“MONSTER game for Sudan,” said the San Beda College Red Lions’ Head Coach Frankie Lim.
“We just hope that he plays like that every game.”
Second-year center, Sudan Daniel recorded his first NCAA career triple-double with 16 points, 10 rebounds and 10 blocks as his team dominated the University of Perpetual Help System Dalta Altas, 101-77 last Wednesday, July 28, 2010 at the Arena in San Juan City. It was the 5th straight win for the Red Lions in the 86th season of the NCAA.
Garvo Lanete ignited an early San Beda run in the first quarter by scoring 7 points. In the second quarter, rookie Jaypee Mendoza took over by scoring 11. By the end of the first half, the Mendiola five have built themselves a huge 20-point lead.
After a quiet first twenty minutes of play, Perpetual’s Jett Vidal came alive in the second half by hitting three, three-point baskets in the third quarter. He would go on to duplicate that feat in the final period, but San Beda’s defense and fastbreak attack more than negated his effort.
“I was afraid that they might come back. They put it low to 12 points and they just tried to stay close to us going into the fourth quarter. Na-prevent naman namin. At least my starters had a good rest,” said Lim.
All fifteen Red Lions saw action in the contest. San Beda’s bench was huge, outscoring the Altas’ starters 65-60. Former RP-Youth Under-18 National team member, Jaypee Mendoza led the Red Lions in scoring with 17 points.
“Very aggressive. He (Mendoza) was always a recipient to our fastbreak. Then we also had 30 assists. So, that means the ball is going around. We shared the ball. Unselfish kami, lumalabas. That’s nice to see,” said Lim.
With the victory, San Beda is not at the top of the team standings with a 5-0 win-loss card. Head Coach Frankie Lim was asked after the game if there was anything he would fear as his team goes along in the season.
“I’m afraid of injuries. If my players get hurt, you’ll never how long will it take them to recover and to be back in game shape. Most teams and most coaches will always be scared of injury,” revealed Lim.
The Altas are the only remaining team without a win as they have lost all their six games so far.
The NCAA games resume on Friday, July 30, 2010 at the Arena in San Juan City for what should be another very exciting afternoon of college hoops.
