FIVE-TIME NAASCU champions University of Manila and host Lyceum University of the Philippines-Manila are on a collision course for the solitary Sweet 16 berth up for grabs in after two days of action in the 2009 Philippine Collegiate Champions League Manila A zonal tournament at the Lyceum Gym last November 10 and 11.
The UM Hawks crushed Philippine Christian University-Dasmariñas, 88-62 before taking down North/Central Luzon regional champions and NAASCU rivals Lyceum of Subic Bay, 83-77 in an epic encounter.
Against the 2009 NCAA-South runners-up, the Gastambide five turned up the heat on the defensive end, limiting them to just seven second quarter points. Jhunre Patricio scored 20 points to pace the Hawks, NAASCU runners-up for 2009. Arnel Barrientos and one-time PCU-Manila Dolphin Clarence Graham combined for 33 points in that matchup.
The next day, UM relied on a back-breaking triple from veteran Ryeon delos Trinos to upend Lyceum of Subic Bay. The Sharks had the chance to steal the game from the Hawks but failed to score on four offensive forays. Guard Jeff Viernes led the Hawks with 19 points, while JC Collado led the Olongapo City quintet with 32 markers.
Menawhile, Lyceum-Manila banked on the explosive tandem of Rich Guevarra and Joseph Abaya in both its games to equal UM with a 2-0 slate. In the Pirates’ 100-79 ransacking of the Sharks, the duo combined for 45 points to fuel the squad’s high-octane offense in a game where Lyceum-Subic Bay head coach Kerwin McCoy was slapped with a technical foul for incessant complaining.
Guevarra and Abaya then teamed up for 38 points as coach Bonnie Tan’s five disposed of a pesky PCU-Dasmariñas side on day two, 88-71. The Pirates led by as much as 12 points before a late Dolphin rally in the third forced a deadlock at 48. That was as close as the Dolphins could get, however, as the run-and-gun unit from Intramuros wracked up the points to seal the win.
Lyceum-Manila, newly-crowned ISSA champions, and UM engage in a winner-take-all game on November 12 to determine the zone’s lone representative to the Sweet 16.
