AFTER a disappointing 2008 campaign, University of Sto. Tomas ushered in UAAP Season 72 on a high with a 76-75 squeaker over Adamson University on opening day at the Araneta Coliseum last July 11.
The Growling Tigers, who led most of the way, fended off a late Falcon onslaught thanks to a combination of breaks and free throws. Swingman Allen Maliksi’s split charities gave UST a 76-73 advantage with 14.1 ticks left. In the ensuing play, Adamson forward Jan Colina grabbed an offensive board and scored on an undergoal stab to trim the lead to one, 76-75. Falcon playmaker Lester Alvarez then fouled Khasim Mirza with 2.3 seconds left, sending him to the charity stripe. Mirza failed to convert both free throws, but coach Leo Austria’s wards were left with no choice but to throw up a prayer from halfcourt since they did not have any timeouts left to spare.
Mirza, though, was clearly the game’s best player after registering 23 points to lead the España outfit, with Clark Bautista and Dylan Ababou tallying 11 and 10, respectively. Adamson, meanwhile, failed to capitalize on its 20-rebound advantage over the smaller Tigers, 61-41, by botching 13 out of 31 free throw attempts.
UST head coach Pido Jarencio commended the trio of Ababou, Chris Camus and Allen Maliksi, saying, “Sila ang magdadala sa team. In the last three minutes, even if we didn’t have a safe lead just yet, I told them na wag sila mag-alangan sa pagtira. Be decisive. Basta masunod ang gameplan, pagdating sa depense, wala namang magaling na makakapagturo nyan, kaya sabi ko magusap-usap sila. Ilabas lang ang three Ps [pride, puso, palaban] [so] we can pull off a win. Even if it’s a one-point win, I’m pretty satisfied with our win today.â€
Colina led Adamson with 16 points and 16 rebounds, with point guard Jerick Cañada contributing 14 markers in a losing cause.
The scores:
UST 76 – Mirza 23, Bautista 11, Ababou 10, Maliksi 9, Camus 8, Afuang 5, Green 4, Teng 3, Fortuna 3, Ungria 0, Mariano 0, Aytona 0.
