I’d like to postpone my initial commitment and rather feature a team that has maintained its stature among the UAAP elite in the last 28 years at the same time commemorate the Franz Pumaren era and his contributions to Collegiate Basketball.

De La Salle Green Archers – Four straight Championships (1998-2001)

Season 61

After 4 straight 2nd place finishes behind the UST Growling Tigers, Allen Patrimonio, Dino Aldeguer, Dominic Uy, Don Allado and Ren-Ren Ritualo under the Coach Franz Pumaren, they made sure that the 5th  time will no longer haunt them.

Without winning a single game in the elimination round against UST, La Salle managed to squeak past UST with 56-51 victory in the Final Four even with that dramatic, chopper ridden entrance by Growling Tigers Head Coach Aric del Rosario towards the Big Dome.   De La Salle defeated an FEU line up composed of Ronald Magtulis, Celino Cruz, Richard de la Rosa,  Marc Stevens Victoria and Jerome Chaneco, in two games, 63-59 to capture the Season 62 title.  Don Allado has been named MVP of the tournament.

Season 62

After slapping UST, 84-79, to take the top spot of the semi-final round, the De La Salle Green Archers will face the FEU Tamaraws.  While the UST Growling Tigers will take on the Ateneo Blue Eagles to complete the final four cast.  La Salle finished the elimination round with a 11-3 record.

With an 11-3 slate to finish the elimination round, the Green Archers defeated the Tamaraws, 91-69  en route to another finals berth against UST with a line up that includes  Marvin Ortiguerra, Derick Hubalde, Angelo Velasco, Nino Gelig, and Cyrus Baguio.

After losing game 1, De La Salle won the 2nd game, 81-74 in a fever pitched match at the PhilSports Arena.  Then Mon Jose, Dino Aldeguer, Allado, BJ Manalo, and Ren Ren Titualo gave De La Salle another championship with a, 78-75 overtime victory over UST.  Don Alldao was again named MVP of the season.

Season 63

With Don Allado and Dino Aldeguer in their final year of eligibility, Ren-Ren Ritualo and BJ Manalo will lead a rookie class that includes Mike Cortez, Janon Bunye, and Mika Vainio to capture their 3rd Straight title with a 74-65 victory in Game 2 over the FEU Tamaraws.

Season 64

Determined to ge that 4th Straight crown for De La Salle, Coach Franz Pumaren led a power house team that includes Mike Cortez, Rookie Mark Cardona, Joseph Yeo, BJ Manalo , Erick Arejola and Ren-Ren Ritualo.

The Green Archers, who booked their finals appearance by defeating NU, 111-85, will face Richard Alvarez, Larry Fonacier, Paolo Bugia, LA Tenorio, Magnum Membrere, Enrico Villanueva and the rest of the Ateneo Blue Eagles coached by Joe Lipa, in the championship round.

The Green Archers went on to win their 4th Straight Title with a 93-88 in a winner-take-all encounter.  Mike Cortez and Carlo Sharma led the team in scoring with 23-points and 22-points respectively for De La Salle.

no one can beat the 4-peat Championship made by the UST Golden Tigers in 1993-1996, led by Dennis Espino, Bal David, Edmund Reyes, Rey Evangelista, Patrick Fran, Gerard Francisco, Siot Tanquincen, Udoy Belmonte, Richard Yee, Dale Singson and Cris Cantonjos… they were all Pinoy line-up, no Fil-Ams nor Am-boys pero they were a dominating team the fact na grabe ang competition nila sa la salle nun with bunch of amboys like the lago brothers…

    — the greatest group of players ever played in the UAAP Final 4 era…

  • bowtoblue says:

wait till novemeber 2011 and then we’ll talk. but if you want to talk basketball greatness, how about 19 mens 25 juniors and 2 womens for a grand total of 46 bball championships. im sure lasalle only has around half of that.

  • Seniors Talaga says:

    @Raijin

eh papaano hindi mag-cha-champion iyung mga ust teams na iyun eh ang tatanda na ng mga player. espino, reyes, evangelista, belmonte and fran played for 6 years in college (5 as undergraduates and 1 year as masteral students). ust kaya nagpauso nung masteral students eh pinapalaro pa din.

  • coretoxic_23 says:

Hi Mike! Interesting article. Just a few corrections:

“After 4 straight 2nd place finishes behind the UST Growling Tigers, Allen Patrimonio, Dino Aldeguer, Dominic Uy, Don Allado and Ren-Ren Ritualo under the Coach Franz Pumaren, they made sure that the 5th time will no longer haunt them…”
… the Archers placed second behind the Tigers only THREE straight times (1994,1995,1996). In 1997, (season 60), they placed second behind FEU. The TAMARAWS were champs in 1997. La Salle was coached by Jong Uichico. Franz Pumaren took over in 1998, when they won the first of their four titles crossing over into the new millenium. Of course, in 1993, there was no second place team, since UST was automatic champion after the elimination round.

“a rookie class that includes Mike Cortez, Janon Bunye, Michael Casino…”
… I’ll BET that this guy Michael Casino you’re referring to is really Michael GAVINO.

“Rookie Mark Cardona, Joseph Yeo, Jerwin Gaco…”
…FALCONS_INSIDER got it right. Gaco was not on the Archer team that won Season 64. He was a rookie for La Salle only in SEASON 66, where he joined hands with fellow rookies JV Casio, OJ Cua, Ryan Arana, PJ Walsham, and legendary Archers Tim Gatchalian and Mark Benitez in securing a very lofty 4th place.

“Without winning a single game in the elimination round, La Salle managed to squeak past UST with 56-51 victory in the Final Four even with that dramatic, chopper ridden entrance…”
… eh? I dont get this sentence. Does this mean that La Salle didnt win a single game in the eliminations?

    OBF!

Hey everybody, take a look at this.

Members of San Miguel’s 1989 Grand Slam team in the PBA threw a congratulatory dinner for teammate Ato Agustin who piloted the San Sebastian Stags to the 2009 NCAA Seniors Men’s Crown. The dinner held at the Kamayan sa EDSA featured: Tonichi Yturri, Elmer Reyes, Bobby Jose, Alvin Teng, Samboy Lim, Hector Calma, Franz Pumaren, and Agustin. Paul Alvarez later joined San Miguel but not as a part of the 1989 Grand Slam team.

Thanks for the comment and inputs. I just want the college basketball fans to realize that Franz Pumaren must be remembered for what he has done for La Salle and I agree with the Green Mind for his Hard Ball comments that even those anti-Franz should respect what he has done for De La Salle.

wala na bang maisulat na iba ang author dito, reminiscing past glories? who the hell cares about those dynasties? what is important and relevant is now and the upcoming season.TGM is way better than you even if he has those moronic views.

  • salbaje says:

    Palkonz,

Napakaboring.

  • Hopia says:

    @ palkonz

this is what we get when our national b-ball teams collect zero glory internationally.

  • bagitong bagot says:

Teka bakit nagagalit yata yung Bluer than Blue? They never won for playing fair daw, siguro Adamson yung blue. Not fair nga naman. At bakit naman tawag sa Adamson e Ateneo de San Marcelino? Kasi wala naman yatang Ateneo de Manila, nasa Quezon City sila di ba? Kaya siguro Ateneo ang gaya-gaya, hala na. Champion pa nga ba talaga ang La Salle? Yung La Salle de Manila?

  • Linus Pauling says:

Nanung asan nya? Ala siguro abe, baka adobong gilagid ng Hudyo, ala Goehring. If he were a brown Nazi daw would he eliminate Pinoys, of course he would, he could be a brown Indonesian Nazi after all! The same way Hitler eliminated Germans because he was Austrian. Germans? German Jews are Germans too, silly. Kala mo purong Pinoy kung magsalita, Labensarum my ass. Your ideology is as twisted as its swastika

  • ano daw? says:

These poor young kids so enamored by Nazi ideology probably have one eye shut to the truth of the Holocaust. The genocide unparalleled in history. Pinoy Nazi, do yourself a favor, read all the books and watch all the video you can grab on this topic and see that history will always be right in judging your ideology – and so will God be. If you come from a Christian background, read your Bible and find out why the Jews can never be eliminated by any superpower, certainly not by your watered-down version of Nazism. Your thinking might be faddish, deluded. You could bee consuming too many Neo-Nazi films, books or music. Re-engineer your thoughts and don’t be gullible man. You have one full decent Godly life still ahead of you.

