UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS GROWLING TIGERS
2008 Record: 6-8, Fifth Place
Head Coach: Pido Jarencio (4th Year with UAAP Season 69 Championship on his rookie year)
Key Additions: Eddie Aytona, Marco Cam, former multi-awarded Letran Squires Darrel Green, Andrew Felix, Rushdy Hadi, Jerick Teng, Aljon Mariano, Aljohn Ungria.
Holdovers: Carmelo Afuang, Jeric Fortuna, Dylan Ababou, Clark Bautista, Chris Camus, Allen Maliksi, Khasim Mirza
Key Losses: Francis Allera, Jervy Cruz, Japs Cuan, Mark Canlas, Mel Gile, Carlos Fenequito, Jackson Wong, Chester Taylor.
Background: It will be a Renaissance year for Coach Pido Jarencio as he enters the season minus Jervy Cruz, a vital piece in their title run in Season 69. More than half his roster will be composed of rookies, a change, welcome or not, he has not experienced since he took over as coach of the Growling Tigers. He will have the benefit of finally putting his stamp on a team that is already an ideal destination for players demanding for a lot of playing mileage.
Key Changes: Coach Jarencio will be without a player that has dominated the slot in the middle throughout his collegiate coaching career.  He will also be surrounded with sophomore court generals that has tasted his wrath during their freshman year. Remember, he has posted a post game comment during the course of Season 71 painting Jeric Fortuna as the pont guard of the future for the Growling Tigers. The chance to prove that declaration for both ward and coach will be put to the test this season.
Outlook: 6’3 Dylan Ababou, 6’4 Khasim Mirza and 6’3 Allen Maliksi form the most veteran front court trio in the UAAP. They have the size and skill to create, single coverage and rotate with anybody in the league. They are wingmen in a power forwards body that can space the floor, run on the open court, penetrate and rebound on occasion to counter their lack of bulk in the shaded lane. Wide bodied rookie Darrel Green, talented fresh from the block, Jeric Teng and the rest of the colt pack will have to earn their minutes with the vast amounts of playing time that Coach Jarencio is willing to spill this Season 72 for these young hopefulls.
Prognosis: Coach Jarencio loves surprises. It’s been his calling card since Season 69. He loves playing the low-key and would like to maintain that status quo and it might just work this Season 72 to his advantage.
UNIVERSITY OF THE EAST RED WARRIORS
2008 Record: 9-5, Fourth Place; Final Four
Head Coach: Lawrence Chongson (First Year)
Holdovers: Toto Bandaying, Paul Zamar, Lucas Tagarda, Elmer Espiritu, Rudy Lingganay, JM Noble, Erwin Duran, Raphy Reyes, Pari Llagas, John Ray Alabanza, Paul Lee, Val Acuna
Key Losses: Marcy Arellano, Gino Etrone, Hans ThieleKey Additions:Â Garrick Ayala, Kenneth Dale Acibar, Jai Flores, Jhon Sumido
Background: Coach Chongson has some big shoes to fill as he enters the collegiate basketball limelight this Season 72. Under Coach Dindo Pumaren, the UE Red Warriors has not missed a beat, whatever the available material, Coach Pumaren had maximized what he had. With a veteran line up intact that has seen and fought many wars, Coach Chongson has the instant pieces to go deep into the Season.
Key Changes: There are no tenderfoots in this team, even without Marcy Arellano and Hans Thiele, the Red Warriors are still a capable bunch of warhorses that can do a lot of damage. Even with their lack of size, they can still manage to pull it off with their speed and quickness on both ends especially with a lot of weapons at the backcourt despite the season fatality of James Martinez who suffered an ACL injury during the FilOil preseason finals against FEU.
Outlook: With an intact line up, Coach Chongson has no excuses not to perform well this season. Coach Chongson has a hardened line up that has grown and fought together as a team. This is still an athletic and quick squad that loves the open floor game and willing to play defense.
Prognosis: At the minimum, the Red Warriors are a cinch to barge into the playoffs and might pull off some upsets along the way. They have been together a long time and they have the right stuff to win in crucial situations.

FYI lang po: UST’s Jose “Jun” Cortez already left the team a season before (graduated/finished playing years) and so did Hector Badua (last I heard was he transferred to JRU, not sure how true since I last talked to him was December 2008 pa).
Our team’s players lost then are:
graduates/finished playing years – Franciz Allera, Mark Canlas, Jervy Cruz, Japs Cuan, Mel Gile, Chester Taylor
transferred schools/left the team – Carlos Fenequito, Jackson Wong, Milan Vargas
And AC Marquez was part of the Champion team (Season 69)
Yun lang po :)
It will be a long Season 72 for the Tigers. Their only natural center and most importantly a rookie at that, stands only 6’2. Plus, the departure of their assistant coach, Beaujing Acot will only add to their miseries. His replacement, Japs Cuan will have to fill the big shoes left by Acot but he can provide comic relief in the bench as Wally in tandem with Coach Pido who will reprise his role as Allan K.
Nakakalungkot naman yan, nakatalikod n nga blurred p ung player ng ue, don’t expect that ue fans will buy that mag.
ACL injury nya last season eh. Sana di sya mahirapan ngayong season 72. Di po ako bias. Nakita ko na po talaga maglaro yan. Tsaka wala pong yabang yun, kaklase ko kasi yan nung 1st year ako. hahaha
Yes i agree, i wouldn’t have that mag in my shelve!
ayan na naman si pido, the worst coach of the uaap, ang init ng ulo at laging galit, this season magwawala yan kasi he will not even step into the final 5, adamson is a lot better than UST
Wait, wait, wait. Beaujing Acot leaving UST? Really?
The Rebound magazine is priced at P175.
At first glance, sabi ko sobra naman atang mahal!
Luckily, I saw an open Rebound mag and read it for at least 1 hour.
I can honestly say the mag is worth its price!
Ang ganda! Halos kumpleto!
Pero bakit wala si Green Mind Tony Atayde!?
Papangit ba ang Magazine?
Every coach has their eccentric moments and COach Jarencio is no exception.
sana bumalik na ang magandang laro ni Kashim Mirza. he was fantastic on his rookie year tapos biglang nawala ang laro.
Imee – thanks for reading my column…even i get confused with the many changes that Coach Pido does with his line- up. And wish the UST players good luck after their playing years are over, I’ve seen some trying out for Liga Pilipinas teams.
Jot – and yes, we hope to see Maliksi finish one whole season with the Growling Tigers. He will be a very good player.
@Mike
sir, the praises heaped on Darrell Green may be uncalled for. he had one or two awards in his one and only playing year with the squires but is not a “multi-awarded” player. he was a problem probie at Adamson. I hope he has changed in his ways and will not bring his troubles to uste. but let’s not create unnecessary expectations.
para sa mga nagsasabi na hindi bibili ng rebound mag dahil wala ang player nila…HELLO??? you can’t expect all schools to be represented on the cover!
to the three amigos: magaling! sa uulitin. kailan ang next issue? sabi kasi sa mag, 2-3 times lang per year?
Very glad that Aljon Mariano has suited up for the uste squad. this is the real talented guy. for a while we thought he was practicing with FEU and La Salle. so thankful uste is giving him the breaks in the collegiate league.
Good luck, Aljon Mariano!!!!!
Time for Warriors Lucas Tagarda, JM Noble and Raphy Reyes to really step up this year. there is a vacuum left by the injured King James Martinez. Lucas has much to show UAAP fans but has lived in the shadows of the more prominent warriors. Lucas baby, step out and step up, please!!!! show us again the rampaging Tagarda we knew!
@ jot.. malakas pa din si Allen Maliksi, he was named as MVP in the recent MBL (MetroPolitan Basketball League) for UST.. ang ktangi tnging pre-season league na sinalihan nila
@ronron
bro, who will be the tiger’s captain ball this season please?
Hi Espana Kidd,
Darrel was ok but not exceptional during their practice sessions, so far so good. Letran didnt retain his services after high school so we can make our own little assumptions. But let’s not judge his character just yet, let him prove it out on the basketball court. I believe he can be an above average player and can help the Growling Tigers. Right now, UST needs all the help it can get if they want to stay on course for another final four run.
@ Sir Mike
Am with you about giving Darrel a chance to prove himself. will pray that his troubled days are over.
Sir, tell us a little something about Jeric and Clark. do we expect better performances from the two? we hope the rookie errors are now a thing of the past. hope Tata really flies high this year? who will be the Tigers’ go-to guy sir?
Aljon made the right decision in coming to UST if playing time is his issue. La Salle and FEU are loaded with talent and he might not get the minutes. If a player is looking for extra playing time to showcase their skills, even for a year, UST should be their destination.
About Jeric and Clark (it looked like Smallville from were I’m typing), Clark is a natural combo, his shooting served him well in Coach Pido’s rotation. Jeric, with his much heralded boo boos last season, is also hitting his stride, Coach Pido has been pushing the guy in practice because of the demands in that position. We hope both are stable enough to handle the pressure when the season opens.
@ronron1281989,
salamat sa mga updates mo regarding the just concluded shakey’s vleague between ust & ssc. nasa abroad kami and working and can only find out the scores thru your updates. wish theres a live webcast for the uaap games too or somebody like you will again share this info to us thomasians far away from home.
viva santo tomas!
@ronron
MBL -Millennium Basketball League-
dito rin nagsimula sila Arwin Santos at Jay Sierra noon same with Carlo Sharma of LaSalle.
@sir mike
For the DLSU oreview…check out The Green Mind :-)
@Barubal.. yes, its true that Coach Acot is no longer part of UST Coaching Staff. Former ace PG Japs Cuan, was tapped to fill in his shoes. But as you may not know, there are other assistant coaches who have been with the Tigers for years.
@espana kidd.. it will be none other than Dylan Ababou. Assistant team captain is Khasim. Both are in their final season.
I wouldn’t expect much of a good ending for UST this season. If we are to check the line up, there’s no legit Center. But don’t count out the Espana dribblers just yet. Pretty much, they have the size advantage in the wing positions among the teams which in average is at 6″3. The Tigers will definitely do a run-and-gun type of game this time.
To watch for: Allen Maliksi is healthy and was given a go signal to play his 100% in his final year.
I really hope Jeric Teng will be as explosive as he was during his Xavier days. I hope he can be a scoring machine too as Dylan and Khasim will definitely need help in scoring.
@Doug
thanks so much for the update.
forgive my ignorance, dont know much about jeric teng. can u give a little backgrounder on the guy? did he play in the juniors league?
Espana kidd.. dude he’s a HS SuperStar fresh from Xavier School. He was an MVP in their league, Tiong Lian, averaging 30 or more points per game I believe. A son of former PBA legend, Alvin Teng.
@Doug
Great to know the facts re Jeric Teng. thanks! so sorry our attention is focused on ncaa and uaap. dont know much about tiong lian.
keep us posted. still hoping for an exciting uste salvo into this season’s clashes whether or not the kids get into the finals.
@espana kidd.. sure, will do.
@mike.. Sir, add to your UST list is AC Marquez. Yes, the once back up guard who missed playing last year made his way to the roster again suiting up for Tigers in Season 72. I heard he has improved a lot and so as Melo Afuang.
espana kidd
this year’s team captain/captain ball is Dylan Ababou.. no doubt about that..
@ronron
thanks! how is kashim mirza? last year, he did not play as well as during his rookie year and we dont understand why? will we see a much better mirza this season?
last playing year for mirza?? db he’s just in his 3rd year.. sabay silang pumasok ni cawalaing of feu sa league db
according to doug, its last playing year for both dylan and kashim.
we hope Mirza will be as brillant this year like in his rookie year. we are from antipolo where Mirza comes from. we are cheering for him. we remember that he has a fantastic three point shot and great penetration skills but they disappeared last season.
i hope so.. sana magkasabay sabay ang games nina Bautista,Ababou,Mirza,Maliksi,Green and Teng..
we’ll UST doesn’t have this legitimate Center becuase they are not that tall.. but if you will look on FEU in season 69, there is no tall guy there too, i think it’s only baracael, half of the team are compose of rookies too, but still they’ve almost made it to the f4.. Now it’s UST’s turn to prove that they can do what FEU did in that year. PROVE the critics that they are wrong
btw, on saturday, GAME KNB will feature the 8 teams of UAAP…
ADMU,AdU,NU & UST made it to the 2nd round
then UST and AdU made it the head-to-head round.. eventually Adamson won… the telecast will be on saturday…
players for the UST in the said gameshow.. dylan,khasim and teng
dylan started on season 68 for the league.. definitely it is his 5th year this season..
but mirza is just a rookie on season 70.. what i can remmber is that the rookie of the year is a close call between mirza and cawaling that time.. so he’s last playing year should be at season 74..
he’s not matanda naman for the age limit…
so what’s the reason?
btw,

Mirza already played ball for WCC before transferring to UST…
@Doug: I see. I was thinking that Beaujing Acot leaving UST was nothing but a joke until your confirmation. Honestly, I just could not believe that UST lets go of Acot, the architect of the Tigers’ championship run in 2006. It is not that I am belittling Pido Jarencio’s capacity to coach UST but I think Acot is a better coach than him.
@sir mike
is the rebound magazine available in davao?
@RonRon, as Arj already mentioned, Khasim was a transferee from WCC (not sure though which collegiate league WCC is part of) and based from UAAP rule book, only five(5) years shall be the actual playing years in the UAAP. These shall include playing years in the NCAA, CUSAA, SCUAA, NCRAA and other collegiate leagues. He took two years playing for WCC if I’m not mistaken. Thus, only 3 seasons left for Khasim. He started in season 70 then this should be his final year.
@Barubal, I thought of that too. There must be a deep reason why Coach Acot had to leave. Let’s just move on and well, hope for the best for UST. Let’s see how Pido take charge without his ‘sidekick’ Acot. I thought these two get along.. geez!!
oo nga pala naglaro n nga pala xa 4 wcc…
sayang..
where did these players transfer?
Carlos Fenequito, Jackson Wong, Milan Vargas
It’s like this…Acot may be the brains but Pido provides the heart…i mean, the system is in place it’s just a matter of execution and Pido surely can make his wards as motivated as possible.
