Sizzling Aquino tows San Sebastian past San Beda

JIMBO Aquino is proving to be the primetime performer that San Sebastian College-Recoletos needs this season.
Aquino, held scoreless in the first quarter, erupted for a game-high 26 points, including six triples, to lift the Stags past defending, three-time NCAA champions San Beda College, 83-77, at the resumption of the league’s 85th Season at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan City last July 1.
The Red Lions took the lead early on with Bam Gamalinda and Jake Pascual controlling the inside and disrupting the San Sebastian defense. In fact, the Stags only regained the lead late in the fourth quarter after Aquino buried three consecutive bombs from downtown and exposing the reigning champions’ flaws, particularly in their 3-2 zone defense.
Arguably the key to the game was the Recto unit’s ability to crash the offensive glass. Despite outrebounding San Beda by only two in the offensive rebounding category, 21-19, the Stags scored 19 second chance points, compared to the eight tallied by their opponents from Mendiola.
While Aquino towed San Sebastian to regain the lead, off-guard Jonathan Semira and big man Gilbert Bulawan helped their squad sustain the momentum until the endgame. Former RP Youth Team member and rookie slotman Ian Sangalang scored 16 points and grabbed 10 boards, while Bulawan and Semira contributed 10 and eight markers, respectively, to push San Sebastian atop the team standings with two wins out of two games.
San Beda, meanwhile, had a solid game from Gamalinda, who carried the load with 15 points and three rebounds, while Pascual registered a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Coach Frankie Lim’s wards dropped to 1-1 in the team standings after slaughtering Mapua last Saturday.

let’s put it this way the best teams in the world like the lakers and the celtics are those teams who sees regular season games as not such a big deal. I mean, you can not celebrate a win against the defending champions of the ncaa and treat it as if you already won the championship.Always remember that San Beda lost to Letran two years ago in the first round and then continue the season and won the championship, last year they were defeated by JRU in the first round but they redeemed themselves by beating the Bombers in the finals. Well, I have to congratulate the stags for putting up quite a fight yesterday but let us see when your team stumbles in the middle of the season let’s see what your team is really made of. Always remember ” do not underestimate the heart of a champion.” that is according to Rudy T. and I still believe that the lions can still pull it off.

Congratulations to San Sebastian for winning the game, San Beda had a good game but their counterpart had better. I think things that we can improve on offense is for our shooter to sink in their outside shots, this will loosen up their opponents defense in the middle, we all know how talented Pascual and Daniel is inside the paint. On defense, we should have a back-up defender on the low block, we can not let Daniel defend the paint alone. I noticed that our opponents made their adjustments in controlling the paint by utilizing at least two offensive players in a single play, one penetrating the inside the other making a cut on the low block waiting for the drop pass from the other guy. There has been no help defense so far on our side is concern as Daniel would try to block the penetrating guy the low block guy will free-up and most likely will make the easy two. As for their shooters, our defense should adjust quickly since the 2-3 zone is no longer effective because Mambo Jimbo had been shooting the lights out from behind the 3point arc. Well these are just my observation, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, the bright thing is the red cubs have won in a convincing fashion over the staglets, which is currently having their 5th consecutive championship campaign.

@beda padin ako. What school mo? – Get real and wake up. This is not 2007 or 2008 with Ekwe around. Ekwe is gone. The Stags have mangled you in the past three of four encounters. When the Stags lost, the coach and several players weren’t around. No doubt the Lions are still contenders, for only for the FF. The Finals will be between the Stags and JRU. That is for real and that is a future fact. The pre-season has shown the Stags are back, and they are back big time!

Congratulations to SSC-R for the nice game against San Beda! They were the better team yesterday. Heck! Sa pre-season pa lang, I had a feeling the Baste should be considered as the favorites this year and the Red Lions are the underdogs.
This is not to say that San Beda can not retain their title. I’m just saying this time, it will be difficult. Malakas ang Baste. Malakas din ang JRU.
Then again, this we are just at the early stages of the first round. It’s still a question of which team would peak at the right time.

