THE De La Salle University Green Archers held their archrival Ateneo de Manila University scoreless in the last 1:23 to carve out a 66-61 triumph under must-win conditions in the 2011 FilOil Flying V Pre-Season Premier Cup at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan last June 4.

Kiefer Ravena had found Nico Salva wide open for a game-tying jumper, 61-all, before the Blue Eagles missed all their attempts afterwards. Along the way, the comebacking LA Revilla scored on two key baskets that pushed the La Salle lead up to four, 65-61. The most senior Archer on the team, Simon Atkins, then sealed the game by splitting his free throws and sending his squad to the last eight of the tournament.

“We made some stops in the last few minutes,” said a beaming De La Salle coach Dindo Pumaren after the game.

With the win, the Green Archers managed to sneak into the top four of Group A with a 4-3 record. They’ll face the top-seed in Group B, Far Eastern University in the quarterfinals on Monday, June 6 at 4 p.m. The Blue Eagles, on the other hand, fell to 5-2 and lost out on an opportunity to clinch the number one spot in the group, which went to San Beda College through the quotient system. Ateneo takes on Mapúa at 11 a.m. this coming Monday as well.

Ateneo led at 4-1 early in the first quarter, but couldn’t get their shots to fall until there was 1:24 left in the canto, allowing the Archers to surge ahead 17-10.

DLSU seemingly couldn’t miss, as it piled on field goal after field goal to surge ahead by as much as 12, 32-20, after a Joseph Marata jumper. Ateneo rediscovered its groove at that point, closing out the first half on an 11-4 run capped by a booming triple by Emman Monfort to cut the deficit to 36-31 entering halftime.

An early Green Archer onslaught rebuilt the lead to 39-31 behind a jumper by Norbert Torres and a charity by Joshua Webb. But pesky play from Ateneo trimmed things to just three, 48-45, after a split from the foul line by Justin Chua. A buzzer-beating Bacon Austria triple pulled the blue shirts to within a point, 49-48, with the final period left to play.

Two more charities by Chua gave Ateneo its first lead since the opening salvo of the first quarter, 50-49. But the ensuing play turned grim for La Salle as Torres hurt his elbow while trying to box out Ateneo enforcer Frank Golla. Torres had to be carried out and afterwards was taken to Cardinal Santos Hospital with an initial diagnosis being a hyperextended elbow.

Fueled by the injury, De La Salle unleashed an 8-0 blast that gave Ateneo a 57-50 hole to dig out of, which the Blue Eagles did by tying the count at 61 before Revilla’s mini-burst.

Revilla, who had missed the last two UAAP seasons because of a medical condition, led the Archers with 12 points, six rebounds and three assists. Marata added 10 points, while Simon Atkins tallied eight markers and four swipes.

Fresh off their summer training in Las Vegas, the Blue Eagles were led by Nico Salva’s 18 points and seven rebounds. Freshman sensation Kiefer Ravena added 10 points and six dimes, while the towering Greg Slaughter had just two points because of foul trouble, though he managed to reject four shots in just 12 minutes.

Ateneo mentor Norman Black said, “Give credit to La Salle, they wanted it more.” The architect of the Blue Eagles’ three-peat championship run also noted that “it’s summer. Our main focus is the UAAP. We’ll stay focused, and get better in July, and get better in September.”

The normally speedy Blue Eagles were held to just six fast breakpoints and got killed on the glass as they gave up 14 second chance points to the Green Archers. They also turned the leather over 19 times, five more than their tournament average, giving De La Salle 14 turnover points.

For the second straight game, the Archers were able to survive a horrible percentage at the line by building a big enough lead to shrug off their misadventures at the charity stripe. In this game, they hit just 10 of their 22 free throws, but they were able to overcome their Achilles’ heel thanks to their tough defense. W5

The scores:

DLSU 66 – Revilla 12, Marata 10, de la Paz 9, Atkins 8, Andrada 5, Paredes 5, Torres 4, Mendoza 4, Van Opstal 3, Villanueva 2, Gotladera 2, Vosotros 1, Webb 1, Tampus 0

Ateneo 61 – Salva 18, Ravena 10, Long 7, Monfort 7, Chua 7, Austria 6, Tiongson 4, Slaughter 2, Golla 0, Gonzaga 0, Sumalinog 0, Erram 0

Quarter scoring: 17-10, 36-31, 49-48, 66-61

    wow congrats dlsu

  • leolite says:

Congrats to the Green Archers. No buts. You gave your best. Your ANIMO pulled you through as always.

