MAPUA Institute of Technology banked on a strong fourth quarter anchored on the 15-point production of rookie Mike Parala to trounce the two-time reigning UCAA Champion Universal College Dragons, 83-65 on day one of the Manila B leg of the PCCL Qualifiers at the La Consolacion Gym Manila last November 10.

After trailing by 10 points in the first period, the Dragons fired away in the second period to cut down Mapua’s lead to three before the Cardinals settled for a seven-point advantage at the half.

The biggest lead for the Cardinals stood at 19, 75-56 off a split from the charity line by Mark Sarangay with under three minutes remaining in the fourth period. Parala, a seldom-used big man, scored most of his points from under-goal stabs off feeds from Mapua’s court generals in that crucial payoff period stretch.

A hard foul given by UC cager Mark Derder on Ellison Maniego on a fastbreak play with under a minute remaining almost ignited a free-for-all, which was intervened by cooler heads. Allan Mangahas led the Cardinals in scoring with 18 points while Lendmark Montilla paced the Dragons with 13 markers.

In the second game, MMCIAA champions La Consolacion Blue Royals literally turned their homecourt into a playground after showing the CCP Bobcats the door with a commanding 98-75 thumping.

Chief Bobcat Engelbert Carreon’s 21 points went down the drain after his teammates failed to support his scoring output. Mel Mabigat led the Blue Royals in scoring with 22 while Glenn Cadalina added 21.

The biggest lead for La Consolation stood at 26, 96-70, late in the fourth where the Bobcats failed to set up their offense efficiently.
