NCAA squad upends UAAP in benefit all-star game

EVEN with a much smaller and younger lineup, the underdogs still had what it takes to call themselves superior over the powerhouse.
The NCAA seniors All-stars spelled doom, 76-60 over the favored UAAP seniors All-stars in the 2009 Bantay-Bata 163 Benefit Games last November 14 at the FIloil Flying V Arena.
Cushioned by an 8-0 run by the UAAP All-star in the opening tip, the NCAA All-star, bannered by the core of the San Sebastian Stags plus NCAA MVP John Wilson forced a 20-all deadlock after ten minutes of action. A 10-0 run early in the 2nd period gave the NCAA Senior All-Star their first taste of the lead at the 7:57 mark. The UAAP All-star selection made it within 4, 41-37 early in the third period.
The biggest lead for the NCAA All-Star stood at 19, 71-52. The tag team of 2009 NCAA MVP John Wilson, who is rumored to be skipping his final year with JRU and Finals MVP Jimbo Aquino, who was sizzling hot from the outside paved the way for the NCAA All-Star to deliberately play with supremacy in their “homecourt†for the past 5 months. The top 2 leading scorers in the recently concluded NCAA Season 85 combined for 31 points and ten boards to lift their squad past the UAAP All-Star bannered by Reil Cervantes and Rabeh Al-Hussaini who led the scoring with 9 and 8 respectively with a combined seven boards. RP Developmental Team member Dylan Ababou was a non-factor with a single-digit production of 7 points with Rabeh Al-Hussaini tallying five turnovers. Seldom-Used Dave Najorda of San Sebastian highlighted the third period for the NCAA All-Star scoring 6 of his 8 points in that pullaway quarter.
Coach Ato Agustin, rookie Coach of the San Sebastian Stags said,“We wanted this win para ma-earn naming yung respect ng tao, para kahit saang liga kami mapunta, they’ll give us credit where credit is due. Although medyo hindi kasing taas ng tingin nila sa UAAP ang sa amin (NCAA), we were able to show and prove that with a powerhouse lineup, we can convincingly win. “
Earlier, the NCAA All-Star selection swooshed to an 85-84 victory over the UAAP selection with Arthur Dela Cruz named as the 2009 Bantay Bata All Star Juniors Most Valuable Player. UST’s Allein Maliksi was named as this year’s Slam Dunk champion garnering a total of 46 points for his 180-degrees reverse dunk. 2009 NCAA Most Valuable Player John Wilson ran away with 19 points in the three-point shootout for the distinction of this year’s three-point shootout champion besting UPHSD’s Robin Rono who came in second with 16 points. In the Father and Son two-three ball, Joel Banal paired with his son Ael Banal playing for the Ateneo Blue Eaglets brought home the bacon for a final tally of 70 points.

Seniors: Damn! NCAA proved it all this year. Even without the San Beda and JRU squads, they’re hot!
Aquino and Wilson, they’re indeed the killers. UAAP esp. the fans can only sit and watch how their side collapsed.
Oh well, it’s just a game for them. But the PCCL is the much awaited.

You can’t gauge the strength of a league with an exhibition game. I would suggest a revision of the PCCL to something like the old National Seniors Championship. with apologies to the provincial colleges but let’s just do a cross round robin between the Final Fours of UAAP and NCAA and then do best of 3 title series for the top 2 teams.
Or better still, just do a best of 3 between the UAAP and NCAA champions to settle the issue!

I get your point. But I think giving other (provincial) schools a shot would be more interesting. You and I might be surprised if they make it to the top.
One (team) has to prove as the “Best”. After all, It’s a National Championship.

When it comes to exhibition games, I can’t understand at the end of the game, sasabihin ng winning coach na para maearn ang respect, kung sino ba talaga ang mas magaling and so on. Kasi 2 sides of the coins, we all know that 6 member of the UAAP schools belongs to the Old NCAA then at the turn of the tide, biglang nagkaroon ng so-called “league rivalry” dahil sa mga pinagsasabi ni Fr Sacho at Candido Bartolome noong mga early stagings ng UAAP when in fact sila din naman ang nagform ng NCAA during the 1920′s. Can they just play for the benefit of those people in need? Ang dami naman nagpopost dito, akala nila kesho laging napapansin ang UAAP, hindi na magaling ang NCAA when in fact, both leagues have different styles of playing in particular the schools per se. Vis-a-vis with NCAA, kesho parang laging nasa attention ng mga tao sa UAAP, parang nakikita nila na mas kawawa sila. That’s not the point here, these two proud leagues made their way to the top. At kung ano man ung mga positions nila ngayon sa collegiate basketball scene, it’s what they sow and reap throughout its years. And guys ung mga nagpopost dito ng wa naman sasabihing matino and encourage other people to comment ng masama sa both leagues, please have a life.
I have to agree with The Glory that was NCAA, the Grandeur that was UAAP.
And people please, remember last year’s PCCL Final Four?
The best NCAA teams tried their darn hardest yet none made the Championship round. I have to say, last year’s PCCL was just painful. San Beda and Letran, battling for 3rd, while Ateneo and DLSU playing for all the marbles.

Malabo yan pre. Wala na sina Elmer Espiritu, Val Acuña, Toto Bandaying, at Rudy Lingganay sa UE. Lahat sila naglalaro na sa Asean Basketball League. Si Nonoy Baclao nga hindi na rin makakalaro sa Ateneo eh. I expect the Ateneo Blue Eagles to reach the Quarters (Final Eight) then that’s it.
For UE, I really dont know.

I think the NCAA did a great job. they defended the UAAP All-Stars well, but I think the UAAP All-Stars were a little bit “PETIKS” and over confident.
Anyway, They played for a good cause.

Members of San Miguel’s 1989 Grand Slam team in the PBA threw a congratulatory dinner for teammate Ato Agustin who piloted the San Sebastian Stags to the 2009 NCAA Seniors Men’s Crown. The dinner held at the Kamayan sa EDSA featured: Tonichi Yturri, Elmer Reyes, Bobby Jose, Alvin Teng, Samboy Lim, Hector Calma, Franz Pumaren, and Agustin. Paul Alvarez later joined San Miguel but not as a part of the 1989 Grand Slam team.
