Bulldogs take fight out of sluggish UP

LAST YEAR’s bottom team just sent quite a message to the entire UAAP.

National University banked on a solid second half of basketball to upend the University of the Philippines, 74-64, in Season 72 at the Araneta Coliseum last July 12.

The Bulldogs unleashed a 17-0 run to start the third period and led by as much as 26 points at the 6:16 mark, 70-44 via a short jumper by rookie LJ Malanday. That onslaught was led by yet another rookie, Kokoy Hermosisima. The freshman from Holy Cross Davao hit three triples after being held scoreless in the first half.

The Fighting Maroons, who actually led after the first 10 minutes of action, attempted to launch a fourth quarter comeback, albeit to no avail. Rookies Alvin Padilla and Carlo Gomez helped UP cut the lead to as low as 12 but came up short. A telling stat was the Diliman quintet’s miserable 37 turnovers.

Hermosisima led the Bulldogs with 12 points and six rebounds, while getting ample scoring support from three other Bulldogs who scored in double-figures. One of those Bulldogs was Malanday, who left a lot of supporters in awe thanks to his athletic ability. He posted 10 points, seven of them coming in the second quarter. Padilla and Gomez led the Maroons with 11 markers apiece.

During the postgame interview, NU coach Manny Dandan, said, “We wanted to win today, kasi during the off-season and pre-season, lagi kaming tambak sa UP. They were saying medyo bata pa ang mga players ko pero yung mga theories namin, nag-work. The players and the coaching staff did a tremendous job, the sleepless nights sa pagview ng tapes. This win is dedicated to the whole National University and of course Mr. Hans Sy.”

The scores:

NU 74 – Hermosisima 12, Singh 10, Ponferrada 10, Malanday 10, Luy 9, Batac 9, Baloran 9, Terso 4, Manito 1, Roy 0, Magat 0, Fabula 0, Cabaluna 0.

UP 64 – Padilla 11, Gomez 11, Ma. Reyes 9, Lopez 9, Co 9, Sison 4, Maniego 4, Hipolito 3, Mi. Reyes 2, Juruena 2, Gingerich 0, Gamboa 0, Astorga 0.

Quarter scores: 10-18, 36-29, 53-44, 74-64.

I was able to watch this game live at the Araneta Coliseum yesterday and it was really a surprise that the NU Bulldogs defeated the UP Fighting Maroons in such fashion.

Manny Dandan was able to checkmate Aboy Castro given the latter’s fascination with zone defense even if the Maroons were sluggish and less agile compared to swift and very athletic Bulldogs. UP’s zone defense opened up NU’s rookie shooters Hermosisima and Singh. I am thinking that it is utterly stupid (sorry for the term) for Aboy Castro to keep on using the zone when he can already see NU’s perimeter shots keeps on sinking in.

Manny Dandan was also able to force UP to commit repeated turnovers through intense defense and check Maroon veterans Martin Reyes and Co. Another thing to note about NU was the fact that they were able to contain Magi Sison, Mark Juruena and other UP bigs despite the Bulldogs having the size disadvantage (in fact, Jewel Ponferrada was able to have a field day at the expense of Magi Sison and other UP bigs).

What NU did to UP yesterday was simply as clear statement that although they lost veterans Edwin Asoro, Jonathan Jahnke, Jonathan Fernandez and Raymond Aguilar, the Bulldogs are no push-overs and could pull up surprises as the season progresses.

In fairness to UP, however, Carlo Gomez and Alvin Padilla showed flickers of hope for the squad from Diliman. Gomez, despite being an undersized 4, was brave enough to challenge Ponferrada and other NU bigs while Padilla hustled really well. In the absence of UP “go-to guys” Martin Reyes and Woody Co, Carlo Gomez and Alvin Padilla simply carried the load of the Maroons during the face-off with the Bulldogs yesterday.

Lastly, I want to mention one more criticism of a Maroon. Mike Gamboa, you’ve been in UP’s roster for three years now and, still, you play like a sophomore. You never improved much that I now think you should not only be relegated to permanent third stringer status for UP but you should be demoted to UP Team B altogether.

  • galing ng NU BULLDOGS next game tatambakan ulit ng NU ang UP….. GO NU BULLDOGS

Look at the summer games between UP and NU, laging tambak ang NU. Kaya kala ko kayangkaya ng maroons ang bulldogs. Siguro the maroons really miss the steady play of braganza. 37 turnovers ba naman.

I was able to watch this game live yesterday at the Araneta Coliseum. As usual, I was one of the ever-cheering crowd for the Fighting Maroons. I was really shocked about what happened yesterday, but that game was now history.. There’s still more games to follow. I still believe in our TEAM – UP FIGHTING MAROONS..

    UP FIGHT!!!!

dont just blame the players for UP’s lousy game. Check the coaching job too. did they come up with a competitive team? developmental ba approach nila with the players from team B to team A. Madami daw inapi na players sa team B.
