ARELLANO University and University of San Carlos booked return trips to the Philippine Collegiate Champions League Sweet 16 after emphatically finishing their zonal campaigns at the West Negros University Gym in Bacolod City last November 6, 2009.

Needing a win to keep alive its round of 16 hopes, host WNU failed to break down a tough-as-nails Arellano five as it bowed out of contention, 79-67. After a tight first half, the Chiefs broke the game open in the third period, outscoring the Mustangs, 24-15. Big man and NCAA Mythical Five member Gio Ciriacruz, in his last year for the Legarda outfit, led a balanced offensive attack with 17 points, with Andrian Celada scoring 15 to tow the undefeated Chiefs.

It was a disappointing evening for WNU, who finished its campaign with a 1-2 slate. Alfie Villariza waxed hot with 30 markers, but it proved to be futile as the Mustangs will be missing out on the Sweet 16 for the second straight year despite capturing the NOPSSCEA crown for the 11th consecutive season. Rolly Jaca and Jeff Jacinto, WNU’s usual suspects, were held to a combined three points as well by Arellano’s stifling defense.

Joining the Chiefs in the knockout round are the USC Warriors, who romped past Mindanao regional titlists Holy Trinity College, 86-63. One-time Philippine Christian University forward Sam Hermosa led the Warriors’ onslaught with 13 points, while Marvin Duran chipped in with 11. HTC failed to win a single game in the Bacolod zonal after a spirited display in the regionals, which included wins over more fancied opponents such as Ateneo de Davao University and Cagayan de Oro Colleges.

Meanwhile, action shifts to the Cebu zonals as CESAFI runner-up University of Cebu, UAAP fifth-placer Adamson University, two-time defending NAASCU champion San Sebastian College-Recoletos de Cavite and CESAFI fourth-placer University of San Jose-Recoletos do battle in a round-robin format for two more tickets to the Sweet 16.