  • LA SALLE says:

    go la salle!!!!!!!!!!!

  • bakit ganun ang laro ng ateneo? it’s like they had lead tied to their legs.

not to take anything from the archers! congrats…and thank you for making us no. 1…haha…at least for the elimination round.

  • Escudo says:

DLSU will miss the services of Torres for sure. Bounce back sooner sir.

FEU will be a tough assignment for DLSU but so was ADMU.

    Animo La Salle.

    • xd says:

I read that Norbert will be out for two weeks. Once again DLSU beats ADMU in the pre-season does it mean that ADMU will owned DLSU this coming UAAP season?

BTW I’be liked to commend the inside game of DLSU. Finally their bigs are starting to shoot decently in the paint. The bigs are starting to post up and the guards finally have a play for the bigs.

Good job for that. I hope DLSU will do the same on their free throws.

      • Sam says:

I guess not. Hard to predict. While in the previous season, DLSU owned ADMU in the preseason then got owned by ADMU in the uaap season, I think the circumstances right now is quite different. Last time, I think DLSU didnt have enough experience in them, quite rebuilding last season (tho they improved and got into the qfs). This year, there is a good mix of players with good talent and some game experience from last uaap.

I am hoping DLSU plays to their potential come UAAP time so it will be an exciting season with so many talented teams. DLSU has a good back court and a quite formidable front court. Just a matter of them being consistent and hitting their free throws. And i think LA might be the big difference from the previous seasons.

        • Cracks in thy Armor says:

I want to hear 4Peat’s analysis on this one. ADMU is strongest on paper, yes? Paper Eagle, yes?

          • Red Cafe says:

            CITA,

Read Norman’s comment. It’s summer, our main focus is the UAAP.The typical excuse i hear from the blue side of not taking the pre-season seriously when they lose.

  • proud archer says:

Freethrows!! Freethrows!! Freethrows!! That will be crucial for the Archers especially when they face the teams like FEU, Ateneo, NU and AdU in UAAP!!!

  • leolite says:

secret to free throws: Muscle Memory, consistency in everything. Poise, handling of the ball, no abrupt dribbles. Slow down heart rate, relax, breathe, aim, release. when you are up to 75%, do it blindfolded. Do 40-50% blindfolded. You’ll be awesome. Believe me it can be done. Its a mental game. perfect execution should be your aim. Good luck!

  • oh well says:

nice halftime by the bbb oldies!:p

  • asd says:

nagpatalo ang admu para hindi nila makatapat ang NU kasi makakapag laro na dapat si mbe, labing isa eh

    • redone says:

      Anong nu sinasabi mo??!!!

    • red rampant says:

wow! updated ka ah. Spare yourself from humiliation. Aralin muna ang sitwasyon.

    • Anti-heat says:

So ok lang pala sa mga taga katipunan matalo sa mga taga Taft? Matalo na sa lahat wag lang sa DLSU and for us vice versa. It’s a rivalry for a reason, walang no bearing game when it comes to our teams

      • Mav says:

That’s very true AH, school pride is very important especially coming from these two rival schools. Congrats to the archers! It was an excellent game. :D

        Animo!
        ONE BIG FIGHT!!!

      • Tax says:

Yeah, and this game was a bit of a reminder that a. we need Greg to mature much faster than Rabeh and b. we need Ryan to fix his “injury” and play this season. There’s a hole in the offense right now and against a team like La Salle that just won’t do nicely. Happily, Black still has a month to prepare.

Btw, he records currently stand at 38-27 Ateneo or 34-31 La Salle, depending on your perspective.

        • Pat says:

          38-27/34-31 in favor of?

          • Tax says:

Ateneo 38-27, or La Salle 34-31, depending on whether you’re in favor or against the suspension, they wrote off wins for 2 years

          • Anti-heat says:

            @Tax

I’d rather take the 34-31 :D seeing as games and championships are “won on the court not on the board room”, but those who favor 38-27 then that’s up to them. BTW is this UAAP records only?

          • Tax says:

            @Anti-Heat

This counts from 1939. I know the numbers don’t seem to be a lot but we have to remember that the double elims, the final four, and the 3-game finals formats are more recent inventions. The 2 schools were also in 2 different leagues for a few years. We might need to get someone old enough to count from the 1920′s.

          • Anti-heat says:

            @Tax

What the newer tournaments like the Fil-Oil, PCCL and other tournaments outside the UAAP are they included in that record?

          • Tax says:

            @Anti-Heat

This is for NCAA/UAAP only. For CCL/PCC, I’m guessing it’s 1-0 for La Salle coz both schools never get into the same division.

  • kaplook says:

nagpapamalas ka ba ng kabob*han mo worrier?

  • red rampant says:

Congratulations to the Green Archers. Good game.

  • Stacked says:

    Has Nico Elorde graduated already?

    • JohnnyRockets says:

      heard he transferred to ateneo.

    • dakilangeagle says:

Apparently, he feels that he wouldn’t have a spot to shine in the DLSU lineup since they already have a good crop of guards, so he opted to take his basketball somewhere else: ADMU. Although, with keif, tallo, and tiongson around.. I wish him luck. =)

  • red guard says:

Congrats to the Green Archers.Thank you for the #1 seeding in Group A.

Funny how our Bigs seem to go down when they play the Blue Eagles, Sudan when the Red Lions played them and now Norbert.

    Animo La Salle!

  • RedBloodedBedan says:

Congrats! Two wins for the Animo’s!

  • SM Bay City Arena says:

    Ael Banal NU-BULLDOGS?.. True?

  • goste says:

are you serious? he’s really back at baste? i heard tallo is now a growling tiger

  • Anti-heat says:

Well that ticket was worth every penny. Thanks for the good game Atenians, another game added to the number 1 rivalry in the country. Congrats also to San Beda for winning their game I’m glad that the archers learned something from that mishap against the lions. Good luck to the teams who advanced to the next round

  • Rajon Rondo says:

Oo nga, bakit hindi naglalaro yung mga prized rookies ng Ateneo? Pessumal, Capacio, Tallo? :O

  • etwetrt says:

    kasi bai sila hahaa

  • grass-is-green says:

That victory sure felt good! This La Salle team is really promising. Daming talents. Feel bad about Nico Elorde leaving La Salle and going to Ateneo. I have seen the boy since his grade school-high school days at DLSZ. And its not easy moving to the other side. Good luck to Elorde.

    • Anti-heat says:

I wouldn’t they chose to play for Ateneo and I’m fine with that. It’s their decision so we have to accept it.

    • Sam says:

I dont think DLSU would. Most of DLSU fans I know have great respect for both the players you mentioned. It has always been said by some old alumni that it is the freedom of the player to choose where they want to play and DLSU wishes them the best because after all, they were Lasallians at some point in their lives. It’s just wrong to wish illness to someone who was once/will always be your Lasallian brother (no matter what the case is i think)

    • yosi says:

Depends. Alumni from DLSZ and his close college batchmates will likely cheer. Alumni from other high schools and those not belonging to his batch(especially freshmen) will likely jeer.

Just like Fortuna’s first game against DLSU. There were peeps in green cheering him when he scored or had the ball and others who were bewildered as to why? lol

      • DLSZ says:

I’m an alumnus of Zobel and all I could say is that Capacio and Elorde aren’t the only alumni from DLSZ who moved to Ateneo. And like the others, they will be supported by all La Sallians.

After college it’s the bond we built throughout our stay in zobel is what matters.

Great game Archers! But please improve on your FTs before UAAP!

        ANIMO!

        • yosi says:

Bro i’m also an alumnus of DLSZ and DLSU but not ALL Lasallians/ La Sallites will throw support to these young men when they play against us. You’ll also hear insults and jibes thrown at them when they start playing in the UAAP. Just visit the different forums online and you’ll already read a few mocking statements made by alumni or students about Nico and his transfer to the blue side .

