The Letran Knights avenged their 1st round loss to the Arellano University Chiefs with a 89-85 win in the 2nd round on Aug 28 at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
Knights Head Coach Louie Alas leaned on the services of RP Smart Gilas team member, RJ Jazul, who single-handedly carried the team in the last 2 1/2 minutes of the game to overcome another Chiefs comeback. “I gave him[Jazul] the instruction to shoot at will and luckily he converted every shotâ€, said Coach Alas about Jazul’s crunch time heroics.
With both teams fighting for solo 4th place of the standings, RJ Jazul scored 7 points in the crucial stretch including a dagger 3-point shot from the right quarter court with 11 seconds remaining in the game.  The Chiefs ended their 5 game winning streak with a 7-5 slate.
With a 14- point lead at the 6:33 minute mark in the 2nd period, the Chiefs quickly answered with 5 straight points at the start of the 3rd period to bringing the lead down to 7, 50-43. Kevin Alas and Kirk Del Rosario, help extend the lead to 13-points for Letran, 56-43, also in the 3rd quarter.
In the final period, the Chiefs were able to put pressure on the Knights to tie the game at 80-all with 3:32 minutes remaining.
Coach Alas said after the game, “This is sweet revenge. It’s pretty embarrassing to be defeated by a guest team most especially if your team is a tough contender like ours. We were able to execute what I wrote on the board in the dugout. The boys were resilient today from start to finish that’s why I can’t find the right words to say about this victoryâ€.
RJ Jazul led the Knights with 18 points, 10 of which came in the final period while Rey Guevarra had 18 points and 4 rebounds for Letran. Gio Ciriacruz led Arellano with 31 points and7 rebounds.
BOX SCORES:
LETRAN 89 – Guevarra 18, Jazul 18, K. Alas 15, Gutilban 11, Del Rosario 10, Foronda 8, Cortes 6, Belencion 3, J. Alas 0, Malabago 0.
ARELLANO 85 – G.Ciriacruz 31, Celada 11, Tayongtong 11, I. Ciriacruz 10, Reducto 7, Apostol 5, Anquilo 5, Agustin 2, Dimla 2, Rivera 1.
QUARTER SCORES: 25-21, 50-38, 69-61, 89-85.

Congratz to Letran!
Yahoo!!! YEHEY!!!
nakita ng Arellanites / Arelyanista where they belong!!!

I’ve been impressed by the play of Arellano’s Gio Ciriacruz and Adrian Celeda this season. Ciriacruz has been on fire lately and has become a dominant force in the NCAA. He looks like a great pro prospect in the mold of Alvin Patrimonio. While he doesn’t have elite athleticism he is an elite scorer who has advanced face-up and post-up skills. He has a deceptively quick first step, good ball skills, nice footwork and incredible balance and can finish strong in traffic. He has a knack for drawing fouls and is an excellent free-throw shooter. His feel for the game is top-notch and projects as a solid small forward in the PBA.
Celada, meanwhile, is a great shooter and has a smooth offensive game with excellent athleticism. His height, length and explosiveness gets him a fair amount of rebounds, blocks and steals. He was far more impressive in the first round of the tournament and has been overshadowed by Ciriacruz’s dominant play of late, and is clearly not as aggressive as he was before. He needs to regain his assertiveness as he is a very efficient and capable scorer himself; regardless he looks like a promising pro prospect who can become a Lordy Tugade-type player in the PBA.
I used to respect RJ Jazul. For me, I think he deserved that moniker, “oh so cool”.
But what the *uck, sinisigawan niya si Gio Ciriacruz when the latter was about to take a crucial free throw.
Gio, of course, tinablan.
I was proud of the Arellano Chiefs. Letran needs to be dirty just to win.
Arellano’s next game are the Heavy Bombers. While Letran has the Blazers.
Its very easy to assume that the Final Four is made.
Fernando Jose Altamirano,
Yes you are right. Giorgio Ciriacruz HAS what it takes to go to the next level, the PBA.
I also agree with the analyst Butch Maniego, “I hope Gio doesn’t develop hernia, he keeps carrying his team on his back”!
@Shermine Shahrivar ;yes it is!
gnda ng game knina..congrats samen!wahahaha
arriba letran!
nasan na ngaun yabang ng arellano?
@ proudletranite,
Well, I’m not from Arellano, just an avid fan of Philippine Collegiate Basketball.
But, okay, congrats to the Letran Knights for achieving somewhat of a “breathing space”, between them and the Chiefs.
But I’m still disappointed at RJ Jazul.
Nasa friendster ko pa naman siya.
For me Right now, the players who are in the Running for the Mythical 5 are Giorgio Ciriacruz, John Wilson, Jimbo Aquino, others I cant tell.
@Shermine
Mind games are part of the competition. Even the greatest basketball player of all time, Michael Jordan, is one of the best when it comes to the mental aspect of the game. Sometimes you have got to mess the opponent’s head to be able to get the advantage. In my opinion, getting into a mental warfare with your opponent is an important trait of a great player.
yey! haha panalo! 4th place
kaya yan! sana tuloy tuloy na :)
arriba letranista!
@ iceman,
I know trash talking aka mental aspect is part of the game. You do that by SAYING sweet nothings.
Note, I said saying in bold letters.
What RJ Jazul did was SHOUTING!
Kasi pag saying, hindi masyadong obvious. Pag shouting, obvious na obvious.
Paano na lang yung mga batang nanunuod? Sa mga murang isipan?
Para sa kanila walang mali, puro tama.
^ well said iceman..
RJ and RG carry the knights to gain a slight advantage in the race for Final 4..
@Shermine Shahrivar
My mythical 1st team so far: Gio Ciriacruz of Arellano, John Wilson of Jose Rizal, Jimbo Aquino of San Sebastian, RJ Jazul of Letran and Sudan Daniel of San Beda.
Shermine, how long have you been watching basketball? This is not golf where you have to maintain your silence when someone is taking a shot. Have you been to a basketball game especially college? Why are there cheerleaders and bands? to cheer for one’s time and distract the opponent. Players do the same thing too. IF it bothered Arellano they should have done the same thing when Jazul was taking his free throw shots. They probably know that if they do this, Jazul will just smile at them. Cool cool Jazul! throws that 3point dagger!
tatalunin namin kayo Animo San Beda!
@Shermine
Lol. Trash talking is trash talking. Does it matter when you shout or not? You’re still talking trash!.. And clearly you have not watched that many basketball games, Michael Jordan also used to SHOUT at opponents during free throws! not to mention he also shouts at his teammates to get them in the game.
Great players do it all the time. Kobe does it, Dirk does it, Lebron does it, legends like Bird and Magic also do it. Hell even the most famous Philippine basketball player of all time, Robert Jaworski, SHOUTS when he trash talks!
Point is, trash talking is done to get into the head of your opponent. It doesn’t matter when you say “sweet nothings” or SHOUT at your opponents. It’s the same intention, just a different way of doing it.
@Shermine Shahrivar
My mythical 1st team (as of today): Gio Ciriacruz of Arellano, John Wilson of Jose Rizal, Jimbo Aquino of San Sebastian, RJ Jazul of Letran and Sudan Daniel of San Beda.
Can’t make a pick for MVP yet as it depends on the final standings and which teams make the Final Four.
@ Fernando Jose Altamirano,
So your making Gio Ciriacruz, the Chiefs’ center, a power forward and John Wilson, the Bombers’ Off Guard, at Small forward.
A very formidable line-up.
But Sudan Daniel? Still okay.
coach altamirano overshadowed is Argel Mendoza of EAC. His offense and his carrying EAC on his own shoulders may be good enough to be considered.
san beda fans are like overweight individuals who hate the fact that they live in a filthy house with animal feces all around them, the refrigerator filled with lard, sugary foods and cookies, partially hydrogenated oil and high fructose corn syrup. There is a treamill but it serves only to dry clothes and where boxes of old letters are piled up. That is san beda. pwe!
@Shermine Shahrivar
I agree, Sudan Daniel is the weakest of the five, but mythical teams and MVP races are as much about production AND winning than anything else, and Daniel IS producing and San Beda IS winning, so there you go.
he!he!he!
shimmering lakes,
Grammar man, wrong. So wrong.
I think what you mean to say was Arjel Mendoza also deserves to be in the Mythical 5.
He leads the League in scoring and tunovers.
In behalf of other bedans here in inbounpass I sincereley apologize to all the letranites here. wag niyo nalang pasninin yang si jollibee. at sana wag mo naman pagawayin ang mga kapwa nating bedans at letranites dito. salamat.
Fernando Jose Altamirano,
But you have to agree with me that the Red Lions are more of a team than a player, unlike the ones mentioned above.
@ impostorang AU Sucks
matalo ka sa asar kasi talunan kayong mga taong grasa,,, please I’m the REAL AU Sucks,,, and im not gay becoz im a lesbian!!!
Hail to the Cheap!!!
Mabuhay ang mga taong grasa ng Legarda!!!
@Fernando
“MVP races are as much about production AND winning than anything else”
Not really. Don’t know if they changed the criteria already but in the NCAA, MVP’s are just about players’ stats. Remember a few years back when CSB’s Sagad won the MVP even though Benilde is at the bottom of the standings? The player with the most statistical points at the end of the elimination rounds wins the MVP regardless of his team’s standing. Sucks but that’s how the NCAA works
@shimmering lakes
Argel Mendoza may appear to have impressive stats (though he shoots at a poor percentage and leads the league, by far, in turnovers) but he plays on a bad team that is nowhere near making the Final Four. How valuable can you be if your team isn’t winning? That is the big difference between Ciriacruz and Mendoza.
A good thing about mythical teams is that they are MYTHICAL, so it’s perfectly OK to have your own picks that not all people would agree with (“to each his own”).
@iceman
You are right, I remember Sagad winning MVP, which everybody thought was ridiculous; personally I prefer production and winning as my criteria for individual awards, though common sense plays a big factor, too. The game of basketball is played with little nuances and intangibles which might not reflect on the stat sheet, so I think it’s a sound practice to apply a bit of subjectivity to the selection process. But of course this is just my personal opinion.
Hail to the Chiefs! Mangangahas na akong magsabi: Welcome to the NCAA.
Sudan Daniel is not this year’s MVP.
Not that I’m a racist, I just hope that this time a Filipino would win the award.
@Shermine Shahrivar
You made a great point about San Beda’s success being less a result of individual brilliance than a total team effort. And gosh no, there is no way Sudan Daniel is this year’s MVP, Filipino or not. But as of today he makes my mythical five, again my personal pick only so it’s perfectly fine if you disagree.
@Shermaine Shahrivar
Listen to yourself. I’m not picking a fight. I’m just commenting on the reasoning.
unfortunately beda will have to rely on him if beda has any hope of having a chance to win it all the way they relied on ekwe – 2 time mvp. 3 if not for the kicking incident which dsqualified him.
@ Leon Kilat,
From Shermine Shahrivar:
(Referreing to Sudan)
Tsk Tsk Tsk

As a guest team,,, AU chiefs prove their worthness in NCAA season 85,,, by giving spice to the league,,,
hope to play again in season 86!!!
Hail to the Chiefs!
BTW, I saw the game earlier and was very impressed with Gio Ciriacruz.
Kudos To AU and CSJL for playing a good game.
Lupit mo talaga.
congrats to the alas brothers and kirk del rosario, ang gagaling niyo talaga manira.
