With Jimbo Aquino now back in harness after serving his one game suspension acquired during their playoff game against San Beda, the San Sebastian Golden Stags formalized their dream match-up with the three-time defending champs via a 79-64 whiplashing of last year’s runner-up Jose Rizal University in their winner-take-all match on October 19, 2009 at the Filoil Flying V Arena.

“When we lost, we didn’t have a legitimate go-to-guy. That’s where we missed the services of Jimbo [Aquino] in our match last Friday. Everytime we run our plays it will always go to our best gunner andf that’s Jimbo, said a jubilant San Sebastian Head Coach Ato Agustin.

After dropping their game last Oct 16 against the Heavy Bombers, Jimbo Aquino easily scored 7 -points from the opening tip where the Golden Stags held JRU scoreless for almost 5 minutes with a blistering 19-0 run for a commanding 21-point advantage.
Calvin Abueva was a force tallying 10 point, 4 rebounds in just 9 minutes of action in the first half.   JRU was not able to get some decent numbers from their leading MVP candidate John Wilson who   was held to only 8 points from an 18 points per game average.

The Heavy Bombers’ were able to trim the deficit down to within 8-points, 38-46 courtesy of John Njei John Nje at the 6:34 minute mark of the 3rd quarter.

“As I’ve said, Monday will be a different ball game. We would like to have a very light practice but we wanter to execute our plays smoothly in preparation for today’s game, added Coach Ato Agustin.

The Heavy Bombers only had 12 assists in the game compared to San Sebastian’s 22 assists.

San Sebastian marks their first Finals appearance in six years, where they will face a very tall order against the reigning three-peat champions, San Beda College.

“Going into our Finals match with San Beda where Hermida did major damage on us in our two meetings last week, we have thought about our game plan. The Finals will be a different story, continued Coach Ato Agustin.

Calvin Abueva had 18 points, 6 rebounds while Jimbo Aquino added 14 points.  JR Sena tallied 13 points for JRU with Marc Cagoco and John Agas combined for 17 points.

BOX SCORES:

SAN SEBASTIAN 79 – Abueva 18, Aquino 14, Najorda 9, Sangalang 8, Pascual 8, Del Rio 8, Bulawan 7, Raymundo 5, Gatchalian 2, Semira 0, Maconocido 0.

  • comment says:

    FYI for those people who keep on bashing our school’s about our imports… first of all su was was not recruited by one of our scouts in fact he voluntarily joined the try outs and eventually made it to the line up… why he did not go to other schools or to your school? it was an obvious answer… but better as him why… complaining about our line up nxt year? complain to your own basketball program not to us…

  • Calvin25 says:

    hehehehehe

  • Arriba '06 says:

    Congratulations to the winners. It was an exciting final four and I hope it will carry over to the next season which is Season 86. I’m expecting a younger and hungrier Letran Knights team next year with the new leadership of Kevin Alas. I hope Tampus and Khobuntin will follow Kevin Alas to the seniors team and form a formidable trio of former Squires. In the seniors team of Letran, they are guaranteed a chance to shine on their debut season with Jazul and Guevarra gone next season. It’s a big clue who will step up big time with Kevin Alas next season with so many new unknown player in the roster. Just like how RJ Jazul surprised us with his revelations in Season 83.

    Arriba Letran!
    Animo Red! Animo Blue!
    Arriba Arriba!

  • Hopyster says:

  • hunghang says:

    @Arriba ’06

    oist huwag ka na umextra dito, eliminated na sina baba at ang knights mo.

  • Stags D'Champs says:

    we may have lost twice to san beda but people seem to forget that we weren’t at full strength during both games. during the first meeting we didn’t have bulawan in the lineup while during playoff game jimbo was suspended.

    i strongly believe that we are the better team and that san beda can’t beat us when we play our complete lineup.

    bravo baste, life continues.

  • tremendous effort JRU for extending the semis. Great going Baste!!! Beda is going to be tough, really tough! But, hell, lets give it to them. Hats off to Beda for making it first to the finals. Toughen up, Baste!

  • @ calvin 25

    anung pasimpleng sapak ni abueva? mali nga tawag ng referee dapat si hayes ang natechnical. for holding to the jersey short of abueva alam natin bawal yan. inalis lang ni abueva yung kamay ni hayes dahil kung hindi mahuhubadan ng shorts si abueva.

  • Skeptic_Bomber says:

    hmm..i smell something’s fishy on the JRU side (esp. on Wilson’s part), As we all know Wilson is a very aggressive player when it comes on winning an important game but it seems that Wilson didn’t play that aggressive as he used to. Maybe the defense of the Stags suffocated him that made him frustrated not to take his shots. Maybe. But not in 4 games that he played against the stags, not even a single game he showed a spectacular play as he always does with other teams and did no adjustments with the defense played on him. Is he really bothered on the defense of the Stags? or he has something else in his mind that made him not to be aggressive when playing with the Stags???

    Next..

    How come he didn’t appear on their practice session prior to their important game against the stags?
    Why didn’t he (Wilson) joined his team mates and coaches attend their mass at Sta. Clara on Sunday before the game as they always does whenever the team faces an important game? And why he didn’t appear on their team dinner on the same date?
    (His reason “masama kasi pakiramdam ko eh tska sinisipon ako) what kind of reason was that???

    During the pre-game he (Wilson) appears to be healthy (No signs of any Flu-like symptoms) and ready to win the game. But when the game starts and ended I never seen Wilson take over the game as if the game is not that important to him and even said to his team mates after the game that I quote “Bahala na kayo jan! Hinde na ako maglalaro next season.”. As far as i know, Wilson still have one more playing year with the bombers but why in the world he (Wilson) said that to his team mates whose hearts are heavily battered after loosing an important game of their lives?

    We don’t know why JM Wilson is doing this? So I’m a bit skeptic on his actions thinking that He might been paid on cold cash by someone whose in the position to do so; so much money that he didn’t play that good against the opposing team and even wouldn’t want to play anymore next season since he’s this season’s MVP.

    Maybe I’m over reacting about his actions but there is a probability that he may or he may not. I leave it to you guys on what you think about this.

    Mabuhay Rizal!

  • May Sakit Siya says:

    @Skeptic Bomber

    may sakit kasi si wilson eh

  • etaet says:

    @skeptic Bomber

    pag talo – talo, nag iisip pa ng ibang reason. bawi na lang kayo ng next season, kung may dapat palitan , si vanguardia yon.
