 2006 and we had produced 2 mvp’s in dylan and jervy but we’ve never reached the finals or finish the season at a respectable level. i believe its time for change.

  • FalconBridge says:

    pido/coaching staff = epic fail
    jeric fortuna = super clutch
jeric teng = ui hawak ko ang bola,so pano shot ko na to
chris camus = solid as always

obvious naman kung sino ang dahilan ng pagkatalo ng ust..sayang ang effort ng players..isa pa hindi mo yun pwedeng tawagin na breaks of the game dahil nasa control yun ng coaching staff ang pag monitor/manage sa timeouts nila..tsk tsk..im rooting for ust pa naman sa game na to..anyway lessons learned pero dapat alam na nila yun specially pido,5 years ka na nakatira dyan sa ust..tsk tsk tsk nalang..

  • Black and Gold says:

    Disappointing loss.
Could’ve been 3-1 but now its 2-2 and looks like La Salle will go for the tie against UE tom and by Thursday, possibly UST will slid to 2-3 since we will be facing Ateneo.
Controlled 3 qtrs. only to collapse on the final minutes
    Epic loss for the tigers.
Again it is not how you start, its how you finish.
Consistency & Resiliency was name of the game after.
    Good game for FEU congrats.

  • idolkositata says:

after the 2006 championship, we produce 2 MVP’S and 1 ROY but no championship.

    • Blues Clues says:

maybe its time to ditch Pido.

      • What Everybody Said says:

Coach Siot Tanquincen is now an assistant coach. He can HEAD coach a collegiate team now. TJ Manotoc once tweeted that he got to talk with a UST alum last year suggesting that Pido’s time has ran its course and it’s the perfect time for a new system.

      • Left_Handed says:

Maybe pido is not the problem, maybe the team is lack of players at 5 spot at least you have now ferrer at 3. Abdul is a rookie and enexperience.

Sama mo sa mga MVPs produced si Allein Maliksi bro.

  • Blues Clues says:

UST gave up so many offensive rebounds and that cost them the game. Nuf said.

sayang uste.. and Jeric Fortuna made a believer out of me. this kid is CLUTCH, sayang lang his team ran out of timeouts. and that Tolomia dagger of a triple. and kudos to Camus, for not giving up on every play. he was, I think, one of the primary reasons UST got the lead during mid game. his hustle and crash mentality ignites spark for the whole team. sayang lang talaga at hindi nanalo..

well, congrats FEU! it was a nice win, a hard fought victory at that. and the game! ika nga pukpukan nung huli!

  • Crisostomo Ibarra says:

Tigers played well for 3/4 of the game. They contained the offense of FEU, they also had a good game offensively. Particularly for Jeric Teng, who easily has the best performance of the season so far. Sometimes he’s up, sometimes he’s down. He should have the consistency factor. I noticed K-Fer had an atrocious game offensively, He was given shots but did not deliver. Perhaps rookie instincts has finally come on the kid, but I credit him because of his IQ, not having a good percentage on outside shooting, he willed to basket more but shots was just not falling for him. Tigers should improve on dealing with pressure. As we are all familiar with the line: “It’s not about how you start, but it’s how you END it.”

hi crisostomo…we would really prefer calling him KF instead ok k-fer to distinguish him from ravena…but agreed that this is his 2nd off game in a row. he should learn how to post up more efficiently though, anlaki ng advantage nya sa mga 2 and 3 guys ng ibang team.

Sorry for the typo, **Shots were not just falling. How silly of me.

Panis pala kay Cris Tolomia dalawang ust players ang gustong sumupalpal sa “For the winning shot ” ayun resulta tameme ang tigers bali ang pangil at bahag ang buntot..overconfindence kc naka lamang lng eh kala panalo na eh last seasons finalist yata yun kalaban nila..more practice dude!

whew…i’m late, ayaw kasi magload nitong site sa bahay…anyway it was a great game but an awful loss once again. does anyone else notice that ust plays good in only 3/4 qtrs each game? nu they stunk in th 2nd, ue they stunk in th 4th, adu they stunk in the 1st and now against feu again in the 4th. what is up with those guys? anyway 2-2 is still within expectations. we knew we would lose to feu and adu…but at least now we also know that we have a shot at beating them when in the years past we couldn’t. agreed that the coaching staff was a disappointment…and jteng was the player who collapsed the most. again, we are still within expectations or even exceeding it. let’s keep it together and bumawi sa 2nd round. congrats tams…but you got exposed right there…better wake up your stars…and is cawaling’s injury serious? that would be a big blow..wala na nga si pipo e. anyway, you know what we say..go uste!!

Where is Kevin Ferrer now peeps?…I have been begging everyone sane here to tell me why the hell na may potential siyang maging ROY?…Diyos ko po!…pero sige, pagbigyan pa natin ng isa pang magandang just cause to believe…I am not a hater, its just facts…Sa huwebes, let us see…Good luck sa parehong teams!…Ang habilin ko sa Blue Eagles ang bench dapat umayos…Sa Growling Tigers naman, marami to mention…