  • bombero says:

  • The Mysterious Eagle Man says:

I’m from Ateneo and I must say, this is how I rank the UAAP Dynasties and repeat-champs that I’ve followed:

(the years indicated herein are the years they won.)

    1) The 1993-1996 UST. If you were watching the UAAP during these years, UST was just simply phenomenal. They dominated the league in ways that no other team ever did and has. La Salle came close several times. In fact, they were so dominant in 93 that the UAAP was forced to switch to the Final Four format the season after.

    2) 1998-2001 La Salle- The Franz Pumaren era was really DLSU’s strongest years. The Mean Green Machine steamrolled over the UAAP opposition like no one’s business.

    3) 1987/1988 Ateneo- Some say of Danny Francisco had played on, they would have won a third crown. Francisco’s game owned Limpot every time they matched up during this era.

    4) 1989-1990 Jun Limpot couldn’t answer an interview to save his life but he, Pumaren, Noli Locsin, Johnedel, Cardel, Mariano, Lago and Eddie V were practically a pro team at this point in time.

    5) 2008/2009 Ateneo The 2008 team wasn’t expected to do much but Rabeh Al Husseini suddenly went from bench player to monster and the rest is history. There really was no other big man in the UAAP who could stand up to him. As good as Rico Maierhoffer, he’s a wing player and he’s the closest match.

    6) 1991/1992 FEU Controversial to say the least but Johnny Abarrientos, Vic Pablo, Arnold Padaong, Nestor Echano and crew were a joy to watch on the open court. The controversy keeps them from going up the ladder though.

  • Galactic Alignment says:

    The Mysterious Eagle Man,
How about the Arwind Santos led 2002 – 2005 FEU Tamaraws? That team had it all. Talent, maturity (by 05, Arwind was already 25 years old) and desire.

  • Getting Real says:

    Mr. Abasolo,

I used to love reading your website. I have to admit that the first column I would read would be that of The Green Mind. He may have been an asshole, offensive and bias, but his column was fun. It was what college basketball was all about.

You also hace to admire the jerk for writing 1 to 2 columns a week which is something you 4 that are left don’t do at all.

I would go to his column just to read the comments andit was really fun. Now inboundpass is really boring.

I hated TGM with a passion but now, in all sincerity I miss the fun that his column brought to this site.

  • Getting Real says:

One more thing Mr. Abasolo, TGM had more readersa nd comments in 1 week than all of you combined in the months that your articles are posted. Wgat does that tell you? How many hits have you lost?

  • tang says:

    go, de la SUCKS!!!

  • pretender says:

    @magpanggap,

150 years na kamo ang ateneo but lately your school has become known for producing corrupt government officials and businessmen. sana tumigil na kayo after jose rizal.

  • whatsfordinner says:

    @ pretender

Jose Rizal? That short statured womanizing atenista?
    OO nga, amin din yun.

Even dlsu’s 2 top political bets are propped up by ateneans, their campaign… run by ateneans (that ran Cory, Erap’s and the last administration local campaign)
3 presidential candidates are ateneans, you forget that too?

Leave the politics outta here, it’s about basketball.

  • Cupid says:

    @ magpanggap

  • isyot says:

Yes, Erap was an atenean. But what’s worse, the CHED
secretary during his administration was no less than
Bro. Andrew Gonzales, former president of DLSU and
considered a pillar in the growth of the instituion.
Imagine, the ex-president of DLSU reporting to a
    drop-out from Ateneo! Nakakahiya!

  • charlie says:
