Ababou leads UST past NU in high-octane matchup

UNIVERSITY of Sto. Tomas, led by its experienced leader, dished out its vaunted running game for all to see.
Dylan Ababou posted a double-double with 30 points and 10 rebounds to help lead his Growling Tigers past National University, 104-89, in a high-octane showdown in UAAP Season 72 at the Araneta Coliseum last July 16.
The Philippine Developmental Team member, who was held to just 10 points in UST’s opener, exploded for 23 in the first half alone as coach Pido Jarencio’s wards zipped through the porous NU defense en route to a season-high 62 points. As if that wasn’t enough, the Sampaloc outfit allowed the Tigers to shoot an outrageous 63.2 percent field goal clip in the third quarter.
Khasim Mirza aptly supported Ababou with a double-double of his own, canning 19 points and grabbing 15 rebounds. Rookie sensation Jeric Teng also joined in the scoring fray, tallying 13 of his 14 total markers in the first quarter alone.
NU, which convincingly shut down University of the Philippines last Sunday, succumbed to the España quintet’s run-and-gun, smallball offensive and failed to put the clamps on the defensive end. Ajeet Singh and Mervin Baloran scored 19 apiece for the 1-1 Bulldogs, who next play University of the East on Sunday.
After the game, UST coach Pido Jarencio said, “Buti nagstep up si Dylan kasi medyo non-factor nung 1st game. Nawala na yung first game jitters. Sabi ko nga, Philippine Team ka, medyo na relieve ako dahil dinala nya yung team ngayon.â€
With the victory, the Black and Gold find themselves atop the team standings at 2-0. Their next assignment will be against defending champions Ateneo de Manila on Sunday.

i won’t deny it, pero masarap nga naman ang feeling ng 2-0 ngayon. pero NU at AdU pa lang yan non-final4 teams last year.
we still have Ateneo on Sunday, and UE and FEU on God knows when.
we have to be realistic. FEU is insanely talented that they can go toe to toe with the champs. UE has a flowing offense and an insane running game. Ateneo is a monster on the boards, and on Defense.
i believe in the tigers naman eh. kaso, we have to accept din naman the limitations. no just charge on with blind faith without considering the circumstance.
siyempre umaasa pa rin naman ako na pumalag ang UST sa Ateneo on Sunday. pinag-dadasal ko lalo na hindi blow-out ang game.
sa FEU, it’s a tough call, considering na maganda ang nilalaro ng Tigers, pero it might be the Tams in the end.
The Tigers might stand a chance against UE. the just have to engage UE in shooting and fastbreak contest. if they take the offensive sets slowly, UE’s big men will wear down dylan and whoever’s playing in the 4 and 5 spots.
On La Salle, i think the Tigers can ravage them Archers. with a sloppy defense like last Saturday, the UST5 can knot a W.
UP is a pretty much given situation. they still have to find that decent defense.
my prediction, we can go to as far as 5-2 on the first round. but that’s generous. maybe 4-3 is more realistic.

one thing i noticed with the tigers in the last 2 games is that they seem to score high. i know opposing teams provide decent defense at least but it show that the current tigers can shoot this time. they might lack the height but they can surely shoot. this might be their meanest weapon this season which ‘experts’ didnt see.
another thing i noticed in this site is that thomasian are not as bastos and mayabang compared to the other bloggers.

against Adamson ang labanan sa rebound ay 54-35 ata,, basta outrebounded sila ng Adamson..pero nanalo pa din sila.. y?? kasi Ang taas ng FG% nila.. FT% at 3pt% .. so yan lang yung dapat nilang tandaan..
lastly.. UAAP team din ang Ateneo.. hindi NBA Team.. kung ano man meron sila, pwedeng tapalan ng UST un sa ibang paraan.. kung malakas sila mag rebound.. dapat malinis ang depensa ng UST..

ust is a good team like i said before i wouldnt be surprse if they end up at the final four, its going to be a tough test for ust once they face admu, that team is loaded from first five to their bench. against FEu i thnik dey have a chance even though the tams is a talented team,, y? a match wid ababou is tough, that guy is big,quick no body in the line up of feu can match him excpt noundou and cervantes, and the other thing that they can take advantage of one of the weaknesses of the tams is the “drought”. Once FEu is on fire i dont think any other team can stop that but the bad thing about them is that when they started to feel the drought expect it to be a long lasting drought.
