After a heartbreaking 3 overtime loss in the 1st round, the Arellano Chiefs steam rolled to their 4th straight victory with a 82-72 win over the College of Saint Benilde Blazers on Aug 19 at the Filoil Flying V Arena. Gio Ciriacruz posted a career-high performance of 31 points and 16 rebounds trounced the Blazers without any production from their leading scorer, Jeff Morial. The Chiefs posted their biggest lead, 50-30, midway thru the 3rd period after a basket by Isiah Ciriacruz.
The Chiefs had a 16-point margin at the end of the 1st half but Chuck Dalanon and Jorey Tajonera led a 3rd quarter rally then grabbed the lead for the 1st time in the ballgame, 72-71, after Mc Abolucion made a lay up with 1:57 minutes left in the 3rd period.
Gio Ciriacruz converted 2 crucial free throws to give the Chiefs a comfortable 3 point lead with 50 seconds left in regulation. Arellano out rebounded the Blazers, 44-30. Chuck Dalanon led the Blazers with 14 points and 8 rebounds on a losing cause.
“We were slow to adjust that’s why we committed a lot of turnovers. We wanted to go zone when they went small, instead we went for a 1-2-2 formation. Fortunately for us, our ploy worked because they weren’t hitting their outside shotsâ€, said Arellano head coach Junji Ablan after the game.
I told them not to relax until the final buzzer, Coach Ablan added.
