Cardinals back in PCCL fold

THE winning streak continues for the Mapúa Institute of Technology.

After closing out their NCAA Season 85 campaign with five-straight victories, the Mapúa Cardinals continued their winning ways and finished undefeated in Group B of the North/Central Luzon-Metro Manila Zonals in the 2009 Philippine Collegiate Champions League thanks to a win against the La Consolacion College Blue Royals on their home court last November 12, 2009.

With the win, Cardinals booked a return trip to the PCCL under rookie head coach, Chito Victolero.

Victolero wasn’t even focusing on the PCCL until the end of the NCAA Season.

“Yung after ng last game namin against St. Benilde, napagusapan namin na we have a chance sa PCCL. Meron kaming chance na mag-number six. And then, magandang training ito para sa amin, para doon sa next season na pinaghahandaan namin because yun nga yung kulang sa exposure nung last season. Medyo taranta kami. Sa last two munites medyo naghehesitate pa rin lahat, nagdadalawang isip. Now, ito yung magandang training para sa amin para yung confidence namin, ng bawat isa sa amin, individually and as a team tumaas,” said the former collegiate star who was part of the last Mapúa team that won an NCAA Championship in 1991.

Allan Mangahas led the way for the Intramuros based squad with 23 points. He put on a shooting exhibition in the opening quarter, stroking four three-point shots. The 2008 NCAA Rookie of the year finished with five three-point baskets while Erwin Cornejo added three three-point shots. Big man Jason Pascual also joined the shooting party in the fourth quarter, scoring all his 12 points from beyond the arc.

Mapúa’s biggest lead was 23 points at 78-55 with only 1:29 left in regulation. They breezed through their opponents easily but not after a tight first quarter where the Blue Royals remained in striking distance. Vocal point guard Glenn Gadelina scored 21 points for the home team.

Victolero knows that his team can play at a high level but they still have some adjustments to make entering the Sweet 16.

“Tingin ko, aayusin pa namin yung start namin kasi ngayon bad start kami. Pero for the past two games medyo maganda yung start namin. Pero ngayon, siguro medyo confident sila na akala nila ganun-ganun lang yung kalaban.”

In the first game, the Central Colleges of the Philippines Bobcats upset reigning and back-to-back Universities and Colleges Athletic Association champion Universal College Dragons, 77-70. Joseph Ubalde scored 27 points for the Aurora quintet in the win.

Mapúa ended the zonal leg with a 3-0 mark, while CCP, UC and La Consolacion wound up with 1-2 slates.

Talk about being on a roll!

What they are riding on now is telling on what can they do next season.

If they will have an easy opening game next season, I dare say they’re confidence is MAXIMUM HIGH!!!

    VIVA MAPUA!!!!

Cardinals will be a dangerous team next season!! Watch out..

  • Galactic Alignment says:

I dont hate San Sebastian, nor I am a Bedan, but come on people. Dave Najorda doesn’t deserve to be called an all star.

    Nuff said.

  • Kish Co??? says:

I think the UAAP roster hit it right on the button, except for La Salle’s representative (Kish Co? Are you serious?). I wouldn’t mind having Lester Alvarez or Woody Co though…

  • the punk zappa says:

    nice one cardings..

hope the team could develop the raw talent and skills of the new players..

    :D

  • batang MAPUA says:

  • BEBBEB says:

I think DLSU is playing at Naga.

  • MakaveliDies says:

    LATE ATA ANG NEWS NYO!

PANALO NA BASTE AND NCAA ALL STAR!
    KAWAWANG UAAP!

    BRAVO BASTE!
    BAHO BEDA!

  • IronTears says:

@cool kaming UAAP Really? Look at your post. It reflect to your self. Think wisely before you post some funny just like u did. Siguro nga superior school ka but in a lower class. How cheap u are.

  • hekhek says:

  • simonsmug says:

    @hekhek

why would san beda even bother rubbing elbows with these lumpens and morons here?

ONLY SAN BEDA CAN MAKE AN NCAA TITLE LOOK GOOD

  • roda amores says:

whats the medecine i have to take for my yeast infection?

  • dr. kepweng says:

    @roda

just let simonsmug suck it out hahahahaha

  • Hellboy says:

    Ahahahahahaha!

Wow! NCAA did a great job. Congrats!

Juniors: Dela Cruz is all hyped and talent (no wonder a lot of scouts are eyeing on him).

Seniors: Damn! NCAA proved it all this year. Even without the San Beda and JRU squads, they’re hot!

Aquino and Wilson, they’re indeed the killers. UAAP esp. the fans can only sit and watch how their side collapsed.

Oh well, it’s just a game for them. But the PCCL is the much awaited.

Once again, Congrats to the NCAA team.

    ANIMO!!!

  • No San Beda says:

is it true that the red lions are going to skip this year’s pccl?

apparently the lions are not confident of their chances of even making it to the final four?

  • Galactic Alignment says:

    @ No San Beda,
Hanggang ngayon ba hindi pa nakakamove on ang Red Lions? Sana maglaro sila, sana manalo and then they can wear their shirts that reads “Graduated Champions 5-6-7-8-14″.
And I also have to mention, I want to see Sudan Daniel go up against the 6’9 Jun Mar Fajardo of the Univ. of Cebu Webmasters. I’ve read in some internet discussions that this guy creamed the Ateneo Frontline.

  • REDTUBE says:

UPDATE SA PCCL!!! CNO CNO BA ANG MGA TEAM NA KASALI???

  • Bahag ang Buntot says:

confirmed na, hindi na lalaro ang san belat sa pccl. pero ang daming version ng kuwento, version one is takot silang mapahiya muli kaya’t andun sa cebu ngayon iyung mga hunghang may exhibition games, the other version is that the boosters have pulled out their support so wala daw pera san belat pink lions ngayon.

grabe, bumahag ang buntot ng leon.

  • Galactic Alignment says:

Well, losing destroys you’re confidence. Its just too bad that the public gets to see that, and make fun of it.

  • Papalicious says:

    ahahahahay

  • itlog says:
