Arellano shocks Letran in emphatic fashion

ARELLANO University is turning out to be an unruly guest in its debut stint in NCAA Season 85.

The Chiefs took home their second straight win after upsetting favored Colegio de San Juan de Letran, 81-73. Versatile big man Gio Ciriacruz carried the fight for the Legarda unit with 17 points and six rebounds as the Chiefs erected leads as large as 20 with three minutes left in the first half.

It was all Arellano from the get-go as its suffocating pressure defense put the clamps on Letran sniper RJ Jazul. The RP Developmental Team stalwart managed to score a measly eight points on 2-of-13 shooting from the field. Making matters worse for Louie Alas’ wards was the stellar play of Andrian Celada and Rod Apostol, who scored 14 and 12, respectively.

The Knights tried to inch closer in the fourth quarter and even brought the lead down to three, 76-73. However, Rey Guevarra missed an easy layup with 30 seconds left in the game, which led the Knights to foul and send Arellano to the charity stripe. Guevarra led the Knights with 17 points and eight boards.

A usually potent outside shooting quintet, the Muralla squad shot a dismal 6-for-34 from three-point range. In contrast, Junjie Ablan’s wards made 10-of-23 from rainbow territory, and scored 17 turnover points off Letran’s 16 errors.

Arellano now finds itself atop the league with a 2-0, win-loss slate, while Letran suffered its second consecutive loss after falling short against Jose Rizal University on opening day.

The scores:

Arellano 81 – G. Ciriacruz 17, Celada 14, Apostol 12, Miranda 11, I. Ciriacruz 9, Reducto 5, Tayontong 5, Dimla 5, Agustin 3.

Letran 73 – Guevarra 17, Belencion 15, J. Alas 8, Jazul 8, Cortes 7, del Rosario 7, Foronda 7, K. Alas 2, Taplah 2.

Quarter scores: 18-15, 47-32, 62-50, 81-73.

  • letran is not the same old letran that we used to know, obviously their weak now. comparable sa csb wannabees. anyway its time for coach alas to resign from his post as head coach of the knights. BTW i saw the pics of the jru shoplifters yesterday, wow! totoo nga. and as for coach vanguardia being a sauna addict?? ingat coach.

  • poor blazers, i’ve noticed no one seems interested in watching their games. you can hear ants whisphering to each other in a blazers game. now where’s the animo???

    It only shows that Arellano University are NCAA ready and proving their presence.

  • intramuros_frat says:

    letran is struggling very much this early, but i think they can still bounce back and find their winning ways, talagang prepared lang ang mga kalaban nila and mganda ang defense kay jazul.

    The next target is SBC. We will scalp them all so they’ll lose their manes to look like sicko baldies. Mas mahirap pa ang labanan sa NCRAA. History will be made this year – with a guest team being crowned NCAA champion. Go Chiefs!

    Letran officials should really ask what is happening to its team.

  • Knight Master says:

    The goal is to reach the FF. In the past, the Knights with a much weaker theam than what they have now, under Coach Alas, placed 4th in the regular season. But once the post-season started, all hell broke loose and they became Champions. The team is still jelling. The Knights showed true grit even with two losses, having come back from 17 and 20 point deficits to make it a go of a game. Hopefully, they won’t run out of steam at the end game, which is their current plight at the moment. Coah Louie has to correct his and fast.

    I know magkaibigang close sila Borgie Hermida and Chico Tirona ng Red Lions. Kaya lang parang may silent rivalry and competition ang dalawa. this is not good for the team. Individually, great players ang Red Lions. But as a team today, kailangan ng leadership.

  • tito ng players says:

    Ask din si Anjoe Latonio why he left Letran Knights and went to FEU. I am sure Letran officials will find out that the Kevin Malas issue has a lot to do with it. Maybe, we Letran sympathizers should talk secretly to the players and get their sentiments. Kawawa naman si RJ jazul. the guy is doing his best for the team.

    Look at the Letran Squires now! Baket masyadong naka sentro kay Kevin Malas ang kapalaran ng Letran basketball? do the squires and the knights exist para maging plaything ng dear son ni daddy coach? the Alas family is not the Letran community!

  • melo lim vs kevin alas!!! this would be intersting, and battle of the stage fathers at the side.

  • benjo says:

HINDI MASAMA MAHALIN NANG SOBRA ANG ANAK – except in basketball.

  • daisy says:

    what if lumipat si coach alas sa sbc? do you think sbc lalakas even more?

  • daisy says:

    honestly i think si coach louie magaling pero mahina players, while sbc malakas players mahina naman ang coach.

  • tito ng players says:

    @daisy

    I think the REd Lions don’t need a new coach. Coach Frankie is very good. they just need a leader among themselves. someone like Pong or Aljamal before. May tendency kasi magsapawan pag puro magagaling ang players and walang leader. Give the Lions a good leader and they will top this league again.

  • tito ng players says:

    Maybe Letran can do what Beda did in 2005. Remember? Nung first round, kulelat sila sa standing? then tinanggal nila si Coach Nash Racela and then pinasok nila si Coach Coy Banal? Biglang nagpapanalo ang Red Lions, tapos nag champ the following year.

    Sana, wake up call na for Daddy/Coach Louie ang setbacks nila sa games 1 and 2. Otherwise, wake up call na for the Letran Community.

  • Knight Master says:

    @tito ng players -You seem to have the inside lowdown on many teams in the NCAA. But I have to correct you on some items. Melegrito is no longer playing for the Knights for he has used up his eligibility because of age. He is 25 years old come sesaon 85. Latonio and Clarence Foronda left for academic reasons. Kevin Alas is the franchise player of Letran’s future champion teams. The present team is still sorting out its chemistry. If they jell, they’ll be dangerous and could go all the way to win the crown. But at this pint, that is a big if. I agree with you that foreign players take away basketball scholarships from local players. But for some teams who suffered long droughts (SBC and JRU) foreign players bring instant competitveness and championships which will not happen without them. While we Letranistas consider our team the “All Filipino” NCAA champion, I’m afraid the sickness of getting imports may have also infected CSJL. They say there’s a foreign black behemoth all set to play with Letran Calamba or the Letran Abucay (Bataan)Knights. If it’s true, I hope the guy plays only in the NCAA-South. Letran Intramuros can still win championships without foreign interlopers.

    YOU have to accept the fact na it’s not Borgie’s time anymore. Para ma-satisfy at manahimik ka na, why dont you talk to the RL and Coach Lim why they chose Bambam as the Team Captain of the team. Your comments are not doing Borgie, Tirona or Gamalinda any good. You are pushing them down!

  • Stelcaps says:

    ang lakas ng AU ah. Bakit humihina na ang tres ni Jazul?

  • ISCARIOTE says:

    @UE red chokers – No one wil ever forget 14-0 that became 0-2.

  • Blake says:

    @KNIGHT MASTER

    NCAA is a collegiate league. schools compete here – eligibility and not nationality is the basis. wala ba kayong foreign students sa college ninyo? meron i suppose. Kelangan ba sila madeprive ng pagkakataon makapaglaro dahil lang sa ganyang ideology? Contender ang San Beda without Sam Ekwe. Think of Sam as an Insurance Policy. Ang masama yun hindi eligible players na pinaglaro pa (DLSU). PLEASE Dont bash Letran by fielding some foreign students to play.

    You can keep your imaginary title “ALL FILIPINO NCAA CHAMPION” with your fellow letranistas… then hopefully move on.

    Cheers!

    Animo San Beda!

    @Knight Master – There are two imports being readied to play for CSJL. The best one will play for Letran Manila, not CSJL Calamba in the NCAA-South. The linear title of All Filipino Cahmpions will be replaced with the real one. Arriba!

    @Blake – after Etame Joe wins one for JRU this year, we’ll be next. That is Ekwe’s NCAA legacy.

  • Blake says:

    @Sword and Saga

    I dont think Joe will play this season. Only time can tell if your foreign students/players will be helpful for CSJL. As of this time, Sudan is not doing it for San Beda. Bad news for bedans.

    Animo San Beda!

  • tito ng players says:

    @Knight Master

    I apologize if my remarks were a little too harsh. I have been a knights fan since when Binky Favis was coaching. In fairness to Coach Louie, he brought back the Knights to championship standards. In fairness to Coach Louie, he made the right decision to bring back RJ Jazul after that incident when he suspended the entire Team B after the guys went out on unauthorized outing funded by the late Douglas Quijano. If he had kep RJ on the freezer, it would have been a big loss.

    Kevin is a gifted player, but is an excellent individual player, not a superb team player the way Boyet Bautista was. I hope Kevin learns to play as a team man. He never learned that when he was in the juniors. Once Kevin learns how to blend with his team, then many problems can be solved.

  • tito ng players says:

    @Knight Master

    Maybe, the idea of Kevin as a “franchise player” may not be good. It might close the school’s eyes to many promising players in Letran’s rich stable of future potential greats:

    1. Jarelan Tampus
    2. Brian So
    3. Glenn Khoubuntin

    I hope Letran does not lose Glenn the way it lost Shej Sumang to the UE warriors. that’s what I mean: when you focus on one star, you lose the universe.

    My all-time favorite Knights: Ronjay Enrile and Boyet Bautista

  • tito ng players says:

    @stelcaps

    I hope you can try to present your counter arguments without resorting to ad hominems. Anyway, if you have the feeling that I am very, very close to the players, you are right. and I am pretty close to Bambam himself. that is why i believe he should be more aggressive in exercising leadership. there can be no vacuum. and when there is a vacuum, someone else would fill the void.

    Whatever innuendo you might raise against my person does not render the argument any less valid.

  • Joe says:

    Glory To Chiefs!!!
    Go Arellano!!!

  • tito ng players says:

    @stelcaps

    As to your suggestion that I should talk to Coach Frankie about it, maybe not. He should know that there is a leadership problem. if he does not know it, then that is sooo nooot gooood.

    As to your proposal that I be “leader-leaderan”, I think not, too. we each have a role. my role is to inspire Bambam to do his utmost best. it is Bambam’s role to be the leader that we all hope he will be.

    And Bambam can surely learn a lot about leadership stuff from Borgie. I rest my case.

  • nicksy says:

    @tito ng players

    you knew a lot, in fact you knew too much that you already judge a player even if the Season is just getting started, well games like against the SSC-r mold the players, it is not how they dwell on that lost, but accept it and move forward, it will show eventually on the games, much importantly on those crucial games, we have one goal here, and that is to go 4peat, and also in the case of Borgie, come on1 the guy just had a ACL surgery half a year ago, dont force him too much, he has another year to prove himself, unlike Tirona (for what i knew) is playing his last year, this maybe a win-win scenario for them, I don’t like Borgie to force himself too much, it might jeopardy his career.

    I must admit it, medyo napahiya ka ata kay Knight Master.

  • Knight Master says:

    @tito ng players

    You have raised a good point on the idea of Kevin as a “franchise player”. Yup, such may discourage players like Tampus, So, Khobuntin from suiting up with the Knights. JR Reyes, JC Intal and PJ Walsham were Squires who failed to join the Knights, but at that time, the team was winning championships and their absence were hardly felt. They could probably have won more, but that’s speculating. Now that the Knights are rebuidling, Tampus, So and Khobuntin would be needed as replacement for Jazul and Gutilban next year and Guevarra the year after. With those three, the knights can win chamiponships without resorting to imports. By the way, Boyet, Ronjay nad RJ were original Squires.

  • tito ng players says:

    @nicksy

    no argument with you nicksy. i really hope the Lions will not dwell on the loss. like you, i do not want to force borgie ( i never said he should). but you know borgie – he loves his team so much he will do everything to make it win, even if he sacrifices his own well being. same with chico. i just hope that bambam’s passion will be the same as what borgie and chico have.

    I was at Borgie’s bedside after his first ACL operations. I am a Lions die-hard. I am not an enemy.

  • tito ng players says:

    @Knight Master

    You also have to agree with me that Terrence Romeo was a big loss. He is now with the FEU Baby Tams and is making waves at the UAAP. I do not know the inside story on Terrence. But if you are talking about gifted (ex) Squires, Terrence Romeo was on that list. Letran should stop the exodus of talented players. I really, really hope there is no politics there.
