Wilson’s game high performance carried JRU past the Blazers

ohn Marion Wilson, playing his 4th year with the JRU Heavy Bombers posted a career-high performance of 48 points, 17 rebounds and 3 steals to help the Jose Rizal Heavy Bombers conquer the College of St. Benilde Blazers, 95-85 on August 26 at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
Wilson erupted for 25 points in the 1st half alone. The Heavy Bombers posted their biggest lead of the ballgame at 23, 73-50, with 3:50 minutes remaining in the 3rd.
JRU enteried the 2nd period with a 17-point edge, until the Blazers, led by David Urra and Mark De Guzman, ignited an 11-0 run that held the Heavy Bombers scoreless for over 3 minutes. Wilson again pushed JRU out of harms way by converting his 3rd triple to extend their lead to 9-points, 41-32 with under 5 minutes to play in the 1st half.
“Wilson is by far Consistent averaging 20-points per ballgame except for those games we lost were he scored under 20-pointsâ€, said JRU Head Coach Ariel Vanguardia on Wilson’s performance this NCAA Season 85.
In the 2nd half, Wilson unloaded 17 more points in the 3rd period. In the 4th period, the Blazers’ 9-0 run could not stop the Heavy Bombers rampage. John Wilson’s 48 point production is by far the best single game performance by any player since Lim Eng Beng’s single game high 55-points back in 1974 when La Salle was still a member of the NCAA.
“I expect more things to come. Wilson will be a marked man. He does other things if his outside shot doesn’t fall for himâ€, added Coach Vanguardia.
There’s no room for error.  We’d still take it one game at a time. We want to get the number 1 or 2 spot. The only to get it is to stick together. The way the other teams are playing, they are already at their peak “, Coach Vanguardia continued.
BOX SCORES:
JRU 95 – Wilson 48, Hayes 10, Agas 10, Cagoco 6, Sena 4, Lopez 4, Apinan 4, Njei 3, Matute 3, Gabriel 3, Kabigting 0.
CSB 85 – De Guzman 23, Johnston 13, Manlapaz 9, Urra 8, Tajonera 7, Montecastro 6, Abolucion 5, Dalanon 5, Umlas 4, Manalac 3, Tan 2, Argamino 0, Dela Paz 0.
QUARTER SCORES: 30-14, 56-41, 79-61, 95-85
Game Notes: James Sena and Marvin Hayes suited up for the game after undergoing medical treatment for their foot injuries.  Jayr Bulangis was hospitalized last August 25 due to tonsillitis. Also, Blazers’ Jeff Morial and Alex Wong did not play due to injuries.

Sayang, talo ulit kami…hehehehe, oks lang yan, we’ll get them soon.
ANIMO BENILDE!!! One La Salle, baby, One La Salle:)
Congrats heavy bombers! congrats wilson for your career high performance and for listing another bomber’s name in the league’s history!
Congrats din sa San Beda for their 10th win! see you lions on sept.16!
Mag Comment pa kayo Pleasssssse!
Congrats Bombers!
Goodluck to all! malapit na ang final four! yahoo
Ala vievo Bombers!
JRU needs wilson to have this kind of performance on big games, especially against SSCR and SBC. kung hindi, they won’t reach the finals. sana maging consistent ang performance nya hanggang sa finals, kung makakapasok.
question:
may 5th year pa ba si wilson, hayes at cagoco sa JRU? ano na nangyari sa bagong import ng JRU?
hindi ba nagkaron din ng 40+ points in a game sina Ernani Epondulan at Marco Fajardo, both former heavy bombers star?
Akala ko maglalaro na si Joe Etame. He was in uniform, warming up, shooting threes, DUNKING!
Grabe, nipis ng mga binti!
Long distance runner siguro dati.
@ King_Bomber,
JRU is trying to get a hold on Joshua Saret because Mark Cagoco is playing his final year.
I don’t think na highest points made belongs to Lim Eng Beng.
Maybe someone here remembers Itoy Esguerra ng Letran. parang umiskor sya ng 80+ noon. Or maybe sa PBA to nangyari, not so sure.
Congrats pala sa JRU & San Beda. And sympre to John Wilson.
I admire the people of SBC, JRU, and SSC. Puro admiration and recognition of the opponent’s achievements. It’s a good thing walang buraot na letran na nanggugulo sa forum! I hope na AU pumasok sa FINAL 4!
Congrats to JRU for winning. John Wilson is flamboyant in the game. good luck to your next game.
Animo San Beda!
Congrats Wilson for the career high score! I believe JRU can beat Baste with wise plays and unselfish players dishing out to the open Bomber. Beat Baste and you have a shot at the Final 4 and the Championship.
All the best JRU.
Go San Beda Fight!
I hope Etame gets to suit up very soon, so JRU can have a stronger presence in the paint and compete with the strong teams this year.
Go, Bombers. Do your best to end the longest title drought in NCAA…
as much as i hate to admit it, but this guy sure has improved. he is a bit inconsistent though, having tough games specially against teams like SBC and SSC. When he plays like this all the time, its going to be hard playing against the bombers because he can spread the defense and allow their bigs and slashers more room to score their points.
galing mo idol wilson…tuwang tuwa na2man sau c
D_ _ _ _…
galingan mo let s su2nod
congratz!!!!
Wilson is a great player, he can certainly shoot at the lights in any game, however, he lacks consistency…Galing ng kamay mo bata….
Congrats JRU!
Bravo Baste!!!
Wow! What’s remarkable here is that he not only scored 48 points but he got 17 REBOUNDS!
Most centers only average about 6-8 rebounds.
He’s only like 6’1″ or 6’2″ if i’m not mistaken.
This is just an amazing performance.
Eh papaano naman hindi gagawa ng 48 iyan eh lahat ng bola sa kanya na lang. Kahit si Taganas ng San Beda eh kayang gumawa ng 50 basta sa kanya lang lahat ng bola.
Who would you rather have in a tight game: Wilson or Jimbo? Legit na tanong ito. But funny answers will be accepted – wag lang sana tahasang pambabastos.
winner
syempre sya ang mainit at sya ang umiiskor eh alangang ipilit sa kakampi.
@Leon kilat
my money’s on wilson, his end game performance against mapua is proof positive of that.
yes, he only scored 9 pts against baste but that was really an offnight for him both offensively and defensively. he got into early foul trouble as well so he really didn’t get on track.
@Observer
Mismo. Players like Wilson and Jimbo are like James Bond. Licensed to shoot. They HAVE TO take the shot if there’s an opening. In fact papagalitan sila pag hindi nila tumira. Pag minalas, ibang usapan na yon.
I’m personally 50-50 with a slight edge for Wilson kasi magaling din sumaksak. Thanks.
Si Willy Wilson ba ang pinag uusapan nyo??
Di ba naglalaro na sya sa San Miguel sa PBA?? Lumipat sya sa NCAA
Hi, i believe this is off topic but very possible what will happen if at the end of the elims San Beda and San Sebastian will be tied at 17-1?? what then?
Hope Ms. Mia can answer or anyone who knows, or mr. Observer perhaps the College Hoops Encyclopedia Observer? haha.
La Palabra De Valiente! Bravo SSC Bravo!
i’d take wilson over aquino..
Anyway Congrats to JRU for this win. Mabuhay guys!
Great Game Wilson! 48 points is just crazy!! I think he just needs to be more consistent in his games. or at least Concentrate in his defense if his offense is off and Vice Versa.
@ Leon Kilat
Before this game i got all my chips on Jimbo mainly because of his consistency and partly because i’m from baste. but after this game. man! i don’t know! haha. Definitely gave me something to think about.
Nice Question thou.
HA???
Pati si Marlou Aquino nasa NCAA na rin? Baket? Wala ng kumuha sa kanya sa PBA. Wawa naman. Nambugbug kasi eh.
Saan sya naglalaro. Sa San beda ba?
@Marge de G
Si Ninoy San Beda rin pero sumalangit na,
@leon kilat
why not include jazul in the mix? he has taken a lot of big shots in tight games for letran, more than either aquino and wilson have for their respective teams.
@ Leon Kilat
talaga si ninoy taga san beda? how cute naman
sana ma-meet ko sya sa heaven. haay
@Kilamar13
i think jazul being a clutch player is already a given and thus Leon kilat purposedly narrowed down his comparison between wilson and aquino.
besides, if i’m not mistaken along with gio ciriacruz, these two, wilson and aquino, are the leaders for the season mvp plum.
“The way the other teams are playing, they are already at their peak “ – Coach Vanguardia
talk about a loaded statement, obviously he’s only worrying about the two teams who’re ahead of him. is he referring to baste or to san beda?
can’t fault vanguardia though, he has yet to unleash etame joe this season. so in actuality of the three top teams this season – sscr, san beda and jru, it seems that jru has the most upside left for the homestretch.
speaking of etame joe i saw this guy play over the summer before he got injured and while he is raw he definitely has a nose for the ball, he’s just as good as sam ekwe in terms of manning the paint and he also has a midrange jumper. the only thing i didn’t see was a lowpost game. but all in all this guy has the potential to be a defensive stopper. oh and did i also mention that he’s BIG?
@Leon Kilat
I would take Jimbo over Wilson as he is the more consistent scorer, for now. I think he haven’t scored less than 10 this season. I believe though if Etame Joe will be playing next game onwards, Wilson will be more confident and be more consistent knowing there’s 2 big guys who can pluck the rebound if ever he misses a shot.
@Observer
I see. Aquino and wilson sure are having breakout seasons this year, But between the two, i’d take aquino.
Kelan kaya makakapg laro si etame joe?? he’s suiting up na db? kaso hndi lng ginagamit..
@Observer
Low post will be Sena’s job. Etame does not need to score. As you mentioned, he has the potential to be a defensive stopper. So all he has to do is to pluck those rebounds and swat opponents shots. He can leave the scoring to Wilson, Sena, Agas & Cagoco. You’re right, they really have the upside that is “if” Etame comes to play.
@Observer
Ekwe didn’t have much of a post move either in his first year in SBC. His job was to grab the boards and be an intimidating presence in the paint. But i think they will try to get the most out of etame joe. why just settle for him being a defensive presence, when he can be a force at both ends of the court just like ekwe was as he developed his game. If they get a good coach for Etame Joe to teach him post moves like they did for Sam then there’s no way but up for JRU.
@john
he may be playing well, scoring 20 per game and is on a team with an 11-0 record but i’m not 100% sold on aquino. why?
for me wilson has one intangible as an edge and that’s experience.
bear in mind that in all their playing years with their respective schools wilson has been the more consistent player. he has been a key contributor – not only in points mind you – ever since and he has been battle tested.
aquino’s performance for me right now is more of a flash in pan. don’t get me wrong, what he’s doing is great but there’s just something about his game that i’m sold on. to cite, i don’t think he’s a good defender and i also don’t think that he can rebound the ball.
lastly, the upside on wilson is that he is also the more athletic player of the two.
@Baste
etame joe is on the active roster but vanguardia is obviously saving him for the battles versus sscr and san beda. who knows the bombers may find themselves in a tight game one of these days and that may force vanguardia to bring in joe.
GO RIZAL!!
nice game BENILDE..
congrats..^^
@Observer
That’s why i said to Leon Kilat, for now. As in my previous post i said that “if’ Etame comes in, Wilson will be more confident. It’s a fact that shooters becomes more confident when they know there’s a big guy waiting to pluck their miss. If he’s more confident, then he can be then more consistent. The point for now is that Wilson’s consistency. No doubt about it he’s way better than Jimbo but when he plays bad, that’s it, he’s not able to recover the whole game. On Jimbo’s case, he still can meet or at least score close to his average. Jimbo’s problem though as you said is his defense but it’s really what most scorers are struggling with. It can be patched up though with by good team defense. Anyways, they’re both young players and they can improve what they lack for now.
Excellent performance by JM Wilson, iba talaga pag naginit yan si JM haha idol. Kung ganyan lage laro ni Wilson eh no doubt na kayang kaya ng JRU ang Baste. Anyway congrats for the win.
ANIMO ’08
@marge de guzman : hello. c willy wilson po nsa barangay ginebra at hindi sa san miguel pero under ng san miguel corporation. he3
@Marge
Ninoy SBC Elem and HS; UP Law.
@Kilamart13
JM WIlson ang focus kasi thread niya ito. As for Jimbo Aquino, mainit siya ngayon makalipas ang ilang taon sa doghouse dahil mas sikat sina Viray at Gagamboy Ballesteros. RJ Jazul is definitely a clutch player. One of the best, but he has already broken out.
galing2 po talaga ni JOHN WILSON!!!
grabeh!!
ASTIG!!!
go kua…
sana ipagpa2loy mo lang
po ean…
sana po maging
MVP ka…
*o la magrereact ha*

Go Rizal!
wilson did a hell of a job..and he’s starting to be comfy now. hope etame joe would play for the shaw quintet para mas interesting. Its gonna be a rough ride to the top 4. I hope baste would be consistent still, wag sanang “banderang kapos”. beda is starting to make its run, like jru. anyways, congrats jru and beda! kita-kits sa semis. No. 4 spot still up for grabs.
bravo baste!
@ observer
i don’t see joe as alas of the jru. as what i saw during the pre-season games how much more now when he is still rehabilating from the injury. he can dunk but that’s it, in other words he cannot dominate that easily.he is still a project player but vanguardia is still trying to hype him.my assessment is he cannot play 100 % until the end of the year.
Nice points and opinions..
I’m h0pin 4 d best for my team..
Go Heavy Bombers
Explode!!!
nice one kidlat
but i also agree with one of the commentor in including RJ JAZUL.. if i weren’t a rizalian i would still chose WILSON. wilson with his first, second and third year is questionable. but this year. i think that question mark is now an exclamation point. jazul is a leader. wilson is a go to guy. and jimbo is a shooting guard. (hehe)
@lariza
yes jimbo is just a shooting guard but he can deliver in big games and can played a strong game against strong teams while wilson is questionable… if you want some proof watch the 1st round game of the stags and the bombers.
