Stags now 4-0 after escaping EAC upset bid

SAN SEBASTIAN College-Recoletos survived a serious upset bid launched by Emilio Aguinaldo College, 87-73, at the resumption of NCAA Season 85 hoops at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan City last July 17.
A tight first quarter was followed by a great all-around game by rookie Calvin Abueva, who helped the Stags race to a 12-point halftime lead. However, San Sebastian still couldn’t find a way to shake off the relentless Generals as they capitalized on the Recto unit’s early penalty situation in the third quarter. Lead EAC guard Argel Mendoza and slotman Ruel Jabaybay led the charge for the guest team as it managed to trim the lead to just three after 30 minutes of play.
The see-saw encounter was punctuated by a 13-2 Stags run to start the final period. With a 17-point lead at the 6:31 mark, San Sebastian coach Ato Agustin decided to field in his third-stringers. This proved costly as EAC mounted its own 11-0 blitz, which forced Agustin to send his starters back in. Eventually, the steady hands of Abueva and Jimbo Aquino sealed the deal for the still-unbeaten Stags.
Abueva topscored for San Sebastain with 17 points and 10 boards while Pamboy Raymundo added 16 markers. Mendoza, meanwhile, led the Generals with 20 points and a season-low one turnover.
After the game, Agustin said, “Medyo nag-experiment kami. Siyempre kaya naming sila kinuha para maglaro, para mabuo ang kumpiyansa nila. Happy kami siyempre to be on top. Sabi ko nga hindi pa tapos, we still have 14 games to go, tapos hindi pa naming nakalaro ang JRU at Letran so we have to be ready for that, and Arellano na hindi biro-birong team yan.â€
The Stags next play Arellano University this Monday, while coach Nomar Isla will be looking for his first NCAA win when his troops square off against Mapua two days later.

lakas ni abueva… running for ROY honors. balance attack ang SSC, inside-out, hustle on defense, saka lakas ng bench. Mhihirapan ang favorites na SBC at JRU.

Hahahaha, I just want to share this story,
Last Thursday, while watching the game between the Eagles and the Warriors on the television, Parry Llagas was taking a free throw and my parents, passing by, saw his face, and shockingly said that that man was Parry Llagas, and was once a jeepney driver at project 3 QC.
Though they are happy for him, playing basketball and getting a scholarship, they really keep asking me if he is really YOUNG enough to play collegiate ball.
To which of course, have no knowledge of answering my parent’s question.
