Fighting Maroons shock champions Ateneo

KATIPUNAN has a new king, at least for the first round.
The University of the Philippines scored arguably the biggest upset in college hoops in years, clipping the erstwhile unbeaten Ateneo de Manila University, 68-58 in UAAP Season 72 at the Philsports Arena last July 26.
Everything seemed to go Ateneo’s way in the first half as it contained the Fighting Maroons’ attack. In fact, Blue Eagles mentor Norman Black even resorted to fielding in some of his second-stringers in an attempt to get the bench going as early as possible. What was to come, however, was completely unimaginable.
State University, clad in its new, black jerseys for the second straight game, launched a 12-0 blast to open the second half, a run that gave the Maroons the lead for good. Rookie forward Mark Juruena’s long two with 7:48 in the third period handed UP the advantage, 37-35, while Arvin Braganza capped off the lethal run with a breakaway layup to extend the lead to six. UP also stifled the Ateneo attack, holding it to six points in the third period.
The Blue Eagles never managed to get back into the game in the final period as Woody Co and Mark Lopez anchored a tough Diliman stance to give their school its first win in three outings. Ateneo, meanwhile, suffered its first defeat and dropped to a tie for first with University of Sto. Tomas at 3-1.
Sophomore Mark Lopez and Junior Woody Co provided the firepower the Fighting Maroons needed to hand the Hail Mary Squad their first loss this season thus preventing Ateneo a sweep of the first round. The UP Fighting Maroons opened the 1st period with a 6-0 blast.
Co and Lopez led the gallant Fighting Maroons with 15 points apiece. Reigning league Most Valuable Player Rabeh Al-Hussaini, meanwhile, towed the Blue Eagles with 17 markers and six boards.
UP coach Aboy Castro said, “We just wanted to show that we can execute well not only on offense but also defense. We just had a more focused practice and we just wanted to execute better in the end. We knew we could play with them so we just increased our intensity. This is the first time we played them in a year. I hope the boys continue to work hard and focus more since in our next outing, we’ll be playing a tough FEU team.â€

what an UPset! XD
congrats to fighting maroons!
No to b2b defeats for Ateneo
4-1
One Big Fight!
Black was booted as head coach of SMB because of suspicious outcomes. Why do you think no team in the PBA gave him a coaching job after his stint with SMB where he won I think 5 titles including a grand slam?
calling alf and company… wherever you are guys, we’re not gonna bite… i’m sure all of you ateneans and pretenders alike are tamed right now… UP pacified your team
wow..im from csb, ateneo grabe. natalo aq sa ods pero as a lasalian brother from lasalle main olats kau eagles, kme nga csb lng…tinalo pa kau ng up……wow!!!i hope ure at hope celebrating with the dirt money
^
Hey joshua, I’m from csb too. Don’t think of benilde as a scrunny team, we’re winning naman ah :) Of course we can support each other as one la salle but i could just wish young benildeans like you could stop comparing the two. Our colors may be the same but we’re totally different, we have our own league.
As for UP, congratulations for the win! Shocking but you guys deserved it! I’m sure Ateneo will pounce back soon though. :)
This season just got more exciting!
Nakupo, revenge of the fallen.
Just when I thought the Maroons were headed to a potential 0-14 win-loss record came this news of them doing a huge upset by beating the Blue Eagles. What else can I say but congratulations to them! UP played great 40 minutes of basketball yesterday and it seemed liked Ateneo just took UP for granted- and paid dearly for doing so.
I just hope that UP would be able to sustain this kind of basketball all the way until the end of this season’s basketball competitions. The Maroons have the resources to reach it to the Final Four and it would be much of a betrayal if this team would not reach greater heights all because of the misdoings of a certain few.
Congrats to UP MBT!
Humanda kayo FEU!
hek hek hek
oh it was an upset..
Ateneo played well but UP was too much both on offense and defense. I’m not downing Ateneo for what happened. I was just impressed at how UP played the game of the season. I think La Salle should learn from the Fighting Maroons. Even the other teams should be humbled by what UP did. I hope our game with Ateneo will turn out as exciting as this game.
