Red Warriors drub NU, nab second win

NATIONAL UNIVERSITY learned that winning a basketball game requires finishing off an opponent for 40 minutes.
Despite racing to an early first quarter lead, the Bulldogs succumbed a more experienced and relentless University of the East, 73-59 in UAAP Season 72 at the Philsports Arena last July 19.
After a furious 10-2 start, coach Manny Dandan’s troops got a dose of their own medicine as Paul Lee led UE’s second quarter scoring parade, one that helped swing the momentum towards the Recto outfit. The ex-San Sebastian Staglet poured in six of his 14 points in that period, carrying his team to a five-point halftime advantage.
Things went from bad to worse for NU as Lee and veterans Pari Llagas and Val Acuña combined for 23 points in the third quarter. Llagas’ layup with 1:10 left in that canto gave UE its largest lead of the game, 59-45. Sparingly-used Erwin Duran then made life more miserable for the Sampaloc five as he grabbed a career-high nine boards to solidify the Red Warriors’ hold on the game.
Llagas led the now 2-1 Red Warriors with 16 points and five rebounds, while Lee rattled in 14 markers. Mervin Baloran towed the Bulldogs with 19 points.
A key statistic was UE’s domination of the glass as it outrebounded NU, 46-34. Its running game also proved crucial as it churned out 24 fastbreak points, 15 more than the Bulldogs’ total.
In the pressroom, UE mentor Lawrence Chongson said, “After our loss to Ateneo, na-realize naming na marami pa kaming kakaining bigas. In this game, we allowed too many easy points, kaya we adjusted in the second quarter where in-improve naming yung communication namin on court.â€

The way things going on right now it is impossible for DLSU or AdU to be in the final four. But who knows baka maka tie ng DLSU ang UST sa no. 4 spot kaya lang quotient system ang pagbabasehan lamang ang UST.
Despite of this reality we at UE Red Tribe Hoping against hope that luck would be on our side this time around. Baka naman makuha sa perseverance ng warriors and the coaching staff specially coach lawrence.
