Ex-team B standout lifts Ateneo past UST

THE SMALLEST guy on the court dished out the biggest performance of his life.
A year after being relegated to Ateneo de Manila University’s team B, 5’6†Emman Monfort put on a shooting clinic for all to see as he piloted the defending champions past a dumbfounded University of Sto. Tomas, 93-77, in UAAP Season 72 at the Philsports Arena last July 19.
The Iloilo native cashed in with a career-high 20 points, going 6-for-9 from long range while hauling down five rebounds in just 16 minutes of action to tear apart a hapless Growling Tiger defense that gave the diminutive playmaker all the space he needed to sink his triples.
It was all Ateneo from the get-go as Monfort, Ryan Buenafe and Eric Salamat exploited some of the holes in the UST zone defense through crisp penetrations and excellent recognitions. Buenafe and Salamat, two former San Sebastian College-Recoletos Staglets, each tallied 14 points for the 3-0 Blue Eagles, the only undefeated team left in the league.
On the defensive end, the Blue and White stifled the Growling Tigers’ vaunted fastbreak attack, holding it to 10 points. Forced to settle for set plays in the half court, coach Pido Jarencio’s unit ran into a brick wall and shot a measly 33 percent from the field.
Former University of Manila standout Allein Maliksi, who missed a substantial part of last season due to an ACL injury, racked up a career-high 20 points in a losing cause, while Dylan Ababou added 17.
Ateneo coach Norman Black said, “I’m happy he’s [Monfort] a part of the team again. The reason we placed him in team B last year is for him to hone his point guard skills more and it was evident in today’s ballgame. I’m happy the entire bench came out to play today. I just challenge the team to get off a good start.â€
The scores:
Ateneo 93 – Monfort 20, Salamat 14, Buenafe 14, Al Hussaini 13, Salva 8, Tiongson 7, Long 7, Baclao 4, Golla 2, de Chavez 2, Chua 2, Sumalinog 0, Reyes 0, Gonzaga 0, Burke 0, Austria 0.
UST 77 – Maliksi 20, Ababou 17, Mirza 13, Teng 6, Bautista 6, Afuang 5, Mariano 4, Green 2, Fortuna 2, Camus 2, Ungria 0, Felix 0, Cam 0.
Quarter scores: 30-21, 52-35, 68-49, 93-77.

the first shall be last and the last shall be first…….in season 73.
Tsamba lang mga panalo ng
Ateneo sa La Salle last Season 71.
Suerte lang ang mga victory natin
sa FEU,UE and UST sa Season 72.
Sana makatsamba tayo ng panalo
sa La Salle ulit this Season 72.
Kahit 1 na lang muna sa 1st Round.
Fellow Blue Eagles,in HUMILITY
there is a lot of PRIDE!
Animo ‘teneo.
@arnaiz-morales, hindi naman humility tawag diyan eh.
nanginsulto ng kapwa tapos nagcheer??? ano yun??? doble kara??? tsk tsk…
ano ba tlga kulay mo?
@uaap fan
@eh
“nanginsulto ng kapwa tapos nagcheer??? ano yun??? doble kara??? tsk tsk…
ano ba tlga kulay mo?”
Yung binigay ng kanang kamay, babaiwiin ng kaliwa.
Maybe the guy who wrote the stuff you referred to is not REALLY an Atenesian. Akala nila cute. Yung hubris nagpapanggap na pride, They’re quite an amusing species. 150 years of continuoous inbreeding has led to this. Oooo, wag kayo pikon.
Whew! Monfort and all his 3pt shots really hurt us yesterday! Didn’t imagine Ateneo has good 3pt shooters this season..
Congrats Ateneo! Move on Tigers and go for 3-1 vs. UE this Sunday..
@matteo ricci
At sana wag mo masyado gasgasin yang ‘switik’ na kantsaw mo a. Ilang beses mo na nagamit yan? :)
Swerte ng ateneo mainit si Monfort. I dont believe he will be shooting that well game in and game out. But i admire their discipline, going for the extra pass. Looks like Norman really honed everyones 3 points skills to enable rabeh to work the post. This season looks good the Blue and White. Although FEU is still a monster to reckon with. Hope we win it all.
Tiongson will stand out in a few years. smooth shooter, masmahusay pa kay jai.
@weezer
. . . switik pa rin,
Walang gasgas ang salitang iyan. The teflon on it will last forever. But the word thanks you anyway.
^horrible diction… teflon…seriously…find a better word for the comparison… it’s just a horribly awkward sentence to be said or read…
“dumbfounded University of Sto. Tomas”
Ouch…What an adjective…
Bago pa maligaw ang usapan sa walang ka-kwenta-kwentang name callings, let’s go back to basketball.
I thought coach Norman Black would go back to the usual strategy of limiting UST below 60 pts, but it seems that Ateneo beat UST this time in their own game, high-scoring and up-tempo. But despite that, the defense was still there, sure UST scored 77 points, but Ababou was off rhythm all game, but I still commend him, he never gave up and scored 17 points.
And what can I say, yesterday we witnessed a post-Al Hussaini, season 73 Ateneo team, they played great, still in championship form even without the MVP on the floor.
This season would definitely be great for the Eagles.
re: arnaiz-morales
hindi chamba yun sir. that’s false humility naman. sagasa talaga ang ateneo team ngayon, they are set to maul the opposition, that’s all. walang yabang dun, they have all the go-to guys this season and everyone in the team is a potential explosive device. malakas lang talaga, di nila kasalanan yun to be needlessly humble, yung mga followers lang ang mayayabang – ateneo has the bragging rights again this season
^Digs ako dyan watson-littaua
@arnaiz morales
you should be from UST. We all understand why you feel that way since Ateneo heavily disgraced your team yesterday.
the only bad thing i noticed for that ateneo in that game was rabeh losing his temper again and he was visibly pissed that he wasnt getting the ball at the post, which made him work less on defense. other than that, ateneo played perfect ball. salva got pwnd by mirza, but hey, even lbj gets dunked on sometimes.
monfort is the man. i’m really happy for this kid. now i can’t help but wonder what our team would have looked like if baldos was still there.
Pikon mga taga uste?
Whahahahahahaha.
Anu ba kayu? Expected naman na mahina kayu ah.
But still a good enough effort.
Parang Eman Monfort.
hehehe
One more thing,
Atenista talaga.
Itayo ang bandila nang Federasyun!
Hehehehe, joke lang.
Sportsmandhip rules, man.
Salva…how does it feel?
haha ;p inluv nnman ako ky buenafe.. whaha.. such a gud guy.. heLping a tiger ;p nakz!
What’s wrong with Salva? I think what he did is even commendable, he went after a fast break shot, not many players, even in NBA, has that kind of persistence.
And he came from the back, it was almost a block, but yeah it failed, but he wasn’t posterized.
I dont know if you guys noticed but despite the physical play and everything there seems to be no animosity between the tigers and the eagles. When mirza got cramps, buenafe helped him and Eric was talking to him. When Eagles fall down, you would see Camus apologize and help them up. Great class by 2 great teams. I think these 2 schools really have great respect for each other. When they shook hands you could see that everyone was sincere. Thats something that probably wasnt caught on TV but it was great to see both teams sharing that moment.
@ weezer
Salva was posterized.
@Tagamasid
He wasn’t dunked on… so for me he wasn’t posterized. But what the heck. Yeah, it was only 2pts and it seems that it didn’t boost the morale of UST that much either.
@Tiger Power
you’re asking salva how does it feel? i’m sure he’s receiving a lot of love from the ateneo community for the effort that he showed on that play. it was pure hustle, and if you look at the replay, it was a quite good effort since he almost had a hand on the ball. it was just that mirza was one step ahead of him. still, it showed the heart of the salva kid and his defensive mindset to go after every shot.
black’s timeout was to ensure that the momentum wouldn’t shift to ust with that dunk. and guess what, it didn’t.
sunod sunod na ang talo ng ust!
UE should come up w/ their own ORIGINAL cheer, I noticed most of them are pirated from other schools. before UE was known as simply “UE warriors” now UE red warriors???? the colors is’nt red and white. the warrior in their logo is more of a lapu-lapu type of a warriror, suddenly it became an indian. do they just make up these things w/ out even researching? no significance whatsoever??? there’s no tradition behind.
talked to nonoy a coupla wks ago, one of their goals is to give emman a championship this year… he even calls emman “the dynamo”! galing talaga this kid, super unassuming and passionate talaga. kaya naman very much blessed with his talent. accd to emman, kung pwede lang daw everyday may game mas gusto nya! hehe, congrats to the blue eagles!
1bigfight!!
@rizal library
hopia ka ba? “Diction” is associated with the spoken word – not the written. You just got facialed. Stay out of it. At least the weezer talks straight.

Well said,sirs.
@arnaiz-morales-We know where your
belief and loyalty lies.We also know
you were young enough then to watch
our Brother Blue Eagles of 1969 as they
soared smoothly to the NCAA crown.
So far,this year,our team reminds us
somewhat of how this great scoring team of
yesteryears worked very hard developing their offensive patterns and shooting skills.
Now we have,Buenafe,Monfort,Reyes,Tiongson,Salva,
Long,Baclao,Al Hussaini,etc.,etc.all capable
of scoring double figures.Wowee on Coach Norman’s
teachings in the art of defense and psycho warfare.
Boomalaka kaya kaya!
On the side, sana naman next time, lakasan ang AIRCON!
I can’t help feeling resentful of the price hike in ticket prices in PhilSports tuloy sa init dun kahapon. Kawawa naman the UST mascot who was probably dizzy from the heat in Ultra and the added heat brought on by his tail-less tiger costume na kamukha ni Winnie the Pooh (with stripes). That heat, I would imagine, cannot be good for the players too!! I remember my own UAAP days in the UP CHK Gym, I fainted from the heat! During the game, while on the playing court! Tsk tsk tsk…
Congrats Ateneo Blue Eagles!
To UST Growling Tigers, Move on for 3-1, one game at a time.
Meron kami nakikita pag-asa sa UST. They were able to contain Rabeh. We have the 2nd round elim to get even.
UST and Ateneo respect each other, I saw Chua consoling Teng after the final buzzer. Buenafe helping Mirza and Camus saying sorry for Salva.
Ganaremos!
@alf
actually the UE “indians” have been around for a while now, remember they used to have cheerleaders dressed up as indians complete with the feathers and axes, sometimes they don’t have tops, or at least for the guys, lol
Ateneo, Congrats.. ang galing talaga..
UST, bawi-bawi next game.. Go Tigers for Final Four!!!
after Jainamite its gotta be Pocket Rocket lol
@weezer
“I thought coach Norman Black would go back to the usual strategy of limiting UST below 60 pts, but it seems that Ateneo beat UST this time in their own game, high-scoring and up-tempo.”
It was mentioned that this was Black’s plan in 1Q, but hey why not let the boys play when they’re playing so damn good?
UST actually played the best defense against Ateneo in this game, eliminate Rabeh. Annoy him, force him to get 2 fouls early so you won’t be seeing him for a long while. It’s just that UST’s offense was dry when the Ateneo bench was sizzling.
I did saw some old UE logos w/ blue color and their warrior is like filipino tribesman/warrior type. Lapu-Lapu exactly. news clips from early 80′s and 70′s w/ their lapu-lapu face as their logo. lapu-lapu is miles away from an indian. anyway I think san beda is’nt intersted in joining the uaap. there wont be a problem. but from what i heard Letran and JRU are the ones who want to transfer.
if either Letran or SBC wants to join, they have to fulfill the univ reqs first, othwerise JRU is ready to join
Monfort averaged 40++ ppg back in high school 3 years ago
I think the eagles and archer teams were class acts yesterday. You could really see that with Salva, Camus, Buenafe and Mirza.
As to Salva’s ummm, “posterization”, it’s part of the game and I was really impressed that he hussled even if he knew he could have been posterized. I’m glad as well that the eagles don’t have a stick stuck up their @sses and take things personally or too seriously.
According to folks in gameface, Chua was ribbing Salva when he sat down and Rabeh was laughing at Salva with Mirza after the game.
@alf and Tax
so what if the UE logo looks like an indian, at least what we are portraying are actually human in form. care to notice that the only 2 teams that uses a human for are UE and La Salle, and so with the cheering, they copy or express movement by a human kind not some dumb animals. And if im not mistaken, the kind of people who actually do such thing as imitating animal movements are the so called indians,tribesmen, come to think about it, who do you think act more like indians?
Ooops. I meant the tigers not the archers.
@ wildcard
FYI, UP also uses a Human for their logo. Although I must admit I have no idea why they chose to call themselves fighting maroons. Anyway, regarding your comments about the use of animals by some schools in their logos/teams, I believe it is the traits of these animals that matter and not their form. UST chose the tiger to give the impression that they are a feirce team. Adamson, as their team name implies wants to tell us that they will soar over everyone else. I believe Ateneo also wants to give that impression, plus the fact that eagles are (arguably) the king of the skies. The same goes for all the other teams using animals in their team names/logos. it is the traits of these that made the school use them for their team names so please stop calling these teams dumb just because of using animals to associate with their team name. And for the record there is nothing warrior-like with the way the UE cheering squad moves. LOL.

@arjay
I purposely didnt include UP cause im waiting for people like you to clear that the fighting maroon thing is indeed human in form.
I said dumb animals not dumb schools or team.
What i’m trying to tell to alf and tax is that the team’s logo or symbol should not be an issue since IMO other school’s logo or symbol is worse than ours in the way they represent it.