I dont agree with it but such is life. Ika nga ganyan talaga ang buhay! lol

    Graduate na si Buenafe?

    • red rampant says:

Buenafe is back in San Sebastian

      • bubuchacha says:

        is this true? :(

      • drug pusher says:

how many playing years does he have?

      • Anti-heat says:

        @Red rampant

        How sure is this info?

        • What Everybody Said says:

I think this issue has more accuracy now than this first surfaced two years ago.

          • Escudo says:

            A-H, WES

There is an actual person who overheard the talk of Sebastians regarding Buenafe back paddling to SSCR after our game w Baste. He can shed light on that chat at the resto.

If Buenafe does go back, he will have to serve residency since he played in a Collegiate league. If he serves residency then the rule that will dictate his years in SSCR will be age limit, that will limit his playing years. Now the question is

Isn’t this something like Slaughter too, who played in a Visayan Collegiate League?

          • What Everybody Said says:

Yes, Escudo, almost exactly the same. I’m not sure with the playing years of Slaughter, all I know is he is only good for about 2 years. 3 being max. For Buenafe on the other hand, is there a rule that when you got cut due to academic deficiency from another school, you then transfer, would you be able to get in the league? Because if there’s no such rule, the purpose of having academic requirement would be defeated. Unless of course, the residency year would require an academic reach for buenafe.

          • Escudo says:

            WES,

It will depend on the “status” of Buenafe, if he was sent out as “Pass out” or totally kicked out as in with failing grades is another matter.

          • What Everybody Said says:

Agree, Sir Escudo. I guess we will just wait for the coming wks to see the development.

  • Micro says:

Sigurado sasabihin ng mga atenean hindi sineryoso ng mga players nila ang laro dahil preseason.

Dapat ang sagot ng mga taga taft, hindi naman nila sineseryoso ang UAAP.

  • tyrese pasu says:

I heard Vigil and Pate both left DLSU. Is this true? And which school did each transfer to? Thanks.

And oh, congrats to DLSU! Nice game for LA. Glad to see him back in shape and still as fast as ever

  • bubuchacha says:

ateneo lost to a well prepared dlsu team.

tanong lang ah. seryoso ba yung injury dun kay norbert guy?

  • Tax says:

Those 2 or 3 errors down the stretch completely cost us the game!

Oh well, congrats greenies you sure pulled the one up on us this time.

    • bubuchacha says:

mental lapses. very uncharacteristic of ateneo. sayang.

dlsu’s composure kept them in the game. admu parang inaantok the whole game.

    • Anti-heat says:

If Ateneo played their usual stingy defense, the one they used in the 3rd and 4th quarter the result might have been different, and you are right Ryan Buenafe would’ve made a difference especially in offense regardless of his fitness.

  • 4peat says:

The Blue Eagles did not win because they are so undisciplined.

They did nothing in Las Vegas but wine, dine, gamble; they just enjoyed themselves. They dug into those 2-inches steaks from breakfast to dinner; they had caviar for appetizers and drowned themselves on Bordeaux, Chateau Lafite. Then, instead of practicing their well-studied plays, they go to Caesar’s Palace to listen to Celine Dion, if not reminisce on the favorites of the older ones and listen to Paul Williams. Sometimes, they just lazily reflected on their basketball successes in the Wet Republic Ultra Pool….. all these and many more…

Frankly, these undisciplined team surprised me that they only lost by 5 points; they must have been unlucky.

  • egal says:

    On an incidental matter!

Congratulations to those responsible in bringing in the game!

This refers to the new set up, tickets were available early on, at other regular outlets(mas mahal nga lang); but, we avoided a long, suffocating, sweatingly hot line-up to the Arena box-office, like what we experienced during the AdMU v. NU game.

Thanks, Inbound for the dissemination and, the Barker, Rolly Manapat for the repeated announcement on the new and revised schedules, gametime of the earlier games. Even though- as my son lined-up, I saw a Bedista friend with his family(wife and kids) who said they came in at almost two o’clock only to find their game almost over, literally. And were informed they have to leave after their game ended some minutes later, surprised that their tickets is not good for the succeeding game. It seems that they were not the only ones, well, I tried to explain to them but well, you can’t please everyone.

  • mocking bird says:

bakit kaya si sara lang hindi pinasok ng game na to?

  • slaughter says:

    why does this always happen?
everytime there’s a preseason game, ateneo always loses to DLSU.
pero pag season proper naman, no match.

    • Sam says:

we’ll see if DLSU is indeed no match for ADMU this season in the UAAP. Too early to tell. DLSU might just be a totally different team from the DLSU team ADMUA faced a couple of seasons ago. I think they have enough talent to fare well in the UAAP.

    • bball fan says:

Last Year’ UAAP, La Salle also beat Ateneo in the 1st mtg. but they got back at La Salle in the second round. They never met in the final four

    • bubuchacha says:

  • mendiola_maneater says:

we won against mapua today, we’re now waiting for the winner of the FEU-DLSU game. hope DLSU wins so that we can get back at them, although i doubt it if they can get past FEU. last saturday’s loss was just a fluke and besides we’re just using this tourney as preparation for the uaap wars.

“sana naman manalo kami laban sa powerhouses ng UAAP. sa NU nga natalo kami ni hindi man lang naka final four sa UAAP last year ang mga bulldogs eh”

Did your alleged ADMU lose to NU? Or you haven’t made up your mind here whether your an Atenean or whatnot?

          Lets hear your story.

    • crimson fury says:

Yes, he’s right guys. ADMU is just using this tournament as a preparation for the UAAP, so it’s really okay to lose to DLSU because it is a no-bearing game.

      • crimson fury says:

        *it was

      • Anti-heat says:

Oh yes I’m sure it’s ok for Ateneans to lose to DLSU at any kind of competition. I’m sure it’s ok for them….. Yeah right. It’s the country’s most intense rivalry, it’s the most watched sports event in the country not involving Manny Pacquiao, you think both teams are coming in to lose?

      • sketch says:

what i don’t get is that he’s saying that DLSU’s victory was a fluke yet he’s also saying that they are only using this tourney as a preparation for the UAAP? sounds like an excuse to me. i mean, c’mon if they are really using this as a preparation for the upcoming UAAP season, which is but a few weeks from now, shouldn’t they take games like these seriously and quit slacking off, as well as polishing off the kinks? c’mon man, give credit where credit is due.

    • Anti-heat says:

Yeah sure it’s a fluke “Mr. Atenean”

  • Anti-heat says:

We lost to FEU 73-68. Painful 5 point production in the 2nd quarter cost us is this game. Not taking anything away from FEU, you guys played your part. Congrats to the Tams, Lions and the Eagles for making it into the next round. Any update on the Falcons-Stags game?

    • sketch says:

5pts? what happened? wasn’t able to catch the games today.

      • Anti-heat says:

DLSU was up 20-13 at the end of the 1st quarter, we got blasted by FEU in the 2nd and 3rd quarter but almost rallied again in the end but FEU did their part, can’t complain about that. San Beda destroys UP 97-68, while Ateneo defeated Mapua 63-56. Adamson is ahead of San Sebastian 46-35 at halftime.

        • sketch says:

Hey, it’s still only the preseason. There still the UAAP to look forward to. Maybe by then your guys will play better than they did in this tourney. Best of luck to your team!

          @Escudo

Not sure only getting feeds from a reliable source.

Adamson starting to blow out stags. 61-45 Falcons with 3:33 left to play in the 3rd. I’m sure guys like Escudo, Banned, Dennis and other San Beda alumni are smiling at those Stags who thought they were the team to beat in this tourney.

          • Escudo says:

Hehehe, yes you can bet we are smiling with the way things are turning out now in favor of the Falcons. Though we face them on Friday if they win.

            Go Falcons! Go Falcons!!!

Animo to DLSU for a great preseason, all the best to yo guys in the UAAP.

ADU is a huge challenge to us and match up will really be exciting. We have some unfinished business of sorts, right?!
