IN A BATTLE of old rivals and new NCAA squads, Arellano University thwarted Emilio Aguinaldo College in convincing fashion, 80-62 at the resumption of Season 85 at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan City last June 29.
The two guest squads kept it tight in the opening 10 minutes as EAC wrestled the advantage from the Chiefs to lead, 16-11. Arellano then turned the tables on its rivals from past NCRAA and UCAA hoops tourneys with a 6-0 mini-run to begin the second quarter. EAC’s 2-3 zone also failed to contain coach Junjie Ablan’s cagers, who outscored the Generals by 14 in the second quarter to take a nine-point advantage to the locker room at the half.
Arellano’s Andrian Celada and Rodrigo Apostol took turns to break the game wide open, and helped anchor their squad’s patented full-court, man press to hold EAC to just two points in the first five minutes of the third period. The Chiefs erected their largest lead of the game, 61-38, late in the same quarter thanks to easy transition baskets off steals.
The Legarda unit was on cruise control from that point on, putting the clamps on EAC chief gunner Argel Mendoza, who was held to 10 points and forced to commit a whopping 12 turnovers. Celada led Arellano’s high-octane offense with 19 markers, five rebounds and three blocks, while team captain Gio Ciriacruz and brother Isaiah put in 12 and 11 points, respectively. John Santos towed the Generals of coach Nomar Isla with 12 points.
Arellano’s stingy defense led to 27 points off turnovers, as well as 25 fastbreak points.
The Scores:
Arellano 80 – Celada 19, G. Ciriacruz 12, I. Ciriacruz 11, Tayongtong 9, Apostol 8, Miranda 7, Reducto 6, Agustin 3, Rivera 2, Virtudazo 2, Dimla 0, Catapang 0.
EAC 62 – Santos 12, Mendoza 10, Cubo 10, R. Yaya 9, Jabaybay 9, del Rosario 6, L. Yaya 5, Chiong 0, Sablan 0, Ong 0.
