IT WAS a classic case of the veterans showing up the youngsters.
Jose Rizal University, banking on its four most experienced players, held off a gutsy Arellano University, 88-82 in NCAA Season 85 at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan City last July 15.
Grizzled warriors John Wilson and Marvin Hayes sealed the game for the still-unbeaten Heavy Bombers from the charity stripe, each going 2-for-2 after the Chiefs squandered two opportunities to grab the advantage after trimming the JRU lead to just one, 81-80, with under a minute left to play.
It was a see-saw affair that involved nine lead changes and six deadlocks. Things got heated as early as the 2:12 mark of the opening period, when Hayes was slapped with an unsportsmanlike foul on 5’1†playmaker Leonard Anquilo. An infuriated JRU head coach Ariel Vanguardia rushed onto the playing court and was then slapped with a technical foul himself.
Arellano led by as many as seven points, 32-25, but was put under siege for most of the game by the more experienced Heavy Bombers. A crucial third quarter stretch, capped off by a buzzer-beating triple by Jhe Agas, handed the all-important momentum – one that it did not relinquish – to the Shaw outfit entering the final period.
After the game, Vanguardia said, “I told my boys that I’m not really feeling well today. Arellano is a very tough team to deal with. We were lucky we won this game. But I commend my four veterans who did not let me down today in terms of performance.“ The win puts his team atop the standings at 4-0.
Vanguardia’s “Fab Four†of Hayes, Wilson, Marc Cagoco and JR Sena combined for 70 of the Bombers’ 88 total points. Wilson spearheaded the offensive with 26 points, nine rebounds and seven assists, while Hayes registered a double-double with 16 points and 15 boards. Despite failing to contain the Legarda quintet’s fastbreak attack, which tallied 34 points compared to JRU’s 17, the Bombers took advantage of their size by outrebounding their opponents, 45-27.
Andrian Celada was coach Junjie Ablan’s key man with 19 points and seven rebounds, while the diminutive Anquilo posted a season-high 18 points. With the loss, the Chiefs dropped to 2-2 and a logjam at fourth place with Colegio de San Juan de Letran and College of St. Benilde.
The scores:
JRU 88 – Wilson 26, Sena 17, Hayes 16, Cagoco 11, Bulangis 7, Njei 4, Agas 3, Kabigting 2, Montemayor 2, Apinan 0, Matute 0, Salazar 0.
