Ateneo ties PCCL Finals series behind Salva’s career game

WITH the Blue Eagles clicking on all cylinders and leading by 20 going into the final quarter of the game, FEU Head Coach Glen Capacio apparently raised the white flag and decided to fight again on another day.
The Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles took Game 2 of the Finals in the 2009 Philippine Collegiate Champions League with authority, 90-63 from the Far Eastern University Tamaraws last Thursday, December 11, 2009 at the Ynares Sports Center in Pasig City.
“I think we played much better defense today. I think that was really the key. Even though we were winning the majority of Game 1, we didn’t really play good defense the entire game. Today, we were more focused. That’s really the key. We’ve never really focused on our offense anyway. It’s really been our defense. I think the focus was much better today, by the players,†explained Ateneo Head Coach Norman Black after the game.
As a team, Ateneo had 44 rebounds, 11 more than FEU. They also forced the Tamaraws to turn the ball over 19 times leading the Katipunan squad to score 26 points coming off those turnovers. Although Coach Black was modest about his team’s offense, the Blue Eagles registered 21 assists and shot 51.4% from the field.
Another factor that the champion coach pointed out was the presence of defensive specialist, Nonoy Baclao.
“Noy Baclao didn’t practice with the Patriots (Philippine Patriots of the ABL) today so he had a lot more energy which helped us a great deal,†said Black.
However, when asked whether Baclao would play on Sunday, he was uncertain.
“That’s a big question mark. The Patriots also have a game in Brunei. Well, we’ll go with what we have. If he can play then, that’s great. If he can’t, then we’ll just show up with the players we have and try to win on Sunday,†answered Black.
Former UAAP MVP and Two-time UAAP Finals MVP, Rabeh Al-Hussaini has still yet to play for Ateneo this PCCL season.
“I’m not sure about that. I’m not sure. It doesn’t look like it right now. He has not practiced with us since the UAAP. So, I’m sure he has pretty much no idea what we’re doing now. He’s already learned the system of the National Team, of the Gilas team. So, I don’t know how effective he can be on Sunday. Maybe it’s because he has never practiced with us since the UAAP ended,†responded Coach Norman when asked whether Al-Hussiani would play in the final game of the PCCL.
Former San Beda Red Cub, Nico Salva had his best outing yet in an Ateneo uniform and it came at a very opportune time. With his team facing defeat, Salva scored 13 of his career-high 26 points in a decisive 2nd quarter run where Ateneo outscored FEU, 27-16 and led by 9 at halftime, 42-33. The third year forward made 10 out of 16 shots from the paint and perimeter and even converted a three-pointer in the fourth quarter. He also grabbed 8 rebounds.
“A career game for him. He had a great night. He’s one of the players that will be very prominent in our future in the UAAP. I’m happy for him too. He’s worked very, very hard and all of his hard work showed up tonight in this game. I hope he can duplicate it on Sunday,†said Coach Norman Black chuckling.
FEU key players RR Garcia, Aldrech Ramos and JR Cawaling were not fielded in a single minute the entire fourth quarter. Averaging 19.8 points per game coming into a championship clinching match, RR Garcia had a disappointing performance scoring just a measly 2 points only.
Ateneo’s biggest lead of the contest stood at 39 points, coming at the final 1:07 of the game. Former Ateneo Blue Eaglet, Tonino Gonzaga completed a three-point play to put the reigning back-to-back champions, Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles up, 90-61.
Ateneo de Manila University will be celebrating its Sesquicentennial or 150th anniversary on December 10, 2009. In light of this, there will be a grand celebration called the “Sesquicentennial One Big Night & Grand Alumni Homecoming†to be held on Saturday, December 12, 2009 at the Ateneo High School Covered Courts.
Coach Norman Black is aware that the final game of the PCCL will be played on the following day.
“We’ll it just means that we won’t be celebrating very much. We’ll just show up and give an appearance. But, we’ll probably just go home and get our rest afterwards. There will be no beer drinking or anything like that. That’s for sure. We have to make an appearance there. We’ll be there but, we won’t be celebrating. We’ll just try to make sure we’re rested for the game on Sunday,†said a focused Coach Norman Black.
Game 3 of the 2009 PCCL will take place on Sunday, December 13, 2009 at the Ynares Sports Center in Pasig City. This will be the final game to determine the one true National Champion of Philippine Collegiate Basketball.
The scores:
ADMU 90 – Salva 26, Salamat 20, Baclao 11, Sumalinog 8, Buenafe 6, Long 5, Reyes 5, Gonzaga 3, Chua 2, Austria 2, Monfort 2, Golla 0, Burke 0, De Chavez 0, Tiongson 0.
FEU 63 – Cawaling 18, Ramos 12, Cervantes 12, Sanga 8, Vinluan 4, Exciminiano 2, Knuttel 2, Manalo 2, Garcia 2, Noundou 1, Guerrero 0.
Quarter scoring: 15-17, 42-33, 69-49, 90-63.

Adamson will always be the doormat of the uaap. they will eventually replaced the bulldogs this coming season. the falcons(the blue chokers). this is the san marcelino version of the recto school. as for dlsu, well…..nothing much to expect from them next season. they hired a looser in coach dindo pumaren.

Grats Admu! Phenomenal indeed! Napuno ringside today ^^ and most spectators did not go home disappointed.
Good game Feu. No respect lost. Feu will be a good team next year. Kumpleto sila at mag ma-mature lang sila by next season. Ateneo will be hard pressed to make it a 3-peat next year. Kase wala na si Baclao at Reyes. Admittedly, nahirapan na ang Ateneo even with those 2 playing, and Jai was the PCCL MVP pa, so Ateneo will have to retool in the big man defense and pointguard positions. Mejo hilaw pa si Chua at Monfort, respectively, for the roles.
Let’s see what magic Coach Norman will weave this time. All she wrote for basketball this year. /sign off.

Go Ateneo!!
One Big Fight!!
But according to Mr. Ric Olivarez of the Bleacher’s Brew site, Ganito rin ang nangyari nuong 1989 when the Ateneo Blue Eagles won their first ever back to back. In 1987-88, the Blue Eagles won Back to Back championships and some tournaments, just like right now, Back to Black, Uni Games and now the PCCL.
But still, Go Ateneo!! One Big Fight!!

We are the Adamson Falcons
we are like the Ateneo Blue Eagles
we have the same color
we have the same monicker.
What an ass? these falcons knows to threaten their opponents but put them on the hardcourt zero.
These bunch of chokers are the stags of UAAP, puro yabang walang gawa that’s it.
If you are thinking about the previous season then you are wrong, the point is you have a stupid coaching staff blended with stupid big guys with butterfingers in jan Colina and Mike Galinato, c’mon all that wins last season is a fluke. you may be big but no talent at all.
If I were Fr. Rendon I will totally replace my coaching staff with Hector Calma at its helm assisted by Jing Ruiz (or whatever his name)
Anyway, Congratulations to the Ateneo De Manila Blue Eagles, wow 3 championship titles in 5 months that is excellence and efficeincy, winning 3 straight in a short period of time compare to other chokers in this thread.
My apologies if i can’t control this feelings but i really hate this bunch of chokers and posers in this thread, i know it is a free country that is why I am making the best out of it the way these chokers do.
Yep AdU will be a doormat in the UAAP League.

Oh shucks.
Collegiate Basketball season is now over, with the Blue Eagles just dominated.
This PCCL Tournament just showed UAAP’s might in the Philippine Collegiate Basketball World. UAAP is indeed the Country’s premier amateur basketball league, and nothing else.
Congrats Ateneo and FEU, you both represented the UAAP very well.

The PCCL’s Mythical selection was;
C – FEU’s Aldrech Ramos
PF – SBC’s Bambam Gamalinda
SF – Ateneo’s Eric Salamat
SG – FEU’s Ryan Roose Garcia
PG – Ateneo’s Jai Reyes.
I’m quite happy that the lone NCAA rep Bambam Gamalinda was there to receive his well deserved accomplishment. He received, if I’m not mistaken, P15,000.

True. Ramos and Garcia will pick up where Baclao and Jai ended their collegiate careers. And just like someone pointed out, that l987 Ateneo team had all the formula and materials like this present, but soon to be the past, roster except for the system. The system and program will be tested yet again IF the school can replace the impending losses of those 2 key personnel.

The bigger question is what now FEU?
Intact line up and all yet again falling short to an ateneo team that is not even half as strong as the UAAP 72 season.
I had a hunch when they made the big run at the end of the 3rd quarter behind the superb play of RR garcia but I was thinking he would rest the kid because as great as he is he will get tired.
But he still played him with Knuttel at the start of the 4th and when Knuttel committed the stupid sucker punch foul on Jai then he had no choice but to really keep him in.
Alas he was the one guarding Jai and the poor kid was just to tired running around the multiple back picks and top of the key screens to get Jai free and he did get free and what happend? The rest is history…
A dagger 3 to tie the game and a nifty pass to an open Sumalinog after leaving RR behind.
Great gameplan Coach and I think the barocca karma will now start to haunt you til the coming seasons.

bambam gamalinda mythical 5? so what? di naman niya nagawa iyan during the ncaa tournament.
palibhasa kasi di sineseryoso ng mga teams ang pccl, san beda lang ata ang seryoso sa liga na ito kaso di pa rin manalo kahit half hearted na iyung laro ng mga kalaban.
sabi nga ni jai reyes nung ininterview siya during halftime of their game against san beda “nothing special, this is just a usual game for us”
buti na lang di si bambam nainterview, bukod sa magbubuhat ng bangko eh kakatayin pa ang queen’s language…
