Ababou leads UST past NU in high-octane matchup

UNIVERSITY of Sto. Tomas, led by its experienced leader, dished out its vaunted running game for all to see.

Dylan Ababou posted a double-double with 30 points and 10 rebounds to help lead his Growling Tigers past National University, 104-89, in a high-octane showdown in UAAP Season 72 at the Araneta Coliseum last July 16.

The Philippine Developmental Team member, who was held to just 10 points in UST’s opener, exploded for 23 in the first half alone as coach Pido Jarencio’s wards zipped through the porous NU defense en route to a season-high 62 points. As if that wasn’t enough, the Sampaloc outfit allowed the Tigers to shoot an outrageous 63.2 percent field goal clip in the third quarter.

Khasim Mirza aptly supported Ababou with a double-double of his own, canning 19 points and grabbing 15 rebounds. Rookie sensation Jeric Teng also joined in the scoring fray, tallying 13 of his 14 total markers in the first quarter alone.

NU, which convincingly shut down University of the Philippines last Sunday, succumbed to the España quintet’s run-and-gun, smallball offensive and failed to put the clamps on the defensive end. Ajeet Singh and Mervin Baloran scored 19 apiece for the 1-1 Bulldogs, who next play University of the East on Sunday.

After the game, UST coach Pido Jarencio said, “Buti nagstep up si Dylan kasi medyo non-factor nung 1st game. Nawala na yung first game jitters. Sabi ko nga, Philippine Team ka, medyo na relieve ako dahil dinala nya yung team ngayon.”

With the victory, the Black and Gold find themselves atop the team standings at 2-0. Their next assignment will be against defending champions Ateneo de Manila on Sunday.

The scores:

UST 104 – Ababou 30, Mirza 19, Teng 14, Fortuna 14, Maliksi 10, Green 7, Mariano 4, Afuang 4, Cam 2, Ungria 0, Rushdy 0, Felix 0, Camus 0, Bautista 0, Aytona 0.

NU 89 – Singh 19, Baloran 19, Hermosisima 15, Terso 10, Manito 8, Malanday 7, Ponferrada 6, Batac 3, Luy 2, Roy 0, Magat 0, Fabula 0, Cabaluna 0.

Quarter scores: 32-24, 62-49, 88-68, 104-89.

Again, it’s ADMU’s defense against UST’s high scoring game.

    Lessee on Sunday.

Last time, UST barely made ANY inside baskets against Ateneo, and to think Jervy was still there. They kept shooting from the perimeter, and history shows that teams that try to win over Ateneo from the perimeter or from the outside will surely fail.

    good luck…

Camus? Dapat medyo walanghiya para ratbuhin si Rabeh, Otherwise, that’s it na naman.

More hope for UST nung natalo ng UE ang la Salle. They will worry about the title when they make it to the FF; Ang swere ng UST sa opening draw: AdU at NU agad. Tapos UP Fighting Morons.

    @dfred
Kaya nga sabi ko swerte ng UST precisely because na-draw nila mahihina. Hindi sila nagmamalaki. Naghahanap sila ng pag-asa. Easy lang.

Sorry, wrong mistake. Adamson pala nakatalo sa UP Morons, hindi UST.

UST will pay for bad recruitment and development, and depending on Jervy too much. I mean why develop Mirza like a shooting guard?

Luckily you guys will have that 6′7 player that you “smuggled” from EAC, he’s serving residency right now, better watch out for that.

Sana nga di mag-ingat at mag-relax
    ang Ateneo.Makakatikim sila ng kagat
    ng Growling Tigers.Biglang angat
ang pag-asa ng USTe.Lalo naman lalabo
    ang tsansa ng LASAL.
Yan talaga ang di nila sadya pero
    nasa pinaka ilalim ng magandang
isipan ng Ateneo sa laban natin bukas.
Siempre natural lang yan dahil tunay na
    bitter foes nila ang Lasal.
Kaya sana nga babay na.. Lasal!Hahaha!
USTe,USTe Go go go go USTe.Hehe!

huwag mo sana itulad ung dlsu sa nangyari last year sa ust, complete line-up cla with jervy and japs pero hnd pa rin nakapasok. Unlike dlsu umabot pa finals, this year ganyan din mangyyari sa ust. kaya naman ngchampion ust noong 2006 kasi wala dun ang dlsu
