THE Far Eastern University Tamaraws just simply had the right materials to stop the fighting Arellano University Chiefs.

With their win last Monday, November 23, 2009, the Tamaraws advanced to the Elite Eight of the 2009 Philippine Collegiate Champions League. The final score was 69-59 at the end of forty minutes of play inside the Ynares Sports Center in Pasig City.

FEU opened their Sweet 16 campaign with a strong opening quarter. It was beginning to look like an easy win for the Morayta-five until Coach Junji Ablan decided to unleash their patented full-court press with about 3:21 remaining in the second quarter. With the help of their defensive formula, Arellano outscored FEU in that quarter 20-12 to get within striking distance.

Coach Glenn Capacio was unhappy with his team’s performance in the first half.

“After halftime pinagalitan ko. So, maganda naman ang naging resulta ng second half. Dumepensa kami,” revealed Coach Glen Capacio after the game.

But, the Tamaraws still had to work hard to keep the Chiefs away. Arellano, who did not lead at any point in the contest, actually came within a point at 35-34 with 7:32 left in the third quarter. Rodrigo Apostol was fouled in the act of shooting and went to the line for a chance to tie the game or take the lead. However, he painfully missed both free throws and his team’s momentum altogether.

From there, FEU unleashed a crucial 10-0 run with 8 points coming from talented rookie RR Garcia. He finished with a team-high 17 points. Aldrech Ramos used his length and athleticism to contribute 15 points, 7 rebounds and two blocks.

The Tamaraws now await the winner of the UE Red Warriors and University of Cebu Webmasters duel which will be played on Saturday, November 28, 2009 at The Arena in San Juan City.

“Tuloy-tuloy na itong game na ito kasi halos lahat ng teams dito malalakas na. Hindi kami pwedeng mag-relax katulad ng ginawa namin nung first half. Di pwede. Kailangan trabaho dapat,” said Capacio.

NCAA Mythical Five member and All-Star Gio Ciriacruz played his final game for the Arellano University Chiefs. He finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds – A respectable double-double performance to close out his college basketball career.

The scores:

FEU 69 – Garcia 17, Ramos 15, Noundou 10, Sanga 8, Cervantes 8, Exciminiano 4, Knuttel 4, Cawaling 3, Guerrero 0, Vinluan 0.
