UE pulls off double over FEU, punches finals ticket

THE EAST has a winner, and its color is red.
Third-seeded University of the East bucked all the odds and set up a date with destiny in Season 72 of the UAAP Finals by beating Far Eastern University, 78-72 last September 24 in a winner-take-all, Final Four matchup at the Araneta Coliseum.
Coming off an MVP-like performance in both teams’ showdown last Saturday, Paul Lee was better than advertised as he came up huge in the clutch to help the erstwhile hardluck Red Warriors overcome a twice-to-beat disadvantage against the Tamaraws. He scored 17 points to follow up on a stirring 26-point performance in Game 1 as the Recto five capitalized on a careless FEU lineup in the second half.
FEU was very much in control in the first half and led by as many as 12, 27-15, in the first period. UE, using a balanced attack, launched their own 12-0 run that forced a 27-all deadlock. UE chopped down the Tamaraw advantage in the third quarter, and put itself in a position to win after trailing by just three heading into the payoff period.
JR Cawaling and Pipo Noundou, after leading for the Tamaraws with 17 and 14 points respectively at the half, were silenced in the next 20 minutes of action, scoring just two markers apiece in that stretch. The last deadlock of the game was at 70-all at the 4:41 mark. UE big man Pari Llagas then gave his squad a 72-70 lead before Reil Cervantes incurred an unsportsmanlike foul for elbowing Lee while jockeying for position in the key with 3:37 remaining. That gave Lee a trip to the free throw line, one he took advantage of by canning both freebies to stretch the UE lead to four. The Tams, missing the steady presence of Andy Barroca, failed to execute in crunch time as UE proved the more poised of the two squads.
FEU, which shot 48 percent in the first half while committing only two turnovers, committed eight more errors in the third and fourth quarters while shooting a lowly 29 percent. Coach Glenn Capacio’s troops also failed to capitalize on their 49-38 rebounding edge. Their sloppy second half play paled in comparison with UE’s smooth attack, which yielded just seven turnovers, the lowest since Ateneo’s six errors against UE on September 9, 2006, a game UE won, 78-75.
Pari Llagas dished out another double-double performance of 16 points and 11 boards while Val Acuña tallied 17 points to lead UE along with Lee. Cawaling and Noundou scored 19 and 16 markers, respectively, for the second-seeded Morayta outfit.
Capacio said, “It’s painful. [They] really hustled and gave their best but I still want to congratulate my team because they still played with heart and with passion. We just had problems with our rotation and I guess in every member of this team, frustration worked its way into us. Lee created major dilemmas for us that we could solve. I guess that’s the story, we did our best. We fought until the end.â€
Chongson, for his part, said, “I’ll be honest. I’ll be humble with you guys, from the start I hardly got any respect, even if we’re in the finals now. I don’t think I could change the mindset of the people [towards] me. It’s just me, my team and the fans. I just told the team during halftime that this is it, this is the game of our lives. There’s no more tomorrow. I even asked the veterans if they wanted this to be their last game. For us, we just believed in our gameplan. We had lapses on our defense in the first half, it was ridiculous [after allowing 51 points]. Also on defense, some say it’s a system without a system but it’s all good as long as the will to win is there and we take home the win. Hopefully, we’d still have that talent [when we face Ateneo]. We hardly have time to breathe as we already start another series on Sunday. It all boils down to this, from day one, for the team, all we ever wanted is the championship. We have to thank the believers and the supporters for the undying faith they had that helped us reach where we are now.â€
UE’s last championship title came 24 years ago in 1985. This is its fifth championship appearance since 1986, and first since enduring a sweep in 2007 at the hands of De La Salle.
Lee, the star of the show, said, “Our hard work paid off finally. The curse is broken. I may have had a sloppy start but I’m thankful my game peaked at the right time, when the team needed it the most. Acuña added, “Our coaches just tell us to play like there’s no tomorrow. And with all this, we were able to surpass this stage with God’s help. Now, we’ll have to prepare for an intense series, just never lose focus and continue to play hard and with passion.â€
The best-of-three Finals between the Ateneo Blue Eagles and the UE Red Warriors kick off this Sunday, September 27 at 3:30 p.m., also at the Araneta Coliseum.
The scores:
UE 78 – Lee 17, Acuña 17, Llagas 16, Lingganay 15, Espiritu 6, Bandaying 5, Acibar 2, Zamar 0, Tagarda 0, Reyes 0, Ayala 0.
FEU 72 – Cawaling 19, Noundou 16, Garcia 13, Cervantes 12, Ramos 10, Sanga 2, Tanuan 0, Manalo 0, Eguilos 0, Caluag 0.
Quarter scores: 19-27, 45-51, 61-64, 78-72.

Defense!
Defense!
Defense!
Nice UE…
Praktis more defense guyz.
Congratz UE Red Warriors….
Kaya nyo yan sa Finals…. more defense pa for Ateneo.
Mas magandang offense and Defense and magpapanalo sa inyo sa Finals…
“walang bibitaw Warriors, Believe lang sa bawat shots na itetake, then faith to God and heart for the games.
Guyz this is it!
***
sana mag step up on sunday sila Zamar, reyes, bandaying.
maging consistent ung game ni paul, pari, lingganay at val.
ok ung defense ni elmer sana mag focus sya dun sa defense then kung open gumawa ng field goal, wag i force ang shots.
”’
Pray hard…
have heart..
have faith..

magandang offense from paul at smart assists
maging consistent c lingganay
magandang offense from the bench like, zamar, reyes, bandaying, ayala and tagarda.

easier said than done…haha
but i agree defense is the key..pari llagas should contain rabeh at all cost
raphy reyes would probably be guarding jai the whole time..it’s a reyes vs reyes competition
it will be an aerial battle between baclao and espiritu..
and will buenafe write his name on the list of stars of uaap or can val acuña leave a big statement..val acuña should really give it all in order to be scouted by pro teams..baka sakali
nico salva is ateneo’s edge..if guys like acibar and ayala contribute minutes to stop this guy..it would be a fair match
SALAMAT (on defense) vs LEE (on offense)
the better player will lift his school to the top..hehe
D ako nakakatulog ng maaga sa kakaisip ng uaap finals..haha..i’l watch game 2..i need tickets..spare me some haha

once in a ‘blue moon’ opportunity lang ito – to be in the finals – amidst disbelief and disrespect of the system the new coach had introduced… No team is unbeatable, even the historic 1996 Bulls that won 72 was beaten 10 times…
You just have to believe that you can win, execute as you play smart… Go, Warriors!

My hats off to the gutsy UE Red Warriors! To overcome a twice to beat disadvantage against supposedly the pre-season favorite to win this year’s championship is indeed a great feat. You have shown that anything is possible when you put your hearts and minds into it. When I read in the newspaper that the Red Warriors had some sort of a team building session somewhere before the Final Four, I really thought the team is dead serious in its intention to finally nail the championship that has eluded us for more than two decades already. And UE’s return trip to the finals is the culmination of it. When before, the team will just fold up during crunch time because they can’t handle the pressure, this 2009 Warriors team displayed nerves of steel and came up with big plays one after the other during those crucial moments. UE is definitely the underdogs when they go up against the Eagles owing to their 0-2 record head-to-head but those twin defeats will serve as their driving force to exact payback. UE was in control during their first meeting and even led by as much as 18pts but just couldn’t hang on to it in the second half. Their second match was a close one, with UE charging back late in the game but just losing steam. And with Pari Llagas serving a one-game suspension, UE was a lot more vulnerable inside, losing someone who can bang bodies with Rabeh Al-Hussaini. This series will be an entirely different ball game. I believe that if UE stays hot from the outside and neutralize Ateneo’s big men, we have a great chance to win it all. The team’s chemistry is unquestionable and everyone is willing to give it his all. Thank you, Coach Lawrence for harnessing the team’s full potential. I really believe you are the missing puzzle to our dream of finally ending our title drought. Is it beginner’s luck? I don’t think so. To all UE alumni, please support our team tomorrow. This is our time. Play hard and pray harder! Go fight, Red Warriors!

@uaap boy
hmmm
Arvie Bringas, Staglet – Archer
Jay R Reyes, Letran Squires – UP Maroons
JC Intal is also a Squire – Eagles

GET REAL
UAAP 72
Basketball fans got a reprieve today from Ondoy as they indulged in game 1 of the 72nd UAAP finals. The worst calamity in forty years exposed the bleak situation for the majority of this country’s population and just as importantly, uncovered how greed and corruption has blanketed our culture for decades. My statement, more than a direct affront to the UE team and the merit by which they acquired a spot in the finals, are also a testament of understated facts that attack the corrupt.
What all the media constantly failed to report on, or perhaps what the media have purposely masked, is the uncannily obtuse resolve of the officiating team that has thwarted the sincere efforts of unsuspecting participants in this beloved tournament. For instance, Dylan Ababou of UST was caught twice of striking an opponent with a closed fist, an offense that always carried a mandatory suspension. Fortunately, Joe Lipa with the absolute power that he wielded in the UAAP, thought that Ababou should be meted a lesser punishment because unlike normal humans, Joe Lipa could see the intentions of people and thus, he determined that Ababou did not mean to throw punches even if he did. Any of those infractions would have eliminated Ababou from the MVP race which he eventually won. Poetic justice indeed.
In the case of the deciding game between UE and FEU, the referees together with Mr. Lipa not only played dumb but unreservedly held courage to stand up for everything that was wrong. Criminal mentality could not have been exemplified any better. 25 free throws were granted to the UE team at the expense of FEU’s zone defense. 25 free throws against a zone defense? Allow me to elucidate. That meant that every time Paul Lee or any UE player so much as farted on the floor, the referees experienced a concurrent orgasm and rewarded them by calling a foul and by granting free throws. In retrospect, UE was called for one foul in the third quarter! And I can be wrong, but they did get a FEW other fouls throughout the game.
In the 4th quarter, a blatant foul by Rafy Reyes on an all alone reverse lay-up by Aldrech Ramos happened in front of three officials, five if you count Joe Lipa and one more referee sitting beside him (it did happen on their side of the court) yet nobody seemed to care. Ramos’ hand was just above the rim as Reyes clambered on his elbow, causing the ball to fly out of his grip. Due to the contact, the 5′8″ Reyes ended up with the ball against the 6′6″ Ramos. FEU will lead by 10, referees make sure the pitiful UE squad catch up by any means necessary. This has been the trend throughout the game so much so that even the most seasoned basketball fans have by this time, grown numb to the referees’ non-calls against UE.
Deeper into the fourth, inside the two minute mark to be exact, Aldrech Ramos succeeded in a crucial, hard fought lay-up only for the ball to be swatted illegally by UE’s Espiritu. Normally, the basket would have counted and the play ruled a goal tending since the ball already touched the backboard. So with six eyes watching in close proximity (ten if you count Joe Lipa and the other monkey sitting beside him), did the referees call it right this time? Not in several lifetimes. Not a chance in Hell because as you might have guessed, they already pawned their souls to Satan himself. Not many people know this, but in fairness to Joe Lipa with close to 90 years of dog wisdom to speak for, he did manage to offer a justification. The ball would not have gone into the hoop anyway, he surmised after watching it in slow motion. Yes, the ball touched the glass before the block and therefore it should have counted for FEU but lest we forget who reigns supreme in the UAAP world. For what their collective souls were worth, Joe Lipa, the top official that he is, looked down to his shoes for guidance and pronounced that it was indeed a clean block. Munificence before conscience, he muttered under his breath.
Just as surely as the devil is bound to fail in the end, his beneficiaries must recognize their fate. Boisterous and proud as UE was, it was only a matter of days before karma smacked them in the forehead as karma indefatigably does when it is time to collect. UE should have stayed humble upon realizing from dvd reviews that they were given a free pass to the finals by the mafia betting gods by way of the shrewd referees. Instead, they claimed the victory as if it was theirs to behold. 18 free points (out of the 25 foul and penalty shots) handed maliciously to your team and not an iota of humility could be found. As sure as the creamy mud left by Ondoy is unpalatable to swallow, UE’s questionable victory left an equally foul taste in the mouths of all those who have been disparaged.
The pertinent question to ask at this point is why do we allow corruption to overshadow the efforts of those who worked so hard to succeed? The circumstances are simple enough even for 5th graders to interject and propose effective solutions. The UAAP earns enough to hold its tournament at the Araneta Coliseum so why is it impossible to acquire the services of professional FIBA referees come tournament time? At the very least, for the final four games and the best of three finals?
To prevent collusion, a different group of international referees should be drawn randomly by representatives from each university for every game. They arrive, officiate and leave on the same day to ensure that no payoffs could be negotiated. As for the hopelessly corrupt local referees, they do not deserve to earn a living at the expense of honest victims. Let them starve together with all their benefactors and progeny because sadly, the fruits can never fall far from the tree most especially if the ground is muddy.

I think Ateneo woul have a hard time regaining its title this year. A very well matchup between the blue and red. Espiritu can guard Al-Hussaini, Jai can post for three if Rabeh fails to get an open look, Paul Lee vs. Eric Salamat for momentum starters. Who can overlook Pari Llagas, Nico Salva and R. Buenafe? Hunger to win vs. heart of a champion? Interesting indeed. I’ll surely watch the game on Thursday to see who’s gonna bring home the crown!c:
