LESSONS were learned well this past season.
The University of the East Red Warriors used their superior experience to defeat the University of Cebu Webmasters, 105-86 in Philippine Collegiate Champions League Sweet 16 action last November 28, 2009 at The Arena in San Juan City.
An automatic qualifier to the 2009 Philippine Collegiate Champions League, the Red Warriors made their presence felt by being the first team so far to score over 100 points in the Sweet 16 this year.
“Siguro mas lamang kami dahil galing kami sa UAAP at maganda and mga naging laban namin doon. Yung mga tinalo namin sa UAAP hindi biro. 10-4 kami sa Eliminations, twice-to-beat yung FEU, best-of-three kami sa Finals versus Ateneo,” revealed UE assistant coach Rene Baena, who filled in for head coach Lawrence Chongson as UE’s inspirational first year head coach was in Malaysia. The Red Warriors were also without Rudy Lingganay and Toto Bandaying, who are playing for the Kuala Lumpur Dragons in the ongoing ASEAN Basketball League, as well as Lucas Tagarda, who suffered an accidental knee injury while warming up in Game 3 of the UAAP Finals.
“Sabi ni coach Lawrence, we need to win this game so that we will be able to play FEU again. Pero alam din ng FEU yan. They are probably aching to get back at us. It will be a good matchup,” added Baena.
FEU already advanced to the Elite Eight of the tournament by defeating Arellano University 69-59 last Monday. This victory by UE sets them up against the team that they beat in the Final Four two games in a row to advance to the UAAP Season 72 Finals.
UAAP Mythical Five member Paul Lee turned The Arena into his own personal playground with an amazing triple-double performance, garnering 31 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists. He was perfect from the line knocking down 10 free-throws, had three steals and zero minutes of rest.