I know magkaibigang close sila Borgie Hermida and Chico Tirona ng Red Lions. Kaya lang parang may silent rivalry and competition ang dalawa. this is not good for the team. Hindi malinaw kung sino ang leader ng Red Lions, unlike in the past, it was clear na si Aljamal and then si Pong Escobal ang leader. Today, hindi malinaw. Pag hindi clear, nag aagawan ng eksena. Weak ang leadership ni team captain Bambam Gamalinda. Individually, great players ang Red Lions. But as a team today, kailangan ng leadership.
In contrast mukhang nawala na ang awayan sa loob ng Stags team. Dati, parang galit kay Pamboy Raymundo teammates nya. Puro sisihan pag may error. pero ngayon, mukhang nag jell nang husto. parang nabawasan na ang internal rivalry. yun yata ang strength ng Stags today. Admittedly, deeper bench ang Red Lions. Pero nga dahil mahina ang leadership, hindi magamit ang advantage. Bambam is a very good player. But he is not as effective as a leader as Aljamal and Pong Escobal.Sasapawan cia ni Borgie.

Sana magkaroon ng isang season na ALL FILIPINO UAAP and ALL FILIPINO NCAA. yung collegiate leagues are committing the same mistake as PBA. Puro Fil-ams and imports na kaya humina ang PBA. Hindi naman tayo kulang ng magagaling na players galing sa Junior Squads.
WE DON’T NEED THE EKWES to make our collegiate leagues exciting. Remember, sa bawat Ekwe and Daniels na palalaruin, may isang magaling na batang Pilipino na nawawalan ng chance na ipakita ang galing nya sa NCAA at UAAP.

Bakit c Rob Bornancin ng UP (State U pa to ha) dati e nde naman nagrereklamo mga taga UAAP dahil sa paglalaro nya? Bakit yun 2 foreign players ng Ateneo e walang ganitong issue? Dahil hindi naging ganun ang impact nila tulad ni Sam or Sudan. Move on.

the suggestion goes to all school, not just to the hosts of Ekwe and Daniels. Just want to see a purely Filipino league. we long for the days when Filipinos were the stars in our own court.
I just find this thread rather amusing. it is just the 2nd game of baste and some people here are talking as if nagchampion na. Blazers started last year with 2-0 too. I don’t want to jinx it.
Bat kaya hindi mamatay ang issue ni Sam samantalang may mga foreign players na talaga dati pa bago pumasok si Ekwe? Dahil dominante si Ekwe? Nuong pumasok si Sam ay all-star cast na San Beda. In fact nuon 2006 (correct me if im wrong) 10-12 players ng Red Lions ay naging MVP at least once nuong jr or sr years nila. Think of Sam as the cherry on top or as an insurance policy for San Beda’s quest for a championship. When Sam 1st came in, aside from his rebs and blocks, he was more of a liability. He can’t shoot. He has low basketball IQ. poor foot work. poor decision-making. what he can’t do, he compensates with athleticism. that’s why he’s intimidating and dominating.

@ tito ng players: FYI, Leadership by example has been proven during the last two games of San Beda. Kitang kita mo naman na this time, this team is NOT a one-man team. WALANG MADAMOT sa bola at walang “Star Player”. Wala kang makikitang forced shots.. ibig sabihin kung ikaw ay leader na isang swapang sa bola, hindi umiikot ang bola sa ibang players in a given time. At ano ang sinasabi mo na sasapawan ni Borgie si Gamalinda? eh-NA ACL nga ang tao! :)) Borgie is not Pong Escobal, Borgie is not Aljamal. Borgie is only Borgie. So iwanan muna natin na ang kakayanan ni Borgie ay hanggang jan nalang. Tanggapin natin, na ang credentials ni Gamalinda is far better than Borgie. What Borgie can do, Gamalinda can do BUT what Gamalinda can do, Borgie cannot do.
