JRU rolls over defending champions in style

WHEN the going gets rough, the tough get going.
Marc Cagoco proved that point as he steered his Jose Rizal University five to a 77-64 win over San Beda College in NCAA Season 85 last September 16 at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan City.
Cagoco, JRU’s team captain, lifted the Shaw five from a near-collapse in the payoff period. After the Red Lions whittled down the Bombers’ lead to three, 58-55, through a 7-0 run, the fourth-year guard led a 19-9 counterattack that put the clamps on the three-time, defending champions. All in all, Cagoco scored 11 of his team-high 19 points in the payoff period, including two crucial triples that created distance in the dying stretch.
Marvin Hayes assisted Cagoco with a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds. Garvo Lanete, meanwhile, paced San Beda with 16 markers. Sudan Daniel, who exploded for a career-high 31 points against JRU in the first round, was held to just seven points and seven boards.
Entering the game, San Beda averaged a league-best 20 fastbreak points per game. The Heavy Bombers, though, limited the Mendiola quintet to just five markers and dished out eight more assists, 19-11. San Beda’s 13-point loss was its worst since 2005, the last time the Lions missed out on the Final Four. JRU also managed to avenge its 96-81 defeat in its first round meeting last August 10.
JRU head coach Ariel Vanguardia said, “A lot of people might hate him [Cagoco], and the way he plays but I love my players. I know that come gametime, we’ll need to go to him being the veteran and the team captain. This is his final year also. Earlier, he said he wanted this game, he wanted the ball, and he wanted to call the plays. I told them that if we get to force them to score just around 70 points, we may have a chance since they’re averaging around 90. The defense we played against Letran worked wonders for us so I asked them [if] can we still apply that same kind of defense today. Luckily we were able to do that. We need to sustain it though in our last three games for a shot at the one of the top two spots.
“We are now committed that we won’t wait for Etame [Joe]. James [Sena] still has something in him that’s waiting to unfold. I saw Hayes’ brilliance. We still have some aspects to improve on and hopefully it will be evident in our last three games as we haven’t reached our peak yet,†he added.
The scores:
JRU 77 – Cagoco 19, Hayes 13, Wilson 11, Sena 10, Agas 8, Njei 7, Bulangis 5, Lopez 4, Apinan 0.
San Beda 64 – Lanete 16, Gamalinda 15, Daniel 7, Caram 7, Pascual 5, Hermida 5, Taganas 4, de la Rosa 2, Marcelo 2, Tecson 1, Tirona 0.
Quarter scores: 13-11, 38-29, 54-44, 77-64.

d na talaga effective ang high low play for sudan daniel…naseal n ng jru un..congrats bombers!sana maibalik n ni hermida ung game nia tulad last year…sayang dn effort ni bambam gamalinda naun..pressured sya kasi last year n nia..
ang galing galing ni nchotu njei knina..hahaha ..JRU may be the first team to blemish baste’s record..they are really eager for the crown..hmm…
hndi man lng ngpalit o ngbago ng play si Frankie Lim knina eh…puro high low play nlng..nachecheck naman na ng JRU at sguro ung mga susunod na teams..sana naman may bago ng play for the upcoming games pa..unti unti ng bumabalik si hermida..sana tuloy tuloy lng..
ANIMO RED AND WHITE!
ANIMO
good game by jru. they were the better team during the game. poor execution on offense by sbc and freethrows shooting was awful. was able to limit wilson buy not cagoco. congrats jru!
animo!
WLA UNG MYYBNG? ngmu2kmuk pa cguro. la pa c ETAME JOE ah. HAY. i hope we can giv a gud fight against BASTE.
congrats s bombers sna b4 mn lng mkgraduate masilayan nmin ung inaasam asam nAting CROWN!!!
GUDLUCK AND GODBLESS TEAM!
PARA KAY TATAY PEPE!
MABUHAY RIZAL!
@soothsayer
tanong lng po..
paano ba pg nasecure ng baste ung finals spot, paano ung format na gagawin?
pag naglaban ang 2, 3 and 4.. magiging stepladder diba? the 234 teams will make sure na magkakalaban-laban sa final 4.
Arriba!
Mabuhay!
iAnimo!
Pag well-coached yung kalaban and ang mga players material-type, walang magawa. just like sa game nila vs baste.
This game showed how poor Fraking Lim’s coaching is. Imagine since the 2nd Quarter the JRU squad already checked the low post play by San Beda but Frankie didn’t changed his play. If I’m not mistaken, more than 10 TOs were accounted on that kind of play. A good fight by San Beda especially Bambam and Garvo. Well this is a SECOND wake up call for you Mr. Frankie Lim. You commit the same mistake you did in the game against SSC. Wake up coach!
iAnimo!
Animo Cuatro Animo San Beda!
You could see the determination to win of San Beda’s players particularly on Gabo, Anjo and Bambam as they cut the lead down to 3. But again a bad low post pass to Su which resulted to TO and Cagoco drained a 3pt basket. Anyways, a big game for Cagoco. Kudos to JRU and to Vanguardia for checking the play of Frankie Lim.
@ ALL
cno nmn nagsabi sa inyo na magaling na coach c FRANKIE LIM? magaling lng ung mga players nilang nakukuha..imagine last year against MAPUA..2 beses cla tnalo ng MAPUA..and muntik na clang masilat ng mapua nung do or die game..pano kng wla c sam ekwe last year? cgrdo nsa finals ang mapua last year..mas magaling pa nga c LEO ISAAC eh..
dang it… talo beda.. oh well..
but i think what happened is good for SBC… they have to be reminded that they are not the same team like last year… we are not the powerhouse team anymore…

and sudan daniel was not too much present in their defense..mas magaling pa dumepensa naun c dave marcelo..d nakagawa c sena dahil sa kanya..c pascual missing link dn..better set plays for the big guards of san beda..gamalinda and lanete can pump the offense of SBC…sana depensa nalang c daniel tulad ni ekwe last year..c menor ang offense c sam ekwe defense…
huhu. =( 13-2 not 14-1. nice game. nice article mia girl. i miss yah. =)
guys, i really admire the way how JRU won against our team, SAN BEDA. yet, i wonder, magiging proud talaga sana ako sainyo kung napakalinis ng laro ninyo.
You will know how dust tastes. Maiiyak kayo sa new offensive patterns, recall Game 3 of last years Championships? We knocked you senseless!)
hindi kaya binenta nanaman ni Frankie yung game? like nung game 2 nung champs last year?
ANO BA FRANKIE?
I think JRU will win the crown this year!!
ok lang yan mga lions!
ilang years nio naman nakuha korona di ba sabi niyo dynasty na kayo, hope you understand that we need a crown din naman , were almost drought na!
minsan wag naman masyadong maere , anyways it was a nice game,
ala vievo!
It seems that SBC is relying too much on Daniel, though they can execute their offense more if they continue their ball rotation. Daniel’s inside play didn’t work in this game and for sure it wouldn’t anymore. Keep on the running game but don’t forget to get back on defense. And most of all, improve the free throwing shooting.
Anyways, it was a great game. Good job Bombers!
Well done Heavy Bombers!
The Lions fell into the same trap as Letran, no adjustments.
after soaring to an 18 pt lead eh bigla pang matatapyas ang kalamangan to seven, muntik-muntikan pa talaga. kakampi na nga lang nila ang oras.
yeah i agree, no longer the powerhouse team that they were nung naka-3 peat. and if you remember dikit naman yung mga panalo nila sa championship eh. like nung 2006, even at the last second eh muntikan pa silang masilat ng PCU sa game 3 kundi lang nagbwakaw yang pa-star na si belga.
once and for all, napatunayan na sudan can be shut down kaya dun sa sinasabi ni frankie lim na walang makakapigil kay su sa NCAA, pwes nagkakamali ka.
sana ganun din ang intensity pag nakalaban ang baste. pag nangyari yun eh di malayong JRU talaga ang magcha-champion this year. tinambakan ang letran, tinambakan ang san beda, malamang kakayanin din ang SSC-R.
and would love to see them win the title too for the late jayson nocum. nasan man sya ngayon, may he rest in peace.
@king knight
Correction po sir. San Beda won the opening games vs Mapua as in we won by a margin of 25 points, but the second game was another story. Leo Isaac made the old game style work. Tawag dun slow break or slow motion. And it worked for Leo.
Congrats JRU you did a superb job on us and Kiko had no adjustment on the hi lo pay. A stubborn heart brings defeat. This time its the coach as you can see the players fire but they had to obey the coach. Its called Leadership, and the Coach should lead. He didnt. End of story.
Saludos JRU!
Congrats heavies! CSJL and SBC now experienced their worst lost ever and JRU is now experiencing their greatest year ever since 1972.
Sudan only got 7pts and 7 rebounds, tsk tsk.. it just shows that san beda is relying on their import. If Sudan explodes in a game sbc for sure will win the game.
I thought your a bedan?then, prove to us that you have what a bedan education has.
To all bedans who credits our win, thank you.:)
@alchemist15
If you continue reading the thread at which you copy pasted my post, I had said to boytabo that I was teasing, its not meant to bash nor degrade anyone. I had not bashed a person or a school, maligned, profaned nor cursed anyone. boytabo got it and he laughed with me.
I simply was jesting. Perhaps you cannot get that kind of humor. Can’t you be magnanimous in victory?
Serious ka masyado, baka ma alta presyon ka. Lighten up.
on the other hand, baka kaya di nakipagshake ng hands eh meh namumuo pa ring alitan sa pagitan nilang dalawa.
@little chief
Bro its a powerhouse team, we have been in the comfort zone with the old players. Its time for the ones to step up and they have. We would not have gotten off this way if we aren’t a powerhouse team. Do not doubt that even for a minute, otherwise you diminish role of the players who fight for us to win. You win some you lose some.
We played the same game vs Arellano and it really backfired this time. I knew it would catch up with us sooner or later. Better now that there is a reality check. This is the time your team needs your support and not just when we win. You have to lend your moral support more than ever. The boys will be hungrier and Lim should be wiser.
Again its the one who leads who should make the plays work. The coach leads, he did not.
@i_am_rizal
The tiff between Lim and Vanguardia is not about SBC and JRU. The animosity started at the Talk and Text coaching staff arguments. Lim fired Vanaguardia and ever since that, there has been fire n both their pants. I think he is wrong for not shaking hands and am not justifying it. That’s what i have been told.
Education is one thing and its application thats another matter, but then its up to individual to live it, right? After all that is free will that God gave us all.
Now off to work we go.
OMG! KALUNGKOT Namaaaaaan!
Haaay I still hope for your victory! MUCH MUCH MUCH PRAYERS FOR YOU RED LIONS!….>PAGBUTIHIN PA RIN NINYO MANANALO kayo vs.JRU & vs.SSC! More Power Red Lions! YAHWEH BLESS!
congrats JRU! you guys played a good game! maganda naging adjustment ng system…
although i cannot say that the SBC had a nice game but you guys did your best so good job!

Triple Tie is possible!
In their first round encounter, Daniel was scoring all game long and the bombers were not able to find the solution to the offensive pattern designed for Sudan. Last night, Jose Rizal found the antidote. Expectedly,it was not difficult for Vanguardia to find the answer. In the second round, the Red Lions were executing the same play in all their games for the two centers, Marcelo and Daniel.Pero, nabasa na ng opponents. The entry passes to the two players were being cut by the defense. In fact, a lot of San Beda’s turnovers were caused by the failed execution of the designed post up plays. The coaching staff should have been more imaginative in planning their offense. Mabuti na lang despite the errors caused by the entry passes in their past games, nanalo pa rin sila and it was because mahina ang ang mga nakalaban na teams. But, this kind of very predictable offensive pattern will not work against the other final 4 contenders because they have the talents. For San Beda to keep its crown, hopefully Marcelo and Daniel can add dimension to their game. If they can learn to space a little more distance from the undergoal and learn to dribble and drive to the basket or make short jumpers, then this can create problem to the opponents’ defense. These are the qualities of good centers like Sena, Sangalang, Ciriacruz and Ateneo’s Al Hussaini. Last observation, if San Beda cannot execute their vaunted running game, it will be hard for them to win games. This means they need to haul down more defensive rebounds. As they say, good defense is good offense.More homework for the coaching staff. Animo! Roar for Four!
What the hell happened? haha.. haven’t had the chance to watch the game, but i was totally expecting a RL win here, well all i can say is congrats! JRU you rocked the Bedans to their core.
Anyway all is good and well, this game just made our league a little bit more interesting. Goodluck to your next games. can’t wait for sscr-jru and sscr-sbc
Bravo SSC Bravo.
MOTIVATION HEART EXPERIENCE AND NEVER SAY DIE ATTITUDE ..yan JRU d 2lad ng ibaNg skuLs wLang gaNyan na dating..hahaha.

“THE BEST IS YET TO COME”
JOSE RIZAL UNIVERSITY HEAVY BOMBERS!
Hey Bedans,
Didn’t you read the interview by FHM on Coach Frankie Lim? He said it himself, “Kahit Security Guard sa labas ang magcoach ng team na to, Champion pa rin”.
Says a lot about the old man.
Congrats JRU for a job well done. Congrats San Beda for being sports especially the players.
More power NCAA!!!
Mabuhay Rizal
Animo Beda
Final year na ni Riego “Bambam” Gamalinda!?!?
But he has yet to show his true potential!!
Sayang!
@Six Pocket, actually tama si king knight, dalawang beses nga tinalo ng Mapua SBC last year using coach Leo’s slo-mo type of game. yung pangalawa eh yung game 1 ng Final 4 na naging dahilan para magka do-or-die game sa pagitan nila.
The second wave of the 28 year drought has began.
sayang talaga! napabayaan.. pero kudos to BAM-BAM Gamalinda, he stepped up like a true Captain! Bawi nalang sa mga susunod na games!!!
