Ateneo destroys UST, makes return Finals appearance

ATENEO de Manila University had just one thing in mind: to make sure it had the chance to defend its much-coveted title.
The Blue Eagles dismantled a reeling University of Sto. Tomas, 81-64 to punch the first ticket to the Finals of UAAP Season 72 last September 20 at the Araneta Coliseum and exact some measure of revenge for their championship debacle in 2006.
A focused Ateneo squad established itself quickly, creating a 22-16 edge at the end of the first 10 minutes of action. After UST guard Jeric Fortuna scored to open the second quarter, Ateneo blitzed its way to an 8-0 run that held Sto. Tomas scoreless up to the six-minute mark. Both teams exchanged runs, which resulted in a nine-point halftime bulge in favor of the Blue and White.
A third quarter assault by the defending champions, though, served as the killer blow. Ateneo outscored UST, 23-13 with Jai Reyes, Ryan Buenafe and Rabeh Al-Hussaini combining for 17 markers. As a team, the Eagles shot 71 percent in that 10-minute juncture while holding UST to below 30 percent. A Buenafe freebie gave the Blue Eagles their largest lead of the game at 23, 68-45 midway through the final quarter. UST found the lead insurmountable and finally bid farewell to its title aspirations with its fourth straight defeat overall..
“Hindi ko rin alam. Hindi kami makakuha. Good record eh [referring to a 13-1 record of ADMU]. Ayaw man namin, wala na kaming magagawa, kahit paano mayroon na ring record. Yung inexpect kong performance hindi ko nakuha eh, siguro si Dylan [Ababou] pagod na rin, kaya eto knockoutâ€, commented a downtrodden head coach Pido Jarencio, who steered UST to the title in his rookie season against Ateneo in 2006.
Both playing in their last year, newly-crowned league Most Valuable Player Dylan Ababou registered a game-high 19 points while Khasim Mirza tallied a double-double of 14 points and 11 boards. Jai Reyes, with 17 points, was the leading scorer for the Blue Eagles.
Ateneo now awaits the winner of the knockout game between Far Eastern University and University of the East on Thursday, September 24. “We will use the week to get a rest to get off to a fresh start, to heal the minor injuries of the players. The plan is to really get a good start, and hopefully clinch the back-to-back titles,†said Ateneo coach Norman Black.
Black’s troops held the league’s highest-scoring offense to just 64 points on a miserable 27.5 percent shooting clip and just three fastbreak points. In return, they established new Final Four records in fastbreak points [23] and steals [13].
The Blue Eagles last won back-to-back titles in 1987 and 1988. This marks their third back-to-back appearance in the finals since their entry into the league in 1978. Six years ago, Ateneo fell to FEU via a 2-0 sweep in the finals after upending De La Salle University for the title the season before.
The scores:
Ateneo 81 – Reyes 17, Buenafe 15, Al-Hussaini 14, Baclao 13, Salamat 6, Long 6, Chua 6, Sumalinog 2, Austria 2, Monfort 0, Gonzaga 0, Golla 0.
UST 64 – Ababou 19, Mirza 14, Teng 10, Bautista 9, Fortuna 7, Afuang 4, Camus 1, Maliksi 0, Aytona 0.
Quarter scores: 22-16, 40-31, 63-44, 81-64.

A Song For Mary
We stand on a hill
Between the earth and sky
Now all is still
Where Loyola’s colors fly
Our course is run
And the setting sun
Ends Ateneo’s day,
Eyes are dry at the last goodbye;
This is the Ateneo way.
Mary for you!
For your white and blue!
We pray you’ll keep us, Mary
Constantly true!
We pray you’ll keep us, Mary
Faithful to you!
Down from the hill,
Down to the world go I;
Rememb’ring still,
How the bright Blue Eagles fly.
Through joy and tears,
Through the laughing years,
We sing our battle song:
Win or lose,
It’s the school we choose;
This is the place where we belong!
Mary for you!
For your white and blue!
We pray you’ll keep us, Mary
Constantly true!
We pray you’ll keep us, Mary
Faithful to you!
Whow, four players in double digits!
Sayang, the record for the most lopsided victory in a Final Four game was 21 by the FEU Tamaraws (crushing the Red Warriors) in 2005.
Pero okay lang, a win is a win.
Congrats Blue Eagles, Back2Black indeed.
i just dont get it y pido allowed his players to take like 8 3-point attempts at the begining of the 1st qtr and not set up plays.
According to Jessica Mendoza’s report, the Ambassador, Manny V. Pangilinan and Chris Tiu all made pep talk to inspire the Blue Eagle team.
Grabeh, the team has it all, and more!
@ eastern_tigers
That was a very big gamble for pido.
Jeric Teng should be commended; he still excelled kahit puro Dylan Ababou plays ang alam ni Pido.
Sorry,
@eastern tiger pala.
Go Ateneo!
Balanced offense, tight defense, good teamwork. Keep it up. It looks like Buenafe has found his groove. I hope he continues his good play. Unfortunately, as much as Rabeh is a good player, poor basketball IQ. How can a pivotal player commit such a stupid foul, a techinical at that, and get his fourth around the 7 minute mark? Good thing it didn’t come back and bite him and the team in the ass.
Looking forward, who would be a better match-up? Is it the equally tall and deep FEU team or the streaking UE warriors? Food for thought.
Will the Growling Tigers Growling Tigers recruit an import? I’m pretty sure that the University and the Program are financially capable enough to recruit one. Maybe, just like some schools, that’s the answer to how the UST Growling Tigers can reclaim their lost glory.
ecth,
it was indeed a very fatal gamble on the part of pido jarencio and they paid dearly for it. as the saying goes, the tigers live and die for their 3point shots.
thank you so much tigers and gud luck to the remaining teams.
Not that I want the team to have an import, hehe.
But now that the team is in serious rebuilding seasons ahead of them, maybe an import is not such a bad idea.
more money..pacquiao,,
actually in 2006 ust just beaten ateneo to win the crown. But past is past ateneo should win the crown this year because i think next year they will rebuild big time because of the loss of rabeh, noy and jai..
@ecthelion, eastern tiger, goodbye ust tigers
every team ateneo bouts against gets forced to shoot the outside shot.
it wasn’t really because it was Pido’s strategy to shoot 3′s. the ateneo defense forced UST to do so.
If you’ve noticed, every time UST tries to make a play, the results are usually fumbles, turnovers, steals and denials. Kumbaga, natrauma na sila.
Kaka,
But Ateneo still has their Blue chip recruits and NORMAN BLACK. While UST will lose Dylan and Khasim, and maybe, just maybe, Coach Pido.
So UST still has the bigger problem than Ateneo.
i say next season:
DLSU (11-3)
FEU (10-4)
ADMU (9-5)
UP (9-5)
WILL BE THE FINAL FOUR.
not that im a dlsu fan, but an insider tells me that DLSU’s line up will be one of the most talented you will see this decade
FEU and ADMU is a lock to have return trips to the final 4.
UP looks like a Final Four team with Woody,Martin and Mark. Plus, Gamboa will be seeing more minutes at the point with braganza’s departure.
but 4th spot is a toss up bet. UP and Adamson.
UST,UE will lose to much in the offseason due to graduation.
NU. well…Happy Shopping at SM. (sorry, no recruits to brag abt, and just not enough talent to stay afloat)
go ryan!
go nico!
go ATENEO!
ONE BIG FIGHT!
:))
It’s ok that we lose, it’s not really important. What’s important is that Dylan Won the MVP and Jeric won the ROY award.
Dylan and I are off to Bora, Jeric will follow.
Where having a blast in my face. ahihihihi
thanks for the award Father Ermito de Sagun. hug
Father wag nyo po ABABOUyin -Dylan
thanks for the advice Father na mag shoot lang ako na mag shoot na i won’t mind to rebound assist nor defense.
Reseach ka muna sa UAAPsports.com
Melo Afuang (legit)6’5
Dylan Ababou (legit)6’4
Khasim Mirza (legit)6’4
Allein Maliksi (legit)6’4
Daryl Green (legit)6’4
Chris Camus (legit)6’4
guys can you explain what is the SOC RIVERA rule?
No excuses this time. The title of this article is just right. Yes, Ateneo indeed destroyed UST. It was Ateneo all the way from start to finish. Alf was right, Pido didn’t intend us to shoot too many 3′s in this game, it’s just that UST had no choice but to shoot outside the paint/beyond the arc for that matter simply because Ateneo again have shown terrific defense. Even Dylan didn’t get decent shots. Either he forces a turn around jumper or shoot as well a 3. We only saw a very few driving hard to the basket acts. UST wasn’t able to contain Rabeh. 3pointers of the Eagles killed us (again) too c/o Jai and Buenafe. There were too much turnovers on UST’s end. The Tigers failed to control the ball and their transition defense was awful as well. The Eagles capitalized that advantage by scoring more fast break points. Although there were again non-calls made by referees, UST had the most share of their loss in this game. They didn’t even produce enough points from free throws when they’re expected to since their offense wasn’t working well. Bad offense, worst defense. Sorry my Thomasian folks, UST was beaten by UST. Let’s admit it. This was Ateneo’s game. They deserved the win and so I wish them luck in the finals. I smell another year of Blue and White. Congrats Eagles, you had us again. See you next year.
As for the Tigers, next year will be another rebuilding season. With Dylan, Khasim and Allen exiting the walls of UST, the hopes of this team might be again in question. What’s something to look forward though on Season 73 is the arrival of the likes of Soc Rivera and other potential centers. But that is yet another story to elaborate further. Still, kudos to the Growling Tigers for making this far. A 4-10 finish? yeah right! Who would have thought this underdog team will again make it to the Final Four without a legit center in the line up?
No matter what, Go USTE!
Melo is not 6″5. Melo is an undersized Center at 6″3. There is really no legit Center in the line up of UST. Next year there will be. 2011 should be our year, believe me. :p
2 MORE WINS TO GO!
ANIMO ATENEO!!
That game was as boring as the second game of Admu and Lasal.
Looking ahead much?
Way to describe that game? It was like picking candies from babies the way admu stole the ball.
Admu is the best team in protecting leads.
Good luck Dylan sa basketball career mo. You will go places (sadly, not with UST).
Go Ateneo! Eto ang “win and wait”. Hindi pa tapos ang business. Let the remaining 2 sort it out on Thursday.
@Rockwell
Bago mo pintasan ayusin mo muna grammar mo. Pa english-english ka pa mali naman. “he was a MVP last season” it should be “an” “he was an MVP last season” purket nakita mo lang na “M” ang start ng MVP hindi ka na nag isip. “M” Should be pronounce as “EM” so its start with vowel.
Mag isip muna kasi bago mang lait.
congrats to ateneo, they played really well yesterday… It will be interesting to see who they will favor as their next opponent… A barroca-less feu they narrowly beat twice or a streaking ue team that they pounded into submission twice.
For those who are saying ateneo will be undergoing rebuilding… True, but according to coach norman himself, look for dechavez to help out salamat and long. The guy is 6’2” or even a 6’3” playmaker who can play four positions anytime and has outside/inside scoring and the ability to pass the rock when needed. Justin chua is still a work in progress (so is burke) but keep in mind that norman black is one of the best big-man coaches out there. Look for them to imporve more next year. Sumalinog and salva will also be there as well as some talented recruits from the province (davao/cebu) and abroad.
Ateneo’s system that was implemented when they got alvarez as a rookie is now paying dividends for them. That’s a well-placed, well-implemented and well-though-of system coming to fruition.
One big fight!
I think. Its ADmU vs UE na! lakas kc ng UE!
@ Out of the Blue
Your correct, whoever is spreading the notion that Ateneo is in a rebuilding mode is simply talking nonsense. Ateneo has the material to field 2 teams in the UAAP and both teams can probably make the final four. La Salle is dreaming if they think Season 73 will be improvement!! Are they talking about Norbert Torres or that Van Opstal guy from Zobel.. I predict that these 2 guys will go the way of Ferdinand…If you get my drift
Justin Chua will be great next year, he can play like Arao and has more jump than Rabeh (did you see the dunk before the game?)
After the game, UST showed respect by cheering “Go Ateneo.” Babble then responded with “Go USTE.” This shows how much respect these 2 schools have with each other. Too bad we had to face you in the semis, good luck next year UST.
Yeah, I’m looking forward to UE in the finals. UE fans have more class.
Baclao 6 or 7 blocks, and the pocket 3 was just classic. Lumalabas na naman pagkashooter nya from Negros days.
