WITH less than five seconds left in the fourth quarter, RR Garcia drove towards the left side of the basket and took a running jumper to win the game. He misfired. Moments later, he took the same shot and made it to win the game in overtime.
The Far Eastern University Tamaraws emerged victorious in an overtime thriller last December 7, 2009 at the Ynares Sports Center in Pasig City. They defeated the NCAA champions, San Sebastian College-Recoletos Golden Stags, 86-83 in overtime to advance to the 2009 Philippine Collegiate Champions League Finals.
FEU rookie RR Garcia had a fantastic game scoring 28 points, grabbing 5 rebounds, dishing out 6 assists and stealing the ball 6 times. His clutch play was pivotal for the Tamaraws in this do-or-die contest.
In overtime, RR Garcia and Jimbo Aquino engaged each other in a shootout with Garcia hitting his first triple in overtime, a step-back trey with exactly 4:00 left over the outstretched hand of Raymond Maconocido. But, Jimbo Aquino calmly answered with a three-point basket of his own 21 seconds later. On FEU’s next possession, RR Garcia connected again from long-distance to extend the lead to four, 78-74. A Riel Cervantes free-throw put the Tamaraws up by a point but Aquino drained another three to cut the lead to two.
San Sebastian eventually took their first lead in the extra session, 83-82 after they forced an FEU turnover that led to a Ronald Pascual fastbreak layup. But, that would be the Golden Stags’ final basket of the game. With FEU down by 1 after that basket, Coach Glen Capacio called a timeout. Coming off that timeout, RR Garcia once again drove towards the left side of the basket and took the same running jumper he took towards the end of regulation. But, this time, the witty rookie was able to bank the shot in over Calvin Abueva’s help defense to reclaim the lead for good.
A botched play by San Sebastain led to a loose ball that was picked up by Jimbo Aquino about 15 feet from the hoop. Jimbo quickly took the jumper but his shot came up short. In the succeeding play, RR Garcia chased down an FEU miss and was intentionally fouled.
After Garcia made the first free throw, the referees called a double lane violation that forced a jumpball between Ian Sangalang and Aldrech Ramos. A poor toss by the referee confused Sangalang and Ramos as they jumped in the air but the latter managed to tap it to an FEU teammate to secure the win after Pamboy Raymundo gave up his fifth foul. Raymundo graduated from the game with 12 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists.
Earlier in the match, at 4:46 mark in the second quarter, Pamboy Raymundo was issued a technical foul after he stepped in front of Paul Sanga who had swiped his face while Raymundo was going up for a shot.
The stage is set for the best-of-three PCCL Finals on Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at the Ynares Sports Center in Pasig City as the Far Eastern University Tamaraws go up against the Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles who defeated the San Beda College Red Lions in the second game. San Sebastian will face San Beda in the battle for third.
In the main game, once again, the Blue Eagles continued to exhibit their consistency in winning basketball games by returning to the Philippine Collegiate League Finals for the third straight year.
Ateneo de Manila University ended the inspired run of the San Beda College Red Lions last Monday, December 7, 2009, by winning 81-69 at the Ynares Sports Center in Pasig City. The Red Lions have been playing undermanned without Jay-R Taganas and Borgie Hermida who have not played a single game this PCCL campaign. Taganas sat out the tournament to rest his head after injuring it in a game against Arellano University while Borgie Hermida underwent yet another knee surgery after the NCAA season. Sudan Daniel injured his foot after executing a dunk in San Beda’s PCCL game against Lyceum College. For the Ateneo side, Rabeh Al-Hussaini has not suited up at all in three of the Blue Eagles PCCL games.
The Red Lions started the game strong and outrebounded the Eagles 16-7 in the first quarter. Ateneo responded in the second quarter by outscoring the Red Lions, 27-16. Jai Reyes knocked down three three-point baskets in that crucial period to turn the tables in favor of the Blue and White. San Beda and Ateneo would both score 19 each in the third period.
In the final quarter, Chris Sumalinog led an aggressive Ateneo attack and finished the game with 14 points and 7 rebounds. Jai Reyes finished with 14 as well knocking down 4 triples and two free-throws. Eric Salamat contributed 14 points of his own.
The 2009 PCCL best-of-three Finals will take place on Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at the Ynares Sports Center in Pasig City. Ateneo will take on Far Eastern University who defeated the NCAA Champion San Sebastian Stags in overtime 86-83. The Stags will take on San Beda in the Battle For Third to be held on Wednesday as well.

Go Ateneo! One Big Fight! Oh, and first! :D
Opinion ko lang, hah.
The game between the Ateneo Blue Eagles and the San Beda Red Lions sort of reminded me of a classic game between the San Beda Red Lions and the Letran Knights, only it was Ateneo who was San Beda and San Beda was Letran.
To be specific, they played like real rivalries should.
With pride, emotion, close even though it was a mismatch (the Red Lions are depleted), plus some participation of some fans.
But Ateneo was playing straight up and focused, while San Beda played Letran dirty, you know, physical plays, rough fouls, tikitak fouls and they were caught, rightfully so.
And the Bedans even have the nerve to complain, just like the Letran Knights.
And the Ateneo Blue Eagles played through it, just like what the Red Lions has been doing with Letran for the past NCAA seasons.
Again, Opinion ko lang hah
it was a great 1st game bet. FEU and SSC.. it should’ve been the PCCL finals match-up.!! :Þ
stags = fluke.. whehehehe.. di kinaya ang bayad ninyo sa mga refs this time around.. baka sa game ninyo for third gumana.. bwahahaha salamat ref!
Another “All UAAP” Finals in the PCCL
@ Animo_LS,
I kinda agree.
Ganda talaga nung game between the two “Sungays”, hehehe.
oo Naman.
^HAHAHAHA. Right. He’s so pikon!
But what happened to Pamboy Raymundoooooooooo brought out the best of him, we cant argue with that.
ganda sana nung ginawang alley-oop dunk ni ronald pascual kanina…reminiscent of elmer espiritu hehe… sayang lng di nanalo yung mga team nila, but they could be an asset in the pros
GO FEU!! i believe kayo na magcha-champion sa PCCL ngayon!! di rin biro yung mga laban natin sa UE and Baste, dumaan tlaga sa butas ng karayom… & i think that’s enough morale-booster na para matalo ang Ateneo hahaha!!
now’s the time to reclaim the crown that was rightfully ours.. haha! GO FEU!!!!
THE BIGGER AND BETTER ADAMSON FALCONS…
COMING SOON…
Congrats eagles!
RLs, Bawi na lang next time!
Go San Beda Fight!!!
Hhmmmmmm……aws! OK! Congrats to the winner!
go ateneo!!!
one big fight!!!
Congrats to FEU! Nice game still for the San Sebastian Stags! Lets beat the Lions for third place!
BRAVO BASTE!
Once again, The UAAP showed that they are head and shoulders above the NCAA, or even maybe head and leg.
ang feeling naman nung mga ncaa teams, kung uaap teams agad ang na-match up sa mga iyan eh malamang all uaap final four sana.
ateneo didn’t even break a sweat against san beda and baste managed to keep things close due to many questionable calls.
@ Feelingero,
Meaning an NCAA school beat a UAAP school.
Ahahahahahahaha!
You can see the frustrations of the team (SBC) esp Bam-bam Gamalinda and Anjo Caram during the game yesterday. I can only say to myself: “If only Daniel, Hermida, Tirona and Taganas was there”.
Coach Lim couldn’t react for more as if he knew the outcome.
Sad but true, the Lions were tamed. We lost.
Congrats Blue Eagles and Tamaraws. Good job.
Good game.
Oh well, a game is a game. a fight is a fight.
Stags couldn’t reach the Climax!
Eagles indeed the King of Birds!
Tamaraws indeed are the Horniest!
Ahahahahahahahaha!
ANIMO!
La Salle kasi yun, kaya natalo ng Letran. Eh kung UE o FEU yun, kahit nga ata Adamson, talo Letran nun.
wow ha LA SALLE LANG???
I’m a basketball fan at nakikita ko maglaro ang UAAP at NCAA…
deserving yung final4 match-ups ngaun..
@rhk111
“Another “All UAAP†Finals in the PCCL”
good job uaap teams!
Ahahahahahaha!
@Moderator
Well said. Agree.
When is the Nike Summer League?
@Anton Roxas, SBC went up against SSCR Cavite not lyceum, it was ADMU who went fought lyceum. a small blemish in a otherwise cool piece of writing. to the editor, pls do a better job of prf readng.
at last… for the first time i can see quality comments on this thread…
CONGRATS to all the teams that had made this PCCL Season an interesting competition.
Good Luck to the remaining teams competing for top three honors…
GO TAMARAWS FIGHT!
TANONG KO LANG BAKIT ANG PAPANGIT NG MGA PLAYERS NG FEU MAPA BASKETBALL AT VOLLEYBALL? HINDI KATULAD NG ATENEO, DE LA SALLE AT UE.
EH GANUN TALAGA WALANG CLASS EH.
@feelingero
@TANONG LANG
@SAGOT KO DIYAN
@OH YAN..
I personally think that the Ateneo Blue Eagles will lose this series. I hope they lose too, para naman hindi lagi Ateneo manalo. Ateneo na lang ba palagi? Sure, the UAAP is better than the NCAA, but the UAAP is a “One Team Dominated League”, na ang pangit sa pandinig.
Joshua Webb is glowing!!

@Red Rampant
I agree, it’s like San Beda three seasons ago, or like in the NBA where the Bulls seems to be unbeaten when Jordan was there, I agree to your opinion at least it will provide balance.
sa totoo lang ang ganda ng officiating ng feu vs baste the best for this season. hahaha!
Ahahahahahahahaha!
Lions vs Stags
With the undermanned SBC squad?…
I dunno, the SSC-R squads are still intact. But the Red Lions made it to the final four??
Hmmmm….
Ahahahahahaha!
ANIMO!
@hellboy
I’m not from the NCAA nor UAAP but I’m a basketball fan ever since, but I think the stags are for real this year conquering you in the finals with your RL having the luxury of a complete line up. And besides battling it for 3rd? c’mon it seems you have just seen basketball yesterday. Why is’t you guys always make excuses…
peace!
@HELLBOY
Hahaha, so what if the Stags are intact and the red lions are not and you still managed to made it to the final four? What are you trying to say? Hahaha c’mon dude, 2-0 dumping your team in the finals this year is a proof! Hahaha stop making excuses! Hahahha
BRAVO!!!
wooooooooooooooohooooooooooo!
pareho kayong panis!!!
Nakakamiss si TONY ATAYDE!
Oh no!
Jimbo Aquino might end his San Sebastian Stags career on a very sad note!
Losing against a team they beat for the Last Season’s Championship!
Patay….
Oh wait, I could be wrong….
No, I’m right. San Beda wins the 2nd runner trophy of the 2009 PCCL.
FINAL:
