FEU steals Game 1 of the PCCL Finals away from Ateneo

IN the first skirmish to determine the one true national champion of collegiate basketball, the resiliency and the perseverance of Far Eastern University propelled them to succeed against the favored Ateneo de Manila.
The Tamaraws defeated the Blue Eagles in a come from behind 75-70 victory in Game 1 of the Finals in the 2009 Philippine Collegiate Champions League at the Ynares Sports Center in Pasig City last December 9, 2009.
Ateneo came out firing with 9 first quarter points coming from confident 5th year point guard, Jai Reyes. He knocked down 3 out of 5 three points baskets in that opening salvo to contribute to Ateneo’s 12 point lead at the end of the first ten minutes of play. ‘Jai-namite’ would go on to finish the game with 18 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists.
However, in the second quarter, FEU outrebounded Ateneo 16-5, 7 of them coming from the offensive end. The Morayta squad eventually managed to tie the ballgame three times in the quarter, yet they were still unable to take the lead. Paul Sanga scored 7 of his 15 points at this phase of the contest to trim the Ateneo lead to just two points, 39-37 going into halftime.
The supporting audience of both teams witnessed some scary moments in the third quarter. At the 8:30 mark of the quarter, Chris Sumalinog apparently came down awkwardly on his left knee while pulling down a rebound. He fell on the floor clutching the knee and the game had to be stopped momentarily. But, after being attended to by some Ateneo physicians, Sumalinog stood up and was able to walk back to the bench using his own legs. Ateneo supporters clapped for the surprise package of the Blue Eagles this PCCL campaign. He was able to return to action later on in the quarter. The 4th year forward has been averaging 10.6 points per game in this year’s PCCL.
For FEU, things were worse on their end as starting center Riel Cervantes sprained his right ankle at the 7:10 mark of the third quarter and had to be carried off to the bench. Cervantes exited the game with 14 points and 4 rebounds. He did not return for action.
“Natapilok. Doubtful starter siguro siya sa susunod na game,” said Coach Glen Capacio.
RR Garcia once again played a magnificent game finishing with a game-high 22 points. He also grabbed 8 boards and dished out 5 assists. His defining moment of the game came in the final 3 minutes and 12 seconds when the Zamboanga native drilled in a three-point basket to give FEU its first lead of the match, 67-64.
Coach Norman Black immediately called a timeout and set up a play for Jai Reyes who responded with a trey of his own to knot the game up again at 67. After Cameroonian recruit, Pippo Noundou converted two free-throws to regain the lead. Nonoy Baclao missed a lay-up on the other end and on the ensuing play, FEU Rookie sensation, RR Garcia hit a big three-point basket from the left wing with 2:05 left in regulation to give the Tamaraws adequate separation to close out the game.
UAAP MVP Rabeh Al-Hussaini did not suit up in the game to focus on his participation with the Smart Gilas National Developmental Team.
FEU Head Coach Glen Capacio realizes the loss Ateneo has to make up for by playing without their star center this PCCL campaign.
“Ang nawawala sa kanila yung 20 points and 10 rebounds. So, yan ang malaking bagay. Pero, nag-step up din yung big men nila eh. Kasi itong team na to sabi ko, kahit sinong mawala, malalim yung bench. Nandun yung disciplina. Sabi ko, may sistema. Hindi nagbabago. So, sana yung team ko, makita ko nga na ganun din sa kanila. Sana, sana lang. Ilang months pa naman bago mag UAAP. Improve lang kami ng mag-improve,” said coach Glen Capacio after the game.
A familiar face has been spotted on the FEU bench this PCCL season. According to Head Coach Glen Capacio, former pro player and three-point extraordinaire, Ritchie Ticzon joined the FEU Tamaraws as an assistant coach at the start of this PCCL season. He has been helping out the team in skills development and game preparation.
“Malaking tulong. Malaking tulong,” said Coach Glen about the newest member of the Tamaraw’s coaching staff.
Game 2 of the PCCL Finals is set for today, Thursday at 3:30 P.M., December 10, 2009 at the Ynares Sports Center in Pasig City.
“Sana, sana hindi magbago yung intensity ng mga bata kasi kahit we’re down, nandoon pa rin yung tiyaga ng mga bata. Sana tuloy-tuloy. Maganda itong character na nakikita ko sa kanila. Nag-mamature na sila, yun nga yung lagi kong sinasabi. After three years, ngayon ko nakikita yung dapat ko makita. Pero natutuwa ako, natutuwa ako. Syempre, one game pa lang yan. Hindi pa champion. So, we need one more. Pero, alam naman natin yung heart of a champion so, hindi ka pwede mag-relax. Anytime, babalik yan, Ateneo. Alam naman natin sila kung gaano kagaling maglaro. Mahirap. Mahirap silang kalaban kasi, disciplinado. Defense at offense, walang mga lapses halos yung team nila so, ang masasabi ko lang happy ako sa pagka-panalo. Sa mga bata natutuwa ako. Lalong lalo na si RR. Nag-step up,” added the former pro player.
“Kung sino ang mentally prepared dito sa finals na to, yun ang mananalo. Alam naman natin na babalik at babalik ang Ateneo. So, dapat kung gaano kami ka-focused ngayon, doblehin pa namin. Doblehin pa namin bukas. Doblehin pa namin yung effort na ginawa namin ngayon,” Coach Glen Capacio said in finality.
In the first game, the San Beda College Red Lions took home third place as they defeated the San Sebastian College-Recoletos Golden Stags, 91-85 the Battle for Third. JR Tecson played his final game for the Red Lions and led them in scoring with 19 points. Team Captain Bambam Gamalinda also finished his final call of duty for the Mendiola outfit scoring 18 points and grabbing 6 rebounds.

No doubt that FEU deserved the win yesterday, but the way Ateneo played intrigues me. A bit too relaxed and calm even though the game was slipping away from them already. Looks like the Tams pushed on the Wake Up Call button for the Blue Eagles!
Hope it won’t be a fairy tale end for FEU this year, defeating the NCAA Champs, defeating the UAAP Champs and being champions in Philippine Collegiate Basketball after all.
OBF!
no doubt that baste is a fluke without the referee’s help.
@proud_knight no doubt that baste is a fluke without the referee’s help. –> TRUE ENOUGH
Baclao missed several layups and undergoal stabs, some without even hitting the board or the ring. Strange game for him! Hope he can make up for it today.
And it’s also crazy how the Baste tandem can suddenly lose their shooting touch after a great game vs San Beda. Coach Black even urged Salamat to take the 3pt shot when he was free which Salamat didn’t — showing no confidence in his own outside shot, all of a sudden. Weird!
Ahahahahahahahahaha!
Damn. Garcia is the man! He reminds me of Pong Escobal.
@Deep Blue
Well, shit happens.
@blue chip, proud_knight & LAC
no doubt that baste is a fluke without the referee’s help. –> TRUE ENOUGH—> I agree hehe
*wow ha…malamang kayo yung mga pinaiyak ng baste nung NCAA kaya bitter padin kayo…nakakapag celebrate lang kayo pag natatalo baste…

kahit ano pa man sabihin nla. tapos n eh,champion n ng ncaa season 85 eh. tska ung pccl ngyn wala dpat ikahiya ang baste nkta nyo nman cgro laro ng baste vs feu. breaks of the game lng. kung d nwla ung composure ni pascual at ni pamboy sa end game,eh d nasa finals nman sana baste. ung pagkatalo s beda khpon ok lng un. mas klngan ng beda ung panalong un eh. para d nman nkakahiya sa parte nla. ASAHAN NYO NAGBALIK N ULET ANG STAGS BASKETBALL. LIFE_____???
Stags really played dirty.Good thing RL has a BIG HEART, that’s why they won.Be hungry to win but remain humble.Yun ang wala sa Stags they lack the attitude, and sad to say they truly lack breeding.

@the stag’s principle
Give credit where credit is due.

If anyone believes that the PCCL determines the one true national champion of collegiate basketball is out of touch with reality.
The teams don’t value this tournament like they value the NCAA and UAAP tournament. This is merely just one of the 1st tournaments the teams can use for the UAAP/ NCAA wars of the following year.
The PCCL’s schedule does not take into account the commitments of the best collegiate players of the country to the national team. How can this be considered the premier tournament when the schools are unable to include the country’s best players into the team.
One can see with the kind of attendance and coverage being given to this tournament that this tournament pales in comparison to the UAAP and NCAA wars.
If ever, this tournament only reinforces that fact that the best college basketball is played in the UAAP since the league has monopolized the championship since its inception.
It is during the UAAP season where the best effort is given by UAAP teams. The sweetest victory and the most bitter defeat is felt during these games.
One does not feel than during the PCCL as far as UAAP and NCAA teams are concerned.
@belboy
“the teams don’t value this tournament like they value NCAA and UAAP tournament”
that’s your opinion
Like what i’ve said before, What belongs to us, belongs to us..
We have not even started to claim it yet.
One thing obvious however, University Belt Basketball is tops in the country.
At nkabawi nga cla in a battle for 3rd nga lang. 1997 last time n nagkta cla s finals talo beda s baste at nkamit ng baste ang historic 5peat. at cno nagpahinto ng 3peat ng red cubs at ginawa pang 4peat ng staglet. ngyn cno nagpahinto ng 3peat ng beda??? cno dn pla ang nagbreak lng longest winning streak s collegiate basketball d2??? @suki…..
But they were vindicated with the physical game Stags gave them……they just WON…
I remember one player of Ateneo was also slapped by a player of UP on the last UAAP. Ano ang sabi ni coach Norman “don’t get back at him, show it in your game”. And indeed Ateneo won.Ganoon po lang ang laro.Especially when these kids who play are with breeding and good guidance by their school and their family.
Ahahahahahahahahaha!
@SUKI
Wow! Are you a teacher, historian or a professor?
Could you tell me or us more about your errr… “history”?

Hope PBL website are updated.
Ahahahahahaha!
greetings!
to those who keep on making remarks about foreign players playing in the NCAA or UAAP…
note this!
why did they choose FEU, Ateneo, De La Salle, or San Beda?!
hmmm… come to think of it?! if i were an aspiring athlete from another part of this globe, which educational institution would i prefer?!
@Berdugo
Plain and simple answer to your inquiry.
The main reason why these foreign aspiring athletes have chosen such school is the fact that they cannot pass the screening exam at U.P.
Anything else you’d like to add?
Matatapang
Matatalino
Walang takot kahit kanino
Yan kaming taga-UP

Yes I know, that’s why I included the “franchise” (like Oracle) after the Harbour Center on my comment.
Thanks.

Ahahahahahahahaha!
Ahahahahahahahahaha!
BERDUGO! How are you Amigo?
Ahahahahahahaha!

Ahahahahahahahaha!
@pretty_laika
Errr… I think your (plain and simple) answer is way apart from BERDUGOs comment…
Hmmm… . .
Ahahahahahahahaha!
Ahahahahahahahaha!
Me? Simonsmug?
You got it all wrong.
Keep on guessing and detecting.
Uhm… Are you petrified with my presence?
You seemed irritated.
Why? can’t accept the RED LIONS won over the tasty Stags?
Ahahahahahaha!
One thing I’m so proud of our athletes at Diliman, you can never question their intellect.
Just to clarify my statement, I’m not saying that the athletes of other schools either in the UAAP or NCAA are brainless. lol!
Nice day to everyone.
