Ateneo destroys UST, makes return Finals appearance

ATENEO de Manila University had just one thing in mind: to make sure it had the chance to defend its much-coveted title.

The Blue Eagles dismantled a reeling University of Sto. Tomas, 81-64 to punch the first ticket to the Finals of UAAP Season 72 last September 20 at the Araneta Coliseum and exact some measure of revenge for their championship debacle in 2006.

A focused Ateneo squad established itself quickly, creating a 22-16 edge at the end of the first 10 minutes of action. After UST guard Jeric Fortuna scored to open the second quarter, Ateneo blitzed its way to an 8-0 run that held Sto. Tomas scoreless up to the six-minute mark. Both teams exchanged runs, which resulted in a nine-point halftime bulge in favor of the Blue and White.

A third quarter assault by the defending champions, though, served as the killer blow. Ateneo outscored UST, 23-13 with Jai Reyes, Ryan Buenafe and Rabeh Al-Hussaini combining for 17 markers. As a team, the Eagles shot 71 percent in that 10-minute juncture while holding UST to below 30 percent. A Buenafe freebie gave the Blue Eagles their largest lead of the game at 23, 68-45 midway through the final quarter. UST found the lead insurmountable and finally bid farewell to its title aspirations with its fourth straight defeat overall..

“Hindi ko rin alam. Hindi kami makakuha. Good record eh [referring to a 13-1 record of ADMU]. Ayaw man namin, wala na kaming magagawa, kahit paano mayroon na ring record. Yung inexpect kong performance hindi ko nakuha eh, siguro si Dylan [Ababou] pagod na rin, kaya eto knockout”, commented a downtrodden head coach Pido Jarencio, who steered UST to the title in his rookie season against Ateneo in 2006.

Both playing in their last year, newly-crowned league Most Valuable Player Dylan Ababou registered a game-high 19 points while Khasim Mirza tallied a double-double of 14 points and 11 boards. Jai Reyes, with 17 points, was the leading scorer for the Blue Eagles.

Ateneo now awaits the winner of the knockout game between Far Eastern University and University of the East on Thursday, September 24. “We will use the week to get a rest to get off to a fresh start, to heal the minor injuries of the players. The plan is to really get a good start, and hopefully clinch the back-to-back titles,” said Ateneo coach Norman Black.

Black’s troops held the league’s highest-scoring offense to just 64 points on a miserable 27.5 percent shooting clip and just three fastbreak points. In return, they established new Final Four records in fastbreak points [23] and steals [13].

The Blue Eagles last won back-to-back titles in 1987 and 1988. This marks their third back-to-back appearance in the finals since their entry into the league in 1978. Six years ago, Ateneo fell to FEU via a 2-0 sweep in the finals after upending De La Salle University for the title the season before.

The scores:

Ateneo 81 – Reyes 17, Buenafe 15, Al-Hussaini 14, Baclao 13, Salamat 6, Long 6, Chua 6, Sumalinog 2, Austria 2, Monfort 0, Gonzaga 0, Golla 0.

UST 64 – Ababou 19, Mirza 14, Teng 10, Bautista 9, Fortuna 7, Afuang 4, Camus 1, Maliksi 0, Aytona 0.

Quarter scores: 22-16, 40-31, 63-44, 81-64.

    @kaka,

    nakakatawa ka. pinagtatawanan ka ng buong ateneo community.

    old issue na yang kay jobe. inuulit at inuulit lang. Last year ginawa na nila yan para madistract ang ateneo sa finals, ngayon inuulit na naman nila para madistract sa finals ang ateneo.

    haay naman talaga. mga tao talaga lahat gagawin para makapagchampion lang.

    nakakatawa ka. talo mo pa ako sa pagpapatawa.

    Lumang scoop na yan. In fact, there were rumors before on both Jobe’s and Japeth’s not having graduated from high school but those had never been proven.

    @ kaka,

    I won’t give credits to Pido Jarencio, kahit dalhin mo kay Radjko Toroman or any basketball analyst yan, talagang pangkanto ang systema niya. Dapat na siyang palitan. San ka nakakita ng coach na ito lang ang sinasabi:

    ” Ikot niyo lang ng Ikot ang Bola pero sa Dylan lang ang titira ah, siya ang may kumpiyansa.” Basta pagbukas ka sa puwesto mo itira mo na baka pumasok.

    Tapos ayaw pa niya ilabas si Ababou eh pagod na, “Bawasan daw ang tambak, baka matanggal daw siya na coach”. SUS ginoo anong klaseng payo yan sa mga players niya, walang adjustments tapos basang-basa ni Eric Salamat yung play at san ipapasa kaya laging STEAL ang bola.

    Walang technical adjustments and terms si Pido, dapat sa kanya sa Inter-Tsinelas magcoach eh. Dami kaya nagsasabi nyan noh kahit mga taga-UST.

    @Hoopista.. I beg to disagree with your statement: “ust is capable naman to match offers from other school.” because if we do, Bringas should have been ours. As well as Cebu hotshot Marty Pearce who is now in Morayta. Among others, there are a few “should have been’s” that didn’t make it simply because UST has nothing to offer beyond than the usual perks student-athletes receive. But then that’s another story. I’m glad we still have players who are willing to play School pride above all. Teng is a jackpot. I also wish to see Neypes and Labing-isa in next year UST’s line up.

    I understand the frustrations thrown against Coach Pido. But come to think of it, in his 4 years of service as Tigers’ Head Coach, he led UST in 3 final four appearances and out of that, 1 championship. You may question his coaching skills but I think we should as well consider the accomplishments he had. Like others think here, I agree that he has still yet to fully learn the coaching skills in collegiate standards. For me, I’ll give him a year or two for improvement. You have to understand that coaches have different approaches. These approaches may or may not work in a team’s program. Just imagine the glory days of mighty UST team in mid 90’s when Aric Del Rosario was still their coach then. Kung nababanas kayong nakikita si Pido na nagmumura at mabilis uminit ang ulo, wala pa yan sa panahon ni Amang Aric. I think he was more strict than Pido yet he produced 4-peat for the school despite of his attitude as a coach. In short, kanya kanyang diskarte yan.

    @ doug
    i’ve seen the style of coach aric when i was in ust. he was so strict & i could not count how many times he yelled & say bad words to his players whenever they commit mistakes & yet he produces a formidable tiger squad. kailangan lang ng ibang diskarte ni pido, good plays to use full potentials of their players. pero i think if the alumni & school wants to reclaim the glory days of ust, they should improve the “perks” of their athletes for motivation purposes.

    go uste!

    @ Doug,

    Men iba si Aric Del Rosario kay Pido, Si Aric Typical may alam talaga sa pagcocoaching, ala Don Nelson siya, Oo madalas siya magmura dahil sa emotions na gusto manalo.

    Si Pido di mo paba nakita magcoach? ako mismo nakita ko talagang matatawa ka sa mga sinasabi niya, pati baha sa Espana ginamit pa niya, Men this is scientific basketball, level ng pangkanto basketball and coaching very low. Kahit tanungen mo mga basketball analyst, same comment din.

    Kung gusto ng UST ibalik yung glory days nila, get a good coach, na may “ALAM” hindi yung parang sa sampaloc maynila lang pinulot yung mga terminologies para isigaw pa sa mga players.

    Bano na coach talaga si Pido, kaya naman nakapasok ang UST sa final 4 in 3 seasons dahil malakas mga players nila pero nagrecruit nun ay si Nel Parado nung siya pa ang coach ng UST, Pido? recruiting players wala mahilig sa Gold Chip, palakasan method siya.

    Dapat sa kanya magAral muna ng coaching, kahit na exPBA pa siya, eh nung naglalaro siya dati buhaya naman, walang sense maglaro, Tira ng Tira kaya kulelat Ginebra nung Mid-ninties eh,eh buhaya eh.

    @Hammed Turkoglu…

    Don’t get me wrong I am not a pro-Pido nor an anti-Pido, I just feel that the man deserves another chance because of the accomplishments he has done so far for this team. No matter how you put it, Pido had his share of UST’s entry in those 3 final four. People loved him in Season 69 since UST was triumphant over Ateneo. Just because we expected too much the next season, we started to hate him when the team failed to get a repeat. And when UST was not able to make it in the final four of Season 71, we began cursing him. Yes sir, I’ve seen him coaching during games and even just in practices at UST Gym. Hindi purket napanood mo lang sa TV or narinig mo lang saglet na “ipasa kay Ababou..Dylan ikaw na bahala” ang play, that concludes the way of his coaching. Give me a break! Let me ask you this question, DLSU has way better current line up than the Tigers but they finished the season without entering the final four, will you blame coach Franz for that? They have the material but they failed to execute. IMHO, Dylan was the only consistent player for UST this season. You shouldn’t be surprised if at crucial times, you will go to your main man and that’s so basic to understand!

    Hindi, CHAMBA lang ang pagpasok ng UST sa final 4,kundi lang nagkulang ang mga players ng DLSU sila ang papasok, tinalo nila ang NU pagnakataon. UST on a 3 straight losing streak, uhm make it 4 kasi tinambakan pala sila ng Ateneo.

    Basta wala siyang kuwenta magcoach, and if were the sports director of UST,hindi ko siya kukunen.
