COLLEGE of St. Benilde came away with a pulsating 74-70 triumph over Mapua Institute of Technology in the NCAA Season 85’s final game of the week at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan City last July 3.

Despite trailing by as many as eight points, the Blazers marched to their second win in as many games through the efforts of fifth year off-guard Jeff Morial, who led his squad with 18 points. Coach Richard del Rosario’s wards never gave up as they consistently put pressure on the Cardinals on the defensive end with their patented half-court, man-to-man press and 3-2 zone set-up.

Blazers wingmen Chuck Dalanon and Anjelo Montecastro followed up on their solid first game performances against Angeles University Foundation with 12 and 10 markers, respectively. As a result, the Taft outfit is now atop the team standings with Jose Rizal University, San Sebastian College-Recoletos and Arellano University with a 2-0, win-loss mark.

Incidentally, CSB also started last season with a 2-0 mark, but won just two out of their remaining 12 games to slump to a 4-10 record at season’s end.

Mapua, which lost its opening day showdown with San Beda by 33 huge points, managed to dictate the tempo for much of the game, but failed to contain St. Benilde’s inside excursions. Allan Mangahas, who was held to just two points in the first quarter, and Mark Acosta led the Cards with 12 points apiece. Rookie coach Chito Victolero’s quintet is mired at the cellar with an 0-2 mark, tied with Letran and Perpetual Help.

St. Benilde’s starting five outscored Mapua’s opening quintet, 52-45.

The scores:

St. Benilde 74 – Morial 18, Dalanon 12, Montecastro 10, Johnston 8, Mañalac 7, Abolucion 6, Manlapaz 5, Tan 4, de la Paz 4, Wong 0, Umlas 0, de Guzman 0.

Mapua 70 – Mangahas 12, Acosta 12, Cornejo 10, Sarangay 9, Guillermo 8, Soriano 6, Pascual 5, Ranises 3, Maniego 2, Espinosa 2, Cinco 1.

    social climbers? hahaha. your argument is cheap. it reflects your your intellect… it may also reflect your school.

    Animo San Beda!
    Congrats Blazers.

  • blsz says:

    @sunflower

    what argument?
    everybody knows about san beda’s social climbing 101.

    btw, such a weak and washed-up comeback turning blind eye from somethng that is evident. (are you really being arrogant, might as well try again -epic fail)

  • GSXR1000 says:

    it’ common knowledge to everyone that CSB students are wannabee “LASALSALISTAS” benilde students want to feel that they belong. that is why they have the”ONE LA SALLE” crap. this is designed to pacify the 2nd class students of CSB. True enough there’s lot’s of weird course in CSB. even our very own state university(UP) does not offer this stupid programs. i think every sem they offer a new course just to rake cash.

  • ablaze says:

    great win blazers

  • sunflower says:

    @blsz

    Social climber? Did bedans hurt your ego? id like to apologize on their behalf. they can be very childish and arrogant at times but trust me they are everything but SC’s. so relax. go watch transformers.

    “turning blind eye from somethng that is evident.”
    -by that i guess you have an evidence to show, otherwise you just made yourself incredibly stupid by saying so.

    which school u from by the way? it’s a shame they have produced a person like you anyhow.

    Congrats again St. Benilde! (is this guy one of urs?)
    Animo San Beda!

  • blsz says:

    @sunflower
    huh? evident means it’s obvious.
    you definitely just made yourself incredibly stupid.

    anyway, you want proof, google words like “beda social climber” and learn what everyone’s been talking about.

    oh, you don’t have to search, just read your own post,
    speaking third person then praising your own.
    without a doubt, social climbing at its best.
    that a hidden bedan skill??

  • garci says:

    Congrats Blazers!

    we still believe!

    Animo!

  • garci says:

    I somewhat agree with the san beda comment.. common guys! with your cheer and your stance, it’s a combination of la salle and ateneo.. Oooooowowowoooh…
    one big fight! Can’t you make your own cheers? I understand the ‘one big fight’ was used in one of Ateneo’s crucial games before and institutionalized (correct me if im wrong). The Animo La Salle is part of the tradition…

    I hope Arellano or JRU would make it on top this season. Also hoping that CSB will outdo itself. San Beda is just a hype now!

  • martian says:

    animo benilde!!! great win! keep it up blazers!

    Hail St. Benilde!!!

  • sunflower says:

    @blsz

    hay! there you go. now everybody knows how stupid you really are. you can’t back your accusations with any sturdy proof. google? oh sh*t! if you cant prove it then STFU.

    San Beda RL’s are 3-time champs. do i need to prove that?

    BTW, which school you from snotty? you dont happen to be from a school in payatas are you?

    ***People please don’t engage with this as*hole.

    Congrats to the CSB community.
    Animo San Beda!

  • Raters says:

    whoah!!! whats san beda doing on a csb thread???
    hmm, i kinda agree with the “social climber” issue
    who needs proof for something that is so obvious anyway?

    you hafta agree.it is funny!! :)

  • cupid says:

    GSXR1000

  • martian says:

    @cupid

    hayaan mo na ung mga katulad nila pare. kahit anung explain mo dyan, di ka talaga maiintindihan nyan. anyways kami mga benildean, alam namen anu ang totoo. proud kami sa school namen kahit pa sabihin nila na second class o wannabees kami; hindi naman kasi totoo. wag mo na patulan yang mga ganyan, ang tawag kasi dyan, crab mentality.

    Animo Benilde!

  • sunflower says:

    @Raters

    That makes the 2 of you bitter and stupid. Are you blsz’s new boyfriend?

    @cindy

    hush sweetheart. you have a very poor sense of humor. can i just have your number instead?

    @garci

    You could do some researches first before you make stupid comments. It seems to me you are sick of seeing San Beda in the sports column of your newspaper. I must admit am sick of that as well. I am so sick of attending free-flowing victory parties during Aug/Sept. Imagine doing that for 3 straight years.

    Lastly all 4 of you are bitter stereotypers. I have not said anything bad to anyone’s school, for the record and it will not hurt to return the favor to others. Just a suggestion.

    ANIMO SAN BEDA!

  • @sunflower

    Animo brother!!!!!! always outnumberd, but never outgunned…..always outnumerd, but never outfought!

  • cupid says:

    yeah gusto ko lang naman linawin dun sa tao na hindi kayo wannabees, and yup wag na pansinin ang mga papansin dahil sila’y lilipas din.

  • A proud benildean/blazers/CSB students says:

    wanna be lasalista? yes frankly speaking some csb are relly wanna be, shame on them. some!!! csb is uniquely csb and kung makakaharap kayo ng real benildians,, were totally different compared to lasalle and in my opinion we are a better school than lassale and any other schools,…

  • cupid says:

    UNIVERSITY OF MANILA (UM) HAWKS of coach Loreto Tolentino, which produce good (and tough) players. They have a good program and manage to contend every year for the title despite leaning on their junior mainstays only as their farm for their seniors team.

    Three-time National Inter-Collegiate champion and 5 time NAASCU champion

    notable players and alumni:

    Nelson Asaytono – one of the most lethal scorers philippine basketball has seen.
    Biboy Simon – the assasin, MBA scoring record 52 pts
    Leo Avenido -recruited by nearby FEU, went on to be UAAP scoring champ
    Joel Dualan – former Shell mainstay
    Eugene Tan – either you hate him or you love him, but stamped class in his successful PBL career. now part of rp team to SEA games
    Jovy Sese -former PBA player
    Mark Saquilayan -former PBL player
    Ferdie Go – former PBA player
    Ronnie Mattias -Pharex main man. figured in the middle of UE-adamson tug of war, slowly getting mainstream attention.
    Ryan Regalado -one of those unheard of barangay stars. very underrated. definitely PBL material, takes and makes 28 footers with ease. had a brief but productive stint in the NBC.
    Richard Litonjua – rising star
    Kelvin Gregorio- UE starter, Mail and More PBL
    Frank Bonus -rising star. STI may get all the love recently, but this guy consistently torched them during their NAASCU collitions.
    Paul Santiago – rising star, now playing for Lyceum-Manila
    Allen Maliksi – now mainstay of UST Tigers. tall and lanky for a swingman but athletic and very physical player.
    Onofre Napiza – Hawks next Ronnie Matias

    high school star – Zandro Limpot, Paul Alvarez, Eugene Quilban and Banjo Calpito

  • garci says:

    I don’t really know about teams but there have been a lot of players who have been outstanding in smaller leagues and teams outside of Metro Manila.

    Leomer Losentes of St Francis of Assissi (Laguna) comes immediately to mind. In the Nike tournament last summer he was head and shoulders above the rest of his team and playing toe to toe with the UAAP and NCAA guards.

    Jeff Lapitan was another former SFACS Laguna player who is now looking to play for the EAC Generals. Unfortunately the 6-foot-5 center-forward’s most memorable moment in the offseason tournaments was his right straight to the back of Martin Quimson’s head, which promptly got him tossed from that game.

    cornflower has been kicked out of SBC last 2007 due to poor academic performance and was later found out has pending warrant of arrest filed against him RTC-Manila br. 46

    This has led SBC to dismiss the “accused” for the protection of it’s students and faculty.
