Aerial Voyager is now Head Coach of the Heavy Bombers

After missing this year’s NCAA Finals, the Jose Rizal University administration decided to make a major coaching change.

By letting go of Coach Ariel Vanguardia, JRU has announced in a formal press conference hosted by the school administration held within the school grounds that, Vergel Meneses, known as the Aerial Voyager in the pros, will take over the helm as head coach of the JRU Heavy Bombers starting Nov 9, 2009.

“The management wanted to take a new direction. We wanted a fresh face hopefully to end our now 38-year title drought” said JRU Athletics Director Paul Supan.

Vergel Meneses was the PBA’s Most Valuable Player in 1995 while playing for Sunkist.  Meneses has also won Best Player of the conference awards three straight times, is a two-time Mythical Team member, has an All-Star MVP Award, 3 PBA titles with 7 PBA finals appearances.

Dr. Vincent K. Fabella, assisted by Athletics Director Paul Supan, said that the former JRU standout has  signed a three-year contract and will be including able assistants Ricky Alcantara, former FedEx colleague Vic Escudero, former Sunkist colleague Jun Chiongco and Nat Gregorio.

Other notable figures in the Heavy Bombers fold include former team trainer of the DLSU Green Archers in the UAAP, Dan Rose, and Meneses’ long-time mentor Derrick Pumaren who will act as team consultant.

“I am very excited about this job. This is my first head coaching job. I want to thank JRU for this opportunity.  I want this team to be more of a defensive team. We’ll work on the rotation, ball movement and we’ll try to instill our own system slowly”, Coach Meneses said about his eventual return to his Alma Mater.

    @dj bombers

    http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/228911/ncaa-mvp-wilson-quits-jru

    reason for leaving: nagtampo sa jru management dahil sa pagtanggal kay vanguardia.

    mas tumatanaw siya ng utang na loob kay vanguardia kaysa kay supan at fabella.

    although kung ako tatanungin mo siyempre malakas din loob ni wilson ngayon kasi naman ncaa mvp siya eh.

    @ hunghang

    tnx for info..

    Mahirap at mabigat talaga ang desisyon na ginawa ng JRU..dun sa pagtanggal kay Coach Ariel..
    Syempre, malaking accomplishment ang naibigay nya sa Jose Rizal U..
    to the extent na muntikan na mag champion ulit ang team after several years of hoping to get one..
    tapos, puro final four appearances pa..

    Pero, ganun talaga eh..para bang nasa isip ng JRU mgt..OO nadala mo kami sa final four at sa Championship round..pero hanggang dun lang talaga eh..
    ang hinahangad namin eh mapagchampion ang team at hindi lang basta runner-up..

    But then, di matatawaran ng JRU ang nagawa ni Coach Ariel..samantalang halos rookie ang naiwan sa kanya ni Former Coach Calilan..pero, ayun nga, nakaya nyang i-handle at idevelop ang team to be a usual contender pagdating sa F4 ng NCAA..

    Para bang, kung sa akin nangyari un..ang matanggal agad agad..pagkatapos kung paghirapan ang team..masakit at parang mahirap tanggapin..

    gayunpaman, ganun ang buhay eh..di ba weather weather lang yan?! sabi ni kuya kim..kumbaga, walang permanente sa mundo..

    Anyway, I wanna congratulate and thanks John Wilson, James Sena, Jhe Agas, Marc Cagoco and Coach Ariel Vanguardia for leading JRU into some exciting games that you’ve brought in NCAA in 3-4 seasons..you make JRU fans proud to be a student or alumni of our school..

    We wish you all the best in your respective futures either inside the court or outside the basketball world. May you find your right path and also find your true home..

    God Bless you all..

    and, Welcome back Coach Vergel Meneses, as well as to Consultant Manong Derek and other coaching staff..
    We do not expect more than what coach ariel did in the JRU campaign on all his season along JRU Heavy Bombers..but, we will entrust you to bring us the slippery crown..

    JRU Heavy Bombers…the best is yet to come..

    we cannot blame wilson ariel is his mentor but wilson never realized that he will learn more with a person who understand the game much better and that’s the aerial voyager.

    @ FoodForThought,
    Wala na rin si Marc Cagogo. Graduate na rin yata. He’s older than me by a couple of months.

    1 year na lang elibility ni wilson, pag lumipat pa siya ng school mukhang hindi na rin siya makakalaro kasi he needs to undergo residency pa.

    It would be NOT to his interest if Wilson will opt not to play for the bombers next season. He is now a marquee player and further media exposure will help his cause, more so if the bombers reaf the FF again next year and be runner-up or even champions. Kung hindi siya maglalaro, he will not rank high in the PBA draft, like Ford Arao or Menor, kasi out of sight, out of mind. Of course if he will play very safe like Sena, o mas mabuti huwag na lang siyang maglaro. These two guys, Sena and Cagoco cost the bombers the crwon. Even if they defeated the Stags, they would have been devoured by the Lions for their four peat. In a way, the bombers got their revenge by letting the stags win over them.

    Nung nag-quit si Wilson, he said that part of it, dahil sa pagkaka-tanggal ni CAV. hindi kaya may mas malalim pang reason si Wilson like para makaiwas sa “game fixing” issues?

    may kumakalat na issue daw kasi sa jru na after nung f4, where Wilson had bad games, bigla daw sya nagkaroon ng bagong kotse.

    well, i hope it’s not true. idol ko pa naman sya.

    @Tiyagong Akyat

    imbento ka naman eh, commute lang kaya araw araw pauwi ng Binangonan iyang si wilson. bagong kotse, asus, napaka non-sense ng post mo eh.

    sina bill velasco nga mismo nagsabi na may sakit si wilson during the final four matches with baste. gago nito, basta may ma post lang.

    game fixing mo mukha mo.

    @Ulul

    bagay na bagay sayo pangalan mo. isa kang malaking ulul.

    student ng jru ang nagsabi sa akin nun. dahil un daw ang bali-balita sa skul nila. pero i’m not against Wilson. i said i hope it’s not true. pero kung totoo man un, hindi ko din sya masisisi, baka sinanay din sila ng admin na maglaro para sa materyal na bagay.

    anyway, ung pagpapaliwanag ko ay para sa mga taong baka inaakalang galit ako kay Wilson. pero hindi ko kailangang magpaliwanag sa mga ulul jan.

    @Tiagong Akyat

    student ng jru o student sa panaginip mo? gagogis ka pala eh, second hand information lang pala ang nasagap mo pinagkakalat mo pa. chismoso.

    ako mismo kapitbahay nina wilson sa binangonan, ang tawag ng mga ka-barangay diyan sa amin eh hapon. so kung totoo ang paratang mo na may bagong kotse iyan eh dapat nakaparada na ngayon iyun dun sa tapat ng bahay nila.

    tanga mo.

    @ulul

    tama si tyago, totoo na may kumakalat na ganung issue sa school namin. ang nagsabi pa sa akin athlete din ng school namin. of course ayaw namin paniwalaan un.

    pano mo nasabi na nagco-commute lang si wilson? eh sa school namin madaming nakakakita sa kanya. isa pa, don’t use harsh words, sayo din nagre-reflect yan.

    @Tyagong_Akyat

    i hope hindi ka naniniwala sa issue na un. Mabait na tao si Wilson.

    tama ka din sa sinabi mo na baka sinanay sila ng admin. sabi nga nung isang band member sa amin, nakausap daw nila ung waiter sa kamayan nung nagpunta sila dun after yata ng clc, ginagawa daw carinderya ng mga players ung restaurant. tapos lagi silang may bonus. nasanay sila na maglaro para sa pera hindi para sa school.