Bilog ang Bola! haha!
mukhang tahimik ang mga atenista at least for a week dahil natalo sila ng up…
I very much agree on you Kid Archer. It was a close game on DLSU and ADU as well, too bad for ADU, their rookie just suddenly suicided. But congrats to DLSU. I’m looking forward to the next Ateneo-Lasalle game. Bring back the Animo :)
Anyways, I never doubted that UP would get a win this season, and boy, when they had the momentum, they definitely can make a run.
Yeah! Like what I’ve mentioned, when U.P. lost to D.L.S.U., that the Fighting Maroons would somehow find a way to avoid a winless season and they responded!Whatever the A.D.M.U.’s excuse, a win is a win and U.P. will take it.I just do hope that the U.P. Fighting Maroons would learn something out of this upset and somehow continue to trim down their turnovers to get more posessions and more chances of making a basket. Also, U.P. like what they’ve done on this game, set half court offense and not run always to avoid TO’s.We’re in dreamland right now, but to be honest we are not expecting big as we know that there are alot of tough teams out there and we are aware that we are still in a developmental stage.Experience and learn, U.P. Fighting Maroons!!!! U.P. FIGHT!!!!!
@mybhench
I live in Xaverville subdivision.. I dont care as well..
@mang tomas
Sorry talaga.
Pssst . . .USTe, looking good!
“WIN or LOOSE.. ITS THE SCHOOL WE CHOOSE!!!”
Great win for UP. They were more active than Ateneo especially in rebounding and defense. Some AdMU players’ heads seemed not in the game. UP played steady in the second half and Ateneo looked frustated. How I wonder if the maroons had limited their turnovers against adu, nu and dlsu, they could have won these games. The UP players seem now know their roles and coach Aboy Castro seems now able to utilize his players effectively. I just hope that this is no fluke. WaLa ng ZERO-14. Nice confidence booster.
@mybhench

Ganun? Sino ang amo mo? Malaki ba magpasweldo? More than 2,500 pesoses? 3 beses ba magpakain? Day off?
I think not.

UP won b’coz of the Benchers my gosh….
@me
You could drop-by to my house and choose the diplomas/awards.etc hanging on the wall that can prove my degrees.
BTW, I own a call center in Ortigas center earning more than the figures you mentioned,..
coach aboy is sooooooooooooo ryt! as in tumpak at paok sa banga….
UP has very good players and when the intensity is there in a game, they really do well… yun nga lang, in their first three games (at least this season ha, kasi ganito din previous seasons eh…)the intensity was present in the 1st half ONLY! grrrhhhh….. as coach aboy said: they need “to execute better in the end”…. this should be done all the time…. oh UP (Men Basketball!), please please finish strong each game!
UP Fight!
It was humiliating for Ateneo and I am confident this will fire up the whole team. Most would say overconfidence led to their defeat…maybe, but I wouldn’t want to take anything away from UP, they did one hell of a job.
I think Rabeh was the missing link. I was observing him the whole game (especially his defense) and I can’t help but feel something suspicious….hmmmmm, thinking about it, most of the odds are against UP so if they won, someone will have a bonanza.
UP BEAT ATENEO WHAT A FIGHT!!!
ASAN NA ANG MGA HAMBOG NA ATENISTA??????????????? UP lang pala katapat niyo… sino ang CHOKER NGAYON???????? when UE Lost to DLSU in Season 71 in the finals dami niyong patutsada kesyo ganito at ganyan… ngayon nakita na ang resulta ng KAYABANGAN!!!!!!!! saan kayo ngayon pupulutin???? AdU and NU is capable of beating you as well kaya sana paghanda niyong mabuti ang laban ng team niyo with them. most on the second round every team is capable of winning. I am hoping that you Ateneans had learned your lessons HUMBLENESS 101….. ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!!!! BOMBA UE IGMA KADIMA….
Congrats to UP!
WIN OR LOSE!
GO ATENEO!!
congrats to UP for a well-deserved win. they really got hot in the 4th and kept draining their threes. it’s really tough to beat a team shooting 89% in the 4th. plus, they took care of the ball really well. good job, maroons.
tough loss for us, but looking at the bright side, this could be good for the eagles. i’ve said it before that a 14-0 record ala UE is never good for a team making a championship run. this loss is a reality check for them. medyo lackluster din talaga yung performance ng ateneo yesterday, and you can’t do that against any team. time to learn from this loss and prepare for the next games.
win or lose, it’s the school i choose.
OBF.
there are flukes in basketabll..but this one im sure isnt..
UP playd their hearts out..they fought for evry looseball, hustled on every rebound and banged bodies against evidently taller and wider oponents..
On paper, UP actually has one of the best line-up this season.. So if they can just get 2 more wins this bround and some more momentum, you brace yourselves..:)
Para sa iyo tara, you had a one big fight! +AMDG
Bitter Pills: Week 3 of UAAP Season 72
When I was a kid, and every time I was sick, my mom would make me drink this pinkish pill that tasted awful. She’d try to console me by saying, “Mapait iyan, pero gagaling ka. Mabuti iyan.â€
It worked, most of the time.
After watching my alma mater blow a 6-point halftime bulge, and self-destruct against an erstwhile also-ran, I felt like a sick kid all over again.
As it stands, there is no longer any team that can claim immaculateness (yes, there is such a word). Some gained wins, and some lost games. Thus is the way of sports.
If you’re a UST fan, you’ve got to love Pido Jarencio’s dynamic duo of Dylan Ababou and Khasmi Mirza. Perhaps the only twosome that has met, and even exceeded, everyone’s expectations, Ababou and Mirza have sparked the Tigers to 3 wins in 4 games. Their latest victims? Oh no biggie, just the UE Red Warriors.
Dylan and Khasim, combining for 48 points, bailed out their España-based teammates, 92-88. Highlighting another high-octane affair, the Growling Tigers made a mad late-game dash to stymie the Recto-based Warriors. After falling behind by 11 at lemon time, UE blitzed the striped cats with 35 points in the third canto to claim the advantage going into the payoff period, 71-65. UST, though, roared back in the final 10 minutes as Ababou, a potential league scoring leader, and super soph Allen (or Allein?) Maliksi banged in the big buckets to secure the W. Slowly but surely, the 2006 Champions are making a curious case for the Final 4, and we now have Coach Jarencio’s 3 Ps philosophy yielding 3 victories. Can they maintain their torrid shooting or will the law of averages catch up?
If UST has far exceeded its pre-season prognosis, then, in contrast, FEU has underachieved tremendously. After dismantling the arrows of De La Salle a week earlier, Coach Glenn Capacio’s wards seemed lethargic against the dangerous Adamson Falcons. After staring at an 8-point deficit with only 10 minutes to go, FEU had to look to their own version of the dynamic duo in RP Team mainstay Mandy Barroca and rookie sensation RR Garcia to eke out the squeaker, 63-60. Though the Falcons were game all throughout, they just couldn’t manage to find the intensity to close out this match, which can also be said for their second test of the week opposite the Green Archers.
Despite the explosion of back-up guard Lester Avarez, Coach Leo Austria’s wards still found a way to let their golden nugget slip away. Riding high on Alvarez’s heroics, the Falcons were about to score a major upset until DLSU regained its bearings to send the game to an extra session and claim the triumph. No thanks to missed freebies and a couple of Hyram Bagatsing triples, the San Marcelino cagers saw another ‘could’ve-been’ sink down the drain. They were supposed to be fighting for a Final 4 slot, but the way things are going they’re simply fighting for their lives. The Archers, on the other hand, are only too happy to level their card.
Prior to escaping the claws of the Crashing Falcons, DLSU picked up win number one against the Fighting Maroons. Led by veterans James Mangahas and Bader Malabes, Coach Franz Pumaren’s team ran roughshod over UP after trailing by as many as 11 early on. The Green&White leaned on a strong second half to outlast their Diliman counterparts, 73-63. With Joshua Webb and Bagatsing raining bombs from the parking lot, DLSU refused to go down 0-3 for the first time in their UAAP tenure.
Now talking about going down, Henry Sy’s newest acquisition seems to be going nowhere but. ‘Waylaid’ seems to be NU’s present mantra as they were shackled by FEU, 82-57. Behind their troop of magnificent mavens, the Tamaraws were on cruise control against the hapless Bulldogs. The Moraytans finally looked every bit like the title contenders they were billed to be, as they kept NU below 60 markers. This seems to augur well for the Green&Gold, especially since they’ve proven that anybody can step up in any given situation – Garcia, Barroca, Aldrech Ramos, or JR Cawaling. Pick your poison and feel the pain.
Ateneo certainly felt the pain against their cross-road rivals – the Fighting Maroons. Going into the contest with a pristine 3-0 slate, the Blue Eagles were tagged to rip UP to shreds, but it was easier said than done. In fact, it was never done.
Behind former Xavier School stalwart Woody Co, the ‘Dilimanians’ dismantled the Eagles in the second half. The Maroons, by limiting the Blue&White to a measly 6 points in the third quarter, overhauled a sizeable deficit and converted it into a significant lead heading into the final 10 minutes, 46-41.
The rain continued to pour inside and outside the Philsports Arena, and Ateneo was drenched in maroon-hued droplets. The Eagles just looked listless as UP brought their A-game, and showcased a clinic on ‘how-to-beat-an-unbeaten-defending-champion.’
Co and Mark Lopez combined for 30 points to spearhead the Iskolar ng Bayan charge, and hand Ateneo its initial loss of Season 72. It was a truly bitter pill to swallow for Norman Black and the champs. Perhaps it was needed, too.
Painful as it is to admit, it was evident that there was no sense of urgency in the Ateneans’ body language. They were caught either by the complacency that accompanies a perfect record or by the pressure of maintaining their 14-game winning streak (dating to last season). Regardless of the reason, we were just caught with one of our worst games in recent memory by a squad that displayed one of its best.
I guess this answers the question if we’re peaking too early. Clearly we’ve hit the dirt with this 10-point loss. I just hope that, like my mom’s bitter pill, this loss can make us better down the stretch. This is especially important since our next three opponents are, to date, the three teams that have handed UP their previous three defeats – Adamson, NU, and De La Salle.
My first article revolved around the idea that 2009 was shaping up to be like 2004, and the last time we lost to UP was in that season – September 2, 2004 to be exact. That was also the year DLSU started slow, then ran off with the title in the end (of course everyone knows they had to relinquish it due to certain… ummm… inconsistencies). Could it be history repeating itself? We’ll just have to wait and see.
Win or lose. It’s the school we choose.
One Big Fight!
Im an FEU alumnus, but i just want to give Kudos to the UP Fighting Maroons for crashing down the eagles..Good Job!
To admu learn your lesson, thats the problem with you guys, you tend to belittle teams that are in the bottom dont be complacent until you hear the final buzzer, as long as the clock is still ticking there is still hope, and dont you guys look forward of having a 14-0 record.. i just remember when we(FEU) dethrowned you last 2003, Gerard Jones(FEU stalwart)once said when we won the championship “be humble..humble lang tayo”
Good luck to FEU and up on August 1.
AND NOW, Ladies and Gentlemen, we are guaranteed of a Final4 in the post-season.
And with La Salle finding its endgame poise despite a line-up struggling to find its chemistry,
with UST squeaking past UE,
and with UP trouncing the supposedly Almighty Blue Eagles…
…the league is starting to get really interesting.
The top contenders Ateneo, FEU, and UE suddenly take second looks at the teams they thought will end up at the bottom half of the charts.
@marc_f
ROTFL!!!!! Just take it out on Adamson. (no guarantee of victory, though)
“You could drop-by to my house and choose the diplomas/awards.etc hanging on the wall that can prove my degrees.

Good win for UP. Not taking anything against them, they played well. They limited Ateneo to its worst scoring output since 2005, shot 89% in the fourth. Ateneo is a no excuse team and so should the fans.
For those saying that Norman gives games, give yourself a break, he was just with his lineup at the start. I think thats a good thing to prepare the team when MVP and Defensive Player leaves next year.
One Big Fight!
this is the fun part…yung mga nang-aasar sa blogs… but i don’t know why it has to become too personal. it’s just a game guys…we win some, and lose some…that’s how it goes.
to recylcle, joshua, accenture, shy, balotpenoy, greenminded, uaap, fortitude-excellence-uprightness, wye, jaypee, hahaha – why are you so so irritated with ateneo? bakit kayo galit na galit? i just want to know why. mayabang ang mga atenista? bakit kaya? kung may ipag-yayabang, then why not?
why such passion in your negative comments? well, i guess, without passion, life will be boring. ;)
congratulations to UP…you are actually my second favorite team after the Ateneo Blue Eagles. You played your game well and with heart. one big fight!
