Adamson University Falcons

2009 record: 5-9
Head coach: Leo Austria

Additions: Rodney Brondial, Allen Etrone, Austin Manyara, Ryan Monteclaro, Jeff Olalia, Jansen Rios, William Stinnett

Subtractions: Leo Canuday, Aldrin Margallo, Chesmar Lapitan, Raymond Peñalosa, Robert Ruiz, Cris Sandoval, Allan Santos

Holdovers: Lester Alvarez, Arnold Basilio, Roider Cabrera, Eric Camson, Jerick Cañada, Jan Colina, Michael Galinato, Janus Lozada, Alex Nuyles

Background: The Falcons were last season’s heartbreak kids, dropping two double-overtime games against DLSU and UE, bowing to UST by 1 point, and FEU by 3, all in the first round. That poor start took its toll down the stretch, and despite a 4-3 second round, Adamson finished 5-9, one game behind fourth-placer UST.

Key changes: Adamson lost seven players from Season 72, but of these seven, only Leo Canuday and Aldrin Margallo were in the regular rotation, giving coach Leo Austria a solid nucleus of nine returning players.

Among the new faces, forwards Austin Manyara from Kenya and Will Stinnett from Guam are expected to log heavy minutes. Jeff Olalia, a promising rookie back in Season 70, also returns to the squad after a two-year absence and should see some time at the three spot. Shooter Allen Etrone, younger brother of UE’s Gino, will also debut and provide shooting off the bench.

Outlook: Adamson’s big problem last year was closing out games. This season, with a veteran line-up and arguably the best point guard rotation in the league in Cañada and Alvarez, Austria is hoping such end-game implosions will be a thing of the past. Manyara and Stinnett are two exciting and talented players who will greatly shore up the front line, and look for Camson to build on his improved play from last year.

But Austria himself has anointed Alex Nuyles as the Falcons go-to guy this season, and I’d have to agree. If Nuyles can blossom into a big-time scorer and leader, Adamson will go places.

Prognosis: There is a bit more parity in the talent level of teams this season, and Adamson is actually in a really good spot: they’re well-coached, they have a veteran nucleus, and they have two foreign-bred big men who can make an immediate impact. Look for them to crash the Final Four for the first time in four years.

National University Bulldogs

2009 record: 3-11
Head coach: Eric Gonzales

Additions: Joseph Eriobu, Jul-Ashri Ignacio, Nico Javelona, Jeoffrey Javillonar, Glenn Khobuntin, Yvan Ludovice, Emmanuel Mbe

Subtractions: Kevin Batac, Denmark Cabaluna, Francis Donahue, Elmer Fabula, Bon Jovi Manito, Michael Luy, Ronald Roy

Holdovers: Mervin Baloran, Kokoy Hermosisima, Marion Magat, LJ Malanday, Jewel Ponferrada, Ajeet Singh, Joseph Terso, Jerome Tungcul

Background: Because they lost so many games by wide margins last season, it’s easy to forget that the Bulldogs actually started and ended Season 72 with impressive wins. On opening day, they thrashed the UP Maroons by 10 after leading by as much as 27. And for their final game, they stunned the DLSU Green Archers by 2. The problem was, in between, NU only won one game.

Key changes: Of the seven Season 72 players who will not be returning, only Michael Luy averaged more than 20 minutes per game. The five other averaged 10 or less minutes, so they really won’t be missed.

Besides, the seven who are coming in will easily log more minutes than their predecessors. Chief among them are Emmanuel Mbe, the hulking six-seven Cameroonian, Glenn Khobuntin, the former Letran Squire and NCAA juniors mythical five member, Yvan Ludovice, an ex-San Beda Red Cub and Jeoffrey Javillonar, an RP Youth Under-16 stalwart.

Outlook: This is a young and raw team. They have the pieces in place to be a contender in the years to come, but look for them to stumble a bit this season as they adjust to a new coach and to each other. But make no mistake; other teams can no longer chalk up a win against the Bulldogs. Despite their youth, I expect them to be competitive in every game, and may even pull off a couple of surprises.

Prognosis: NU has closed the talent gap to the point where they should improve on their 3-win output last season. They will make some noise and fight hard, but the lack of experience will take its toll in the long run. I see them bringing up the rear again, but they definitely won’t be your typical eighth placer. Best case they’ll finish sixth in a tight race.

University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons

2009 record: 3-11
Head coach: Aboy Castro

Additions: Vergel Evangelista, Jett Manuel, Martin Pascual, Joshua Saret, Michael Silungan

Subtractions: Kevin Astorga, Arvin Braganza, Migs de Asis, Michael Gamboa, Andrew Marfori

Holdovers: Woody Co, Moriah Gingerich, Carlo Gomez, Dionisio Hipolito, Mark Juruena, Mark Lopez, Francis Maniego, Alvin Padilla, Martin Reyes, Mikee Reyes, Magi Sison

Background: Last year, the Fighting Maroons (yes, that’s what they’re still officially called as of this writing, despite an ongoing move a move to change the university moniker), finished last with only three wins. They had a really crazy first round, tallying 37 turnovers in a loss against NU then upsetting defending champion Ateneo a few weeks later. They were a bit more competitive in the second round, but they really had problems with consistency and they just couldn’t take care of the ball.

Key changes: Arvin Braganza is the only starter not returning, and Aboy Castro has 11 holdovers from last year’s team. Beefing up the veterans will be Mike Silungan, the gifted scorer from Chicago who will challenge for the scoring title. To compensate for the loss of Braganza and point guard Mike Gamboa, Joshua Saret of JRU and Jett Manuel of Xavier were also brought in. A pair of rookie bigs, Vergel Evangelista from the Philippine College of Criminology and Martin Pascual from Ateneo High School, round up the recruits.

Outlook: UP has a deep rotation this season. Mark Lopez is a superb perimeter defender. Woody Co will be a top forward in the league this season. Silungan looks to be the real deal. Magi Sison played well in the Fil-Oil tournament. If Silungan lives up to the hype and Sison can continue his strong performance in the UAAP, then the Maroons will be decent shape to make a strong run.

The point guard position is still a bit iffy, though. Mikee Reyes was a little out of control last season and oftentimes looked for his own shot, and Saret is pretty much cut in the same mold. Reyes has to tone it down this year and play with more maturity.

Prognosis: I am about to write something I have never written before in my nine years as an online sportswriter: I think UP will make it to the Final Four this year.

(Sid hears the collective snicker and laughter of inboundpass readers who are now busy typing up comments questioning his sanity)

That’s right, I’m predicting UP will make it to the Final Four. They’re deep, they have veteran leadership, they have Silungan, and they will be facing a more level playing field. I know, the mere thought of it is too difficult to fathom. Even my fellow inboundpass columnists openly laughed at me when I told them UP would finish fourth. But I’m sticking to this prediction. It won’t be a slam dunk fourth place finish, and the stars will have to be aligned somewhat, but I do think it will happen.

Projected team standings

1. Far Eastern University

*snicker snicker* UP in the Final 4? End of the world na ba? hehe… just kidding! I also think UP is very competitive this season 73. I would have to lower my expectation though, having been let down by the Maroons (or whatever they would be called) a lot of times. Five wins this season and I would be satisfied, a trip to the final 4 and I would be ecstatic!

    • REDTUBE says:

malakas UP ngaun men..

      • ababababa says:

lalaro ba si manuel sa up? sa pbl lang ata un e..

        • Sid says:

The Manuel in the line-up is Jett Manuel from Xavier, not the PBL player Vic from PSBA.

          • marbel_19 says:

Guys, UP maroons always have a strong line up since the toti almeda days… I think every season they have a strong line up and the school is like a magnet in attracting high school standouts and priced player but still, they can’t break the 7 win barrier… The problem is not the players and the recruitment!!! I believe the problem is their program (coaching staff to be exact!)…

It seems they can’t share the ball well… They seem to have no discipline it setting plays and absolutely no trust with their teammates…

Sorry guys, but 5 wins is just pushing it!

          • REDTUBE says:

    • proudmaroon says:

Hey! Don’t underestimate our school. I really believe that we have a big chance for final 4 this season. Malakas line up ngayon. And I believe ng-mature na ung mga players. They know what they want and they want to be in the winning column this time.

      LET’S GO UP!!!!!!!!!!!!
      UP FIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • Anonymouse says:

Don’t get me wrong, I support UP no matter what. Our team this year is the strongest we’ve had for a loooonng time. Sinasabi ko lang na kahit 5 wins lang mapanalunan nila masaya na ako, but still I know they can do better… :P

        • sponklong says:

          • 3nigman says:

They got all the most important pieces para maka assemble ng malakas na team first and foremost yon recruitment wars di sila dehado dyan tpos alumni support di rin pahuhuli to.

      • francis says:

up 5 wins?! the end of the world na ba?! snap back to reality pease…I’m so sorry.. up 0 win and 14 losses..that’s the way it goes..it’s always that way..peace…

  • totoge says:

4th place is my best possible prediction for UP so I think the odds are they are finishing 6th. I’m from UP, though I never heard that we are changing monicker. So what are the possible replacement for fighting maroons.. Maroon oblation? Parrots?

  • totoge says:

    dapat pala fighting nationals

  • i guess sid venturA forgot kokoy hermosisima of NU as a returnee this season!

    • Sid says:

You’re right, I forgot to mention Kokoy in the list of NU holdovers. I’ll have it edited. Sorry about that.

  • Sid says:

A contest was held and the winner will be announced at the pep rally tomorrow, Monday. I have no idea what entries have been submitted. I also have no idea why they want to change the moniker in the first place.

  • Lebron to the Clippers says:

Will the Green Archers ride the “recruit an African” band wagon too? I will be shocked if they do.

    • Marbel_19 says:

      Excuse me!

I was talking about the Finals between FEU and DLSU where a coaching staff of DLSU calmly approached Arwind Santos then once Arwind has turned around to go to the dug out, the coaching staff punched Arwind at the back of the head then ran to the la salle’s dug out… I saw it completely because I was there, it was even caught on tape but unfortunately somebody blocked it at youtube!

I believe, that was the last year of Arwind at UAAP and after that year DLSU was suspended for a whole year from UAAP because the DLSU basketball program was caught fielding an illegible player…

Seems like you don’t know UAAP history, my friend!

    • DLRTviaTaft says:

  • wye says:

so who’s gonna do the preview for ust and lasalle?

  • maroon41 says:

lol! it will be apocalypse if you win this year’s UAAP, especially if your most dominant big man is Ferdinand!!! lol! wtf

  • Semaj Norbel says:

i agree with the predictions. adu and up at 3rd and 4th, respectively

  • ONE BIG BRIBE says:

    @ sid ventura
UE… WON’T MAKE IT? NAH, I BEG TO DISAGREE. IF I CAN RECALL MY FRESHMEN YEAR IN UE BACK IN 2005 IT IS SUCH RAW LINE UP COMPARED THIS YEAR, AND MOST DID FORSEE THAT UE WON’T MAKE IT TO THE FINAL FOUR BUT THEY DID.

PROBABLY LAST YEAR WAS A CHANCE FOR A CROWN (ALSO IN 2007), BUT UE’S RESILIENCE WILL NOT END THIS YEAR, AT LEAST NOT THIS YEAR.

BUT ANYWAY, WE ARE ALL ENTITLED WITH OUR OWN OPINION.

    • Sid says:

My fourth spot was a toss-up between UP and UE. I eventually decided on UP because they have a lot of veterans. Paul Lee is my bet for MVP, but I just think the loss of Espiritu, Llagas, Lingganay and Acuna might be a little too much. I remember that year you’re saying, I think it was 2004, the year after James Yap and Co. left. But UE still had Canaleta and Hubalde.

But again, you may be right in the end and Lee will be able to carry UE back to the Final Four.

      • coy says:

James Martinez is coming back and will carry the load with Paul Lee so they still have a big chance to snag 4th place.

        • REDTUBE says:

      • ONE BIG BRIBE says:

Yeah I know 2004, Cañaleta and Hubalde and a bunch of rookies. But I really mean 2005 lead by sophomores headed by Arellano and a bunch of rookies na yung iba eh gurang na kaya di na rin nakapglaro ng matagal sa UAAP…U

      • They (UP) have a lot of veterans, eh kung hindi nman nag-excel mejo tagilid tayo dun. Eh ang alam ko dami yata imports. Nway UE has small line up this season, really. But i dont have any doubt that they cant make to the final four. Although the key has gone i think James Martinez is also a player to watch for. I am hoping also na tutukan ni coach si Zamar kasi he has also the capacity as three pointer.

But again, ive been reading this site and i realized its hard to give predictions..:) Halos lahat kasi ng team mukhang kaabang abang. Basta gudlak na lang sa bwat teams.

        Battle of the East (FeuE)

  • ONE BIG BRIBE says:

and to add something, and i guess it’s all very obvious, unlike other leagues–as far as I know–UAAP has been very unpredictable, unlike other leagues out there, u did not include DLSU on the final four but I think they can even make it to the finals, though I hope my will win the crown, but that how it is in the UAAP…unpredictable…

  • REDTUBE says:

    My Final 4.
    1.FEU
    2.AdU
    3.ADMU
    4.UE

    T5.UP
    T5.DLSU
    T6.NU
    T6.UST

    • REDTUBE says:

      Mythical 5 candidate

      1.Paul Lee (UE)
      2.Alex Nuyles (AdU)
      3.Aldrech Ramos (FEU)
4.Woody Co or Jett Manuel (UP)
      5.JR Cawaling(FEU)

      • d17 says:

Are you saying that nobody from ADMU or DLSU will make it to the Mythical 5? ADMU has Salva and Salamat, while DLSU will rely on Webb. Hmmm…

        • GOGOL says:

        • Lebron to the Clippers says:

What about Riel Cervantes? I’m not from FEU, but I think this man has an ax to grind this season. Last year, after their loss to the Warriors, while singing their school hymn, he was crying and notices the camera guy was broadcasting him, then cut.

Just a thought, that maybe he has an ax to grind this year.

      • GOGOL says:

Malabo makapsok sa F5 si Cawaling at Nuyles.

Eric Salamat at Nico Salva yan.

    • wew ha says:

kinakalimutan nyo yta c rr garcia!

      • REDTUBE says:

  • muff says:

UE not in the Final 4? You might still be broken hearted Sid (me too) because I watched you predict that UE will win it last season in Finals. I remember you saying all the stars are lined up for UE and they should be champs if not for some intervention coming from(you know who) 20 point lead after four days 3 nights its gone? There must be something wrong. Anyway, UE is a team that has a lot of poise especially in crucial situations and I think it’s safer to put them in the F4 rather than teams who haven’t been there for a very very long time. In the UAAP, team poise really matters.

    • DLRTviaTaft says:

paano mo nasabi na meron Team Poise ang UE? eh sila nga ang pinakasikat na CHOKERS of the league. the only reason umaabot sila ng Final4 is on sheer individual talent of their players alone, pero pagdating ng crunchtime, uwian na yan. masasabi ko na si Paul Lee ang isa sa mga pinakamagaling na amateur players ngayon sa Pilipinas, pero di nya kakayanin buhatin ang UE mag-isa. at wag din umasa kay James Martinez. kaya lang yun nakakashoot dati kasi napapabayaan na libre dahil maraming ibang scoring options ang UE. ngayon na silang dalawa na lang ni Lee ang maasahan sigurado babantayan na ng siryoso yang si Martinez ..

  • POPOY POLOYAPOY says:

miss kona ang UAAP, sana naaalala nyo pa ako…

  • Tiger Power says:

wow…UST tied for 7th…i hope youre wrong.

  • Jaypee says:

Here’s the most feasible team standing after the eliminations:

    1. FEU 11 – 3 (lost to UE, Adamson, DLSU)
    2. UE 10 – 4 (Lost to FEU, ADMU, NU, UP)
    3. ADMU 8 – 6 (Lost to FEU 2X, DLSU, UE, Adamson, UST)
    4. UST 7 – 7 (Lost to UE 2x, FEU 2x, ADMU, UP,NU)
    5. UP 7 – 7 (Lost to UST, UE, FEU 2X, ADMU 2x)
    6. AdU
    7. DLSU
    8. NU

    Semis:

FEU in game 1 over UST
UE in game 2 over ADMU

    Finals:

    FEU in game 1
UE in game 2 and 3

    Battle of the EAST revival…….

    • GOGOL says:

feasible my ass. You are only basing it on team talent. No history, no coaching, no training no experience.

AT PAANO NAPATPAT SA SECOND SPOT UE?! wala nga kayo malaki ungas.

    • hazhazhazhaz says:

      LOL UST? are you serious?

    • d17 says:

Medyo malabo ang UE this year. Whether UE fans admit it or not, losing Espiritu, Llagas, Acuña and Lingganay is a really big blow to UE’s chances this year. Lee and Martinez are the only stars left in UE. Llagas and Espiritu were the ones holding the fort in the paint. Acuña was a lights-out shooter and Lingganay was a very steady guard. Lee is very talented, but he and Martinez cannot win it all by themselves. Hope and reality are two very different things.

I am an Atenean and I know that losing Rabeh, Nonoy and Jai are gonna be big losses to the team… although I hope we will win the three-peat this year, i really do think that we are weaker now than we were last year.

Let’s hope for the best for the teams that we cheer for, but let’s not set ourselves up for disappointment by having unrealistic expectations of them…

Go!! Fight!!! ADAMSON FALCONS!!!! NEVER SAY DIE!!!

  • ONE BIG BRIBE says:

UE champ this year? yeah I hope…

  • ONE BIG BRIBE says:

Sana this year walang ONE BIG BRIBE… To people who have power and a patriot of schools where they came from, don’t interfere, let the athletes play and let them make the best out of them.

Sana wala ng katulad nila Barroca which gave excuse to FEU’s failure last year and Pari Llagas of UE who scores double-double in almost every game even in the Game 1 and 2 tapos biglang no output sa Game 3.

Mas enjoy ang basketball pag walang mga ganyan controversy, no doubts and ifs.

  • Lenard says:

question : is uaap playing 10 mins. per qtr??

  • Littlemuch says:

aim UE not only in fourth place, but higher than that. be on the top.

  • Littlemuch says:

UE had 6’9 player. team b ata. its all about height in UE common guys. we have talented guards. lets go not only in 4th in 2nd spot but always on the top. the number 1 guys.

  • totoge says:

    My prediction.
    FEU – 11-3
    ADMU – 9-5
    Adu – 8-6
    UE – 7-7
    UP – 7-7
    DLSU – 5-9
    NU – 5-9
    UST – 4-10

Ang laki talaga nang nawala sa UST eh. 40pts a game din yun, half of their scoring.

    • totoge says:

UST is an enigma for me. Di naman sila naglaro ng preseason kaya di ko masabi if they have very good rookies. UP nga ata yung pinakaveteran in terms of uaap college xp.

  • Dragon Fly says:

Can anybody tell me where the following are now:
    Arvie Bringas
    Migs De Asis
    Mike Gamboa

Are they still with their original UAAP schools and will concentrate on their studies this season or have they already transferred to other schools?

Also, where the heck are Soc Rivera and Keith Agovida now?

    • Anonymouse says:

Migs De Asis & Mike Gamboa – quit the team to concentrate on their studies.

Arvie Bringas – kicked out of La Salle due to academics. Rumored to be in FEU with his brother.

Soc Rivera – Rumored to be in NU (?)

      Keith Agovida – Dunno really…

      • Dragon Fly says:

        Thanks.

Actually just read an Inquirer article where new coach Dindo Pumaren said that Arvie Bringas will be missing this season due to academics. The article also seems to imply that Bringas is still with DLSU and will concentrate on his studies this school year.

Another player missing for DLSU (for the second straight year) is point guard LA Revilla who is still not cleared by his doctors to play because of his diabetic condition.

I also read in a “rumor forum” that Rivera was supposed to play for UST this season if he did not leave school (again) while Agovida was a target of NU after his high school stint in Reedley (recommended by DLSU) did not pan out as desired by the DLSU people. I guess where they’ll play is where we see them on TV next…..

        • Sid says:

Hi Dragon Fly. Arvie is no longer enrolled in DLSU.

          • hazhazhazhaz says:

Is it true he’s off to Quiapo?

          • Dragon Fly says:

Thanks for the info, Mike. So, where exactly is Arvie now?

          • Dragon Fly says:

            Sorry. Sid pala not Mike.

          • Sid says:

They say he’s set to join his brother in Morayta, but I’m still confirming. If ever Season 75 pa siya makakalaro ulit.

Ah ok. Natanong ko pa tuloy si Mike, hehe. Thanks again for the info. If that is true then FEU remains formidable in the frontline in Season 74 even with the departure of Ramos and Cervantes…..and I assume big brother Mark will make sure that Arvie REALLY goes to school to STUDY AND PLAY BASKETBALL this time.

        • Dragon Fly says:

Ah teka. Season 75? So its true nga na when it is a UAAP to UAAP school transfer ah 2 years ang residency instead of just 1 year?

  • spark says:

I go with sid’s forecasts, especially for UP. UP has the most, if not one among the others, with the most number of holdovers coming into the season. If mike silungan holds up to the hype behind him, UP is a serious F4 contender. the loss of braganza and marfori, the two most reliable among UP’s losses in the roster, won’t be much of a problem with silungan and sarret. alvin padilla, carlo gomez and mikee reyes are expected to step up big time this season, while the veterans will be giving the much needed experience factor. they had a decent performance during the filoil tournament, and a 5-2 final output is something to be proud of. plus they had some time to train and gel together at the states. i think this is the make or break season for UP. i was thinking a better team standing this season than the previous would be good enough, but i’m recanting that idea. i think they’re poised, prepped, and powered enough to gun for an F4 appearance. hopefully, UP will not implode in the end and settle for something less than the top half of the standings. a finals appearance? anything is possible, but that remains to be seen and proven.
    Go UP!

    • Big Fish says:

      nice one Spark……… Go UP!!!

    • odi says:

Holdovers don’t translate to wins in the UAAP or in any league. 5-2 output against which teams?UAAP teams?I know they have beaten la salle which is not a big deal anymore.

      • Spark says:

the opposite of what I cited as factors for winning are just as much a factor for winning. it’s not necessarily the 5-2 output, but the experience of notching wins that boosts their morale for the upcoming series. and while holdovers don’t necessarily translate to wins, that they have the most number of guys familiar to each other helps them craft plays, strats and other stuff on the court better.

as how I ended my comment, all things remain to be seen yet.

  • semerad twins - pogi power says:

ano na yun bagong monicker ng UP?

  • pando says:

Games are not won on paper, it has been proven all the time kahit NBA, PBA or lalo na sa UAAP. Wag muna mag-ambisyon. Wala pa nga kayong naipapanalong games F4 n agad ang nasa isip. Ipanalo niyo muna 1st game nyo and we’ll what happens next. For all we know nagself-destruct na nmn ang mga falcons nyo.

  • kung san sumisikat ang araw says:

its like NJ NETS in NBA.. Lakas ng hope nila mkuha c LBJ.
Hope din ng ADu ds season.. I mean mas posible ung sa NETS kesa sa ambition nila!!wahehe

      may sense kb? useless

      • DLRTviaTaft says:

        thats for admu-green

      • darkARChibald says:

well its like dreaming of a team to have LBJ in their line up, same as going to the UAAP championship or F4.. I think thats the thought of what he said..But unfortunately NJ has a billionaire GM so having LBJ in their Line up is more possible bcos of the said financial resources..unlike ADu going to the championship or F4, i think he means impossible..think think think!!maybe u two are not reading the news.. hi kung san sumisikat!!!

  • kung san sumisikat ang araw says:

Intrams ng high School..fo sho they’ll win
