Ex-team B standout lifts Ateneo past UST

THE SMALLEST guy on the court dished out the biggest performance of his life.

A year after being relegated to Ateneo de Manila University’s team B, 5’6” Emman Monfort put on a shooting clinic for all to see as he piloted the defending champions past a dumbfounded University of Sto. Tomas, 93-77, in UAAP Season 72 at the Philsports Arena last July 19.

The Iloilo native cashed in with a career-high 20 points, going 6-for-9 from long range while hauling down five rebounds in just 16 minutes of action to tear apart a hapless Growling Tiger defense that gave the diminutive playmaker all the space he needed to sink his triples.

It was all Ateneo from the get-go as Monfort, Ryan Buenafe and Eric Salamat exploited some of the holes in the UST zone defense through crisp penetrations and excellent recognitions. Buenafe and Salamat, two former San Sebastian College-Recoletos Staglets, each tallied 14 points for the 3-0 Blue Eagles, the only undefeated team left in the league.

On the defensive end, the Blue and White stifled the Growling Tigers’ vaunted fastbreak attack, holding it to 10 points. Forced to settle for set plays in the half court, coach Pido Jarencio’s unit ran into a brick wall and shot a measly 33 percent from the field.

Former University of Manila standout Allein Maliksi, who missed a substantial part of last season due to an ACL injury, racked up a career-high 20 points in a losing cause, while Dylan Ababou added 17.

Ateneo coach Norman Black said, “I’m happy he’s [Monfort] a part of the team again. The reason we placed him in team B last year is for him to hone his point guard skills more and it was evident in today’s ballgame. I’m happy the entire bench came out to play today. I just challenge the team to get off a good start.”

The scores:

Ateneo 93 – Monfort 20, Salamat 14, Buenafe 14, Al Hussaini 13, Salva 8, Tiongson 7, Long 7, Baclao 4, Golla 2, de Chavez 2, Chua 2, Sumalinog 0, Reyes 0, Gonzaga 0, Burke 0, Austria 0.

UST 77 – Maliksi 20, Ababou 17, Mirza 13, Teng 6, Bautista 6, Afuang 5, Mariano 4, Green 2, Fortuna 2, Camus 2, Ungria 0, Felix 0, Cam 0.

Quarter scores: 30-21, 52-35, 68-49, 93-77.

    70 years old na yung “Blue Eagle the King” aka “Fly High” and 60 years old na yung Blue Eagle Gym. Will ask about the “One Big Fight”… but it would surely be no older than the Padre Faura days (late 40’s to early 50’s). The battle cry “fight” is actually a take off from the original alma mater song “Hail, Ateneo Hail” popularized in war-time Ateneo.

    @inyong lingkod

    yes, those are the lyrics… i’m talking about hte titles only… the song we know now as “Fly High” was originally preceded by the chant we know now as the “blue eagle spelling”, that’s why it used to be known as the “blue eagle the king” song…
