IN A BATTLE of old rivals and new NCAA squads, Arellano University thwarted Emilio Aguinaldo College in convincing fashion, 80-62 at the resumption of Season 85 at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan City last June 29.

The two guest squads kept it tight in the opening 10 minutes as EAC wrestled the advantage from the Chiefs to lead, 16-11. Arellano then turned the tables on its rivals from past NCRAA and UCAA hoops tourneys with a 6-0 mini-run to begin the second quarter. EAC’s 2-3 zone also failed to contain coach Junjie Ablan’s cagers, who outscored the Generals by 14 in the second quarter to take a nine-point advantage to the locker room at the half.

Arellano’s Andrian Celada and Rodrigo Apostol took turns to break the game wide open, and helped anchor their squad’s patented full-court, man press to hold EAC to just two points in the first five minutes of the third period. The Chiefs erected their largest lead of the game, 61-38, late in the same quarter thanks to easy transition baskets off steals.

The Legarda unit was on cruise control from that point on, putting the clamps on EAC chief gunner Argel Mendoza, who was held to 10 points and forced to commit a whopping 12 turnovers. Celada led Arellano’s high-octane offense with 19 markers, five rebounds and three blocks, while team captain Gio Ciriacruz and brother Isaiah put in 12 and 11 points, respectively. John Santos towed the Generals of coach Nomar Isla with 12 points.

Arellano’s stingy defense led to 27 points off turnovers, as well as 25 fastbreak points.

The Scores:

Arellano 80 – Celada 19, G. Ciriacruz 12, I. Ciriacruz 11, Tayongtong 9, Apostol 8, Miranda 7, Reducto 6, Agustin 3, Rivera 2, Virtudazo 2, Dimla 0, Catapang 0.

EAC 62 – Santos 12, Mendoza 10, Cubo 10, R. Yaya 9, Jabaybay 9, del Rosario 6, L. Yaya 5, Chiong 0, Sablan 0, Ong 0.

    The games tomorrow between the Knights and the Chiefs will show whether or not multi-titled Arellano is for real. The NCAA is the real deal and the big league.

    Of the guests teams. AU appears the strongest to eneter the Final Four, and by a fluke even win the Championship.

  • RealTeam says:

    Sa 3 guest teams, seems AU has got what it takes to be a collegiate team in a prestigious collegiate league. Pnakita nla na kaya nila makipagsabayan sa mga NCAA Teams. They might be a contender for final four seat so better watch for them because they might beat CSJL Knights eventhough CSJL has the advantage over them, The Ciriacruz siblings and Andrian Celada will be liable to handle the team to beat CSJL Knights.

    Go AU Chiefs!!!

    1 JRU Heavy Bombers
    2 San Beda Red Lions
    3 San Sebastian Golden Stags
    4 Arellano University Chiefs

    Where is the site’s main news writer Josef Ramos?

    His recaps are far better than anyone else because it’s too informative, long and good.

    How about Kim Lesaca’s column? The man from State U is also good.

    Is there’s any new from Tony (green mind) and Sid (athletic soul)?

    They are great writers.

    Just asking only.

  • saintjosh says:

    sana magisip kayo bago kayo magbitaw ng mga salitang di naaangkop sa web na ito..

    di naman lahat ng tao ay tumatama..

    lahat ng schools na nasa ncaa ngaun ay dapat pasalamatan at least they do belong in the league..

    kung ayaw nio sa ncaa eh di wag na kayong manuod..

    hndi puro lait lang..

    grabe na kasi kayo eh..

    WELCOME TO ALL GUEST TEAMS..

    AND SA MGA LUMA JUST DO YOUR PART AS A MEMBER OF NCAA..

  • dyango says:

    May mga prominent schools sa NCAA like San Beda, Letran, Mapua and Benilde. Mayroon din hindi.

    In the same way that in the UAAP, may mga prominent schools like Ateneo, UP, La Salle and UST. At mayroon din hindi.

    Pero as far as basketball is concerned, it is an undeniable fact that BEFORE Ateneo and La Salle joined the UAAP, practically NO ONE watches their games. In fact, sa UST Gym lang linalaro ang championship games ng UAAP nung araw. Binuhay lang ng Ateneo at La Salle ang ligang ito. Geez! I’m sure if Ateneo and La Salle decided to join a lesser league like the NCRAA or UCAA (after they left the NCAA) instead of the UAAP, eh di sana NCRAA o UCAA ang premier league ngayon!

    In fairness to the NCAA, even without Ateneo and La Salle, hindi namatay ang ligang ito. As long as nandyan pa ang San Beda at Letran which have very loyal following even among their alumni, marami pa rin nanunuod.

    Pansin ko lang, the loudest criticism of the NCAA from among the UAAP fans seem to be coming not from students of the better schools. Ironically, kung sino pa yung mga galing sa eskwelahan na wala rin namang binatbat in the real world at karangalan lang ay yung ma-associate sa Ateneo at La Salle, sila pa yung pinaka-maingay mamintas. (Not UP kasi mga tiga-UP, generally, wlang panahon at pakialam sa UAAP. Perhaps not UST either bec sports-wise, UST is more focused on winning general championships than just basketball)

  • blake_griffin says:

    hey!!! hey!! hey!!!

    nice conversation here!

  • kdie says:

    @dyango

    right on cue sir! I totally agree with you.

  • bring back the old ncaa (50′s to 70′s)retro style

    dlsu
    admu
    trinity college
    mapua
    sbc
    letran
    and others……….

  • ONEmaroon says:

    @ dyango
    “mga tiga-UP, generally, wlang panahon at pakialam sa UAAP”
    do you know what you’re saying?
    define prominent?
    compare:
    prominent schools sa NCAA???
    San Beda, Letran, Mapua and Benilde???
    (the nerve)
    prominent schools sa UAAP
    Ateneo, UP, La Salle and UST

  • TWOmaroon says:

    @ONEmaroon

    WTF is your problem??? guess you want to start something here? ADMU and DLSU is the only schools that keep the uaap afloat. the rest are free riders only. they just ride on the popularity of this 2 schools. before ADMU and dlsu bolted out of the ncaa, uaap is nothing.

  • 3 Maroon says:

    @TWOmaroon

    Do you know anything about subject-verb agreement?
    Check your grammar, stupid.

  • dyango says:

    @ONEmaroon

    Yes of course I know what I’m saying. Assuming you’re really from UP, then you should know how few the students are from UP who bother to show up during your games. And your total student population in Diliman alone is? Do the math. You and your friends might be the exception.

    Prominent. Academics for a start. Would you say, for example that UE, FEU or NU have the same academic standards as say San Beda in law or Mapua in engineering? I don’t think so.

    Arguably, SBC and Mapua may not be a UP or an Ateneo. But are UE, FEU, and NU? Nah. And for as long as UE and FEU continue accepting kick-outs from SBC law and Mapua engineering, people would have a hard time convincing me that these universities are better than these “mere” colleges.

    Yes, the nerve.

    my problem? just you.

    UAAP means prestige!

    NCAA- are free rider only!

    think… have you compared?
