JRU, Vanguardia part ways

THE management of Jose Rizal University has formally relieved Ariel Vanguardia of his coaching duties after a four-year stint with the team.

Vanguardia, who was brought in just a week before the start of the 2006 season following the resignation of Cris Calilan, said he signed a two-year deal just this year but was discharged because of a clause in that contract.

“The clause stated that I’d be relieved of my duties if I failed to make a return trip to the finals,” he said.

Under the tutelage of Vanguardia, the Heavy Bombers turned their fortunes around in the country’s oldest collegiate basketball league. After going 6-22 in 2004 and 2005, JRU tapped the services of the Calamba native, who helped steer the Shaw unit to three consecutive Final Four stints, including a finals appearance in Season 84, where it was a win away from ending the longest active title drought in the league today.

All in all, the De La Salle University alum compiled a 40-27 (.597) record. What made his stint with JRU extra special, though, was his contribution to the careers of his key players.

“From two consecutive last-placed finishes, I was able to help transform the school into one of the most feared teams in the league. I am proud of my players. Marc [Cagoco] was a discard of St. Francis of Assisi, John Wilson did not make the cut in San Sebastian. Je [Agas] played for the Stags in high school but was cut, too. Jayson Nocom was a reject from De Ocampo Memorial College, and even Marvin Hayes was cut from National University’s Team B. No one wanted them. I’m glad I was able to become a part of their lives,” Vanguardia told inboundpass.com.

In response to speculations that a couple of his players were involved in game-fixing this year, the 37-year-old tactician said, “I believe in all my players. I’ll stand by them and won’t point a single finger at anyone. It just wasn’t meant to be [this year].”

Assistant coaches Lito Vergara, John Aquino and Franco Atienza were also relieved of their responsibilities. None of them will be taking the coaching helm for the Heavy Bombers in their Philippine Collegiate Champions League stint. As the NCAA’s third-placed team, JRU already has a spot in the Sweet 16, which commences on November 23.

Vergel Meneses, a JRU alum, is expected to fill the coaching void in Mandaluyong City.

Currently, Vanguardia is applying for the vacant National University coaching job. “I’ve joined the bandwagon for the NU job. With solid support, the Bulldogs have so much potential. In fact, I see the 2006 JRU team in NU today. I think it would be a perfect opportunity for me to settle unfinished business with NU.”

    Maybe coach ariel should also mention how much money was spent on his program. as far as I know, with the amount he spent, Final 4 is not enough. Imagine dining at Kamayan every game plus the amount of bonus given to the players and staff. They were even given bonus on some games that were lost.

    How about the blue chip players that became discards with him? former juniors mythical team members who were recruited by different school but chose to stay with JRU under Vanguardia. What happend to the career of these kids?

    Making a sellar dwellar improve is not so difficult. 1 win more than the previous season is already an improvement. Dont even need to recruit to do that. What more if you’re supported by the Management to recruit player from the province? Then i think making the final 4 is the least that you can do.

    Thanks to the guest teams, most of the regular final 4 team coaches improved their record by 6 wins, except for Letran which was upset by AU in the 1st round. I think regular NCAA teams should not brag about their wins against the guest teams. Nothing against the guest teams, but they are suppose to be “rookies” or “fresh meat” to the regular members.

    I’m not really amazed by the “accomplishments” of coach AV, because I know that there were some previous coaches of JRU who also made the final 4 and even the finals without much support from the JRU management.

    If I was part of the management, then I’d rather hire the coach who doesn’t spend that much but help my team win and make the final 4. Rather than a coach that demands so many things and gives the same result.

  • More Money... Pacquiao says:

    Wow, Vergel Meneses, the “Aerial Voyager”.
    I hope that makes the same impact as the “”Atomic Bomb” Coach Ato Agustin to the San Sebastian Stags. But I doubt it. Masyadong Lagas ang JRU eh, compared to the Stags. But I hope this starts something new to the Heavy Bombers’ system, and confidence. James Sena was just disappointing. Good thing hes gone.

    And oh, I hope Coach Vergel teaches John Marion Wilson the “Yoyo” shot, hehe. Both Wilson and coach Vergel are good scorers. Hopefully Wilson becomes a lot better because he now has a Big time scorer for a coach.

  • Esplendente says:

    I have mixed feelings with regards to the departure of Vanguardia. To his credit, he did make the Bombers a potent andd feared team during the time he was at the helm. However, he was not able to execute well the match-ups of players that his former trainor, Coach Louie Alas, was very well adept at. His constant reliance of hot-dogger Marc Cagaco, a JRU sorry version of RJ Jazul and the failure to motivate James Sena who played safe, to new heights after getting drafted in the PBA, made a repeat finals appearance a non-event. Of course, he can be comforted at knowing his team was defeated by NCAA champion Stags. I just feel the chemistry of this team is not that well blended to take them to the top.

    As to whether Vergel Menesses can do an Ato Agustin remains to be seen. We’ll have an inkling of that in the PCCL battles, though it’s too early to do an evaluation.

    With Etame Joe recovering from his injury and achieving the potential he has shown in the few games he played in during the conluded season, with Njei, Wilson, Hayes, Bulangis, and Apinan and the other back-up center who played good minutes, this team still has what it takes to go for the crown again next year. The graduation of Cagoco means he will not be a disruptive factor (read as bakaw). The graduation of Sena means they will not rely on a big man who suddenly lost the will, the heart to fight, after being darfted by a big POBA team. If Sena shows that kind of fighting heart (read as walang “puso”) he will not last long in the PBA.

    More importantly, the team still has support of management and the JRU community to end the 38 year drought. That is manifested in getting a new coach and letting go an old one who can only bring the team to a position less than a championship.

    @Bomber_Insider

    from 6-22 to 40-27 walang nagawa? sus, wala pa palang nagawa si vanguardia niyan?

    malas niyo lang malalakas din mga kalaban niyo. this year bakit siya ang sinisisi ninyo eh hindi ba obvious na nagiba ng laro si sena? si sena ang sisihin niyo huwag iyung coach.

    guaranteed na legal ang pagtanggal sa kanya eh okay lang, pero ang hindi okay ay ang mga comments ng mga tulad mo na nag-do-downplay ng achievements niya.

    ikaw kaya mag coach? baka nga isang panalo eh wala kang makuha.

  • Mang Inasal says:

    @Bomber_Insider

    “Imagine dining at Kamayan every game”

    excuse me po, dito lang sa Mang Inasal Hypermart Shaw Blvd nakain ang mga jru heavybombers at si coach. luging lugi nga kami sa rice eh, si sena ang lakas lumamon, nakaka 12 rice pero isang petso lang ang ulam.

    si njei pati buto nung manok kinakain.

  • Bomber_Insider says:

    @Mang_Inasal

    During ordinary days na walang laro or baka after practice lang siguro ang sinasabi mo. Pero I’m very sure na pag NCAA games, sa Kamayan Edsa yan. Kilala na nga sila ng mga waiter dun eh.

    Pinapakaen rin pala ng JRU dyan ang mga players kahit na wala silang laro o pag galing ng practice. Ganon talaga kalaki ang GASTOS sa team ni AV.

    Yung mga players nga daw dati, nasa gitna na ng NCAA game, hindi pa daw nag aalmusal. Pero pumasok ng Finals yun. Baka dapat gutomin na ang players para kalaban nalang ang kainin sa laro.

  • tssss... says:

    ang daming alam!! tsktsk!

  • tssss... says:

    pati ba naman pagkain sa kamayan, pakielamanan?

  • Inggit Lang says:

  • Dumb says:

    oh boy, this has got to be one of the dumbest moves ever. obviously jru has no idea that it not only is replacing a coach but a system as well.

    i don’t know if there is a personality clash between vanguardia and the powers behind jru but i do hope them jru demigods know what they are doing.

    letting go of a person is one thing but letting go of a system? an effective and productive one at that.

    this will be an easy prediction, this team will get creamed in the pccl under a new coach, for that matter this team will miss the final four in the ncaa next year.

  • hunghang says:

    @Bomber_Insider

    as if naman mga magagaling na iyang sina wilson, hayes, nocom, sena, etc. nung kinuha sila at dinevelop ni vanguardia.

    lahat nga iyung mga iyan eh reject.

    tapos blue chip recruits kamo na sinayang? sino? si kabigting? si matute? anak ng pating oh, blue chip ba iyung mga iyan?

    anong bangko mo pare, bigyan na lang kita ng pangkain sa kamayan para tumigil ka na sa kadadada dito.

  • Bomber_Insider says:

    @hunghang

    Kabigting, Lithunia and Lopez. Mga mythical yan nung panahon nila sa sa NCAA Juniors. Kasabayan nila sila Salamat, Lee, Raba, Pascual, etc. Una pa sila kay Buenafe, Bringas at Salva. Pero naiwan na sila ng mga ito.

    Masakit talaga minsan ang katotohan.

    wala naman kuneksyon kung may pangkaen ako o wala eh, hindi rin naman ako gutom. kaya hindi naman kailangan manghingi sayo. Salamat nalang. Baka mas kailanganin mo yan

  • swabeman says:

    Regarding issue on Kamayan Edsa dine in – for information of everybody, the owners of the said restaurant have a longtime connection with JRU,as far us i can remember one of the owner is a former Dean of JRC now JRU and a son is a instructor in the school.I think they are also an alumni and a supporter of the Team.

  • Bomber_Insider says:

    @swabeman

    thanks for the info. But i think the owners are not giving free Buffet meals to the “Heavies community”

    Sa laki ng delegation ng Heavies, kahit 50% off sa bill nila, MALAKI pa rin yun. At hindi naman siguro magbibigay ng 50% yun.

  • ganun pala yun, tinabla pala si john wilson at je agas sa BASTE, sayang magaling pa naman itong dalawang players na ito, sana man lang nakatikim sila in their college life ng championship. dibale bawi na lang kayo next year. agas at wilson mahusay kayo pareho pero puro star na kasi sa baste mahirap na makasingit.

  • Bomber_Insider says:

    @SOLID LINE UP…

    Bro, I agree with your dreamteam. But fyi lang, si Pamboy Raymundo hindi nag juniors sa Baste. I think he studied at a Makati public high school before trying out for the Golden Stags. Si Je Agas din hindi nag suit up for the baste juniors, he was just in team b. I think just like you I am also a fan of the 2005 baste juniors batch. I followed the career of the guys you mentioned. best regards.

  • macky says:

    so the trend in college basketball is continuous in evolving… now its JRU’s turn to do a ‘magic run’ with Meneses calling the shots. To early to tell… Baste in the pre-season was considered as dark horse and end up as NCAA champions.

    For Vanguardia, maybe National U will be his next job of doing something great for the bulldogs. Reshaping the NU’s basketball program is big task to do and parang JRU yan from whipping boys to respectable finishes. However, the UAAP playing field is different from the NCAA, so we’ll see IF VANGUARDIA will sign a contract for NU kasi according na din sa article na ito “he’s joining the bandwagon and applying for NU…”

    ang dami ng dapat abangan sa UAAP at NCAA teams this coming Philippine Collegiate Championships and most importantly to the major leagues next season. The younger Pumaren will call the shots for DLSU, if Vanguardia will be the NU coach, this is something to watch for, Meneses for JRU (correct me if I’m wrong, kasama ba si Vergel Meneses sa last championship ng JRU or nung 80′s na siya?)

  • N_U says:

  • cannibal says:

  • JRU fan NO more says:

    Coach Ariel and his Coaching Staff’s last tour of duty for the Heavy Bombers was last Thursday, Oct 29 at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig in a tune-up game against the RP-Youth team handled by Eric Altamirano.

    I am certain that the school was fully aware of that said tuneup game but for me who watched the game, is not in favor of JRU not even sending the usual ‘support’ for the team. What im pertaining to is the basics. They weren’t even provided transportation going to the venue, and were not even provided water(asking for gatorade is probably too much now).

    Only Jeckter Apinan and Joel Gabriel suited up from Team A, and the rest are Team B players. Basically, after the game, Coach Ariel gathered his boys for one last huddle which lasted for more than 30minutes.

    From what I’ve heard from some of the team staff, if they only knew they wouldn’t get paid from Oct 16 onwards( since they get paid every 15th and 30th of the month), they probably could have opted not to show up anymore during their playoffs with San Sebastian last Oct 16 where they even won the game with the Aquino-less Stags.

    Even though they lost on Oct 19 against the Stags in a do-or-die match, they still had team functions thereafter. It was around noon of Oct 29 when the JRU coaches were informed that their contracts were not be renewed anymore. What they didn’t know was, earlier that day, at 7am Sir Supan went to the Players’ dorm, woke them up really early and forced them all to go to school and enroll for the second semester.

  • Bomber_Insider says:

    @JRU Fan NO more

    Knowing how spoiled the Heavy Bombers are, they would surely be given gatorade if they informed the school that they have an official game. But as you said. it was only a tune up game. and Ynares was just 1 ride away from their dorm.

    Not providing water and transportation is nothing new to JRU. Dapat siguro sanay na sila dun. Atleast sa mga official games ng mga Heavy Bombers palagi silang may supplies at may transportation. I think even Seniors Team B get supplies of Gatorade pag may official game.

    You should know that the Light Bombers had a game this NCAA season were the hydration came just before the half time break of the game. It is also not a strange scene to see the Light Bombers taking jeepneys or even “sabit” going to official non NCAA games. These are Team A light bombers, including the record breakers and the award winners. So dont expect to much for the Team B’s in tune up games. We dont even know how many of these Team B player will become Heavies.

    As I said in my previous post, the management should be part of the blame for the not so successful season of the Bombers. Not all the blame should be directed at AV.

  • Bomber_Insider says:

    I really hope that coach AV will be gentleman enough to accept the decision of the school. To make the transition much easier for the players.

    Hopefully AV did not say anything bad against the new group of coaches that will be coming in. As a coach, AV should know that the players responsibility is to the school that gives them scholarships and bonuses. The support given to the player did not come from his own pocket.

    Hopefully there were no statements like “I made you qualify for the PCC, so I should be the one coaching in PCC” or “the new coach does not deserve to coach you” or anything like that.

  • Bomber_Insider says:

    I think coach AV should be thankful to the school for giving him the chance to coach a team that is well supported. If coach AV thinks that JRU became more popular with him at helm, he should also think the other way around that, his popularity also increased when he became the coach of the Bombers.

    Who knows this might become his stepping stone to a better coaching career. If he really thinks he did a good job, with the bombers, he doesn’t even need to brag about it. Other team owners or school owners will evaluate and notice what he has done.

  • kaya nga lahat ng coaches gusto sa NU because of henry sy. self explinatory nalang.

  • jarencio na pala sa NU, panu si vandolph? sa san beda kaya? he he he

    Tuneup game nga, pero its like you’re implying na since Tuneup game lang, wala na dapat pakialam ang school admin? So if may masaktan na player or magka-injury during that tuneup game, hindi sagot ng school admin dahil hindi official like you’re claiming?

    One ride away nga ang Ynares from JRU (or from their dorm)pero dapat padin well-supported ang team pre-season, during the season and post-season kasi dala padin nila ang pangalan ng JRU sa jerseys nila diba,

    Apparently, half team A and half team B ang dapat lalaro, pero sino lang ba from Team A ang nandun? siguro naman if the other Heavies showed up early, sila maglalaro. I guess it was a silent protest nadin na they showed up nga para manood lang nung game. And coincidentally, 85% of the team and the coaching staff, either naka-white or black nun.

    I dont agree with the silent protest on the part of the players and coaches. Management decision yan, if they have something in mind, they should voice it out.

    Like I told you, may problema rin talaga ang management ng JRU Athletics. Nangyari yan sa Juniors team during their 1st round game against AUF.

    Dont be to emotional about it. You can ask coach Lito about that. Back to Back champion coach siya pero inalis siya. And he moved on. I think these are challenges that will make AV better.

    I find it surprising for JRU Management to dish a termination contract in ungentlemanly conduct, after all AV has given JRU a shot at many Final 4 appearances and a Finals with the Red Lions last season.

    Its seems so ungrateful for the school to shove up a “good riddance” in an unfashionable way to a worthy nemesis.

    Seems that NU job is not in the plate now as Jarencio is in.

    I don’t know if the road to glory is by burning bridges.

    PAX!
