DEFENDING champion De La Salle University took the last Philippine Collegiate Champions League Sweet 16 slot in convincing fashion by sweeping the South Luzon-Metro Manila zonal last November 14-16 at the University of Nueva Caceres Gym in Naga City, Camarines Sur.

The Green Archers, who played sans Kish Co, Bader Malabes and James Mangahas, booked their title defense ticket by an average winning margin of 39 points. On Day 1, the Green and White dismantled NCAA South back-to-back titlists Don Bosco Technical College Greywolves, 98-44 before narrowly escaping UCLAA champions St. Francis of Assisi College System Doves, 52-42. On the last playdate, DLSU cruised past Bicolandia powerhouse University of Nueva Caceres Greyhounds, 91-38.

Joshua Webb led the UAAP sixth-placers with a 14.5 point per game clip, but missed out on the second matchup against the Doves. Peejay Barua, who suited up in all three games, averaged a decent 13 points. St. Francis, meanwhile, sported a 2-1 record, with DBTC’s lone victory coming at the expense of the winless Greyhounds.

The PCCL knockout round, which kicks off at the Ynares Gym in Pasig City on November 23, will feature six NCAA teams, five UAAP squads, three CESAFI schools, one NAASCU outfit and either an ISAA representative in Lyceum of the Philippines University-Manila or a second NAASCU unit in University of Manila.

Inboundpass.com has learned that Lyceum-Manila, the ISAA champion, has yet to secure itself a slot in the knockout round despite earlier reports. As of presstime, the PCCL is still reviewing the Lyceum and UM situations, and has yet to decide on the matter. While UM defeated Lyceum-Manila, 77-74 in a do-or-die game for a Sweet 16 ticket, the game was reviewed due to a techincality brought up by Lyceum-Manila. The PCCL is expected to make an announcement as to which of the two protagonists will advance to the tournament proper.

Among the neophytes in this stage of the tournament, since being reformatted in 2007, are defending NCAA champion San Sebastian College-Recoletos and University of Cebu.

Every game from the round of 16 to the best-of-three championship series will be broadcast live on Studio 23.

Ateneo a while ago look really sluggish. Luckily, they build enough lead to escape with a win.

Grabeh, sayang naman pinaghirapan ng Green Archers. Byahe out of Luzon, beating opponents by an average of 39 pts. Pero lalamutakin lang ni Jaypee Belencion and the Letran Knights.
Oh well, the Knights did deserve the win, so Congrats Knights.
