The San Beda Red Lions avenged their 1st round defeat from the San Sebastian Golden Stags with a come from behind, 71-67, come from behind victory and force a playoff for the top spot of the  elimination round standings in the 85th season of the NCAA at the FIloil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

A short jumper from Bam Gamalinda plus 2 pressure-packed free throws from Borgie Hermida was all the Red Lions needed to snatch the game away from the Golden Stags who had total control thru most of the way.

The absence of Gilbert Bulawan, averaging 8.4 points and 5.5 rebounds, probably hurt San Sebastian’ chances of making a repeat over San Beda.  San Beda successfully limited San Sebastian’s scoring leader and Jimbo Aquino (Birthdate oct 13), who usually averages 20.9 points per game, to just 9-points.

Sudan Daniel, coming off a 3-point performance in their last outing on Oct 2 against Letran exploded for 19 points and 13 rebonds to hand the Red Lions this much needed victory.

With the Golden Stags, who had a 2point advantage in the 4th quarter, were able to extend their lead to 8-points before Borgie Hermida scored 4 straight points and Garvo Lanete adding a basket to come within 2-points, 62-60 halfway thru the decisive period.
Sudan Daniel, Jake Pascual and Bam Gamalinda brought San Beda its first taste of the lead, 66-64 with 3:11 minutes remaining. The Golden Stags grabbed the lead for the last time with a jumper from the left corner from MVP candidate Jimbo Aquino, making the count 67-65, at the 2:36 minute mark.

Calvin Abueva had 15 points and 15 rebonds with Ian Sangalang and Ronald Pascual adding 12 points each. The Golden Stags had 20 turnovers against the Red Lions’ 16. The Golden Stags, however, led in the rebounding department, 49-43.

“ We were able to limit Aquino. The guys were playing one-on-one and trying to win the game by themselves so I asked the team to move the ball around make defensive stops.  Hopefully we could come up with the same intensity on our next game against San Sebastian, said Red Lions Head Coach Frankie Lim.

BOX SCORES:

SAN BEDA 71 – Daniel 19, Lanete 15, Hermida 12, Pascual 6, Dela Rosa 6, Gamalinda 6, Tecson 3, Caram 2, Marcelo 2, Tirona 0.

SAN SEBASTIAN 67 – Abueva 15, Sangalang 12, Pascual 12, Aquino 9, Maconocido 6, Najorda 5, Raymundo 3, Semira 3, Maiquez 2, Del Rio 0.

QUARTER SCORES: 15-18, 28-35, 54-56, 71-67.

    BTW, although Im a Bedan, I am not well convinced with the victory. Imagine missing half of all free throw attempts! It should be an easy win kung consistent sa freethrow shooting..

    Anyways. Goodluck on Wed.
    BTW another Thug would return in the form of BULAWAN

    thrilling win by our boys, it took me 18 games to admit this but the stags are for real. hope the team can match their intensity on wednesday.

    borgie showed up when he was needed, that’s what leaders do, they lead.

    to the real Bedans who post here, wag nang makipag-away. be humble in defeat and more so in victory. you are bedan gentlemen, act as one.

  • Bedista '08 says:

    Anyway, Congrats sa Red Lions.
    Welcome back Vintage borgie!

    Kudos to the Stags.
    See you again on Wednesday.

  • SirKnight III says:

    Great win congrats to the Red Lions. San Sebastian is a strong team, pero when we beat them on the last outing, it showed that San beda had a chance not only to give Baste another loss but to take the top seat in eliminations. Good game nang dalawang best teams.
    This also shows that there is no dominant tean in the 85th NCAA Senior Basketball. Everybody in the top four has a chance. Unfortunately it might not apply to my Letran, but we’re hopeful.

    Congrats to Beda!

    Arriba Letran!

  • Bedista '08 says:

    @ SirKnight III

    “One Knight Stand”.

    Good luck to your team. Get well soon Rey.

  • very nice game played by both teams but the integrity of the officiating of the game imho is questionable. tsktsk! specially the cheap shot to abueva were there is no call or even a warning from the zebras. but nonetheless congratulation to san beda.

  • living the life of quiet desperation says:

    there were a couple of no-calls on baste at the end such as the no-call on raymundo when he went in the lane. then the duty foul on sudan by abueva to stop the clock – was called flagrant!!! are you kidding me? beda was doing a good job passing the ball to avoid getting fouled. he was just trying to foul sudan to stop the clock. flagrant foul gives the connotation of trying to harm. it was inconsequential either way but i just wonder about the officiating in this game and in the beda-letran game.

  • itlog says:

    What’s with Abueva flexing his arms and smirking? Inuna ang angas e. tsk tsk. now he’s taught a lesson on humility by the RL’s.

  • RedHotBedan says:

    @itlog
    Sino yung isa pang maangas na nakachamba lang ng isang 3 pts kay Borgie eh nag “in your Face” motion pa ng kamay.. sa buong laro yun lang naman naipasok nya.. angas talaga!

    @living the life of quiet desperation
    yes may mga discrepancies sa tawag.. bodies flying at isa pa yung ala “chinese getup na ginawa ni abueva kay sudan” at yung mga tira ni Najorda? yun ba ang one sided o luto?

    may term dyan. Bawi lang

  • Baste. says:

    Badtrip. panalo na natalo pa. oh well a win is a win Congratularion San Beda, See you on wed.

  • Bedista '08 says:

    @ Uncle Bob Lucky 7 Club

    Cheap shot on Abueva?

    @ living the life of quiet desperation

    Abueva’s flagrant foul? That was on Borgie, hindi kay sudan.

  • wxyz says:

    @RedHotBedan

    si pamboy raymundo ata un..nkita ko rin un e..pero nung matapos ung game..nkita ko ung stats nia..3pts lng..

  • Tita Peng says:

    OHH….CONGRATULATIONS RED LIONS! AT LEAST ISA NA RIN SI TITA DITO NA HAPPY SA TAGUMPAY SA LARONG ITO! MORE PRAYERS FOR BAM & TEAM! I KNOW YOU’RE DOING YOUR BEST!
    MAY GOD BLESS!

  • itlog says:

    i think the last foul of abueva was not a flagrant. if so, he should have been the one who took the free throws instead of Hermida isnt it? i think it was a technical free throw because Su already passed the ball when he was fouled hard. and you can’t intentionally foul a player when the ball is not in his possession in the last 2 mins(i think). like a hack-a-shaq. i may be wrong.

  • Calvin@22 says:

    Oks ba ang acting ko kanina? Problema lang walang ref na nakakita. Sa wed, aarte ulit ako!

  • itlog says:

    @living the life of quiet desperation

    i think the officiating in this game is a lot better than the SBC-CSJL game where the refs didnt allow any form of physicality. you cant blame them. they just dont want the incident in the 1st rd to happen again.

    Hear Hear. Kitang-kita naman pagkatapos ng game sport lang on both sides. JRU is another story dahil kay van Dolph.

  • falcon_insider says:

    @RedHotBedan
    ung about kay raymundo d ata pagaAngas un…
    sa referee xa nakatingin tinakpan ata ni Hermida mukha niya pag attempt ng 3 kasi na shock c hermida sa attempt kasi ang layo…

    sana nxt tym maging consistent ang referee from start to finish pangit ang tawagan both sa Beda at Baste…
    pag nagkamali sa isang team ba2wi sa kbla…

    That’s how you show class!

    Bashing another school’s coach, when it’s your school’s coach who was not a gentleman enough to shake Vandolph’s hands when the Lions were defeated by the Bombers.

  • butatoy says:

    o well, bilog naman ang bola kaya ok lang kahit talo baste. well played game on both sides naman. wala lang sana pikunan, after all, basketball is a highly physical game. Bravo Baste!

  • Sir Knight III says:

    @ Bedista ’08

    Yes – torn ACL si Guevarra. He is out for the playoffs. Unfortunately with just Jazul, and the way our Srs B-ball team has been playing lately, we do not have a chance. You’re right. Sana may mag-step up to fill the shoes of Guevarra and be a good tandem to Jazul. I know the coaching team is working on that now. We just hope that the other players give a good game. Very upsetting to see only 2 players carry the team. With that said, it’s going to really be tough for us to beat San Beda or San Sebastian now. Our hopes are high, but we’re realistic. I predict San Beda and San Sebastian for the Championship game. These 2 teams are the best in the 85th NCAA. JRU is a strong 3rd team. Ang Letran Srs… just not good enough this year – still a good performance.

    Arriba!

  • RED&WHITE82 says:

    Congratulations for the must win Red Lions!

    Although yun batch namin ang hikayat ay wag naman ganyan na game, sa tanda namin aatakihin kami ng hika!

    Lets gun for another Red Lion win on Wednesday.

    All the best to you guys, and thank you Baste for a game that saw no one break away. Matindi kayo!

    @JaRvis

    Sorry Sir sa isang may nag bash sa JRU, the issue of Lim and Vanguardia goes back to Talk n Text days, years ago, when Lim (Team Manager) fired Vanguardia and this is not just in any JRU and SBC game. Win or lose he doesn’t shake hands, I don’t like it either but that’s the way Lim’s cookie crumbles.

    Bravo Baste

    Congrats SBC & SSC

  • racer_sebastinian says:

    It was indeed a good fight. Nice one Red Lions! It was a lucky break for you though a win is a win. For the San Sebastian, nothing to be ashamed of because from 1st until the 7 mins of the 4th quarter you did great, but when the time reaches almost 2 mins., the red lions surpass all the defense. Again, both teams did a great job. This is the preview of the finals already..

    What i admire me most are the crowd of both school. San Sebastian & San Beda show how educated they are. Yeah, there is what you call “asaran” pero walang pikunan. After the game, everyone are friends nothing personal. :) It is indeed the true spirit of the NCAA. Sebastinians & Bedans, keep it up! See you all on Wednesday again.. Wooohooo! BATTLE AT MENDIOLA PART 2!

    BRAVO BASTE, BEAT SAN BEDA!!!

  • Mang Roger says:

    @insider
    tama ka, final 4 positioning lang yun, at guarantee na sila sa twice to beat advantage, regardless kung sino manalo. Pero siyempre mas maganda kung top spot kasi makakalaban ang Guevarra-less Knights.

    Bravo Baste!

  • Six Pocket says:

    @racer_sebastinian

    I agree the its not just about the win, its about the spirit of sportsmanship. After the game, you see all the players talk and spend time encouraging each other. They need to show that to the fans and even after a hard fought game, no one walked away without congratulating each other.

    Yes, we got the breaks in the end game and it makes the Finals more interesting and challenging! Bravo Baste!

    Congratulations Red Lions, you showed grit in the last minutes. Kudos Borgie, am sure you are glad to have your game back after that injury…tamang tama ang pag dating ng game mo, when it mattered! The team is looking at your leadership! Go SAN BEDA FIGHT!!!

    I agree… I’m a San Miguel fan since I was a kid, and Coach Ato is an example of professionalism.

  • REGURK says:

    Onga pala, yang si Abueva, pwede na siyang BEST ACTOR of the game. Puro yabang kasi

  • bulag says:

    @living the life of quiet desperation

    bulag ka pala eh, it was hermida who was fouled by abueva. it was semira who fouled sudan, but abueva’s foul on hermida came first, abueva fouled hermida after the latter threw a pass to sudan.

  • ryndx says:

    tama. hindi pedeng i foul ang isang player pag ala sa kanya ang bola sa last 2mins ng game.

    For the Lions, practice your freethrows. sa mga dikit na games, kailangan yan. marcelo has to assert himself more esp. ala si baby shaq.

    Sana double win sa Wed for the cubs and the lions.

    ANIMO!!!
