40 minutes

A FAMOUS Broadway musical says we have approximately 525,600 minutes to spend in a year. For one team after Thursday, that same period of time will be lovely. For the other, excruciating.

After 8,622 points, 5,353 rebounds, 1,709 assists and 61 games, 2,400 seconds will decide the fate of two teams with a combined 22 UAAP seniors titles to determine one champion. A mouthful, eh? In a nutshell, that’s Season 72, and all the hustle and bustle will come to a conclusion in a winner-take-all Game 3.

With just a solitary game left in the 2009 UAAP calendar, it wouldn’t hurt to dish out one last survival guide, or souvenir program, for both Blue and Red. So far, our Bucket List has held water. To recap:

1. The team that’s played like Far Eastern University in the Final Four has lost on both occasions. In Game 1, UE looked tentative offensively and settled for those outside shots. Its patented dribble penetrations were absent. Last Sunday, Ateneo was reduced by that stifling Warrior zone defense to a jump-shooting team. The entry pass to the post was as difficult for the Blue Eagles to execute as getting Allen Iverson to attend practice.

2. The unit that has held its opponent to a sub-par shooting performance has won both games. Ateneo held UE to just 34.2 percent shooting from the field in Game 1. Coach Lawrence Chongson’s unit then returned the favor in Game 2, limiting the Blue Eagles to 34.7 percent.

3. The five that’s taken the better shots, and more accurately at that, has won every game. The defending champions hit 42.4 percent of their attempts in Game 1, while UE rattled in a torrid 51.1 percent in the next game. Beyond the numbers, the Blue Eagles, in Game 2, looked as if they’d have a difficult time guarding a chair.

4. The better rebounding unit hasn’t lost. Ateneo had the edge, 50-42 in Game 1 while UE won the battle of the boards in Game 2, 41-33.

Decisive knockout games, however, entail that unique, extra hit. Both schools have given us some hints as to what that final blow looks like, or, conversely, how they’ll fold when that lethal strike hits them.

Ateneo’s final blow: More fluid ball movement. By all accounts, Chongson will live and die with a zone since his wards give up a few inches with a man-to-man. So far, and especially in Game 2, the Blue and White’s ball rotation has been dismal.

In general, teams play zone defense to 1) prevent the opponent from passing the ball inside; and 2) force that opponent to hoist up outside shots. And guess what? Ateneo has fallen for both so far. A case in point: In Game 2, UE had Ateneo on the ropes, but only by a manageable 10 points after three quarters. Instead of even trying to establish Rabeh Al-Hussaini on the post, the Blue Eagles took higher percentage shots [i.e. outside shots = greater chance of missing]. In fact, the 2008 Most Valuable Player had just seven touches of the ball in the final period. Yes, seven, and that’s already including possessions after offensive rebounds. In those seven touches, Al-Hussaini got the ball in the post only twice, and did not back down to make a move on both occasions. And, the 6-foot-7 stalwart only sat down with a little more than a minute left in that period.

Granted, UE’s zone is making Al-Hussaini look like Toni Kukoc of Chicago Bulls fame. But that shouldn’t stop coach Norman Black’s squad from setting him up. Should that prove really difficult, the next best thing would be to move the ball around at a faster pace. One of the best weapons against a zone defense is crisp passing. Sound ball movement forces defenders on a zone to move more. And, in the words of RP Developmental Team assistant coach and good friend Jude Roque, “someone’s bound to be left open when you play zone.”

UE’s final blow: Discipline on both ends. Chongson’s free-flowing offense gives his players a lot of freedom to decide what to do, and how to do it. The result: UE has turned the ball over a combined 22 times in the two games played. That figure is superb, but has to be maintained if the repeat-seekers are to be defeated.

On defense, some trouble spots have already emerged. In the first half of Game 2, UE’s perimeter players left a lot of shooters open. Luckily for them, Ateneo couldn’t buy a basket. But don’t expect that to continue in Game 3; brace for the worst-case. Jai Reyes was able to light up the basket in Game 1 precisely because UE’s zone was careless at times. And in those little times [since Chongson has had that defense working wonders for the most part], Ateneo has capitalized.

Of course, the intangibles are not to be discounted. Momentum, the will to win and nerves of steel are just as important. UE looks to have all that at the moment, but Ateneo did own those things just three days before. That’s how fast things change in the game of basketball, and how small the margin for error is.

Madonna and Justin Timberlake once sang that there are four minutes to save the world. Both Ateneo and UE will have a little more time to save themselves. They’ll have 40 minutes.

    Nice post Christian!

Spot on analysis. It was a combination of red hot shooting and ice cold shooting (good defense by UE but some of those threes were wide open) contributed to the 20 point blowout. Good job by UE for Game 2

I agree with you about Rabeh’s touches. The top two ADMU scorers after 3 periods were Baclao and Rabeh. Ten points is nothing insurmountable in college ball. Instead, the Eagles attempt to shoot three’s early in the 4th. Give the ball to the big man, he was the MVP for some reason.

UE did do a good job defending the entry pass though, and ADMU was getting open looks. We’ll never know why. That’s the reason why we’re in the stands, and the coaches and players are on the court.

Best of luck to both teams on Thursday! Whether the Warrior stands triumphant or the Eagle flies high, one thing is for certain. IT WILL BE ONE HELLUVA GAME!

    ONE BIG FIGHT!

  • Go Ateneo! says:

Thanks for the detailed analysis Christian, this made me understand the events earlier even better. UE indeed played a hell of a game earlier, Ateneo couldn’t keep up. Defense and heart indeed win games, and UE showed both in game 2. I’m still hoping for the best though on Thursday. May the better team win. One Big Fight! We believe!

  • sportsfollower says:

Ateneo just lost focus. Hubris defeated the blue eagles that game. I somehow felt they were going to lose after seeing them wearing those T-shirts with a Back2Back sign during the warm-ups. Celebrating early are you? Kudos to UE for playing superb team ball.

  • dn41 says:

Ryan Buenafe will never be a star in the UAAP if he can’t make the outside shots. It sucks to see him shoot blanks in Game 2.. He just know how to drive and hang. That’s just for the top plays, not the top players.. Paul Lee can do those things too. ANd he can shoot from the three very well..

  • LJA says:

    sportsfollow,

I think it was “Back to Black” with “24″ (norman black’s number) at the back. Wearing those t-shirts only put more pressure on themselves. Now all the pressure in the world is on ateneo not to make a repeat of 2006 debacle.

UE played fearless and inspired team basketball. They also got lucky their big men llagas and espiritu was able hit those treys.

  • BLACK TO BLACK says:

This will be the color of ATENEO if they did not achieve
    their goal on THURSDAY..

  • ggginobili says:

A comment on ateneo’s 3pt shooting woes on game 2. I think it’s not all because of luck that ateneo couldn’t get their treys to drop. Another big factor for the shooting slump is the soft press UE has been employing the whole game, the ADMU guards were left with weary legs for their open shots, even for designated shooters (Eman, Jai, and Salamat). I’m sure coach Norman would instruct and challenge his boys to be ready to knock down more open treys for game 3.

  • GREENPUMARENRED says:

I have a hunch it’s choking time once again. Not for UE but for ADMU. Hubris=Debacle. UE has been suffering in silence since 2007, always choked by drought and less thirstier teams. I’d like to think they’ll be extra careful this time, but they should avoid the law of averages catching up after an overdone game.

Bouncing back, expect ADMU to do just that with a final ripping claw, but then, pressure is rising up their necks right now I’m sure. From No. 1, they’re now 50-50 make or break, and they haven’t felt that way for a long while.

UE has nicely peaked and it’s now or never (again). They have nothing to lose, but everything to be sorry for if they throw this one.

    But I’d lke to think,even wishfully………….it’s UE’s time!

Finally, after what, 8 days, nakapag internet din ako!
Hehehe. Nakabangon kami after the typhoon Ondoy. Hopefully the Blue Eagles too, and also my neighbors who lost almost all their properties, rise up from the grave of challenge and Successfully win.

  • Simple lang says:

Simple lang ang analysis. They wanted a Game 3 to push the financial rewards for everyone, UAAP included. Ateneo played very questionable offense and defense. First of all, it was a close 1st half. It wasn’t as if Ateneo was gone from the first minute of playing time. The questionable playing came in the 2nd half. Let’s assume ALL the players had an off-day (which is unlikely); why then did they go with shooting trey’s when none of these were going in and, obviously, none of them were hot (or at least, that’s what it appeared to be). They should have driven in to draw fouls from UE at the very least AND go for the lower percentage lay-ups or shots from inside the paint.

On the defense, all throughout the second half, Ateneo did NOT press! Tambak na ng UE by 10, 15, 17 points and yet, they chose to wait patiently for UE to bring up the ball leisurely and simply wait for UE to drive. There was NO press AT ALL! From the supposed TOP defense team, this was very questionable. Ateneo only pressed at 1 minute 30 seconds remaining in the 4th Quarter!

At critical junctures in the game, when UE was on a scoring run, Ateneo also DID NOT call timeouts to stop the momentum! Questionable!

All just to have a 3rd and final game to boost gate receipts for UAAP and all schools.

    Simple lang.

  • redcard says:

kasama rin ba sa plano ung kay dick at rabeh?

  • ggginobili says:

I beg to differ. I think it’s not that simple to ask ateneo to press UE when they were down in the middle of the second half.

First, UE had several quick point guards on the floor to attack an ateneo press (2, at times 3).

Second, ateneo was not making shots, giving them less opportunity to press.

Third, I think ateneo would rather slow the game down instead of employ a press because they’re a half-court-setup team with a formidable post-up guy. Plud rmploying an ateneo press during the middle of the game could favor to UE’s preferred tempo because it allows open court attacks.

  • bball fan says:

    UE keys to win:

    - Use your hunger! It’s been a long time since you last won and it was also ADMU ho foiled your last crack at the championship during the days of Caidic and Condinera

    - Play honest D on ADMU shooters. You cannot leave Reyes and Salamat alone. Jai is even more dangerous on crucial moments so you cannot give him an inch of opening or else he’ll burn. As bad as Salamat has played you cannot take him for granted as he is just as capable of taking over. If he’s in a slump, all the more you should frustrate him. Keep him unproductive if you want to win. Same thing with Monfort, give him the same respect as you would Reyes.

    - For your bigs – keep up the good work on neutralizing Al Husseini and Baclao with Espiritu and Llagas. If the 4 will produce equal output but the UE guards would outscore the ADMU guards then the championship is yours for the taking

    - Lee factor. This is your time to shine dude. If you want to be considered to be a big time player then this is your stage to prove yourself. I heard Smart Gilas is courting you to join the national. Show them you deserve to be in it.

  • RuckuS says:

Ateneo will be back. Im sure the Eagles received a good tongue lashing from Norman Black, and will come out focused on thursday to finish the series. Teams will always have an “OFF” Day, too bad for them it happened during the finals, but knowing this team, and Norman Black, they’re not the type who will make the same mistakes again. It will be a game of adjustments, the team that makes the better ones will be going home with the bigger trophy on thursday.

    ONE BIG FIGHT!

  • ravena v elorde says:

i think the juniors game was more exciting than srs game 2. just an opinion.

  • lea says:

    @simple lang
I think it’s not fair to either school to insinuate the whole ateneo team threw the game. UE played extremely well they were hot. Rabeh was not focused and the Ateneo team lost its confidence. Salamat on the other hand is either throwing his game or a choker who disappears in the most crucial time ( I don’t know which is worst) The bigs of UE just exposed the weakness of the bigs of Ateneo they can’t defend the perimeter or even the high post

  • lea says:

Ateneo should give up on Eric put in Nico or Sumalinog as 3 and then Kirk or Bacon at 2 so that when the 2 bigs of UE draw the bigs of Ateneo then they can contest the rebounds of the guards and wings. Bacon can rebound at the post better because he was a 4 during high school. Ateneo should also be a bit more flexible when Chongson does unexpected stuff

  • marcism_1970 says:

It was too good to see UE winning Game 2 of the UAAP Finals yesterday! It was too good, although I did root for the Blue Eagles to win all the way! Hehe, sounds ironic bro? Yes, i even celebrated with UE’s win, on TV of course, because I felt they deserved to win that game. They worked hard, from start to finish, and showed that they were the better players on court, that they were the better team that day. Luck also smiled at them, and maybe, just maybe, on Thursday – luck would remain to be their friend!
I am not a believer of the allegation (some mentioned this here) that some White and Blue players threw the game away just for gate receipts, among other reasons, for that’s pathetic anyway – a Catholic and Jesuit school could not just game-fix just for some financial reward – “barya barya lang ‘yang gate receipts na ‘yan” compared to the pride that each Atenista feels or possesses. There’s more to life than revenues… That’s why I don’t personally buy the idea that the Blue Eagles and the rest of the community that supports them are morons and idiots to just throw a game away and then experience the agony of defeat that they are suffering even until today!
I saw, however, another reason/s why the Blue Eagles collapsed yesterday: 1. Overconfidence – they underestimate the capabilities of the Red Warriors whose swagger was tamed by the almost-flawless executions of the Blue Eagles during game 1. History was not at the UE’s side, even the sports columnists, the tv commentators and even my beer buddy acknowledged that! History was not at UE’s side but stayed neutral at the heat of the game during that game. 2. Boomeerang of the ‘win-it-all’ mentality. I am upset and disturbed by the Blue Eagles’ wearing of shirt with “back-to-back” assertions on it during warm-ups? That was plain stupidity, idiotic and uncharacteristically Ateneo! Forrest Gump was indeed right when he said that ‘stupid is what stupid does!’ The one who conceptualized it was as ignorant as those who took the Red Warriors for granted! “It ain’t over ’til it’s over.” Sounds like ‘bilog ang bola bro’ is a thing to be learned here.
    3. Nothing to lose – everything to gain. We have heard how the basketball community frowned at LC (head coach) free-flowing-fun-filled system – totally different from that of DP (former coach) by-the-book and disciplined system – and how he won our hearts that basketball indeed, and all games for that matter, is about adjustments! The Red Warriors are fast learners, and even hungrier to win! 4. Ateneo lost its composure – under pressure! “Every dog has its day” did come true yesterday! Did you notice how Eman shoved a Red Warrior after he fell from a faked jumper? It was never necessary – it was uncalled for – and it was uncharacteristically Ateneo! Have you noticed, ever since last year when he picked up his game, on how often it is seen on TV as you lip-read Rabeh’s word after a foul or a shove or a high pick slay saying: “p’t_ng ina?” Do you think that’s cute? Indeed, Hinduism’s karma is at work here. 5. Nobody‘s Unbeatable! Even the Chicago Bulls of the 90′s that won 72-10 stumbled along the way – else, they must have won the entire 82 games, which is practically impossible in a game of basketball! 6. Ateneo forgot that they are the defending Champions! Remember the words of Houston Rockets’ coach Rudy Tomjanovich: “Don’t ever underestimate the hearts of the champion?” UE saw that the Blue Eagles’ confidence was a bit slimy and it was flickering – so they took clue from it, jumped at it, and, as most bloggers called it, “sinapian ng demonyo” when they played the game. It was not demonyo, it was borne out of UE’s desire and the will to win. And it was angelic.
So, may the best team win? I’ll drink to that. Although I’ll still stick with the Blue Eagles to be champions but I’ll salute the team that shows character. In the words of my drinking buddy: “Game lang naman iyan – kaya isports lang…”
The biggest stage for collegiate basketball is all set on Thursday… and character shall be revealed.

  • The Early Bird says:

To the UE fans who feel that the Ateneans are manipulating ticket sales, think again.

The key to getting tickets and goods seats is to arrive early!

The ticket allocations are the same for both schools. However, Araneta sells SRO tickets on the day itself. In reality, getting these tickets don’t mean that you are going to stand for the duration of the game because Upper A and B do not have reserved seating. So as long as you are early, even if you get an SRO ticket, you have a pretty good chance of getting a seat.

While it is true that there is a UE side and Ateneo side in the Lower Box and Patron areas, such is not the case in Upper A and B. Upper A and B are free-seating areas. This means that you can sit anywhere you want.

It is illogical for someone to choose to stand when there are other seats available; it doesn’t matter if it on the “UE side”.

So to the whiners out there, just come early to end your endless ranting about the ticket allocations. That should solve the problem.

  • East side says:

everytime i see Jai or Rabeh shoots the ball, its an automatic score. UE contained Rabeh by imposing Llagas, Duran and Tagarda on him. UE just need to play better defense against Jai. Monfort is stepping us so better look after him too.

Questionable is Eric Salamat. Kala ko pa naman Lee vs Salamat tong series na to…

Rebound + Accurate shots + Solid zone defense

  • UE Boy says:

    To Simple Lang:

Is it easy to shoot Four 3-pointers? (Like what E. Espiritu did)

Is it easy for P. Llagas to come up with a booming triple in the face of R. Al-Hussaini at a very crucial part of the game?

If you think that this game and league is just made to generate money, then don’t watch anymore.

If Ateneo won despite all of your “questionables”, would you still say that?!

MAS SIMPLE TO: NANALO ANG UE, NATALO ANG ADMU.

    OK?

ITS SO UNFAIR TALAGA, AND IT PISSES ME SO MUCH!!!

  • marcism_1970 says:

    Oppsie, hinay-hinay lang Bro.

Tickets are distributed evenly to both schools without discrimination as to who has the bigger employees, enrolees, followers or how much a parent pays the school for a baccalaureate degree.

The remaining tickets are available at the gates on a first-come-first-served basis… Kaya nga pumipila kami ng napakaaga amidst rain, pagod, bagot, inip, paninigas ng binti sa katatayo and the likes… But it’s worth it, di ba: “the early bird catches the worm?”

For school tickets, it is the discretion of the school management as to whom they shall give these: the administrators, management, faculty members, the alumni, the pep squad and the cheering team, the students and other stakeholders of the school.

If it pisses you much that you haven’t received any ticket, it is just but proper to ask the higher authorities of your school where these tickets are and how or how much you can have a bite of it.

Now, if you’re whining that you’ve no ticket at all, don’t blame or pinpoint your finger at other school for we also experience the same… It’s just a matter of being professional, as student or alumni of your school. Instead of blaming the other bench, start blogging for a ticket, triple the price or more, else, the game is shown LIVE on Studio 23.

You see, you still can properly express your frustrations, but not necessarily slight others who are able to keep their temper on check.

No ticket? Let’s have beer and enjoy the play, blow by blow, although sa TV nga lang…

yeah i’m an atenean.. yup i do believe salamat and buenafe passed ACET.. instead of you insinuating that they didn’t pass or ateneo doctored the results of their exams, why don’t you try to prove that yourself? provide evidence.. if it’s true they had bad grades in high school, they probably did well in ACET.. yes you’re right high school grades are important but not the only deciding factors of being accepted in ateneo..
