DE LA SALLE University’s title defense ended at the very first hurdle.

Colegio de San Juan de Letran banked on the explosive shooting of second year forward Jaypee Belencion to upend the Green Archers, 83-72 during the continuation of Philippine Collegiate Champions League Sweet 16 hostilities at the Ynares Sports Arena last November 25 in Pasig City.

Belencion buried a PCCL-record 10 triples and tallied 36 points to lead the undermanned Knights past the 2008 champions. The Iloilo native joined hands with fifth year veteran Reymar Gutilban and rookie Kevin Alas to offset the absence of stalwarts RJ Jazul, Rey Guevarra and Kirk del Rosario, among others.

DLSU, which bulldozed its way into the Sweet 16 by sweeping the Naga City Zonals in style, failed to capitalize on the early miscues committed by Letran and groped for form along the way. In fact, the Taft five shot a miserable 28 percent from the field in the first half.

Belencion, who averaged just a shade under six points in the recently concluded NCAA tourney, then waxed hot by registering 25 markers in the second half to tow the Muralla outfit to the Elite Eight for the second consecutive year. Joshua Webb, DLSU’s leading scorer in its disappointing UAAP Season 72 campaign, led his squad with 18 points, 15 of which came in the first half.

Meanwhile, reigning, back-to-back UAAP champion and 2008 PCCL runner-up Ateneo de Manila University relied on a torrid third quarter run to upend Inter-Scholastic Athletic Association champions Lyceum of the Philippines University, 73-63. Nico Salva led the Blue Eagles with 17 points. Despite the absence of 2008 UAAP Most Valuable Player and 2009 Finals MVP Rabeh Al-Hussaini, the Blue and White managed to erect leads as large as 27 points before Lyceum, behind the hot shooting of 2009 ISAA MVP Joseph Abaya, trimmed the lead to a more respectable one. Abaya fired in a team-high 16 markers for coach Bonnie Tan’s troops.

The scores:

Letran 83 – Belencion 36, Gutilban 15, K. Alas, 12, Cortes 10, Taplah 3, Foronda 3, Malabago 2, Ang 2, Pantin 0, J. Alas 0.

  • Galahad says:

no jazul no guevarra no del rosario? no problem. is belencion the new go to guy? i’ve always contended that belencion should be let loose. hopefully we’ll see more of this all the way to bext year’s ncaa.

did louie alas coach the boys?

  • MJ says:

Congrats to Letran! It looks like the Green Archers were not DLSU anymore. It looks like its other team like NU or UP. What is happening to the Green and White? Good thing their rookies and sophomores are workhorse than their veterans like Mallabes that sucks! Go La Salle!

  • bagtitako says:

DLSU needs a roster upgrade ASAP because their current players are not cut for the coming UAAP wars and they might miss the F4 again. Webb is excellent on both ends of the floor but he cant do it alone and he is also TO prone and he had several in a key run that would have brought them back in the game.

@lawrence andrew cabrera – Why you hatin homie’? yeah dlsu is a better school but its not about who’s better.. its all about winning the game! letran was a better team yesterday. you lost man.. accept it! Dont be a sore loser.. you cant win em’ all..

Just a few thoughts while watching the game:

    1. Franz Pumaren played his last NCAA game in 1980 against Letran. Barring a coaching comeback, he coached his last La Salle game versus Letran also.
    2. Franz Pumaren is the only La Salle player in 1980 who was still active and played in La Salle’s inaugural UAAP season in 1986.
    3. Like wise, Ateneo’s Ogie Narvasa (and some of his teammates who I can’t recall – please inform if you know) also played for both the NCAA and the UAAP for the same university.
UP in both the NCAA and UAAP in the 1930s
    5. I know there are also other players who played both in the NCAA and UAAP but not for one university exclusively. Right now, it is only Jenkins Mesina of UP and SBC who is on my mind. Any others? Senior’s competition only. Eric Salamat’s and Paul Lee’s stint as junior players in the NCAA and as senior players in the UAAP do not count.

  • i.love.superbryan says:

galing galing ni belencion..36 points tapos 10 treys pa…ayos..congrats letran :)

  • massive says:

@lawrence andrew cabrera: yuck k ng yuck d mu tanggap pagkatalo ng la salle?

  • shimmering lakes says:

robert agner played for the blue eagles then for the knights

  • fordmo47 says:

    @shimmering lakes:

Tahnks for the info.

  • Direktor says:

    @fordmo47,

Right, Franz P. was on that 1980 NCAA Green Archer team along with Jong Uichico & Alfie Almario. They were in a three-way race for the top spot with Letran, who was led by Itoy Esquerra and San Beda who were led by Elmer Reyes, Mike Advani and Joey Loyzaga. That season was aborted after that infamous LETRAN-LA SALLE brawl at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum. Probably hardly anyone remembers that a collegiate tournament was played outside of the NCAA later that season (but without Letran). I think it was called the Metro Manila Basketball Championships (please, someone correct me if I am wrong). Pundits then dubbed it the tourney to see who was the best NCAA team that season. Ultimately, Franz, Uichico, Almario, & Tonichi Yturri of De La Salle and the San Beda Red Lions – with Reyes, Advani, Loyzaga & Louie Brill – squared off for the championship, with the Red Lions beating the Green Archers for the title, as SBC duplicated their NCAA feat over DLSU just two seasons prior.

Franz’s situation is really unique, since La Salle had to wait for a few years before gaining UAAP admission. On the other hand, Ogie Narvasa and the rest of the Ateneo Blue Eagles immediately played in the UAAP in the season right after leaving the NCAA prior – that closed-door championship loss to San Beda.

Yes, there are only a handful of players who played for both the NCAA and the UAAP for the SAME school.

Now, there may be more players who played both in the NCAA and UAAP, even if not for one school only. Outside of Mesina (UP/SBC), Alvin Padilla comes to my mind. Padilla was a 3rd string 2-guard on the Red Lions 2007 title team, but moved to UP and played this year in the UAAP. Johnedel Cardel of La Salle was a former benchwarmer on those star-studded San Sebastian team of the late 80s, before transferring to DLSU and made himself a star in the UAAP.

By the way, hindi ba si Ambrosio Padilla yung naglaro for UP in both the NCAA and UAAP in the ’30s?

Interesting thought as to which team Sen.Webb will root for..

  • fordmo47 says:

    @Direktor:

Televised iyon. Panalo La salle convincingly kasi naroon na si William Pearson, one of the first Filipinos along with Ricardo Brown to play for a US NCAA Division 1 team (University of Hawaii Chaminade?).

  • noliboy_dc says:

i think ren ren ritualo suited up for a year for the REd Lions before transferring to DLSU.

  • noliboy_dc says:

i think ren ren ritualo suited up for a year for the REd Lions before transferring to DLSU. then there’s mark borboran who played for the Heavy Bombers before transferring to UE. Jerome villanueva played with arwind santos in the UAAP before transferring to San Beda.

  • math01 says:

Nice info “Direktor”. Congratulations to the Knights! Belencion was a revelation indeed.

  • Tax says:

  • i.love.superbryan says:

@to the fore at eighty four

bader malabes is no longer part of the dlsu green archers..he’s gone back to bahrain to play there

  • 99 BEDAN says:

Ren Ren Ritualo never played for the Red Lions though he played for the Red Cubs. He left San Beda, for De La Salle, at the same time as Jenkins Mesina (UP) but Jenkins came back to San Beda a year after.

  • REDTUBE says:

    Back to Black, to Back!!

  • Galactic Alignment says:

Wow, Ateneo only scored 8 points in the 4rth quarter. And still, enough to merit the win.

So far, it is only San Beda who disrespects the PCCL by participating in their practice uniforms. Hopefully, and respectfully, they wear their regular uniforms.

  • Hellboy says:

    Ahahahahahaha!

    Wow! And now the uniform?

    Disrespect?

    Ahahahahahaha!

    ANIMO!

  • LAncelot says:

I have to agree with GA, disrespectful ang Red Lions when they showed up, and played in their practice jerseys. They just showed that this tournament is just small time, when in fact it is prestigious.
But hopefully, the NCAA runner ups will don their real uniforms next time, because they have a tough battle ahead of them.
Its either the UV Green Lancers or the Mapua Cardinals.

  • Mel says:

    @Direktor

Never nag-aral si Ambrosio Padilla sa UP.

  • Hellboy says:

    Ahahahahahahahaha!

    Errr, ok. . .

    Ahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

  • spider_fan says:

The Lyceum Pirates uniform is not a desirable one. Its ugly. I have to rank it as the worst jersey I have ever seen. But at least they wore it when the battled the UAAP Champions Blue Eagles.

  • Galactic Alignment says:

    Zechs Merquise,
The game was televised, mind you. And your precious Red Lions won by 41 points, not 31. And being televised, means public exposure.

  • Galactic Alignment says:

Excited ako sa UV Mapua game. I believe that the Cardinals will beat the Green Lancers.

  • Hopia says:

the only thing disrespectful and disgraceful in the sbc-sscr cavite game is that the cavitenos did not play on par with the red lions. i thought they’re champions in naascu.

  • Hellboy says:

    Ahahahahahahaha!

    @Hopia

I think for the guys who reacted on the “Lions uniform/jersey” are the guys who were disrespected.

    Hmmmm…

Say, I’d like to wear “practice jersey” later.

    Hope no one’s disrespected (whispering).

    Ahahahahahahaha!

    ANIMO! ROARRRRRRR!!!

  • REDTUBE says:
