The Ateneo Blue Eagles took Game 1 of the UAAP Season 72 Best of Three Finals series with a 78-71 win over the UE Red Warriors on October 1, 2009 at the Araneta Coliseum.  Ateneo in the process snapped UEs 8-game winning streak.

Rabeh Al-Hussaini and Jai Reyes exploded for 8-points and 6-points respectively in the 4th Quarter to counter the Red Warriors’ end game surge.

Jai Reyes converted 5 of Ateneo’s 6 3-point shots in the 2nd half, is playing his final year for the reigning UAAP Champions.

After a 24-11 Ateneo lead to end the 1st Quarter, the Red Warriors ignited a 19-1 tear in the 2nd quarter to finish the 1st half with a one point UE lead 35-34. Rudy Lingganay led the blitz for UE with 9-points in the 2nd period.  Ateneo’s biggest lead of the game stood at 16-points, 31-15 a little over 6 minutes before the end of the 1st half.

The Red Warriors were able to close in on the Blue Eagles by cutting their deficit down to just 4-points, 75-71 with 52 seconds remaining in the final quarter after a three-pointer from Val Acuna.

First UAAP Season Head Coach Lawrence Chongson, who absorbed his first loss in the Finals said, “We came here not to challenge them but to win. It’s disappointing. They made big shots when it mattered, and we had difficulty in matching up with their size”.

“Even with today’s loss, we can now say we can compete with a tall team like Ateneo. The downside for us is that we tend to be tentative at times. Even if we knew the Rabeh Al Hussaini will eventually get his numbers, we did not make the necessary adjustments”, Coach Chongson added.

Rabeh Al-Hussaini, also playing his final year with the Blue Eagles, scored 28 points- the 3rd highest scoring output in the Finals series since 2005  added 14 rebounds and 2 Assists.   Jai Reyes had 17 points and 5 rebounds with 4 assists.
Paul Lee led UE with 15 points and 8 rebounds with Pari Llagas adding 13 points. Val Acuna had a double-double performance for the Red Warriors with 13 points and 11 rebounds to his credit.

“During halftime, I encouraged them that we are still in the game. Its a big game for Jai especially his outside shooting, considering his experience (being trapped in their home during Typhoon Ondoy). We expect UE to bounce back on Sunday but we will also make the necessary adjustments”, said Ateneo Head Coach Norman Black.

ATENEO 78 – Al Hussaini 28, Reyes 17,  Salva 8, Buenafe 6, Austria 6, Long 3, Baclao 3, Salamat 2, Chua 2, Sumalinog 0, Monfort 0.

  • warrior says:

panalo referee! it’s hard to beat ateneo with their 5 player plus 3 referees plus crOwd.. XP

  • WARRIOR@WORK says:

    Nice ateneo…

    -Defense will let you win,

    “faith for fate”

    God Blesses UE Red Warriors….

–limited ang turnovers, high percentage shot ung mga tira, less fouls and team work talaga.

  • poblang_fine_arts says:

    ue in 3

  • redcard says:

guys wala na sanang baseless accusations and bashings.

  • WARRIOR@WORK says:

UE for game 2 and game 3.

  • chamba? Oh whatever, you just hate it cuz you effin lose.

Galing kaya ng Eagles kanina. Kahit mdyo thmk si
Eric at Noy, nagstep-up si Jai with 5 triples and a 2pt. and Rabeh showed why he was the MVP last yr.

Nico Salva is back on the game.

Love it or Hate it.. ATENEO WINS (BIG TIME). XP

  • alf says:

    @paul lee and Blue Dude

Actually, ang nakatsamba ay ang UE:

1.) There was no other choice, wala si Barroca ng FEU, mahina ang lasalle. Chamba ang abot nila sa finals.

2.) Sa 2nd quarter comeback nila, nakakachamba ng steals and shots Lingganay.

Sunday ba? Back to back na.

UE may want it more, but hunger cannot beat pure talent.

  • John Semper says:

it’s going to be a sweep, plain and simple. ue simply cannot match up with the taller and more disciplined ateneo players. the only reason why the red warriors had a fighting chance today was because the blue eagles played very carelessly at times. the season ends this sunday

  • warrior says:

yah..nanalo nga admu with referees help..thanks kau sa referees! yey..!

  • spirit says:

UE can still beat ateneo,IF they can stop rabeh!congrats to the ateneo team

  • Blubber says:

WALA NAMAN PALA YUNG SO CALLED “DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR NIYO” SA SIXTH MAN OF THE YEAR EH. NAUUTO! DAPAT SI BACLAO ANG NANALO NIYAN, WALA NAMAN SA PURE STATS YAN.

  • BlueDude says:

    @ alf

Dude I was being sarcastic. It pisses me off that others think that their team is so damn good that they can only be beaten if their opponents cheat or as they say, “nakatsamba lang.” Both teams played their hearts out today but of course, only one will emerge as the victor. It was a well-fought game and it really is insulting for the players and for the avid fans of the game whenever other people tarnish an otherwise great game with BASELESS accusations of cheating, etc.

  • taeneo says:

UE has to stop rabeh(mukang mabaho) at all cost.to the UE fans, you know the refs, nababayaran mga yan.wala ksi kayong pambayad ha ha ha

  • Shandy^^^ says:

    Congratulations ATENEO!

    Great Game!

    God Bless!

    GO Jai! idol tika :)

  • .o A+M+D+G o. says:

Galing talaga ni Paul Lee. Pero when Rabeh is on fire and keeps his cool, man, no one can stop him.

Attention Ateneans! Let’s show our full force this Sunday in Araneta and support our beloved eagles. For Rabeh, Nonoy and Jai!

    Sobrang sarap talaga maging Atenista!

  • Deep Blue says:

Exciting game! The Red Warriors deserve to be in the finals by engaging Ateneo in a tight battle. The blowout wins of Ateneo in the elims clearly do not matter now. It’s who wants it the most and who has the poise in the clutch.

    @paul lee:

Before you call Ateneo chambero, look at the stats of the game. UE shot only 27% from the 3pt line. Ateneo shot 42% of its 3s. The 3 has been UE’s main weapon for many years now. Ateneo’s on-the-ball man2man defense is best in the league. Nuff said!

Mga atenista pa pumalakpak sa team nila when the school hymn was sung why?

SUS!

Nabasa ko na din ito buong week na UE will win game 1 well keep on wishing til game 2 then…

REALITY HAPPENS – ATENEO BACK TO BACK

  • ravena says:

  • wewe says:

maybe ateneo and lasalle should split from the uaap and make a league of their own and call it laaap (la salle ateneo athletic association of the phils) anyway nmn most of media exposure is on them and hell they get like 99.99% of the tickets ( see: ust vs ateneo finals , feu vs la salle- you get the picture) whahahaha

ateneo in 3 games- unless the warriors chain rabeh to a rock or something

    go uste!

  • firstofaugust says:

let us just wait and see…

it’s not over until it’s over!

    wag magsalita ng tapos…

if ateneo would win the next game, then so be it.

    that’s all.

    period.

    if not..

then let’s watch the game 3.

    okay?

  • ONEBIGFIGHT!!! says:

napansin ko lang kanina .. nung nanood ako ..

pag sa UE wala lang ..

mukang my bayaran na ngaganap ..

  • UE in Ateneo's Bonfire says:

Brace yourselves, UE. Your names will be in our bonfire this year! Hahahahaha!

  • tama ka wewe says:

tama ka jan wewe, media kanila kc

  • BLUEGREEN says:

    @WALA NG TICKET??

apparently those who bought tickets who intended to watch the game last sunday wasn’t able to come today. case in point, i had to make a lame excuse for an afternoon off in the office. too bad for those who coudn’t afford to take a leave or those who were affected by the floods who had tickets but wasn’t able to watch. just be thankful you were able to get a seat.

i can smell a lot of bitter warriors and non-warriors alike who wanted the eagles down. u can stay bitter or move on and look forward to game 2.

winners know how to accept defeat… best of luck on game 2 for both teams!

I like how paul lee, pari llagas and espiritu when they play other teams. not this time, though.

one last BIG FLIGHT BLUE EAGLES!

  • Die UE and La Salle! says:

UE should die in the flood along with La Salle. Only Ateneans deserve to live!

  • ADMU/ABS-CBN MEDIA PARTNER says:
